The power of the White Board!!

I started using white boards in my home office about 7 years ago and have not looked back. I started off by purchasing a small white board from target for daily goals and now have 6 full size whiteboards in my office that get updated daily. Some hang on the walls, some are stand alones, 2 are on my desk and 2 lean on the wall.

What are some of the things I write on all these White Boards you might ask?

Daily, weekly and monthly goals and last months goals if they were hit or missed and if missed why.

The current days TO DOs that once done i will physically erase off the white board. (its a great feeling of accomplishment still to this day)

Weekly revenue projections, targets and goals with profits and losses if any. As well as set backs and payment delays.

A list of my offshore contacts names (and what I use them for) with time zone and 4 clocks above that white board with the current time of that offshore providers location. I more recently added my US based fiverr workers to this board so i can quickly find them online and reorder and remember what they did for me. I get so many services done online i forget who did what, for how much and where i found them so this board is vital, one click glance and i can get things done fast.

A giant 5 foot tall white board with my current websites holdings and stats about every website i own with current page rank, marketing efforts, who its hosted with etc...

A board with flippa sites i am bidding on or selling.

A small white board i call 'trend watch' which focuses on my selling trends, buying trends, WSO trends, current industry trends etc.. That helps me to keep my finger on the pulse of the business. I also use this board to detail tips, tricks or tactics that work or dont. For instance if i try a marketing tactic that works great or set me back I will detail it on this board.

I hope these tips helps someone who may be feeling a lack of focus, or disorganized or lost when they start the day upon sitting down at the computer. If i was to start my day by sitting down at the computer and NOT seeing these white boards I would feel pretty lost.

I also compliment these white boards with excel spreadsheets and word documents as well as iCal and its a system that I have built and refined over the past years that with a couple minutes a day and quick glances helps my small business grow and thrive.

Also if you have a good whiteboard tip or trick or want to share your system that would be great!

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don’t much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn’t matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"--so long as I get SOMEWHERE," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you’re sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

75% of one entire wall in my office is a huge ex-IT white-board. It has made me money I'm sure of it. I've had it since 2004. Really good for drawing out plans and flow charts or even jotting down phone numbers quickly.

Tip 1) How to (get a) print from a non electronic white-board:
After drawing your magnificent plan how do you print it? Easy, take a digital photo of it, print that. [wink]

    Tip 2) Names with numbers!
When you write a phone number quickly on your white-board don't forget to add who's number it is. Write names next to numbers.

    Tip 3) Stubborn marks.
When you find a stubborn line that won't rub off (red and purple are the worst) just go over it with a fresh white-board marker then rub that off. It takes the old off with the new.

    Tip 4) A Damp Rag
Give it a clean every now and then with a cloth dampened with just water.

    I love my massive over-sized white-board!

Bill, OMG I love tip #1!!! My eight-year-old will be happy you taught me this, because it has been her job to transcribe my whiteboard when I need to erase something important to make room for new ideas. Sounds so simple but it never even occurred to me. Love it! ;-)

      Very good tip, Bill.

My next thought is if you need your white board notes transcribed, 2 or 3 digital pics e-mailed to your virtual assistant.

      I'm just thinking.

I very recently got a small white board to put on the fridge for household notes. I can see now that a larger one by my desk would really help with my business.

I've been traveling and living in vacation style condos for over a year, until last month. My wife and I finally settled into a house that has a home office and I'm off the laptop onto a new dual flatscreen desktop. Nice.

But, one thing was missing for the first couple weeks and it clicked... I need a whiteboard! Made that happen and I can literally feel the momentum increasing for several projects.

Personally, The last thing I do in the evening before I leave my office is to to write 3 things I want to accomplish... Or I want the universe to accomplish... In the next 24 hours.

Not only does this keep me on track, but it is also a great manifestation tool. Ideas can expand, connections can be made, etc.

Great brainstorming tool and great keep myself focused tool!

Several years ago John Reese had a room in his home where there was "whiteboard wall covering" on all the walls. The freedom of writing on walls appealed to me! Site info on the south wall....outsourcing on the north wall...

I use basic household cleaner sprayed on a paper towel to wipe off all the smudgy stuff on my whiteboards when they look smeared.

I was going to mention that you can buy 4' by 8' sheets of white board. (The same size as drywall, paneling, etc.) Turn them sideways and secure towards the top of a wall or two.

It has been my limited experience that you almost can't have to much white board.

I have several whiteboards on the walls but my "motivational one" doesn't have any slogans on it.

It is a running total of income from all sources for the month - at the very top is last month's total so it's easy to know how I'm doing this month. On that board, nothing is estimated or assumed. The $$$ are listed only after they hit my paypal or bank account. My income has gone up every month for the eight months I've been keeping that board up to date.

Great tips, thank you for this. I do sometimes sit in front of my computer and stare and wonder what am I supposed to do now and I think the whiteboards will help. I also feel that physically wiping the task off will help mentally to keep me going. Thanks for this tip and I like your white board Infinity....WINNING!!

Great tips! I completely agree and could use a few more whiteboards in the house.

TIP: Did you know you can use dry-erase Expo markers on your MIRROR? You can easily wipe it off with a rag + little water. I like to write motivational quotes, a single actionable goal, and simple positive words e.g. "Amazing", "Stoic", "Go getter, "Champion", etc. It's great for improving your state.

    Great tips and pics!

The household cleaner is a good idea for wiping them off as an alternative to the expensive spray they sell which is really just diluted alcohol. I like the idea of the white board paint as well. I was not familiar with that or the mirror trick above until today.

I just glanced at the different name brands of all my white boards and they are...

    Quartet

    Lumina

    Board dudes and Foray

My nicest one which is in a beautiful wooden frame and is by far the best built doesnt have a brand name on it at all

Hope everyone had a relaxing labor day!

I too have a white board and I honestly can't stop using it. I put my daily routine, or brainstorm on it. Whenever I get an idea I put it right on the board. Personally I think more people should write their ideas down, cause there's been times where I'd forget a good idea.

I was quite proud of that one. You're welcome.

But there's a few trick to make it even better, try and not get the flash or room light to reflect in anything you need to see. I also pull it into Photoshop and make it square again using the skew, distort and perspective tools. Also, while you're in there bring up the contrast so it shows what you wrote. If you don't have Photoshop, take it into anything you have that can adjust pictures and add some brightness and contrast (I use 1 measure of contrast to every 2 of brightness).

TIP: A roll of clear contact paper sells for about 5 bux in Wal-Mart...makes several whiteboards...use heavy card stock...usually less than a buck for a 24 x 24 inch size...and you can cut them to custom size to fit your office area, or back of a door, and if you use light card stock, they can be rolled up and put into a round container for ez transport...

The POWER of a White Board comes from what you write on it.

    Nicholas,

I think you've discovered the secret power.

All of my coaching students are required to have at least ONE small Whiteboard behind their computer. Also a tip...a cheap whiteboard can be made from those large pieces of heavy paper and some clear drawer paper...so NO excuse for not having one.

On the GOAL board I have my students divide it in half...on the left hand side is a VISUAL image of the goal, represented by a Building with steps...

on the right is the ACTION, and/or in most cases a PERSON they are going to have go through to achieve their goals (in business, this would be the customer)...

by USING PICTURES instead of words, a person can look at the board and see exactly where they stand, what they should be doing...what the next action step is to take...

and it has proven itself to be a fantastic tool... I wouldn't coach anyone who doesn't use one.

    Thanks for your informative post.

And the cheap little whiteboards you make with heavy card stock and CONTACT PAPER you can find in Target or Office supply stores for a couple of bux a roll. Works great.

All bussines are ruled with a system of four steps

    1) Planification
    2) Organization
    3) Direccion
    4) Control

Its very clear to me that you do all of these things with whiteboards.
And if it using them keep you motivated the better.
