What do you do when you are down?

Even though you have always been a person with very optimistic views about everything, especially about your business, you will feel down once in a while.

What do you do when you feel down (de-motivated) for a particular day?

Do you force yourself to keep working to get the job done, or do you take the day off to cool down?

    Take some time off.
Maybe meditate, watch a funny movie, put on some AC/DC or Bon Jovi.
Sometimes jogging helps to clear your mind.

But I think best is to talk to a close person.

I take time off to do something I enjoy.

Or I go to sleep, knowing that when I wake up I will feel better - sort of like just starting the day over. Maybe the second time around will be better.

You may not believe this, but I never get down, because I use a preventive method that has worked for over twenty years, and that is reading Scriptures from the Bible out-loud daily that promise me something if I believe.

That depends on HOW down I feel.

I don't get those days too much anymore because I'm doing much better than I used to, but sometimes I just want "more".

Greed is a powerful emotion! (although it's not really greed since I'm doing good things with my money)

However, I usually like to either take the day off or go over my goals/past successes and realize that I have nothing to be down about.

It's usually just a case of being lazy

Its so good if my husband want to talk to me if he got problem. Usually if I feel down, I change my physiology. I learn from NLP. I adapt the body posture when I am motivated and within seconds, I am motivated again. But if I think I really need rest, I just take nap too...

If I'm not feeling motivated, I won't work.

Luckily that doesn't happen too often (because I like to give myself a healthy dose of time off anyway)... but when it does, I feel there's no need to push myself.

This is something I had to learn the hard way - used to do the whole 12-16 hour days every day, no matter what, thing - but then I realized that you're much better off listening to what your body tells you.

Not only do I find it to be more profitable, but I'm much happier for it.

Often I find that listening to podcasts on internet business or success can motivate me a lot, so that's one thing.

Sometimes I just find that if I'm getting troubled too much by the little things in life, it probably means I don't have an engaging enough external focus (goal) and need to rethink that, give myself something to get excited about again.

When I'm down, I have a couple of remedies:

My music is a sure-fire reviver. I play harp and fiddle. The harp is wonderful for expressing any hurting-in-my-soul. The fiddle reminds me of how joyful living can and should be.

Or, if I seriously need to hide in my "rabbit-hole" and pull the entrance in after me... I go outdoors. If summer, I pull weeds. Yep, I totally love pulling weeds - what better way to get to know local plants and their growth habits, needs, root structures, etc.? If winter, I go to the shore and watch birds. We even have the magnificent Bald Eagle here in Southern Maryland!

Sometimes it helps to just retreat into a favorite movie.

Hope this helps give someone else a few ideas!

It's important to surround yourself with great people. Being an entrepreneur can be so isolating.

Finding like-minded people to be with is a great way to come up out of those down feelings.

I have networks online that I hang out in, and I have great friends and family off line. So when I feel down, a lot of times, I'll turn to them for support.

It depends. If I'm unsatisfied with expectations, I work harder. If I'm just not feeling up to it today I do one of two things:

        1) Go to the gym
        2) Take a break

That's the beauty of owning your own business. It allows you to take some time off and still earn money.

Ok. Is it just me, or is igorkheifets a spittin' image of Yanik Silver?

My post is related so stay with me..

When I'm getting down, and the negitive thoughts start popping up, I do a number of things to help get me back on track. I'm positive that at least one of these things will get motivated again..or just make you laugh:

      • Look in the mirror, look yourself in the eye and say, "damn you're beautiful!"
(if that doesn't change your outlook on things, then I don't know what will)

      • Read/listen to some sales letters/recordings from highly motivated people
(Yanik Silver, for example. The guy is nuts, and a positive influence. Others include Zig Ziglar, Anthony Robbins, Steven R. Covey, and Jeff Dunham.

That last guy is funny, and he's a great marketer too. But his two buddies, Walter and Peanut will bust your gut.)

      • Meditate with audio recordings.
(I'm talking about the ones that you shouldn't listen to while driving)

Just a quick comparison because I gotta see for myself...

      Yanik Silver:

I've tried a lot of things through the years and I've found out that this is not according to taste but to a certain moods.

        1. disappear for a day. More like playing hookie and have a walk in the mall, not necessarily doing any shopping, just sitting around watching people, having coffee, or ice cream (one pint please).
        2. watch DVDs. preferably action movies or old classics.
        3. go to a pizzeria, and order lasagna with a slice of pepperoni pizza.

There's this one assurance that this too shall pass. I've had a mild depression before, conquered it without drugs, but it was a struggle. The household support pulled me through. That helps a lot.

    What Was Nigel Really Worth?
    Hi Wellymulia,
I know the below is quite long, but…
As the saying goes…“DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY”

I want to tell you about Nigel's dramatic story and then explain how it applies to many people in their quest for answers to their financial worries or just feeling down in the dumps!

Nigel had recently gone through a divorce after 20 years of marriage. He had been feeling pretty low so in an attempt to pick himself up out of the doldrums he had made a decision to do something positive and exciting. He had gone with a group of friends to New Zealand on an adventure holiday.

Including Nigel, there were 17 friends who had flown to New Zealand and who were now boarding a charter flight to a wilderness destination on an offshore island where they would be trekking inland and then white water rafting back to the coast. They were looking forward to some serious fun and adventure and as the aircraft accelerated along the runway Nigel made a conscious decision to put the pain and hurt of the past months behind him and to have a really great time.

The aircraft took off without a hitch and as the twin engines droned in the background Nigel thought about his life and how he had never really amounted to much even though he was a good person with lots of friends. He had married at age 25 and now at age 45 was trying to understand why his wife had just up and left him for a bloke who didn't treat her anywhere near as well as he had done. It just didn't make sense at all.

Sure, they had struggled with money forever but that was just normal as far as Nigel could see. He had tried a few business ideas but none had really worked out that well. He always ended up working long hours and even though he made a point of charging below the standard rate to try to attract more business he invariably would become frustrated by the long hours and a lack of real return on his time. He always went the extra mile for his customers to keep them happy and coming back for more but in the end he worked out that he might as well just go and work for a boss so that is what he had done.

Working for a boss meant less time at work and as far as Nigel could see that should have made things better around the home. More time with his wife and the kids should have helped but it had made no difference and things deteriorated further. Now it was all over. Nigel was going to have to just move on.

Suddenly a loud bang came from the starboard engine and it began shaking seriously. Within seconds smoke began billowing out from beneath the cowling and soon after that flames appeared and grew in intensity as they streamed out behind the failing engine. This was serious Nigel thought!!!!

It soon became apparent to everyone on board that this was not going to be the joy-flight they had anticipated! The pilot's voice announcing that there was going to be a watery landing came as no surprise to everyone on board after they noticed the wing itself had begun to melt from the heat of the engine fire. Worry turned to fear and then panic as the ocean loomed nearer and nearer.
What was to become of them Nigel thought? Would they die on impact? Would they be trapped inside the sinking fuselage, drowning as it sank to the bottom of the ocean? What a way to go! Nobody had expected anything like this when they took off that morning. Nigel found it hard to describe his feelings as he and his friends unwillingly anticipated their fate.

While lady luck had chosen to frown upon their day only minutes earlier she now appeared to smile for a moment. With an amazing piece of brilliance, the pilot managed to flare-out and then stall the aircraft just before impact, allowing it to belly flop into the water with an almighty splash only to re-surface moments later like a cork thrown into a bucket of water. No-one was killed! In fact, most of those on board suffered no more than a few cuts and bruises. Nothing serious had happened... yet! But what about the fire? What about sinking ?

More good news! The fire was extinguished by the the water and for a moment there was a sense of relief and calm that the ordeal was over. Looking around, the group began to express their relief to each other, but lady luck was not smiling for long. The aircraft had sustained serious structural damage as it hit the surface of the ocean and they were taking water fast. It was clear that they were going down ... again! Getting out of the sinking aircraft now became an urgent priority.
What followed was the most unimaginable series of events you would ever read about.

With only minutes until the aircraft would sink, all 17 on board rushed to locate the life raft and get it inflated as quickly as possible. Frantically they worked together at unpacking the raft and getting it ready to deploy but then gradually, one by one, a sense of shock came over the group as they began to realise that only 16 people could possibly fit into the life-raft!

Someone would have to take their chances in the water. What was tragic about this was the fact that sharks had already started to circle the sinking aircraft almost as if they were anticipating that lunch was about to be served!

Knowing that someone was almost sure to be taken by sharks, the group had some collective soul searching to do. How could they possibly make the decision of who would miss out on a place in the life raft?

It was quickly suggested that everyone should take turns at telling why they should be granted a place in the life raft and then the group would vote on who had been least convincing in presenting their case for survival. What else could they do? They would have drawn straws but nobody had any. Time was running out!

Nigel was thinking hard about what he would say when it was his turn to speak. It was as if his life was flashing before him. He thought about the good times he had had as a child growing up. The times he had spent with family and friends. How he had gone camping as a boy scout; how he had won every medal offered by the scouting movement for bushmanship and how much fun that had been. He thought of his children and wondered what they would feel if he never made it home. He thought about his ex-wife and wondered if she would even shed a tear if he died.

Nigel's thoughts turned to how he had been brought up to always be polite; to always let others go first. Never to be pushy or greedy. Never to think that he was better than others. He was a modest and humble person who loved life. As he listened to the rushed words of his friends, Nigel was overwhelmed by a feeling that he just could not put himself before his friends and as his turn to speak arrived he made a decision. He could not live with himself for the rest of his life knowing that he had put himself ahead of one of his friends who had then died as a consequence.

He was struggling to come to terms with his wife leaving him anyway so what the heck! Standing quickly to an upright position, Nigel took a step forward, said goodbye and threw himself out of the sinking plane and into the shark infested water. He was quickly devoured in a feeding frenzy that shocked and sickened his friends to their very core. He died a painful but swift death right there in front of his mates who watched his gallant actions unfold in utter disbelief as they helplessly viewed their friend's ghastly self-sacrifice.

The remaining 16 were absolutely stunned and the significance of what they had just witnessed was overwhelming as they climbed into the life raft and pushed away from the sinking fuselage. They made it clear just in time to avoid being sucked under by the undertow of the sinking wreck and before too long found themselves bobbing around in the ocean with nothing in sight but the distant horizon in all directions for as far as they could see.

They were stunned at the events of the day and wondered what would happen next! Each one of them paid tribute to their friend Nigel, taking turns at recalling the events of a time they had spent with him in the past. He was a faithful friend and now he had made the supreme sacrifice for each one of them.

Hours passed and day turned to night. Talk began to turn to whether they would ever be rescued or make it to land safely or not. Jokes about 'Gilligan's Island' became common as they tried hard to hide their sorrow and their fear. Who would be the professor? Which one of them was most like Thurston Howell? Who in the group was Gilligan? Would they spend days or weeks lost at sea or would they float to a deserted island? Was this to become their own personal version of that famous sitcom's three hour cruise?

Thoughts turned to the fact that no-one had anything more than the clothes they were wearing. All their gear had gone down with the plane. Everything had happened so quickly they were lucky to have come away with their lives but now they were feeling hungry and thirsty. What would they do? How long could they survive if there was no rescue?

Morning seemed to take forever to arrive and to their amazement as daylight broke they saw they were drifting towards a solitary small island. By mid afternoon they were on the beach and counting their lucky stars that they would not spend another day drifting at sea. In the distance a search plane was seen and as they heard it getting louder and louder they frantically made vain attempts at lighting a fire on the beach to attract attention but as quickly as it had appeared the aircraft disappeared and they realised that with no matches and no firelighters they had no chance of ever lighting a fire.

What would they do? Not one of them had any idea how they could take charge of their predicament. If they put out to sea in the life raft, who knows where they might end up; South America? South Pole? They realised they were in serious trouble!

Over the next two weeks countless aircraft and ships passed by but not one of them noticed the 16 desperate people dancing frantically on the beach trying to attract attention. Time after time they got their hopes up only to have them shattered again as they were passed by.

Although there was a heavy dew each morning there did not appear to be any available running water and with no canned food or take-away shops, they had made desperate excursions into the dense vegetation looking for something they could eat but this was no Gilligan's island! There was no sign of life and nothing they tried to eat seemed of any sustenance to them at all. Gradually, together, they all grew weaker and succumbed to thirst and hunger and died!

Tragically all 17 eventually perished! Nigel was eaten by sharks and the other 16 died on the island. Nobody ever found out what happened to them and to this day their disappearance is still a mystery to their families and friends.

    Such a sad story!

How different it could have been though if Nigel had not been so selfless in giving his life for his friends. He had felt unworthy to put himself first. How could he? He was brought up to put himself last. He was taught in school that it was rude to rush to the front of the line for tuck-shop or anything else for that matter. He always stood back and allowed others to have their way. He was even praised for doing so! He had learned to put others before himself so well; too well in fact!
Nigel had a girlfriend once, but after a few months he realised the relationship really was not working for him but because he was such a kind, caring person and he always put other's before himself he could not tell her that he did not want to continue the relationship. She was so assertive and every time he even thought of calling things off he would start to worry about how that would hurt her feelings. She would always say how much she loved and needed him so it was just too difficult. He went out with her for two years wishing he could find a way to break off the relationship but eventually she had pressured him into engagement and then marriage.

How hard he had tried to make that marriage work. Funny thing was, as he had become more comfortable with the relationship, she had gone cold. After years of trying to re-kindle her affections for him she had up and left him for someone else. Someone who would never be as kind and considerate as Nigel. What a turn-about! Nigel often wondered how and why it had turned out this way.

You see, Nigel had a bad habit of not only putting himself last; he also did not see himself as being worthy enough to ever place himself before anyone else. This was really crazy because he was quite a talented man. He had a lot to offer and it would not have been wrong of him to expect a lot in return.

Of course it was important to consider other people in everything he did. It is good to be humble and polite when it is appropriate, but what would have happened if Nigel had valued his life and what he had to offer the group more highly? He was the only one in the group who had bush survival skills. He knew how to collect the dew for drinking water. He could have lit a fire by rubbing sticks together where the others had failed. They could have attracted a passing ship or aircraft but with no fire the others had no way of doing so. They perished as a result. His knowledge of how to locate and prepare bush tucker would have been invaluable to the group but unfortunately he took these skills with him to his untimely death.

What a tragic waste his self-sacrifice turned out to be. It was a tragedy in every sense of the word!

    The message behind the story
So, did you like that story? I hope not!
You weren't meant to enjoy it. I told it to highlight an important issue that has become so apparent to me over the last few months.
Let me ask you, "Are you a Nigel"?

Here are some ideas as to how you can overcome your thoughts of limited self-worth.
Ask your friends to write you a note telling of the good qualities they see in you. You can tell them it is part of an assignment you are doing if you find it hard to just ask for no reason.
Ask your spouse / girlfriend to write you a note telling of what qualities they see in you.
Read and believe these comments to be true.

Ask yourself if the people you see as more worthy to receive than yourself actually deserve that status. The 16 friends in Nigel's story certainly did not! If Mary asks herself why her husband is more important than she is she might realise that he actually is not. In a marriage they should be equal. If Mary and Martha ask themselves why the children they donate to are more important than they are they would realise that they are more important because they have the ability to donate. They have a responsibility to manage their affairs better. Interest charges on their Credit Cards are costing so much that neither can donate efficiently!

Spend some time recalling your childhood and the significant moments that have shaped your beliefs about yourself that now limit you. What things were said that you took on board as true? What events were turning points? Why do you allow them to have power over you?
I observe my two three old daughter and see that she has no issues of doubting her self worth. Our thoughts of being worthy or unworthy are a learned behavior. Like an elephant that was tethered by a thin rope pegged to the ground as an infant, an adult elephant will never challenge the limiting belief that it can not escape from the constraints of the strand of rope pegged to the ground when it is older. Challenge your rope!

Practice valuing yourself. If you are a parent you probably give and give and give to your children. Ask your children to do something for you and when they complain bitterly do not say how ungrateful they are, but instead realise that their reaction is the consequence of you allowing them to be more important than you in the past. Start to expect and ask for more on a regular basis. It will do you and your children a lot of good.

You need to start telling yourself that you are worthy. Say to yourself many times a day "I deserve to receive good things and I bring good value to the people in my world". "Nobody is more important than me because I can make a difference".

Start keeping a journal of your thoughts about yourself and make a point of each day writing down something good about yourself and what you achieved during the day.

Practice believing for and asking for things you want. See yourself in your minds eye confidently asking for these things. Tell your boss with a smile every day that you will be asking for a pay rise soon because you are doing such a great job.

If you start to see yourself confident and strong and justified in asking and worthy to receive and then rehearse asking in your minds eye, when it is time to ask, you will simply be repeating what you have been rehearsing over and over in your mind. You won't have to think or worry, you can just confidently ask!

Like most things in life, once you become aware of what is happening you can change it. In your journal keep a record of your observations about yourself.

    LIFE’S WAY TO SHORT!
Believe you are worthy of more, ask for more, expect more and be happy to receive more and give more.

To prosperity and beyond, be happy :-))

    Regards

I usually take a long walk or do some push ups some times I will take a little 15 minute session to think about absolutley nothing,

When I first started I would call my mentors to ask for advice, that is the most effective. I still do this just to talk and see if they have any advice.

Finding a mentor is one of the greatest things a new entrepreneur can do for their business.

This may not be to everyone's tastes, but for the past couple of months I've been going to boxing training. For me I can't think of a better way to blast through the blues.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty down. I'm a freelance video editor and I was informed on Sunday that could there be a downturn in shifts, I think I was slapped by Google on my first ever adwords campaign and I have no idea why, and to top if off I was feeling really tired and run down.

Anyway, I really didn't feel like it but I went to boxing training and by the end of it I was on top of the world. I walked to the train station with a couple of the other attendee's and you couldn't shut me up I felt so good. And then today I got offered four shifts next week!

I do go and spar in the ring, but to the body only. But you can go and just do bag and pad work and skipping. If you do go, be prepared as it can be quite intense but for me the benefits are easily worth it. (Even if my left arm is severely bruised from the sparring :-)

On the rare ocasions when I feel depression, I always look to quickly change my PHYSIOLOGY rather than my PSYCHOLOGY. I've learned from Tony Robbins and others its far easier and faster to change my physical posture and body language than to change my thinking.

If I change my physiology my mind will follow suit. This has been one of the most remarkable techniques I've ever experienced. Try it!

Here is one more way you can get motivated in your life:

        Doing CHARITY works.
Wehn you are down, maybe you can go to those old folks house and spend
some time doing charity work there.
Maybe you can even donate some money there.

This will make you feel that you are actually more luckier than a lot of people.

        I guess this works.

If we do something for someone it makes us feel good and helps us in return. It's like on this forum here, giving away free stuff and advice. It helps everyone even the person giving advice. Look how much people reached out and helped you.

Personally I love talking to my daughter, she always seems to put things into perspective in such a simple way. I love the stuff that children say. It's like what they're saying is an obvious thing to do.

I remember feeling down and I was sitting quietly and my daughter asked me why I was so quiet and I just said I had a headache and she said, "I know what, if you help me to make a daisy chain in the garden you'll feel better." We made a daisy chain together and she said, "better now?" And oddly enough, I really was feeling better.

I think it's easy to get wrapped and make things complicated and thinking that the ONLY thing in our life is this business, but let's get real. This business might be brilliant but not as brilliant as the people in our lives that make us happy.

I like what nooraza said about changing your physiology. One of the things I do is something physically taxing, but even this still fits with some type of goal. For example, if I've been wanting to rearrange my office space, I'll move the furniture around.

Another thing I do to change my mindspace is listen to music, the more bass the better because the low notes touch something very base (basic) in you, and releases you. (Sorta metaphysical!)

Of course, I might just practice some escapism and read a few chapters of a good book I've been meaning to get around to.

And the old stand-by? Keep working, plugging forward. After all, reaching a goal, no matter how small, is it's own healing.

I usually get down if I DON"T do anything with my business that day, but sometimes I get down for other reasons. I know what you mean. One thing I DONT do is wallow in my decision to stop working or continue working. Once I make the decision I stick to it. If I decide to go lay down, or go work out etc. I don't feel guilty about that or regret that decision. We have to live in the now and guilt and worry are very distructive emotions. I guess we just have to make sure we don't stay down. "An object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest tends to stay at rest." right?

        Hey wellymulia

For me I guess it really depends on why I am feeling down. While trying not to go into a cerebral hemorrhage, I usually can tell what is getting me down, maybe it is because I am worried? Personally I talk to Abba and He usually has good advice or can give me help, but talking to a friend might be all you need.

If it is physical, it could be something I ate or drank-sometimes I have to stay away from the lattes. Perhaps I have not gotten enough rest, then I either take a nap, read a book watch a movie or go to bed early.

Sometimes it is lack of exercise and I have to get active.

Our body, soul and spirit is meant to live in moderation and when we get out of balance it rears its ugly head many times in our feelings.

        Here's one way to strategize:

When I'm down, I'm usually in a poor state of mind to make decisions or to think of something to help me get back up again.

So, I started a written list. I worked on it at times when I was up, or on an even keel, not down. I made a list of all the specific, concrete things I knew would / could cheer me up.

(Later, after I got married, I had to change some of the items on my list, such as "Walk the mall, look at girls." And, "Talk to attractive sales clerks." But I also added to my list - things I could do WITH my bride; things that my wife could DO TO ME / FOR ME when she knew I was down - or I was getting on her nerves, such as: "Drag me outta the house whether I want to go or not and take me out for a cafe mocha / movie / pizza. Please don't take "NO" for an answer." or "MAKE me leave the house. Grab my arm, DRAG me to the door, open and push." "Fix homemade cheeseburgers and oven fries." or "If I'm not hearing you well enough, get in my face or whack me upside the head until I do. You have my total permission to do this!" And, "If I'm not giving you enough attention for some dumb reason, please grab me by the chin, look me in the eyes, and say, "listen buster . . . " [I repeatedly give my wife permission to get on my case if need be, to take me aside and tell me when I've blown it with one of the kids, or to comment on my driving if I'm doing something dopey, or not acting like I see a red light, etc. This has literally saved our bacon on a number of occasions. Two heads are better than one. Four eyes are better than two. And I ALWAYS make a point of sincerely thanking her when she does speak up about something I need to pay attention to.]) Sorry about that slight digression.

Having the written list where it was easily available, and reminding myself of its value by skimming it every now and then, were vital. If I don't remember the list is there when I'm down, then it doesn't do me any good. I gave my wife her own copy, approximately titled, "What to do when David is acting like a mope or a jerk."

When down, it's too easy to just sit and stew. That's part of the problem, isn't it? So I look at the list, pick something, and JUST DO IT. Whether I "feel like it" or not.

Being "down" is typically about being "stuck" in negative "feeling mode." So waiting until I "feel like it" is a dead end.

For me, the trick is always taking some kind of conscious, intentional action. "Action puts fear to flight." It works for low moods, too. "Action" mode is very different from "feeling" made. And often, I'm in a funk because a CHANGE of action is what's needed.

        Having said all that . . .

There ARE times when "down" is exactly where I need to be. (It depends on what kind of a "down" it is.) If I've been cranking hard for a long time, or doing a lot of "face" time with strangers, then "down" approximately equals "a need to switch gears for the sake of recuperation." Recoup and regroup. Sometimes my body is smarter than I am and I just need to listen to it.

One way I've found to make that recuperation very intentional and comprehensive is to give myself a complete "ESRO" day - Eat, Sleep, & Roll Over. From, say, dinner time one day, through about 36 hours, to morning on the 3rd day. Get up, eat, go back to bed, read a good book, take a nap, get up, munch, back to bed, etc. I don't shave, or shower, or get dressed. I don't answer the phone. I try not to talk to anybody at all. (But am careful not to do it unkindly.) I give myself total permission to be a total slug. (I've never needed or wanted to do that more than once or twice a year, if that.)

        Enjoy.

Conan O'Brien works wonders! So does Jay Leno and David Letterman! Boob-tube has something for everyone.

On the music side, chill out music is soothing and feels like you're doing yoga without doing the actual exercise. A trip to a spa can help you relax too plus tea or any herbal concoction that can help you forget about your worries.

Going out is like releasing yourself from your own bondage of problems. Hanging out with buddies and close friends for a round of poker, dinner, drinking till the wee hours of the morning. It's not exactly recharging but it helps that you have company when you feel the need to rant and rave about anything.

I agree with you Hyaku. Miles Davis rocks! I suggest you try David Benoit for contemporary jazz.

I also prefer new age jazz other than the old skool artists. Sometimes it pays to look back at the early elements of the genre and find other new artists inspired by people like Miles Davis and you move forward with the emergence of new music. It sets the tone for a motivated mood to think of better ideas and achieving goals at the end of the day. Stress relieving music is the greatest drug invented for the warrior of today.

If I'm down I usually think about what is making me down and either try to deal with it or avoid it.

For example if its a lack of money I work harder on one of my projects to achieve a target which will bring some in even if its not as much as I need it still make sme fell better.

If its work thats getting me down and I feel I've done enough I take a break go and play some games with my kids or take them to the beach or if I'm alone listen to music usually dance and rock as the lovey dovey stuff tends to make me feel worse. The one other thing that I find stops me feeling down in the first place is exercise and if it still gets to me I have a go at the punch bag and yes I do mean a canvas bag full of sand and all sorts of other stuff to fill it up. I used to practice Karate so it just reminds me of when I was training.

Its true that activity, running, and exercising in general, will put you in a better mood. Once you get in better shape you will have a better self image and more confidence.

On top of that, when you run/ exercise, this produces endorphin's in your brain. Endorphins make you happy. They are also addicting.. Cocaine produces endorphins in your brain as well.

Whatever you do - DON'T write copy when you're feeling down.

Your subconscious state will (magically?) come through in your writing.

            Anyway...

            I'm a fairly simple creature.

If things aren't going well, sometimes I just take a break and do something else.

Usually the reality of a situation and YOUR EMOTIONS in connection with the same situation are very different things. Anger, frustration and disappointment can easily cloud your perception of the way things REALLY are at any given moment.

Which is why basically all of these methods listed are, in one way or another, a form of "resetting" your mind so you're in a different headspace.

That way, when you return to the issue, you can be more objective - fixing what needs to be fixed, changing what needs to be changed, or perhaps stopping something altogether and trying something else...

...without being immobilized by your emotions.

Or just blame a guru :-)

You can change your whole emotion by just changing those 3 things. So if you down. False yourself to situp back straight breath deep and smile. Then you have to believe that you can be happy and focus on that .. Futhremore yoour lanuage should be stong confident and determind..

Motivation is very important when a person is down.

Success is not a destination, it's a journey.

Dont give up,Refresh your mind and get started again.

Love what you do and do what you love.

Invest you time reading and looking for new ideas.

Sometimes when you run out of ideas and complex yourself further by not focusing on the task at hand, a quick snack can help you replenish brain energy and give you a happier perspective. One thing that can help me is chocolate. It doesn't have to be a lot of chocolate bars but a few tidbits like M&M's or kisses can help you feel good and awaken your senses. The downside is that it can also get you sleepy after a short sugar rush from eating them. Coffee helps too, but two cups should be the limit.

I also learned this from Tony Robbins. In fact as soon as I read this, I sat up straighter. That's also why dancing to upbeat positive music can help. I would also write down ten gratitudes, or things I like about myself, or things I've accomplished, or look in the mirror and say ten positive things to myself.

I rarely feel down anymore. Believe it or not diet can also make a difference. I know of someone who healed their chronic depression through diet. Junk food is not the answer.

Feeling down is a biological requirement of us humans, and those who say they are 'never' down are simply deluding themselves. (Ulterior motives maybe??)

It's an old worn out philosophy I know, but we actually DO have 'Bio-Rythms'. There's nothing we can do about them, we just need to 'go with the flow'.

Realise it's a natural phenomenon, don't try and fight it and it will pass quicker with no obstructions.

By fighting your bio-rythms you are actually 'harming' yourself. A bit like taking prozac or having a 'drink' to brighten yourself up. Just relax, take the day/s off and wake up when ready, totally revitalised.

        Have a happy day ALL.

        Pete.

Exercise lifts the spirits and if you also put on uplifting music at the same time, the mind is focussed elsewhere and this helps.

Or just think of where you want to be in a year's time, and know in your very being that's it's achieveable. Dwell on it, feel and visualise what you will be doing.

Can really help take you out of yourself.

As you can see from all the posts here everyone has his/her own way of getting up and coming out when they feel down.

Find out what works best for you and do it. What works for one may not work for the other because people are unique.

Also, if you could pin down what caused the feeling, it helps. Normally I meditate and refresh myself. But some time I feel it was purely physical then I go out for a walk or do some exercise.

  • If I'm feeling down and unmotivated about something yet I have a goal in front of me I'm trying to accomplish I first try to anchor myself back to what motivated me to set that particular goal in the first place. I think it's important to stay in touch with that original motivation. It's even better if you had a goal that set shivers down your spine, those are easier to get back in touch with. If you find you've just plain lost your motivation for that goal entirely look at what it is you are motivated to do right now and follow your own natural instinct. Sometimes the best way to get things done is to not do them at all.

The second thing I do is analyze what is preventing me from accomplishing this goal right now. At times that does include just taking a break from things and getting your mind off of it. Once I've figured out what my obstacles are I do my best to clear them out and remained focused once I've been away from it for a while and can come back with a fresh mind. Sometimes you'll figure out a whole new way to accomplish it or realize something you overlooked before.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

The idea of a gratitude journal was made popular when Oprah proclaimed on her talk show that she keeps one herself.

The gratitude journal took the world by storm, but seems to have died down over the last few years. If you don't already keep a gratitude journal, you should.

It is a great way to record daily blessings and will motivate and inspire you to look for the good in everything.

By focusing on gratitude, you become aware of those things and thus create a shift in your thinking to the positive.

    It rarely get down anymore.

But, I had to work for a long time on my mindset.

Because I never view failure, or something not working like I had planned as a failure.

In fact, "failure" is a good thing in my books. No matter what happens, I always get a lesson from it, and things are ALWAYS better off because I had "failed" that time.

It's a hard thing to get, but once you do, you can get a lot of things done and things start to go your way.

usually if I get down, which is rarely, it's because I'm tired. So I take time out for myself. I pour myself a glass of red wine, I fill the bath with warm bubbles, and I soak and sip and let my mind wander until I start to look like a prune...lol...
then I get out of the tub, and either listen to new age music, like soundscapes, etc, or I watch a comedy, read a book, until I fall asleep. Ah, a nice long dreamless sleep of the exhausted.

Then the next day I'm good as new.

Taking time to rejuvenate is so important. No one should ever feel guilty about taking time off for yourself when you need it. I think it's important to love yourself first, because only then can you truly love someone else.

I've discovered that usually when you're feeling down, it's really something in you that's calling for help, and you have to give yourself that help out of LOVE. I don't mean selfish love, either. Unconditional love. The kind of love you give a little child. So, you face your pain, your worry, what ever it is that gets you down, and you give it unconditional love. You pamper that child within you who is just crying for your attention, because it needs time for play or for rest, or maybe just to be told he or she is loved!

And sometimes you just have to be still. We lead such busy lives. We're always doing this or that because we are always working toward something. That goal we've made...a commitment...a promise...if we work hard now we will be able to enjoy ourselves later.

Well I now say, take time out to play often, because NOW is what counts..not later, tomorrow, next week, next year...

      now.

      life is too damn short.

      have fun and be happy...

I agree with you Mark, one of the best therapies is social contact. Sometimes you just have to get a decent company of close friends to keep your sanity intact and you need not talk about anything related to what makes you down. Others prefer the loner approach, if the problem is about other people. Music, booze, and friends keep me stable for a day but of course, it's back to reality when you go back to work and choose to conquer your problems. I also agree that physiology is the way to work up your psychology. A sound body can give you that necessary recharge and a brand new state of mind.

      Whenever I feel down,

      1. I clean my house a lot , especially bathroom and kitchen.

      2. Watching Queen's music video ( greatest hits ) . " We are the champions " and " Don't stop me now " and dancing with it, it always gives me super power.

      3. Before going to sleep, read the script that was written in the book " Feelings Buried Alive Never Die ... " by Karol Truman.

The next day after I did one of these, or just after I did them, I usually get good orders for my business. It's like Magical. For refreshing my feeling , going to the shopping mall and just hang around, drink star bucks coffee frappucino with my husband makes me feel good, too.

Also I do my other interests, such as watching beauty and art, my favorite figure skater's skating.

Also watching someone who is very successful inspires me and give me power such as Olympic athlete's performances.

Or re-read one of my favorite books " The winning mindset " by Jim Brault and Kevin Seaman.

Don't forget that time will heal your wounds! But try to focus on things that are good that have happened in your life. Be grateful for that.

Assure yourself and say" This too shall pass"

Pay attention to your mind and make sure it doesn't take you too far down to think negatively. Cause what you think of quite often, will eventually take a physical form and manifest in your reality.

Also I have a vision board in my office that I sit and look at visualising myself having those goals and giving thanks. I do this 4 times a day that way I am creating a change in my brains chemistry and keeping it focussed on the goals I am working for.

Everyone can get down, but not everyone can get motivated to keep on going when they get down, and so many people give up 5 minutes before their goal is about to break through.

So many good answers have already been given, we all go about it in a different way, but to everyone, I remind you of a Quote by Sir Winston Churchill "Never give up, Never give Never Give up!"

It depends on how I feel and what I feel I "need" to get done.

Lately I've been better about giving myself some space...but I'm also getting better and quickly moving through "feeling down" because feeling down doesn't serve me. I tend to focus on the things I'm going for, and will reach for a "better feeling thought".

No matter how slight, reachin for a better feeling thought starts to move me through the process of getting through "feeling down" and getting me back on track.

What I do when I feel de-motivated is to take the day off and go do cardio, which for me is walking for a few miles. By the time I am done I will feel better and be able to think of a solution or another way to approach what I took the day off from.

Another thing I do is call my team in and do a brainstorm session and see if everyone is on the same page for our current projects. By the time we are done talking I have re-motivated myself.

On a down day, I have to keep working because that's when you know that you are closer to success.

If I'm feeling down, I will watch motivating videos of people conquering some obstacle or being successful. Empowerment is very important to have in those down days and a great Youtube video or one of my personally saved ones, I'll just start playing them and my mind begins to transform and readjust. Always hang in there.

For me, I would try to avoid feeling down. Some of my best practices I use to nudge myself should I feel down or just when I am going to feel down...

    1. I simply SMILE, LAUGH and make another person happy by telling jokes and act funny. Smiling and laughter are as contagious as yawning.
    2. I lie on the bed and recite my personal mantras (you can create your own) - "It will be all over when you wake up" or "Tomorrow is a better day" or "Rest first, think later".
    3. I would SING! Sing my favourite songs. Pour out my emotions into the songs.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below is a short story I wish to share...

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT FAILURE WAS THE END...

John was standing at the roof top of his 9th-storey apartment, slowing walking to the edge. He then looked down. He saw people walking around, cars zooming here and there.

The first drop of tears, trickled down from his eyes. In his mind, he thought back. He felt his life was terrible, in fact the worst life no one had ever have... He just went bankrupt. For the past 15 years, he has changed numerous jobs, basically job hopping. Never once, he felt he was successful. He lost his wife who took away their children due to his bankruptcy... He just couldn't think anymore.

Feeling devastated and lost, he lifted his left foot up and walk towards the air. In his mind, he was sure he wanted to end all these immediately which he felt is unfair and suffering... He did the free fall...

Along the way in his free fall, he got the opportunity to see what he had yet to see from his neighbours...

On the 8th floor, there was Anna having an intimate affair with her best friend's boyfriend....

On the 7th floor, Mrs Anderson was shouting and physically abusing Mr Anderson...

On the 6th floor, fat and lazy Peter sitting on his couch munching his chips watching TV.

On the 5th floor, Craig who just lost one of his limbs in an tragic accident was still trying hard to stand up.

On the 4th floor, respected neighbour Uncle Nicholas was trying on his wife's panties and bra.

On the 3rd floor, filial Alex was cleaning and changing his mum who went bonkers after a divorce.

On the 2nd floor, John closed his eyes...

Just before landing on the ground floor, John realized that his life was after all not the worst... There are much worse ones out there. But then it was all too late...

His neighbours gathered around his body and shooked their head. In their mind, they sighed, "After all, my life is not as bad as John"...

Is life really that bad? Think twice.. Don't jump the gun. Failure is never the end to everything or anything. Sometimes, you just need a little nudging to change your life.

Personally, I take the day off to cool down and relax. However, my girl suggested the best and natural way to do so is to submerge oneself in water to drown out the noise, and just lay there and float.

Just follow the advice of the song by Argent: Hold Your Head Up!

Our physical bodies and our emotions are tied together. If you hold your head up, you will affect your emotional state. (The Dog Whisperer once used the method of holding a dog's tail erect to help it stop being frightened.)

If you don't believe me, put your head into your chest, and say, "I feel good." while looking at the floor.

How do you feel? Pretty lousy, right!

Now, throw your arms in the air, hold your head up, and yell out, "I'm so depressed!"

    Got you, didn't I?

    Make it a great day!

    Brother Paul

Ok this is really simple and effective, write down every thing you are grateful for and also write down EVERY SINGLE happy moment of your life, doing this will bring a smile to your face and will shift your emotions straight away, then read these every morning when you first wake up and every night before you go to sleep, trust me, this is the easiest way to guarantee a good mood.

I usually stop and and close my eyes for awhile. Give myself a little pause and gain back all the positive vibes. I sometimes reflect so as to release what has been bothering me. Just a silent moment is all I will need to start again.

This is a great question. I have anchors that I use for peak state (check out Tony Robbins or NLP) and I change my physiology and act as if I am 'in the zone'. I have the reasons I am doing this written down in a word file to help motivation.

Finally very occasionally even when I have done all this I still won't feel up for it so i ask myself is there resistance within me. Alot of the time you create your own resistance and the more you try and fight something the stronger it gets. Better to lower your expectations in this situation just get started, steady away and build up some momentum.

Finally if you can't work then this is your body telling you something - you need a break. Have the day off!

Just last night I went back to Susan Boyle's "Britain's Got Talent" Audition on YouTube and felt a sense of wonder as the audience first rolled their eyes at her, then gave her a standing ovation at the end of her song. She broke chart history yesterday selling 700,000 copies of her CD in 1 week.

Now true, we don't all have Susan's voice, but we can all relate to having an unfilled dream, like she did. So keep plugging away. Success might come in the most unlikely form.

  • When I feel down, I will usually change my surroundings. Example could be to arrange to meet friends that can encourage me, or ones that I can share a good laugh with. Even going to another environment (maybe by the sea) and draw inspiration from it. Sometimes I just totally cut off from work and focus on living my life.

Then after that, I will find that I am re-energized again, motivated to taking the next actions and ready to get stuck in... Hope it helps..

I take a minute to cool down, true. As soon as I recognize the ennui. I use it as my trigger.
Often, then, it's as simple as this (I know it's gimmicky, but so is low motivation; it's just a "thing," right?):
Read quotes by Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, George Carlin and Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Put a smile behind those thoughts that will motivate your moment!

If you're feeling down, a good thing to do is to look at all the things that you're grateful for. For instance you can be grateful for how much you've learned in internet marketing over the last year. You can see how much more effective you are at growing your online business now than you were 3, 6 or 9 months ago. The more things you can feel grateful for, the more you can get out of that funk.

Basically when I'm down I want to do anything but work. It's usually too depressing.

I think it depends on "how" you feel down. Sometimes it's ok to let it go, not force yourself to do anything, knowing that your energy and mood will pick up later. We all have to give it (the negatives) out of ourselves sometimes (as long as it doesn't happen all the time). Nobody is always at 100%.

If the reason for feeling down is something specific, it's a good time to think through the situation, and see what you can do. In this case, you might not want to just let it go, but figure out what the best thing is to do, and do it.

      My opinion.
