Self help or money grabbing?

Hi

Today I thought about how there are so many "self help" gurus and most of them are dishonest, or are just selling false ways and false hope to their customers.

There are some people that sell things they did not even researched or wrote, and charge a lot of money for them to sell people hope, but that is as far as they go.

There are some that are really good, don't get me wrong, but most have never helped anyone (other than themselves).

It is time to make things clear.
It is time to let people know who are the good guys.

If you have a good "self help" guide with a proven record of really helping people out, please share it here.

I do not want to expose the other type of so called "gurus". that is not the point of this post, so if you have nothing good to say about someone it is best NOT TO SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

I will start with
Lester Levenson (dead)
Wallace D. Wattles (dead)
Neville (dead)
JoreJj Z. Elprehzleinn (very much alive)
Steve Seretan (Lester Levenson's original student, alive)
and why not... me, after all I do help people and have transformed several lives.
Anthony Robbins (alive, amazing guy).

Who would you add to this list?
By the way if you are on this list and on this forum, lets us know what you are up to.

Wow, that's a huge claim. What makes you think that "most of them are dishonest" and "most have never helped anyone"? I would have a difficult time believing that percent would be tiny - if it even exists at all. If their book helps someone doesn't that count? I can think of crooks trying to scam money a lot of ways but I never considered writing a "self help or self improvement book as one of them. But it sounds like you've done all the heavy research already so I'd be interested in just one example (you can PM me) of a self help author being "dishonest".

As much as I try to read and understand Wallace I find him too hard to read sometimes. Robbo rocks of course.

Also, I'm not sure I understand your poll question. Is it possible for anyone to not believe in helping themselves?

Everyone who is dishonest wants to be. Otherwise it's naivety. The OP is suggesting that MOST authors who write self help books are dishonest. I just don't see how that makes sense.

I went to a series of seminars with T. Harv Ecker and I have to say that no matter who someone is people walk away feeling like a) he's a total scam b) he is the real deal and he turned my life around.

and the truth is probably somewhere in between. They help you see a path you may have not noticed before or even thought possible. They try to help you discover that path. They try to make a profit doing it. Some of them turn into something of a cult figure.

You are the one who makes the decision. If you are a sheep or have sheep like tendencies those people can talk you into their whole program and you will come out a different person. Is that different person who you want to be or who they talk you into?
I quit my full time job after a few Ecker seminars and I blame him for that. I blame him for my loss of traditional income and my new found freedom. I take credit personally for the same two things. (new found is really the wrong term, it's been about 6 years since I did that.) But the point is I make my life. Harv or any of the other gurus try to help. I don't think there are many that don't want their followers to do well and be happy.

Life is what you make it.

Sorry, forgot to say Harv's "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" is an interesting book that really made me think about income and money in a whole new way.

The thing about being a guru in the self-help industry for me was that I never intended for that to happen to me. So when it did because I shared tools and systems I had designed for achieving goals and dreams I was surprised. Pleasantly surprised by the people that were getting wonderful results that it is was working. Surprised that like Nathan says a lot of people were saying other stuff didn't work and yes true they are getting dishonest or false claims a lot. It really does happen a lot in that industry.

Well, I am not talking about the obvious ubber famous self help gurus.

I am talking about all the Internet Marketers who have joined this forum (for example) to find topics that interested people and got some ghost writer to write a book for them.

Some people purchase because they are very good at internet marketing, but the actual books are just a rehash of everything you would find in this forum, nothing original nor anything spiritually inspired.

Very few have had divine inspiration.

Please keep in mind I did put some of the good guys that I know in here, and I asked others to put some more, so far I got only one more name.

That process can be very useful especially to those planning to spend some money but the wolves are awake and they would rather devour you than let you go through with it.
