Napolean Hill Affirmation or not? which is better and why?

Hi ALL

Napolean Hill in his book "Think and Grow Rich" explains how to write what we want, basically as an affirmation with a date of when we expect to reach or complete that goal/desire/want and to then read this in the morning and night.

In a nutshell its an affirmation with a date to be read morning and night.

The question is almost all i have read about affirmations clearly explain how we should say it in the NOW! so whats with napolean then?

thanks

You have affirmations that you want to be/achieve now and you have short, medium and long term goals. They are what need a date. Simple.

I didn't think I could explain it any clearer.
An affirmation and a goal can be the same thing.
    You want some things now
Others take longer and that is why you have a date.
e.g. you want to make $100000. You won't do that today but you can st a short term goal of making $20000 by a certain date. A medium term goal of $50000 by a longer date and a long term goal of $1 million by a longer date.

I can NOT explain it any clearer.

I think if my studying of goal setting and affirmations is correct your confusing 2 seperate things and also mis-aligning that with the workings of the subconscious, which is why i asked for an explanation, however since you feel you can not explain it any clearer i appreciate the time, never the less to avoid a repeat and just incase im not being clear ill offer a clear distinction for others and thus help to reveal my predicament with what Mr.Hill had suggested

An Affirmation is a statement of intent said in the present personal positive to create new beliefs in the subconscious. The reason is it present is because what is in the future will never get here as the subconscious will work at keeping it in the future, whereas by making it a present tense affirmation we are programming into our minds that its a reality now and thus causing the RAS (reticular activating system) as well as the automatic success mechanism (psycho-cybernetics) to cause the subconscious to bring to our reality that affirmation that we have impressed upon it.

A goal is just that a goal, however what napolean hill is suggesting is to make it into a future tense personal positive affirmation and then by reading it morning and night, to impress it like an affirmation or visualisation upon the subconscious at the 2 natural times that we are most suggestible, which are during the alpha/theta states

So my confusion is why would napolean ask us to add a future date to impress upon the subconscious which is clearly what he is asking us to do?

By having a date on the affirmation, it may not be present, but your subconscious mind can't keep pushing it further into the future either since it is dated. When you state a goal as an affirmation, your subconscious mind will be working all day long in the background trying to figure out how to achieve that goal by that date.

Over the past two months, I do two things (nearly) every morning:
    - I say my vision for where I want to be in the future.
    - I read and say my goals for the month.

If nothing else, being aware of them helps me to filter out the crap that won't help me achieve them - and focus on the things that will.

    Definitely important.

If I remember correctly, in the context of the book, Hill means goals. So he wants you to set a deadline in your mind for the goals you want to achieve. An example from the book would be the guy who decided he would obtain a million dollars by the end of the week.

Yes Mr. Hill is talking about goals in the book, but then he mentions that you should state them at least twice a day, in the morning and night. The OP, sees this as a form of affirmation, which is correct. But he has been taught that affirmations should be present tense, which is a good rule of thumb, but rules can be bent sometimes and stating a dated goal as an affirmation can be a very good thing. Your mind is always working on how to achieve your goals even when you are not consciously thinking about them, so by stating your goals with a date twice daily like an affirmation you are programming your mind to think of creative solutions to achieve that goal by that date.

    Interesting discussion! Here's my take:

The value of Napoleon Hill's suggested approach is that on each day you repeat your goal, the 'deadline' gets closer and closer; so you're creating a growing feeling of expectation and motivation, which provides a lot of positive energy in creating desired outcomes.

I wrote a very long thorough reply here that has got deleted

So instead i wanted to add that napolean hill has also mentioned this dated affirmation process in the chapter of autosuggestion but ofcos i have come across it earlier in the chapters that came prior, basically to say that yes he knew he was talking about impressing the subconscious mind

based on that, i want to say I understand how someone kindly put above that rules can be bent, but is that really the case with the subconscious mind and if it was then surely napolean hill wouldve mentioned it so...so am i still confused and searching for the answer to this...YES..anyone help?
