[inspirational] "Hey wait a minute! You can't do THAT!!"...
This is a mindset shift that is really helping me move ahead (finally).
It's actually something I noticed many years ago, but I have not allowed it to fully inspire me, until now(!) Call it "inspirational procrastination!"
Let me explain the concept through an analogy...
Have you ever seen David Copperfield (magician)? At his peak, he was a world phenom. His TV specials were watched by millions. He was a pioneer in the magic industry. In his magic, he was often portrayed as a larger-than-life "hero." This is also how Houdini portrayed himslef, in his day. Whenever Copperfield would conclude an illusion, 'IN TRIUMPH," there would be a close-up of him -- WITH HIS HAIR BLOWING IN THE WIND. This is the "heroic," "iconic" image he pushed -- that one snapshot.
Now, here's the analogy -- How did he RECREATE that iconic image, live, ON STAGE at his touring shows? I've had the privilege of seeing the show backstage. What struck me was HOW that hair-blowing-in-the-wind was recreated on stage... WITH A REGULAR HOUSEHOLD FAN -- the kind anyone can buy at Wal-Mart for $35. Yup -- just offstage, just out of view, in the wings is a cheapo household fan, blowing his hair at just the right moment. That's all it is -- NO FANCY EQUIPMENT.
When I saw that, I was quite surprised! A heroic, icon image was being created by some cheapo household fan!
That fan is what Dan Kennedy calls a tiny hinge that opens big doors.
Many years ago, I was hanging out on a forum like linkedin. I was in contact with many, many people. 99% were like me -- lurking around, ranting, opinionating, giving advice, getting advice, etc.
Then one day I saw one of the "regulars" had SUDDENLY launched a very ambitious, very large, very WELL DONE website. It seemed to come from completely out of the blue. What made it even more surprising is, almost ***ALL*** the services he used to create the site were the other "regulars" on the forum!! I remember in particular, he used a graphic designer who worked very, VERY cheap, because she was just getting started. She was very TALENTED, but she just wanted work -- she was an "unknown" + had no "rep."
When I saw he had used HER for all his graphics, I remember DISTINCTLY thinking -- "Hey wait a minute, you can't do THAT!!"
I was thinking, "you can't use some 'unknown' graphic designer for some large-scale, ambitious, 'official' website!!! You have to use 'real' designers, you have to go through the 'real' 'approved' route -- and that's EXPENSIVE + UNATTAINABLE!"
He was using tiny hinges to open BIG DOORS. Somehow he realized this --- ALL THE RESOURCES YOU NEED ARE VERY LIKELY TO BE WITHIN ARM'S REACH... RIGHT AT THIS VERY MOMENT!! --
Kind of like Dorothy saying, "There's no place like home."
Or that famous "Acres of Dimonds" story.
What was really happening was, I WAS MAD AT THIS GUY for realizing this truth, and ACTING ON IT! And, the worst part is, he was using "cheap" "untapped" "ignored" "overlooked" resoruces I ALREADY KNEW ABOUT, and COULD HAVE EASILY USED MYSELF AT ANY TIME!
God that pissed me off!
So... Look around -- right now -- MAYBE all the resources YOU need for AMAZING success, are all within your reach, right now, at this moment!
What small hinges can you use, to swing open YOUR large door(s)?!?!
What overlooked, cheap, untapped, ignored resources can YOU use -- right now -- today -- all within a few clicks of the mouse, or an email to gather up YOUR tiny hinges?
They don't need to be "official" or "approved" or "expensive" or "traditional" or "normal" or "guru-based" or even "logical" or "expected."
You are a BAKER. Create your recipe (your plan) -- then gather up your ingredients (resources, people). If the recipe calls for sugar, you may not need some "special" "unattainable" "expensive" sugar. Look around -- a perfectly good, just as sweet sugar, could be right in your cabinet already -- two paces away from where you are right now! Three clicks of your mouse away! Get creative -- look around -- you'll be AMAZED, I'm sure of it!
Think of that iconic, heroic, hair-blowing-in-the-wind image that was the inspiration for an entire multi-million dollar "brand" -- CREATED BY SOME CHEAPO HOUSEHOLD FAN -- a resource ANYONE has access to, at ANY TIME!
Don't get mad that others are doing this -- TAKE ACTION and do it yourself!! You've ALREADY got DOZENS of tiny hinges at your disposal, right here on this forum. Get together with fellow warriors -- enlist their help! (here on the forum, many fellow warriors genuinely want to help, and the prices they charge are very LOW!)
So, OPEN THOSE GIANT DOORS! Make the OTHERS say to YOU, "Hey wait a minute -- You can't do THAT!"
