Exactly, the will brings out the competitive spirit. Without the will power, people are just going through the motions just for the sake of going through the motion.

It's like a person who goes to the gym to get fit or lose weight. Some people will just go because they WANT to lose weight, but they are not determined to do it. They go through the motions, but will not try their best efforts each and every time. Guess what? They will not get the results that they want because their effort wasn't there.

The ones that actually lose weight are the ones who are determined to lose weight. They will utilize their time productively at the gym to and putting in their best effort each and every time. When you do that you will get the results you so desire.

However, I caution that not too much weight is given to the role of will, at least with respect to the effectiveness of will power. Mindset is very important, but so is action and placing yourself in a good environment that reinforces behavior.

Very few people succeed with will power alone and emphasizing will can put a big burden on people who fail often because of other factors.

I have not seen this to be the case though. Even with "other factors", I have observed people who have, against all odds, achieved what was believed the impossible with the force of will.

And of course, action will be required. It is the will in these people that keep them taking action even when they run into difficulties.

And although there may be a way to find an exception to just about anything given extreme circumstances, this is still great advice for the majority.
