Goals,Affirmations,Visualizations - MOST EFFECTIVE TIPS

If you agree with me, most of us have found some success with using 'Affirmations' but results have always been inconsistent to the degree that you cannot depend on it 100% of the time and mostly have mixed feelings about using it for all your goals.

I personally came to the conclusion that the degree of success with Affirmations is directly proportional to two things 1. The Design of the Verbal Affirmation 2. How effectively you are using it.

The following tips on designing a verbal affirmation is the best I've come across so far, it's simple and gets the point across perfectly.. I'm very excited to share this stuff with you. From now on follow these simple ten steps to create a affirmation for any goal you want to achieve.

(Source : Release Your Brakes by James Newman (Book))

DESIGN RULES FOR
WORDING YOUR VERBAL AFFIRMATIONS

1. PERSONAL. Be sure that you are in the affirmation. Use a first person pronoun such as "I," "me/* "my" in each one. It may be tempting to use a platitude like "Patience is a virtue," or "Enthusiasm makes sales," but such sentences will have ho effect whatever on your behavior. If you find
yourself feeling some tension about your frequent use of "I" in your affirmations, simply recognize that tension as one more illustration of the effect of childhood programming on your behavior. The purpose of this entire exercise is to bring about some lasting changes in the self image, and the only way that will happen is with first person experience in your imagination, stimulated by a first person affirmation.

2. POSITIVE. In each case, the affirmation must describe the attitude that you want,to cultivate or more toward, not what you want to diminish or move away from. Instead of, "I don't lose my temper," the better affirmation would be, "I am calm and even tempered."

3. PRESENT TENSE, Reference to the past or the future in an affirmation will diminish or destroy the effect of the triggering sentence. "I am getting things done more promptly than I used to" will stimulate the experiences and emotions related to past behavior--and that is not what you want to be dwelling on. An affirmation phrased in the future tense always remains in the "some day" category and reinforces the fact that you are not behaving that way here and now. Instead of "I am going to be more patient," or, "One of these days I am going to get organized," the better affirmations are, "I am a very patient, understanding person," and, "I organize my time very carefully and follow the plans that I have made."

4. ACHIEVEMENT. The affirmation should indicate that the desired change has been achieved, not that you are growing or progressing in that area. Thus, "I have a sincere, outgoing, warm regard for others" will have a much greater effect than "I am steadily improving my warmth toward others." Your objective is to develop an affirmation which will easily evoke an imagined experience, and it is much easier to imagine the accomplished change than a changing process.

5. CATEGORICAL. Do not compare yourself with others in your affirmations. Instead of, "I am the most productive sales person in our company," a better wording is, "I am an excellent sales person and my production is very high." Comparing yourself with others opens the door to unconscious acts which might impair the effectiveness of other people
rather than strengthen your own.

6. ACTION. The affirmation should represent an action, not an ability. Wording such as "I have the ability to remember names," or "I can relax," simply makes the affirmation more difficult to experience in the imagination. Better wording is, "I remember people's names easily," and "I relax easily and quickly whenever I want to do so."

7. EXCITEMENT. Whenever possible put the positive emotion you want to cultivate right into the wording of the affirmation. For example, 'T am very proud to be free of the smoking habit, and I feel terrific!" or "I am a very enthusiastic person and I enjoy expressing my enthusiasm and excitement to others," are affirmations which are enhanced by the positive feelings included in them.

8. ACCURACY AND BALANCE. In those areas where a specific, measurable objective is part of your definition, do not overshoot in the hope that results may be achieved more rapidly. If you are affirming a particular weight level, golf or bowling score, or some other change which can be measured, then pinpoint the affirmation to the exact level you wish to achieve. Be careful what you affirm--it will happen!

9. REALISTIC. Do not affirm perfection. Such affirmations only lead to frustration, and in some cases are not truly representative of what you actually want to accomplish. For example, the affirmation, "I am always enthusiastic," may lead to frustration--and there are some occasions when it is not desirable to be enthusiastic. Look out for words like "always," "perfectly," and "completely."

10. YOURSELF ONLY. Sometimes it may be very tempting to write out an affirmation about someone else's behavior, such as "People like me," or "My children admire and respect me." Unfortunately, your affirmations will only have an effect upon your behavior. In fact, there can even be a "backlash" effect if your affirmation develops an expectancy which conflicts with the perceived behavior of the other person. Better affirmations are, "I enjoy building friendships with others," and "I am the kind of parent who earns and deserves the respect and admiration of my children."

Designing a good affirmation isn't enough..

Some key concepts to understand Affirmations better..

#1. Goals : When you set a goal and program it into your "REALITY" structure, a conflict develops between "the way things are" and "the way things are supposed to be" which stimulates creativity and releases the necessary energy to achieve the goal.

There is one more aspect of the conflict resolution process which we do not yet clearly understand, but which should at least be mentioned. Sometimes your mental system seems to be able to tap outside sources of information or inspiration through some channel other than the conscious process of perception. This may be related to parapsychology--telepathy, clairvoyance etc.--or for some it may seem to have religious or spiritual implications.

Setting goals in itself releases Internal Pontential and attracts External Potential and triggers your creativity(conflict resolution) to achieve the desired outcome.

#2. Affirmations : Simply put 'Affirmations' is just another powerful to tool that helps us program our sub-conscious mind into believing a New reality (notion) by using Auto suggestions.

#3. How Affirmations work: Affirmations is the use of Verbal thoughts to trigger emotional and conceptual thoughts and feelings to create an image.
When we are able to use Affirmations successfully to change our 'Reality Structure/Notion' in our mind - our Mind/Brain/Heart starts using all it's internal and external potential to bring that 'Internal reality' into real world manifestation. We continuously act and produce results according to our reality structure that we have formed about our abilities. HUMAN BEHAVIOR TENDS TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL'S CURRENTLY DOMINANT "REALITY" STRUCTURE. If we can change that Reality Structure to something more inclined to our desired outcome - we can accelerate the process of achieving our goals many times over. This is a scientific fact.

If your mind have accepted something as the 'Reality' - the outer world and your internal potential starts working in various ways to guide you to experience that reality in the real world.

PLEASE NOTE : From my personal experience, I wouldn't say Affirmations or Visualization guarantees SUCCESS but it definitely speeds up the whole process by triggering new ideas, thoughts and unseen opportunities to manifest the 'Perceived reality' into real world experience.

Some things to know about yourself (your mind) before we proceed..

a. We've unlimited potential or at least much more potential than we think we actually do because of our negative conditioning and low achievements of our past.

b. 'Positive emotional patterns' or 'positive expectancy' helps you release your brakes and utilize your full potential and abilities to achieve almost anything we now think is impossible.

c. HUMAN BEHAVIOR TENDS TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL'S CURRENTLY DOMINANT "REALITY" STRUCTURE and your Reality Structure is built by how you filter information and the feelings associated with the world around you. Due to varying environment in which we receive and accept information we associate feelings to them and limit our potential to that REALITY we form in our mind - which is highly inaccurate due to the filters in our mind.
(Knowledge + Feelings = Reality Structure or Attitude Patterns)

d. NO ONE ELSE CAN DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE WITHIN YOUR SYSTEM. ONLY YOU CAN DO THAT!

e. Our REALITY Structure can be changed by Affirmations and Visualization (Creative Imagination)

I x V = "R"
Imagination times vividness equals "REALITY"!

TO THE DEGREE THAT YOU EXPERIENCE AN EVENT VIVIDLY IN YOUR IMAGINATION, IT IS ACCEPTED AND RECORDED SUBCONSCIOUSLY AS "REALITY"--SOMETHING WHICH HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

f. All lasting change in the human behavior starts on the inside, with a changed image of 'REALITY'.

Quick Tips on how to use your Affirmations more effectively:

1. First set a few goals : You can set as many as 20+ different goals pertaining to different areas of your life. Number of goals doesn't matter as long as they are congruent to each other. Don't be afraid to set lofty goals - lofty goals generate more creativity and has many other benefits.

Once you have a set of goals you can either focus on the top few or all of them depending on whatever you're comfortable with.

2. Use the 'DESIGN RULES FOR WORDING YOUR VERBAL AFFIRMATIONS' points to create highly effective Affirmations for each goals. (See above)

3. Affirmations can either be read loud to yourself or another dynamic idea is to record your affirmations and listen to them. My research shows even though this is not a widely used method - but people have found great results listening to their own voice.

4. Remember, There are three media that we use at a conscious level which, together, contribute to the development of attitudes (Reality). The most obvious of these, to most people is the VERBAL medium. We think with words.
The three media of thought, verbal, conceptual, and emotional, are flowing continuously in your mental system-- at least during your waking hours.

Affirmations is the use of Verbal thoughts to trigger emotional and conceptual thoughts and feelings to create an Attitude Patter (Reality).

Remember, IMAGINATION X VIVIDNESS = REALITY

5. Two specific times to do your affirmations - The 15 minutes before sleep and the few minutes after you wake up still in bed. You can carry your affirmations with you and use it as many times as you like all through out the day - but the most effective times are the few minutes exactly before and after sleep hours. I wouldn't get into the scientific explanation to that - trust me on this.

6. THE KEY INGREDIENT - (The most important piece of the puzzle). While doing your affirmations "LET THE POSITIVE EMOTIONS/FEELINGS FLOW THROUGH YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM and live the experience momentarily.

(Remember; Imagination X Vividness = Reality)

You get the point, right?

You feelings and emotions build your reality structure, allow the verbal affirmations to create those feelings and experience them as it is already a part of your life.

REAPING RESULTS..

7. Once you start using affirmations sincerely (extreme dedication but without exerting too much effort), within only a few days or hours depending on the degree of your success, you'll develop this positive attitude towards those area of your life.

This is the time to START acting on your hunches and intuitions. Our intuitions somehow already know what is right for us - and you'll probably have new opportunities coming your way during this time.

During this time, listen to your inner voice more often, have an open mind to change and be alert to passing opportunities.

This will make all the difference, once you think you've made significant changes in your mind using Affirmations, the only way to rip it's benefits are to be driven by your gut instincts(intuition) there on and be ready to act on your hunches. (It may cost you sometime, but gut instincts are way more valuable than our logical instincts) and it is always congruent to your life's ultimate purpose.

I've thoroughly enjoyed writing this post, hope it contributes to your success in some way. Do let me know what you if I was able to help you understand these concepts better, and what has been your personal experience with Affirmations.

Any new tips or additional information that I could add in this post is welcomed.

    Hi,
I was listening to an interesting interview last night by a millionaire called Andy Shaw.
He was talking about how he discovered that, like with a computer, you need to clear your mind of viruses (he calls them bugs), so that whatever excellent (self dev) program you 'download' will be able to work OK. That not doing so was what made the difference in whether any such program continued to work beyond the enthusiasm immediately following doing whatever course. I would suggest this is also why some people get better results from affirmations.
Personally I integrate them into my daily workflow rather than 'chant' them, so I repeatedly remind my usual and higher mind my intentions. It does get some remarkable results which I would attribute to LOA law of attraction.
Direct example I set it up so I repeatedly used the word dolphins as part of something
Within a few months I was handed the caretaking of a site for healers and LOA practitioners helping dolphins which has also led to publishing deals and radio interviews
Also dolphins have a lot to teach us about how we use our minds as their brains are very similar to what long term meditators develop theirs to be.
I have practised things like meditation for a very long time which does help with clearing such and also with clearing a channel for accessing higher mind.
I liked Andy's simple techniques though and think they will assist my clearing anything that's still in my way.

@77 do any of your new books cover this in particular 'Get out of your own way' sounds very promising.
I was thinking it might be good to do a comparison as even on special offer Andy's course costs a lot more, as is usual with such courses.
Andy also offer a membership site as part of his, which enables folks to share their findings on working with the techniques, I find that is always helpful as folk tend to be mutually supportive and can get feedback on what they find works or have difficulties with. Great for finding like minded friends also.

Btw Is there another name for cybernetic-transposition. Is it related to Quantum Jumping or NLP. I've heard of Cybernetics and Cybernauts.

Great post. I also heartily believe in affirmations and that you can really add to your ability to manifest by creating a matching affirmation for your desires.

My main problem is that I get the affirmations created, then go on to the next thing. Inevitably, I forget all about the written affirmations until they show up some days later. My best results have occurred when I've had an all-consuming problem - thinking and worrying about it all day - building different scenarios. All at once, I just KNOW the solution.

If I could just translate that process to plans and wishes instead of problems, I'd have it made!

Again, thanks for the great post!

We instinctively seek affirmation. If you ever visit a playground, you will hear the kids imploring their moms, "Look at me." It is almost never, "Mom, see what Billy can do."

The person who consistently affirms people will do well in the social media realm. If you announce your latest blog post, and someone broadcasts it, you will pay attention, right?

Thank you for sharing your insights, I believe that being consistant is a key to achieving goals, just keep in mind you need to focus on improving what you are doing - and everyday make sure you are improving just a little bit more, success doen't happen as a big bang rather as a result of constantly improving- take baby steps each and every day, and every week/month/year when you look back you will see how much progress you've made.

Love how you break down the components of the power of affirmations, and then detail how to implement, your "chances" of succeeding increase exponentially. I put "chances" in quotes, because of course by your intentional focus, you have moved from "chance" into "probability"!

I also like what you said about goals. The only thing I would add is that sometimes people tend to sabotage their goals time and time again. Until they discover their pattern of sabotage, they are bound to repeat it.

Were there period of times where you guys just didnt wanted to do nor think about your goals? (eg. Binge eating despite trying to enforce diets )

I get this escapist mentality quite often, ignoring or distracting myself from the goals i want to achieve throughout the day.

What can i do to avoid or reduce this from happening? Why would my mind resort to this? How do you guys remain focus throughout the days, weeks, months?:confused:

Hi, I think the main reason why we don't succeed in achieving our goals is because we subconsciously don't believe that we can achieve it. Sometimes positive affirmations are not enough, we need to do something to reprogram our mind.
I started using softwares which blinks affirmations on your computer screen so fast you can't even see it, but still your subconscious mind see it.
My life is much better since then, because I have more confidence to achieve any goal. And this is what we all need-more confidence that we actually can do it!
I would recommend you to start use subliminal softwares. Most of the will be expensive and not so user friendly. After long searching on Internet, I found this completely free and user friendly software: Subliminal Messages - Free Software | Mind of a Winner.

Simply because of fact that people make affirmations of what they want to achieve 1-2 hours a day(average). And the other 22 hours they think about all the problems and things they want to avoid.

However the key to making permanent changes in ones life, regardless of the area of life, whether it be slef-confidence, motivation, losing weight, or just believing in your own ability to be successful is getting that information firmly embedded into the SUBCONSCIOUS Mind.

Affirmations done at the conscious level rely mainly in will power and that is the less powerful part of your mind.

That said, the OP did mention that emotions are the key to making them work, and that is due to the fact that the emotions are a direct link to the subconscious mind.

It's been beaten into our heads since birth all the things we can NOT do ... So it takes something very powerful to change all those limited beliefs that hold you back.

Might I suggest putting yourself into a light trance before giving yourself the affirmations ? Just taking 10 minutes to relax the body and relax the mind ... Then the affirmations are going to a deeper place in your mind and will have a much better chance at working.

      Hi Hypwoman,
Outstanding addition to this already valuable post. I totally agree with you. Often, people will affirm consciously and "break even" because they internally reply with "When? or "How?".

For that reason I recommend writing your affirmations on 3X5 cards then blasting through them one by one and glancing at each one as fast as you can.

This allows your subconscious mind to record the information without your conscious mind having time to enter the debate.

Affirmations are powerful indeed! I finally decided to take control of my life about 3 years ago and the first thing I started with was affirmations. Although I've discovered countless other techniques and strategies, I continue to go back to affirmations when I feel negative emotions arising in me.

One thing that helps me incorporate them easily is to record my personal affirmations on audio and listen to them on my iPod. Also, I write them on notecards and place them around my room where I will be forced to look at them.

Affirmations are certainly not a short-term strategy for change; they take quite a while to take hold in your mind, especially if you are starting with a negative attitude. However, if you are persistent with using them, they will certainly change your life. Eventually, you won't need the affirmations anymore. Happiness and positivity will become your natural state.

@ bnorton2010 .. Recording your affirmations and listening to your own voice is very very powerful technique combined with the strategies I mentioned in my post.

Some great information here. Congratulations and well done for presenting this. I would also suggest that using affirmation and visualisation after using a suitable deep relaxation process or meditation will allow the affirmation to be placed deeply into your subconscious where it will work and bypass your critical conscious mind.

I'm in agreement! Using affirmations in combination with all mental states, will increase state-dependant memory, hence making the affirmation more effective and powerful. Meditation, in particular, would be a great one to combine with affirmations, as chrisrhea says, and also make sure to combine it with high-stress, high-activation situations.

I like to write my affirmations in my journal daily and read them out loud. Practicing visualizations helps keep me in a positive energy frequency, as well. Thank you for your added insights.

Thanks for sharing brute77 - very insightful info

Can see everyone pretty much agrees on this subject and I'm a strong believer too Positive thinking, daily affirmations, and even better yet, visualization techniques are all important tools if you want to improve your life.

As probably already mentioned, with daily affirmations it's very important to keep it in 'past tense' as if you've already reached a goal and also, try to imagine how it would FEEL like to have this goal. Will be much more powerful when bringing the LOA into work.

I personally believe that visualization techniques are even more efficient than affirmations, because the subconscious mind responds better to images, than to written words. Think about it, at night when you go to sleep and when the subconscious mind takes over, your dreams are full of images, not words... So as well as repeating daily affirmations, also remember to visualize yourself having reached your goals. And perhaps place some images of your desired goals on your PC desktop - and/ or get a board and place it somewhere in your home where you will see it every day.

Also, as brute77 mentions, it's important to speak out loud when doing your daily affirmations, again it's more powerful than just 'thinking' the affirmations. The tone of your voice will actually indicate how much you believe in achieving a particular goal. For instance, this may sound a bit silly, but a squeaky voice or a tightening in your throat or even coughing when saying you want for instance $1,000,000, it is basically your body signalling to you that you don't really believe in this goal i.e. subconsciously you're having a resistance to attracting this goal into your life. And this is where you need to pay special attention... When you have a goal, and you're coughing or feel sick to your stomach when saying out loud what you want, it happens because of a block in your subconscious mind.

The reason why a lot of people sabotage themselves when trying to reach their goals is because of hidden blocks. It's something I've been studying for a quite a while now. Years ago, I was very much into positive affirmations etc. and although, I had a positive result here and there, it didn't really make a life-transforming shift in my life that I was hoping for. I still ended up in the same life patterns over and over again. And I think a lot of people can relate to that...

So my point is, although, affirmations are very important, I don't think they are enough if you want to make a proper shift in your life. The subconscious mind controls more than 90% of your daily thoughts and activities, and although you're aware of this on a conscious level and perhaps trying to change your life with daily affirmations, you need to go deeper in order to turn your life around - and deal with these blocks in your subconscious mind.

      Hope this makes sense

It was a great post of affirmations and visualization! Thanks for summarizing it!

In case of affirmations I agree it is better to do it loudly and with moving, it worked better for me

After many years of using affirmations and studying the psychology of success, I have discovered that its not so much how we say affirmations - yes, we need to think and affirm the positive what we want - but the key is in how we handle the inner response we have to those affirmations.

Using Energy Psychology techniques used to be the way to go for me to handle those.

Now I use a quicker method that has roots in NLP. I've been using it with my clients who suffer from fear, worry, procrastination, overwhelm and even bright shiny object syndrome.

I teach them the technique to clear the negative, then I do an ecology check to make sure no parts of them object to their goals, then I future pace their actions for today or this week to get their goals activated in real time.

So far its working nicely. After about 20 calls they are all moving forward and no one has come back with a problem (or refund request).

So... the key is not just the intention of the positive affirmation, but checking in with your inner self to see if any part of you objects to it. Look for it, don't just hope or hide from the negative beliefs that might be lurking. Address those negative or limiting beliefs directly!

Reframing, like the 6 Step Reframe in NLP is another ay of addressing these unconscious parts.

Using EFT (Energy Tapping) also produces good results for these. In Energy talk these negative objections are called "psychological reversals" and they are quite easy to remove. Learning techniques like these are fairly easy to learn and that's what they are best at - not just stating the positive - but going after the negative parts of you that object or are stuck in fear, etc.

I hope that helped some and added to the conversation!

Affirmations are very rarely successful except for handful or people. If the subconscious is not in alignment with the conscious mind you can say affirmations forever.
Also affirmations when they are used have to be done in a state of high-energy.
I believe the best way to change anything is through systems that get right down to the unconscious mind and change the programming.
