Strange Exercise To Boost Your Confidence

I was reading the book Change (by Watzlawick, Weakland & Fisch) and came across a story describing how Watzlawick helped a student who had been unable to complete his thesis due to anxiety. He told the student "Go into three shops over the next week & make an absurd request." The student did so, reported a shift in attitude, & finished their thesis shortly thereafter.

The next day, I went to a McDonald store and my heart was beating like crazy when I was waiting in the line. Finally it is my turn, I took a deep breath and I said:

"Hi, can I have a Italian Sausage Spaghetti?"

" What the....Excuse me, what do you want again?" said the cashier

"Italian Sausage Spaghetti, please."

"But we don't sell Italian Sausage Spaghetti here."

"Is this not a Italian restaurant?"

"No...."

"Sorry then."

By the time I walked out the store, I felt that I was invincible and I can do anything. This is totally cool. You must try it.

This exercise is similar to some of the exercises mentioned in "The Four Hour Work Week", in particular the exercise that helps the reader to overcome the fear of negotiating. In other words, feel the fear and do it anyway! These techniques can work, but they have a tendency to unnecessarily increase anxiety, stress, etc.

However, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), provides two highly effective confidence boosting techniques that work like ghost busters without torturing yourself.

    2. New Behavior Generator

Both exercise details are easily available just Google them. And if you need any help with the exercises, just send a reply and gladly work with you over Skype - for FREE and there's no need to opt-in to anything :-)

Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to read your ebook. I hope I'll have the courage to do something like the spaghetti thing; I'm sure that was a mindset changer.

I think this exercise is to help you face fear in the face, and lets you realize that it isn't as scary as you thought it was gonna be.

It is even more hilarious if you try it out yourself You should look at the face of the person behind you. lol

    AngieDixon,

    xav13r,
Great point! More than face fear in his face, but to laugh at his face.

Here is the excerpt of the preface of my e-book, which summarize my view about confidence. Feel free tell me about yours, maybe from the internet marketer's view.

    "I need more confidence."

This is the meat and potato question every life coach such as myself have to solve everyday. Everyday there are bound to be at least 1 guy complaining the same old problem to me. This could be a real pain in the ass for this guy to have low self-confidence, to scare the **** out of himself when delivering a speech on stage, or simply turn into stone when approaching the opposite sex.

But if you were me, listening to the same thing over and over again for 2 years, you begin to see a pattern: this is simply BS. I don't care if he is REALLY suffering from the lack of confidence severely, his ATTITUDE is dead wrong! And this is the key to his problem.

"You need more confidence. Sure. You can go down there to the McDonald. They are selling "Confidence Combo Meal" for $9.90 including chips and drinks. It contains 1.5g of self-confidence and 2.0g of self-esteem, more than enough for your recommended daily consumption."

I am not being a smart ass here making fun of other people's serious problems.(OK. A little bit) The point is, "confidence" is not a THING that you can ask someone to give you, to buy from someone, or can be mailed to your house by FedEx. And you certainly don't expect me to serve you your confidence in a silver plate when you come to my office and pay me to solve your confidence problem. Confidence is to be earned. I will talk more about this later but all I can do is to show you the path, and you are the only one that can walk it.
