Does Money Buy Happiness?

You know the older I get, the more that I believe that to be true...."Money doesn't buy you happiness."

Although money lets you rent happiness for a while. Short term as that may be..in the long term..money won't make you happy.

I used to hear this saying all the time when I was a kid growing up in my middle-class household. My mom and dad would tell me that...and I would just shrug it off saying...."yeah whatever."

However, as I've reached adulthood and have known many millionaires and multimillionaires...both from many different backgrounds....about the only thing in common that all of them had...yep you guest it...they were all pretty miserable. Even thinking about them now...I can honestly say that the money they had made things worse.

They had a different kind of money problem...in that they were worried about who was trying to sue them....what family member was trying to mooch from them...and how many friends were hitting them up for a loan.

On the flip side, I've met many more individuals who couldn't rub 2 nickels together....and they were so happy it would make you sick.

What are your thoughts?

Studies have revealed that money does not buy happiness; however, it does buy comfortability which can be considered a form of happiness up to a certain point.

I agree with this - it seems like money can make you happy up to a certain point. I.E. if I were broke, homeless, and unable to afford food or clothing, I'd be pretty unhappy. But, if I can now buy those things and meet my basic physical needs, I'm a little happier.

There's definitely some end point. If I had $1 million, I don't think I'd be twice as happy with $2 million. As long as I have what I need to meet my basic needs and some left over at the end of the month, that's all that's needed.

It's definitely short-term, not long-term, in most cases.

Unfortunately, we have to spend a ton of time pursuing it to make or basic needs in this day and age

I totally agree! Most of the people would say that money can't buy happiness...it is priceless. But having a comfortable living is one factor that makes a person happy. And if you want to have a comfortable life, then you have to have money for you to achieve it.

The question is does Money buy happiness. If you need money for anything then the answer is yes. You answered the question beautifully. The man that lives in the cave who says he don't need money and living off the land is actually living off of others who go to work bring home food which he digs out the garbage to eat. Somebodies money making him happy.

This reminds me of the 1st or second episode of the new 2 and 1/2 men. When a couple came to see charlie sheens mansion (since he died) to see if they were going to buy it. The husband said, "this house is a bit too expensive". The wife replied, "oh honey the universe will take care of it". The husband then rebutts, " the universe aint paying for this house I am". LOL.

Naysayers: Don't give me that BULL*^%# that money don't buy happiness. Give me yours and I will surely show you what happiness is.

Actually, it may be better to reframe this. It is not so much that money can buy happiness, but more that not having money takes away from happiness. The research you mention suggests that around $40,000 is a cutoff point. Having more than that doesn't add happiness, but having less decreases happiness.

I've heard of these studies myself but I keep having trouble finding the links. I think maybe we should put them here for the benefit of everyone reading this thread.

I for one wouldn't mind sending that research to a lot of my friends who think it's nice showing off how much money you have and thinking how being a cheap-skate makes for a restrictive lifestyle.

Money doesn't buy happiness. We want money because we imagine the things we could do with it, the problems we could solve, the comfort we can create, but once money starts rolling we get distracted and lose touch with our original purpose. At least that's what I think.

However, I know many millionaires and 1 billionaire and they are happy.

There are happy rich people, middle class people and poor people.

There are also unhappy rich, middle class and poor people.

I agree. Money is just a tool. It is not an end, but a means to create a better quality of life. While money may not be the most important thing in the world, it does affect the things that are most important to you. The lack of money affects one's health, relationships, security and well-being.

Money is my inspiration. There are many things that I dream about having and that just doesn't include "love" per say. I enjoy having a nice expensive meal sometimes without wondering if my bank account will be in the red the next day. Sometimes, I like to get my hair nicely cut without stressing out about how am I going to afford tipping the hair stylist without my bank account going in the red. No, money will not buy me happiness but it allows me to have simple pleasures in life that not only relaxes me but also makes me feel good. However, if you feel bad having money then donate it to charity Either way - it can make you feel good that you had the money to do it.

I'll say what my dad says: money isn't everything but it is important. If you do not have money to buy your 10 year old son some ice-cream definately won't fill you with happiness. However if you are rich and you fail to put in time with family, then you shall be miserable in your deathbed when you look around and see nobody there to 'see you off'. It depends on what you use money for.

I read somewhere it's what you spend it on that matters.

If you have $10,000 and you spend it on a TV and a garden sculpture to impress your neighbors, you're probably not going to be much happier from that in six months than if you had kept your old TV and had no statue.

If you have $10,000 and you spend it on a trip to Florida to hang out with your grandpa before he dies, six months later, you'll be very happy you spent that bit.

Whether you have lots of money, and no money, they have their own problems.

Having money can buy you things that you want on top of what you already need. You do not have to worry about where your next meal is going to come, your bills due tomorrow, etc.

However, having lots of money can change one's character completely. I've seen enough stories of family broken up because of money, family lawsuits of who gets the inheritance, etc. Are all these necessary? It is very sad if things have to turn out this way.

Happiness is a choice. A famous fellow once said, "Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." - I'm sure it was Abe Lincoln Thus, being happy is quite up to you.

Money, on the other hand, is just a tool. You can do lot's with it... or not. It can bring your best... or your worst. But whatever it brings out, was already within you.

x2. I don't buy the "money can't buy happiness" line. It's a partial truth. It buys freedom and the ability to make ends meet. When you have neither of those 2 things it is very difficult to be happy.

I think in some way money can buy you happiness. For example your family needs are fulfilled and you don't need to worry about paying bills, etc. I don't think that your family would be very happy if day to day you must think about how to pay for car and house, how to pay for kids needs and so on. What about vacations and running away from routine for few days... Money can give you that you cannot afford when you do not have them. And it is very important.

In other hand, yes, money cannot buy you good relationship with your family, or money cannot buy you physic income, but it depends from us, we can improve this.

I think that people can combine material and physic happiness and people who say that that people who are rich are very unhappy, I think they are fool and do not like their life. They never make their dreams come true. That's sad and you would be amazed how many people are depressed because of routine and life's monotony.

To sum up, try to have money and improve at your physic income, combine them and your life will be very beatiful.

Not the real Michael Milken..right? I loved your story back in the 80's with the junk bonds bro....a true real-life Gordon Gecko...

Yeah I agree with you on the "money is the root of all evil" being spoken usually by broke people. Or "do you think money grows on trees"....quote too. These are usually said by people that have the scarcity mindset and will always be broke.

And yeah love and happiness can't pay the bills....but my point in the thread was not really....having zero money to pay bills....but rather having alot of money...or more than enough to pay your bills....the excess of too much money often leads those that have it to ponder....ruminate...on what it is exactly that will make them "happy".

Which is why you see billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet giving all their fortunes away to charity....and convincing other billionaires like FB founder Zuckerburg to follow in their footsteps.

It reminds me of the movie "Citizen Cane" when Orson talks about how "I could've been someone if I hadn't inherited all this money." In other words, his character wasn't happy at all from having a ton of dough. So on his death bed....he utters "Rosebud" which is the name of his snow sled that he remembered made him the most happiest of his life...when he was a kid before all the money entered his life.

I have to agree with the PPs who said that money doesn't necessarily buy happiness but it sure helps.

Having money means not worrying about where your next meal comes from, how long you can keep the roof over your head, etc. Not stressing about having enough to survive surely leaves a personal happier in general.

If you are lucky enough to have lots of money (more than you need to take care of basics), then you have even more freedom to find happiness. Maybe this means you can afford to take a trip to learn about new cultures, take time away from working to spend more time with a new baby (bliss), or explore new hobbies or career options.

On the flip side, I have seen people with a lot of money that are unhappy. But this is usually not because of the money. These are the type of people that are never satisfied, no matter how much they have. Usually because they are always comparing themselves to others - never winning because there will always be someone richer than they are (with a newer car, bigger house, better suit, whatever).

Tying in with a lot of people's comments about this, money can do these things:

    1. Make you happy
    2. Make you miserable
    3. Make you a target to smooch off of
    4. Lessen your worries about the future (for the most part)
    5. Allow you to spend time with your loved one and children (if you have this option)

It really just depends. For me and myself only, I guesstimate that 30k per year is more than enough to fulfill my monetary needs (any future rent, bills, food, insurance possibly if I need anymore, etc.), so yes, it would vary by individuals. I believe it depends on how you value money and how you use it for your future.

Of course it can.. It will allow you the freedom to do what you want. But be careful what you wish for... Having a large sum thrust upon you with no hard work to get it will usually turn out for the worst... But if you work for it, I believe it can.

In one sense this saying is as silly as would be "your computer doesn't love you, you know". Your laptop is not meant to be the source of love, it's a tool you can use.

But, on the other hand, what people usually search for when passionately wishing to become rich is happiness. This is of course a completely stupid thing to do, since the source of happiness is inside, it is dependent on your own thoughts and feelings. The ONLY thing that can bought in this matter is a book or a coatching program that would lead the person to have the right thoughts so that by these thoughts and feelings he could turn himself to that perfect frequency - already there, all the time, as a radio station - where he is happy.

Of course, it's quite natural that people think happiness can be bought with that new car or a bigger house - ads around us continuously shout this on all of us. They think if they have those things they will be approved (loved) more. But they will not be, usually envy creates just the opposite (an advise: rent a luxury sports car for a day and you'll see how mean those people around you in the traffic become, especially in poorer neighbourhoods). They think they will be more secure but all of a sudden, when they do become rich, they need better security systems for their house and cars; they need to more watch out for their kids not to become victims of a kidnapping; they may feel the need to take a shooting course etc. Disapproval, insecurity and being out of control remained even with having the money - that is if nothing is changed inside. In fact, as money is an amplifier, those problems may actually even grow bigger.

The positive side of this is that you may be happy even with those added tensions, added responsibilities - if you are on the right frequency inside. But you can tune into it regardless of being rich or not.

I remember reading a book years back that discussed how a lady doctor was visiting a small village in a developing country. Most lived in small shacks and had no running water. No real jobs in the area and the village had to work together to grow food and scrape together provisions any way they could. When not finding food, they spent most of their days sitting in chairs, talking and watching their children play. But, they all seemed extremely happy.

The doctor was talking to several women and expressed her sympathy about how bad their living conditions were and that she was impressed with how they kept their spirits up despite.

The women looked perplexed and said that it was they who felt sorry for her. The doctor was confused and asked why. They said..."well, you and the West spend all of your time working and no real time with your family or friends. You get up and leave your kids with babysitters. You miss most of their childhoods. We get to spend our whole day with our children and all of our friends and family. Every day we create memories and we live. We wouldn't trade that for all of the money in the world."

Now I'm not saying that I could just sit there and be happy, but it does underscore the point that it depend on your perspective and what true happiness means to you.

Money is not the determining factor in happiness. Although a lack of money is a heavy contributor to unhappiness.

One thing that a lot of people from middle or lower class incomes do not easily grasp is the fact that money can buy time. Once you are able to start buying time, life takes on entirely new dimensions.

For me, yes it does. Though money is not the ONLY source of happiness. Money frees us from any financial worries and burdens. So, whether we like it or not, money can make a person happy in one point or another.

Isn't it something like "dentists make me happy"? If you have a big toothache for a day or two (and no painkillers), and you then go to your dentist, and the pain goes away, for a while you must be the happiest person, right? But you see, for such happiness, the first requirement is the problem. If one day you would have no more money problems (which in the process of going away makes you happy), there would be no happiness any more.

Money may not buy happiness, but it doesn't really have to.

According to some psychologist, there are 6 basic needs:

    1. Certainty/Comfort
    2. Variety
    3. Significance
    4. Connection/Love
    5. Growth
    6. Contribution

Having one or more of those needs met is what makes us happy; money can help us meet those needs.

    Thanks for the post…
Here are my observations about money:
    1. You can be happy with or without money…
    2. Money is a byproduct of doing something for humanity. Providing a service, product or solving a problem for people. It is the process that needs to make you happy not the bank balance...
    3. If you acquire money in the right way( that is according to little 1910 booklet Science of Getting Rich ) you cannot fail to be happy.
    4. Most of the populace hates rich people; they are jealousy of them. Therefore the moment you are rich, you will have very few true friends. In fact, most people will consider you greedy, insensitive, aloof or untrustworthy.
    5. Money gives you choices and comforts in life.

Overall, I would rather be RICH and unhappy than be a poor but happy.

Money doesn't buy happiness, but it can help you pursue those things that help to make one happy. It allows one to participate in hobbies one enjoys. More money allows one to serve more people and serving others is a key to happiness I believe.

Bottom line, it's a tool that can be used to help create happiness, but it isn't the source of one's happiness. That comes from inside and ones view of what the money is and what it represents, as well as how one chooses to use the money.

I too know many millionaires, and a billionaire that are happy. One of them told me, "Money doesn't buy happiness. But it doesn't hurt. I've been happy poor and I've been happy rich. I'd much rather be happy rich."

I value this conversation because I value awareness, choice and responsibility.

I appreciate the clarity in which you have presented your points, abugah.

I want to stress your first and fifth points:
"1. You can be happy with or without money..."
"5. Money gives you choices and comforts in life."

I myself have experienced being happy when not having money or owning really anything. And I have experienced having money and not being happy.

Money, as a form of energy and means of trade, can allow us to meet our needs in easeful ways and provide us comfort.

Though comfort doesn't necessarily provide us with the circumstances that bring about our greatest potential as they may hinder us from challenges and hardships that we would otherwise experience.

And, saying all of this... Gimme the money!

As I value having the freedom and ease of choice to meet people I admire, even though they live in different parts of the world, or to help out a friend in need, to support a charity I believe in and to live a healthy lifestyle, being able to have my basic needs met easily, to use money for my own and other people benefit and realization of purpose.

If happiness for one involves things that only money can buy, then yes money buys happiness for THEM.

Some people are content living, even happy living in a lower middle class setting because the things they enjoy and the things that make them happy do not involve money.

It honestly depends on your outlook, many people both rich and poor find happiness in Jesus Christ or whatever religion they subscribe to and are happy even though they are poor because of their outlook.

But no one can say money does not buy happiness or that it always does.

Money can help you achieve peace of mind. That's very close to contentment which, in my opinon, is one brand of happiness. If you don't have a certain amount of money, you will be miserable. Without any money at all, you aren't going to survive unless the government takes care of you. To look at it from the other direction, you can't be happy unless you have at least enough money to survive.

Physical money doesn't buy happiness it's what you do with the money that can bring you happiness. If you go and spend that money wisely and live on a nice beach with no debt worries in the world then of course you will be happy especially if you compare it to what you had.

You need to also first appreciate the money you made before you become happy, it's a stepping block, that's why few over night successor's are not totally satisfied because to them it's like gambling, they are always hungry for more and more, so this kind of mentality will always never be happy.

I'ts almost like a drug addiction they need an extra fix, they need an extra level of cash so they are constantly never happy cause they are playing a game with their minds to be bigger and bigger with no end.

You need to take a deep breath and learn how to be happy without this addiction and craziness, with enjoying every possible moment even if its a slow and steady road or even at times a painful process.

Once you accept that life is not easy then you be ok with this game, that's why the old saying goes the bigger you are the harder you fall, try to remember slow and steady wins the race. I don't mean you need to be totally slow but consistency is the key.

Build a consistent profitable business and you will be happy knowing tomorrow when you wake up you don't have people chasing you for money or the police knocking on your door. That's the key my friends.

Be true to yourself and to others and making money and endless streams of it will be the most enjoyable feeling you have ever had.

The happiness depends on small things in life that we share with others, like with our family members and friends. It is easier to be unhappy when you have money than when you don't. There is a minimum level of subsistence that we need to alleviate poverty and it's natural to want to establish a level of comfort so we don't have to worry about access to good health, education.

    The is a complex question...

Money does BUY happiness to a large extent....it depends on how you obtained your money and how much you actually have of it. There are always going to be sharks, but, if you got the means, you can circumvent, and, reverse the situation on those who try and cross you. It is a chess match and you need the right team to play to the hilt.
If you need help with your psych to deal with handling money you can hire someone to help you in your counsel...if you can't deal with it then maybe being rich isn't for you. Much like being a champion athlete isn't for all players(hence: the "clutch gene").

You are right Tyler. Money DOES NOT buy happiness, it's simply a different thing.

Happiness is an emotion. Money is also an emotion. Both are different types of emotions. You cannot replace one with another. You do not need to have money to be happy, all you have to do is just to REMEMBER to be happy.

Money is important, but happiness brings a MEANING to what's important in life.

Interesting... If you look at a typical marriage the lack of money is one of the major stressors that leads often to a divorce. It's not the lack of money directly but it's the fights it causes.

I guess a person can be really happy without money (totally broke) in current society only if they are born with a good happiness gene :-)

Money is nothing more or less than a tool for social leverage.

And like all tools for social leverage, its use is up to the person wielding it. It CAN buy happiness, as sure as status, charisma, reputation, and any other tool can.

Most people, alas, do not use their tools in pursuit of this particular end. Why not is one of the great mysteries of the human condition.

Money alone isn't gonna make you a happy person. If you're a grinch without money then being rich will probably only make you worse. It won't buy you a family, a home, a love of life.... but it can give you an awesome spontaneous trip to the Bahamas(true story).

On the flip side, money can change people. It's sad but true, and if you're weak enough it almost definitely will. In an interview with Walter Isaacson Steve Jobs said he lived modestly because he saw how money changed people. After Apple's IPO he saw friends suddenly talk only about money, buy big homes they didn't even necessarily want and have their wives get plastic surgery. Who wants that for themselves?

On the flip side, I've met many more individuals who couldn't rub 2 nickels together....and they were so happy it would make you sick.

    What are your thoughts?
I think you may have hit the nail on the head here in the sense that, happiness itself is a choice. Money can make you happier in a superficial way(more toys and vacations and status) but real happiness comes from having a purpose, sticking to your values, having close companions to share your experiences with....

I think that if you spend money on what you love, and not what on what you think will make others love you, you will be going in the right direction.

(PS: Studies show that technically money does buy happiness to a certain extent. Everyone is happier than poor people, but the rich aren't that much happier in general than middle-class people. Tell that to Richard Branson though, lol.)

(PSS: Giving will make you happy )

May I paint a picture for you?

Before you wake up there is a door bell ring. A butler answers the door and lets someone in. This mystery person walks up the stairs where you are and there is a knock on the bedroom door. This person rushes in and yells at you to get up, you got 20 minutes! This mystery person is Cindy Crawford waking you up for your morning yoga. Cindy waits for you to get up and get ready. She has a stop watch and a regular watch looking at them both while your in the bathroom washing your face putting on your clothes.

Once you step out the bathroom breakfast is by your bed. You eat a hearty breakfast with Cindy...your food digest a bit then you and Cindy starts yoga....

Once yoga is done your second mystery guest comes in...it's, it's, Robert Huizenga, M.D., along with Jillian Michaels to set you up on your weight training regimen....

Spontaneously you start thinking about what you would like for dinner and the restuarant of your choosing is in Spain. You will be going to spain for dinner, so, you will need to have your assistant (former runner up in miss america pageant) to make arrangements to get a private jet today!

Once plans are made and you are at this five star restuarant you realize they don't have freshly squeezed orange juice, but, no worries. You have a second assistant whose sole job is to carry fresh fruit in a large heavy bag, along, with a hand made juicer,( in case you cannot be accommodated at your every whim). This assistant starts juicing at the table while you are waiting on your meal.

    Money is the sweetest hangover...

The more you have the more you control your world and many things in it....no need to plan for stuff. You can just do it!!!!!!

The best kind of "happiness" you can expect to get with money
is a temporary, crude, inferior knockoff!

Happiness is not a commodity that can be purchased in the marketplace.
It does not require external circumstances or things to make it happen.
True happiness is an attitude that is sparked from within simply by intending it!

Money doesn't intrinsically bring happiness: what you do with it may.

I would love to be able to purchase all the photography and take all of the vacations I want. Now, photography is very expensive if you want hordes of pro level equipment and vacations can be as cheap or expensive as you want. I don't need to be wealthy for either, but I do need to be at a certain level of "rich" (how ever one wants to define "rich" and "wealthy" -- I like Chris Rock's definition, for what it's worth).

That said, I'm an achiever. I'm also obsessive. I usually don't even care about competing. I just want to keep doing better and better myself. If I made $100 today, why can't it be $150? If it's $150, then why not $200 and so forth. That can lead to lots of money through effort and persistence. At some point it's not even about what one can do with the money, but not much higher the nominal amount can become.

Money can't buy, but can rent happiness. I think you nailed it perfectly!

I think there's just more to life than material aspects in life..

Money is still a necessity though. It's a mere survival tool for ourselves today, can't deny that. Happiness? It's up to the individual.

Money is always a problem. If there's anyone who told you that money is ain't a problem - they're probably bull-crapping you.

    1) Problem of having too much money:
-Always have to find a place to secure or hide your money (as we all know banks is no longer secured)
    - Raise spoiled brats
    - Not sure if your friends are authentic and genuine or just want your cash
    - And many more

    2) Problems of NOT having enough money
    - Stress, have to go back to work everyday
    - Can't buy your favourite toys, cars, houses - stress again
    - No money and time to go for on a holiday - stress again
    - And many more

scientific has proven that the people who falls under the category of having too MUCH money are generally HAPPIER than people who doesn't have NOT enough money.

Which money problems do you want? Your choice - all i know is Internet Marketing can bring you both problems

    God Bless,

    Interesting Thread....

I assume that Tony Robbins hit the nail on the the head with this one.

If I can recall, it depends on an individual's blueprint. If someone believes money = happiness it can make someone happy; however, will money + happiness = longevity happiness? That is another question. Basically, you change your blueprint or change the "money" goal in order to obtain happiness. Usually, the problem is people change the amount of money they want so much, until they never get to experience the "so called happiness it buys." Example: "I earned 5 Million now I want 10 Million.... on and on....." It is like a dog chasing its tail.

    Again, good thread.

Money doesn't buy happiness. It can help, yes, especially if you are too poor to afford necessities for you and your children.
But, for the most part it doesn't buy happiness. And this can be seen from so many poor, or at least not rich, people all over who are happy and content with their lives.
If you are happy with what you have and remember to give thanks to God and just appreciate everything, then you don't need a lot of money to be happy

Money can buy you freedom, which usually leads to happiness. It's possible, but much more difficult to be happy when you are not able to do what you want, live your dream, and follow your passions. I think we are all put on this earth to fulfill a purpose and it you are slaving away for a living and don't have time to be with your family and do what you love, then that is hard to fulfill that purpose because you are so busy just surviving.

This is a very philosophical question! i definitely think that money can buy happiness, but only up to a certain point. It also depends on how you manage your money...and there's a difference between a high-income producing and high net-worth person, although one can be both. Money magnifies the traits of a person..it makes a generous person more generous, and it makes a miser more miserly.

Absolutely not. Money is just like any other resource. It can provide for your basic needs. It can give you something to satisfy you. However, how long or significant that satisfaction can be will always, always, depend on you as a person.

Though from my more personal perspective, I find life easier when I make myself be more content with my lot. You can chalk that up to me having friends who like to present themselves as wealthy (and at times, very haughtily) but when you look at their lives and how spoiled their behavior can be... it makes me wonder if getting all that money is really worth it.

Yep I agree, the happiness only lasts for so long. A lot of millionaires I know are quite bored with their life and seem to have no interests compared to middle class people. Being able to buy whatever you want doesn't make it as fun, and a lot of them sacrificed their social life's, families, etc so now they're stuck by themselves. Wealth isn't that great tbh.

The specific research refers to a Gallup study directed by Daniel Kahneman. Here is one reference:

Behavioral Finance’s Kahneman: Happiness costs $75,000 « Portfolio Investing Blog: Portfolioist

There they refer to $75,000 household income, which is why I used $40K, giving a somewhat high estimate of per capita income. Kahneman states that after the $75K amount life satisfaction "flat lines." There is little or no additional "happiness" with additional $'s.

I have not been able to find references to the original data, but haven't tried that hard. The main point is pretty clear.

Actually, happiness research, from what I can tell hasn't been done that well, because it has focused on "features" rather than "systems." The most enduring happiness comes from living in and belonging to a community where self-interest and community interest are the same. The happiness research doesn't seem to measure that very well.

Well that's something I haven't heard of but I think I know where you're getting at.
Then again, a lot would argue that the very nature of the term 'happiness' would make any sort of quantifying research highly difficult.

It's pretty clear that money (or even material possessions as a whole) aren't always the end-all to it.

IMHO having the security of financial freedom only helps to illuminate the type of person you truly are. Having unlimited restrictions with money, and what the money can be used for, merely reflects the person you truly are. If you were a miserable selfish SOB before you obtain wealth and power, you are likely to be a miserable selfish SOB who has wealth, and abuses power. Contrary, if you are a good nature person, having wealth and power will only allow you to express these qualities even more and for more people.

So, no money does not buy happiness. Money only allows you to express your true nature on even greater levels!!

Working with passion and developing some business of my own and products that brings me real happiness the money are just a bonus for a job well done.

The bad side is that a lot of people now a days ''go crazy'' when they make money /especially if the money didn't come with hard work and years of sacrifices just to make it/ That's why they are miserable when they become rich, become the spiritual and the material are not on the same level in there life and they feel empty inside, That's why not everyone is prepared to become rich /they may say that there ready but in reality there not/

And also I think the other reason some rich people are unhappy is because some of them don't do business because that's their passion they do it because there only after the money, and one's you get it you realise that your empty inside and surrounded by useless material junk.
That's why every time I go in business I don't go after the money I go after my happiness and my passion to do the thing I do and you will become successful every time.

Its big question Why some people even wonder whether money can generate happiness?
As we know that Money provides comfort and opportunities.
With money we can improve other people's lives, which can bring sense of joy.
Money should be used as a tool in making life around us better.
But Its big question around us wheather it can buy happiness, relief or peace of mind?
We might therefore be better off not connecting material wealth with happiness, just as we don't equate food, oxygen with that word.

What is money? Answers of this questions is money means power, control, security, comfort, happiness, satisfaction, enrichment, etc. In reality, money itself is a means of exchange, and nothing more!

With the help of money most of us have televisions, radios, cars, and other modern conveniences so that we can live a comfortable life style.

"Riches, feeling of enrichment, being rich, rich people; abundance, having an abundance of money!"

According to this definition, we can see that wealth depends upon the money; however, it also makes reference to abundance and enrichment.

Money does not equal happiness!. Happiness is the experience or moments you create for yourself, whether you actually use money or not. Happiness is not a destination; it is an ongoing journey, which sometimes, but not always, requires money!

Does money buy happiness, or does happiness come indirectly from the higher rank in society that money brings? When God died, GDP took over and economists became the new high priests. I normally disagree with statements like this but you do have a point somewhere when you read about how countries like Japan have a high suicide rate. Singapore too. I was there for a vacation with some of my family and one of my aunt's friends told us the situation was similar.

It's all about perspective and current situations in life, in my opinion. I think it can buy happiness or at least help elevate stress when it comes to financial problems. Stress alone can cause all types of negative things that can damage someone's health (emotionally and physically) without having money. What if you don't have enough money to pay debts or to live without starving? I've been there and it's not a happy place to be. I think having money helps in that regard so you don't have financial worries. A life without any financial debts would make me very happy.

If you didn't need money to survive or money didn't have so much impact on having things that you need and want, then it wouldn't be a question that money doesn't buy happiness.

The question on whether money does buy happiness lies in each and every person. Money can be considered as a tool for happiness. Money per se is not happiness but there are people scattered all over the world that uses money to make them happy. Let us say for instance you are the type of person that hasn't experienced traveling all over the world but it has been your dream to do so when you were young.

The reason for not being able to do so in the past could be attributed to lack of money and now that you have the money, you always look forward to your next international travel to learn different cultures worldwide.

Again, money can serve as a tool to reach the happiness that you envision in your life and there is nothing better than having more than enough for yourself. We live only once in this world so we might as well enjoy what we have.

I read two different topics on money and happiness. One said that people are happy based on who their friends are. The other article said those with $1.75 million in investible assets started to feel rich.

First, I suppose if you have the best of friends that seriously support your likes and you love your life, then for you, money is not as important. I don't have those kind of friends, so, that scenario wont work for me.

Secondly, $1.75 mill would make me feel piss poor. 4% of that is somewhere around $80,000 a year.

Money and lots of it is the most important factor in making us feel content. On the otherhand it is true that that happiness levels correlate with the amount of wealth a person accumulates. And, in contrast to popular belief, it does not level off when the assets reach a certain threshold.
The real measure of your wealth is how much you'd be worth if you lost all your money. The holy passion of friendship is so sweet and steady and loyal and enduring in nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked to lend money

Ok, it's a nice joke, however from my 21 years of life I discovered that hapiness is a state of spirit that money can't purchase. But imagine if you'll be happy with a stressfull job and earning not enough to pay your bills or having to take a bus everyday to get in you job. I would never be a happy guy in this situation.

Money can contribute to make us happier, however you'll have to maintain a balanced life, if you become rich and the most important you should NEVER forget the simple things in life.

Yep same here. I know many multi millionaires most are unhappy. The few I know and have anything to do with, use their riches to make other people happy, which in turn make them happy. In fact they used to have a program on TV about it. Money is a tool use it like one.

Money can't buy happiness, but happiness doesn't pay the bills.

We all know that having money doesn't equal happiness. However the mistake we make is thinking that money doesn't help with happiness.

I once read a book from a rich guy. He said he had been 'poor and happy', 'poor and unhappy', 'rich and unhappy' as well as 'rich and happy'.

He said that having money always made things better (so if he was unhappy, he would rather be of the rich kind).

That is how I view it.

We shouldn't disown the idea of being rich just because we think the money itself is going to make us unhappy.

tyler has a good point in that I also know that many many of the richest people seem to be the most unhappy. I have yet to piece together exactly why that is but I think you touched on a few that strike home. They wanted the money all along and now that that have it they are terrified of someone taking it from them. (suing, mooching, loaning) as you put it.

money doesn't buy happiness. Think about the best days of your life, I guarantee you were sharing them with someone special. Without that person in your life it wouldn't have been the same. Now that said, money can let you do awesome stuff with said people.

food for thought: if money can't buy happiness, why have you ever seen anyone frown on a wave runner?...

Think about what money really is. It is energy- and we have created mediums that enable us to exchange this energy- in whatever form we have manifested it, and we use symbols (dollars, etc.) to represent and accomplish this.

It's more about right use of this energy exchange that we call money, which determines whether or not we will be happy.

The old saying "money is the root of all evil" is a mis-quote from the bible. What it really says in the bible is, "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil". And in context, what they are referring to is a distortion or misuse of this energy.

Think misers that horde, don't share, and deprive themselves and others of the good that can come from money.
Think the abuse of power that can come with the misuse of large sums of money, etc.

Money itself is neutral. It's how we view it, and what we do with it, that matters.

Nope money can't buy happiness, but it can help you achieve the things that truly result in happiness.

Family, friends, relationships, health, satisfaction, and freedom are what make you happy.

Money is simply a way to allow me to do what I want when I want. IT also makes sure I can take care of my family if anything bad happens. Thats whats truly important. Money in itself is just tree bark.

What is happiness? What is money? Simple questions, but it's vital to understand the answers. I've been very comfortable before, yet I was miserable inside. I had money. I was working in a Bank, driving a BMW, had a lovely wardrobe...but I felt like I was in the wrong place...and my spirit was famished. I was not happy. Being poor would not make you happy. Being rich would not.

Only yesterday, I was conversing with a guy who seem to have it all. And he was not happy because he found it difficult to find/know true love! For me, it's vital to separate pleasures/sensations based on external stimuli, from an almost ineffable, yet real perception of inexplicable joy that comes from doing ''what is right.''

According to a Marist poll released Tuesday, most Americans from households that make less than $50,000 a year are "not very happy," and they fear becoming a burden to loved ones. However, those who come from households that earn more than $50,000 annually reported a far greater level of happiness.

As far as some people being super happy even though they can't rub two nickels together.. I believe that's possible, but highly unlikely, if it is in an industrialized country which requires a certain cost of living to survive. If needs are being met I believe happiness and health can be met. Wealth definitely goes beyond monetary value.

Helping and giving things to people is what makes me happy. To do this though, you sometimes need a little startup capital.

The more money I have, the more I can give.

Therefore, money makes me happy. But only indirectly.

Money can buy happiness short term. If you have to work hard and your body says stop, I can't keep going like this, you really wish you won the lottery to get you out of the hole, especially if your loved one was working along side you.

Money is merely a tool, and it is amoral, it is a tool for amplification. Whatever you are without money, you will be ever so much more of that with money. If you are a person that thinks the world is out to get them and you suddenly come into a large sum of money, you will most likely become a recluse, continually in fear that your friends and family are trying to take the money from you. If you are a person who has always felt oppressed and you come into money (i.e. the balance of power shifts in your favor), you will become the oppressor and cause as much suffering as you can.

On the other hand, if you are a giving human being, who is loving and is loved by all, you will become even more generous. If you are kind-hearted, you will become more so.

The Bible says "One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want." (Proverbs 11:24). It really doesn't matter whether you believe the Bible or not, because you can see the truth of this illustrated all around you. The OP talked about the millionaires and multimillionaires that he has known who are always miserable, I would bet that if you looked at their personal lives, they are very greedy people who do not give what they should.

The reason that many people who do not have two nickles to rub together are so happy is that they are often the most generous people that you will ever meet. They give freely of what they have and they grow all the richer, perhaps not in material possessions, but they are happier than most people who have all the material possessions that most of us could ever imagine.

'Rich' people are miserable because they are not generous, 'poor' people are happy because they are generous; money doesn't make one happy or miserable, rather it amplifies the emotions that are already present in an individual.

Money probably does not buy happiness. However money lets me live in a good neighborhood with low crime, and lets me send my kids to a good school. It lets me provide a nice place for my family to live and spend weekends on our boat on a large lake. Providing this for my family makes me happy. That being said, I can absolutely
say money is also the source of my greatest stress. Just my two cents.

Money gives you more options more probability of obtaining happiness through having less stress as to where the next dollar is coming from to pay the rent. I would rather have the stress of having money than the stress of having none.

I know many have said that happiness comes from within and that is true but in our western civilization money is needed to survive, and society judges us by how much apparent wealth we have.

I would totally agree that money does not buy us happiness.
Money can't buy love and since love is the source of ultimate happiness therefore it can't buy happiness. True there are things money can replace but it cannot buy love. Things are temporary and the more we invest in temporary things the more we waste our money into them.

Just spend time with your family, run charity organization, be generous to someone or somebody.
Do something with your money that can change the world for the better even if it is just small at least your money has done something for the better.

  • Money relieves the stress and unpleasantness that comes with not having any.

While it may not create natural and lasting "happiness", it certainly is a commodity that one does much better with than without.

Money buys the joy of having rather than the sorrow of want.
