I went to a presentation by Marshall Sylver. Very entertaining. Of course at the end he wants you to go to a 3k bootcamp. I am sure there is other stuff out there. I have a book by Paul McKenna. He used to go on the Howard Stern show. You can get it at Amazon or Ebay for cheap probably. I bid on the 3k bootcamp at ebay and was out bid.

You were lucky you were out-bid. You really don't need to pay $3,000 for a bootcamp on hypnotism. However, it is very difficult to learn from a book.

It's almost like learning to sing from a book, if you know what I mean. You need to learn this from a good teacher. (If you are interested, please feel free to PM me.)

Google Sylver to find out a bit about him, too. I think you'll be surprised.

Anyway, the answer to your Does hynotism work? question is, yes. It's what I do for a wonderful living, too.

Yes, Yes, Yes. There are many books out that give examples of how hypnotists have helped their clients/patients. Whatever you wish to change you can. Hypnosis 'works' only because the subject is open to the idea and the hypnotist can never make anyone do anything against their will. You saw a stage hypnosis show. You're probably looking to get trained if you really want to help yourself or other people. Just make sure they're certified instructors and preferably a member of NGH (Nat'l Guild of Hypnotists)
        I know because I'm a retire hypnotherapist.

I think the best way to learn how to make long lasting changes is to see a qualified hypnotherapist and have him/her teach you self hypnosis in the office and practice a few times before your session is up. I would also request if they don't offer it a cd so that you can listen to your session everyday for 28 days. Most hypnotists charge $90-$150 so 1 or 2 visits should be very beneficial unless you have underlying issues about what you want to change then that could require several more sessions. NLP is good too especially if it is woven into the hypnosis session.

Yes, hypnotism works. I actually learned how to self hypnotize myself, which works. The only down side it that it only lasts a day. They say to practice every day for 28 days, but I found that after 28 days of hypnotizing myself, I reverted right back to my old habits or gained the weight right back, or whatever I was working on at that time.

I've even purchased hundreds of dollars of tapes and cd and got the same result. They only worked for a day.

I think the only way to actually retrain your brain to do certain things for lasting results is to get hypnotized by someone who is certified.

It worked for me. I quit smoking almost 4 years ago now. It has to be in alignment with your desires though....another issue of making sure you really want the change and can forgive and love yourself enough to let it go and be!

See, that's what I've wondered about myself, how long-term is it really? Self-hypnotism helps me calm myself when I need it, but that's very short-term, and not even meant to train new habits. I tend to think that no matter how hard you try to train a new habit, if there's some subconscious belief blocking it, no amount of hypnotism can work.

Any auditory or visual tool designed to relax you can help you into the state you speak of, but CHANGE is a different matter altogether (although, if you regularly use such tools to relax, then you HAVE picked up a new habit!).

Some Important Steps To Real, Measurable Personal Change:
          1. Decision - Know The Behavior You WANT (do not give attention or thought to the behavior you don't want (it gets enough attention as it is already!))
          2. Leverage - You need a powerfully motivating reason. For some, they have to be willing to painfully imagine, vividly, without mercy, projected the outcome of their failure to adopt the new behavior. For example - what will failure to adopt the new habit mean for you in six months, a year, three years, TEN years? Some trainers in NLP and NAC really focus in on this step, getting their trainees to endure pure hell so that they are COMPELLED to choose the new habit. Additionally, after people are feeling the pain of possible failure, the best step is then to project, vividly, meaningfully, what the REWARDS will be under the same timeframes were one to successfully carry out the new habit! For instance, what will it mean six months, a year, three years, TEN years from now if you were to make that new habit a part of your daily life!?!
          3. FIND A SUREFIRE TACTIC FOR DISRUPTING AND INTERRUPTING THE UNWANTED HABIT - You MUST have some way to snap yourself out of a pattern WHILE you're in the middle of it.
            1. Most people endure a psychological condition known as Cognitive Dissonance while engaged in something they don't want to be a part of. This is an emotionally painful inner conflict occurring when stuck between two competing ideas, ideals, or options.
            2. Further, we tend to do these things robotically, while totally aware that we are doing something that's not in our best interest - as though we were stuck in an out of control car, unable to steer it in a decisive, straight, steady course!
            3. If you have something already set up - a tactic, some outside help, a 'trick' (so to speak) - that can bring you out of the funk and back into the present, the here and now, so that you can make another choice, then you're at an advantage, because the more you interrupt a mental pattern, the more it messes up the neuro-physiological map of that habit that has been etched into your brain; making it harder to repeat that habit!
          4. PRACTICE DOING THE NEW HABIT AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE OLD!!! If, with every opportunity, you interrupted and prevented yourself from carrying out the old habit, and immediately executed the NEW habit (or, if not in a physical position to do so, simply VISUALIZED yourself carrying out the new habit, mentally, with vivid intensity), then you would quickly begin establishing the new habit in your life, laying down the new biological pattern in your brain. The more deeply it becomes etched into your brain, the easier it is for you to carry out for the rest of your life.
If you or anybody else decides to go the hypnosis route, then the key will be to learn how to - arrange a way for doing it - on a daily basis, and then APPLY the principles of the hypnosis script on a daily basis so that it STICKS.

It's the same with ANY system for personal change. Only by applying it (conditioning it, making it REAL in life, making actual changes in the brain) does it succeed.

Yeah, I agree, you need to put in a lot of extra work to make sure the new habit really sticks. I think it takes something like 28 days of straight practice for a habit to form. But you need to do the conditioning, however you choose. The hypnosis session alone I don't think is enough.

I'll never forget in high school when a hypnotist came for a show, and turned my friend into "Richard Simmons"!

I'm not joking......he really did that! It's something I'll never forget. My friend was on stage jumping around just like Richard Simmons would do it.

Then, about a month later this friend and I went to Parris Island for Bootcamp in the Marines.

He was always scared I would bring it up to someone...but I never did.

            So, yes it definitely works.

  • As Christie stated, the typical reaction to hypnotism (ESPECIALLY that which is done 'TO you' rather than you to yourself) is a quick start but a slow finish, if one finishes at all.

Hypnotism does work if you CONDITION it through constant repetition and life application practice and as you would have to do with Affirmations, Mantras, or Resolutions.

NOTHING in the way of habitual human behavior changes without LITERAL, PHYSICAL changes being instilled into the brain.

If you go the hypnosis route to change, DO NOT SPEND $3K unless you are getting PERSONAL, EXTENSIVE attention over a significant period of time from the trainer him/herself. You can spend FAR LESS than that and receive not only professional hypnosis services, but certification training as well.

A good introduction for you would be to acquire a work such as Healing Yourself With Self-Hypnosis, by Dr. Frank Caprio & Joseph Berger. Give it (or similar) a good read so that you thoroughly understand the cognitive technology associated with hypnosis. Even Marshall Sylver sells course materials on his website that would suffice for getting a solid understanding without blowing thousands of dollars.

Then, find a pro (not an entertainer) who will simultaneously provide hypnosis service and either basic training so that you can continue the process yourself, or certification training so that you can help yourself and perhaps somebody else; perhaps even make a little money in the process.

The most important, fundamental thing that hypnotism can address for the sake of real personal change is that it goes directly to the source of ALL personal change, which is YOUR MIND.

Make your THOUGHTS the focal point of personal growth, and everything else will take care of itself.

It works, but with one important caveat... You must trust your therapist.

Also, if you are interested in self-improvement work, get some NLP training from a good NLP program, not a business NLP program - very important! I recommend anything associated with Richard Bandler. PM me, if you like. I can tell you where I go for my "self-improvement retreats."

Ahhh, yes, the always-true-yet-rarely-helpful claim that it's all online so don't bother buying.

Of course it's all online! All the truth, all the lies, all the scams, all the real deals. You can find it all online. The challenge is knowing whether or not you're finding useful, helpful, accurate information or not.

Reminds me of the story about the man who's equipment broke down and he didn't know how to fix it. He finally called an expert who came and after 30 minutes took out a small hammer and lightly tapped in a very specific spot on the equipment. Immediately the equipment worked perfectly again. The repairman sent a bill for $1,000. The man who used to have the equipment problem was outraged. He called up the repairman and demanded an explanation. The repairman simply said, "Oh, the bill? That's easy. It was $50 for tapping on the machine. It was $950 for knowing where to tap."

Having the right knowledge and using it well is worth something. For those who want to get it right, they're willing to pay for it. Of course, with so much out there, you still have the challenge of figuring out who's giving you the right information and who's not.

Such is the challenge of life, though.

Yes it does work. But it only works if you allow it. The one Marshall is using is stage hypnotism. That's a show in my opinion. Then you have the real professionals that work in private practice. That's real.

The bottom line is, it will never work for you if you are not in agreement with the practitioner. Where two or three of you gather in agreement...

Basically, if I say, "you are going to relax now," you immediately allow yourself to relax instead to talking yourself out of it in your head. It's not about fighting the suggestion. It's about accepting it.

So, you can seat down right now and say, "I'm going to close my eyes and see myself basking in the sunset on the beach in the Caribbean." Then close your eyes go there and feel the scenery. That's the beginning of self-hypnosis.

^Yeah, that's what I do for myself before I go to bed at night or if I am stressed out by something. I say to myself that everything will work itself out and that I will be okay...and I notice instant physical affects from that. Or when I cannot sleep at night for some reason, instead of getting increasingly frustrated and more worked up about it, I tell myself that whatever hours of sleep I do get -- they will be exactly what I need and I will wake up refreshed and feeling better. These two exercises have worked for me reliably.

Hypnotism worked to help me become a non smoker. It worked for 11 years until I let myself undo it. I've since been hypnotized by others and it did not work those times. The reason - the successful hypnotist simply took me back to the place in my mind where you are naturally a non smoker (as we all start out). This is different than quiting, it is re-acquantance with a familiar and natural position.

The hypnotists that did not work for me conjured up visions in my mind of trolls dragging me by the hair, across a rocky beach, into a cave. Totally different approach.

Hypnotism worked for me, but you have to reset the defaults of the mind.

There is no need to pay that kind of money.

      Best regards.

Hypnosis depends on three things to be a success.

Firstly, a desire by the subject to want a permenant change to occour at the time of the first visit.

Secondly, the belief that it will work.

Thirdly repetition. It generally takes 30 days for a habit to form so a good hypnotherapist should give you a CD to take away with you which will reinforce the suggestions given in the session. Where most people fall down is failing to listen to the CD as instructed and so they talk themselves out of the hypnosis because their subconcious would sooner cling on to the old habit than change to a better more positive one.

I've been to a Marshall Sylver event...he's way too "vegas" for my tastes. Kept pitching everything under the sun, showed us slides of his "casa de sylver" (the latest and greatest multimilliondollar mansion he just HAD to have) and how we could mentally program ourselves to be millionaires. Eh. Marshalll...(insert rolling of the eyes here)

But in terms of hypnotism, yes, I believe it works if you want it to. I wholeheartedly subscribe to the idea that we program ourselves with good and bad habits, and sometimes hypnotism can get reveal why.

Personally, I went to a hypnotist for weight-loss several years back. During a session, I came to realize one of the reasons why I have a hard time controlling myself in eating fitness bars, (balance bars, etc) is that a girl used to steal my granola bars out of my lunch when I was a kid...that compulsion to eat as many as possible was a safe guard against someone taking it away from me.

Of course, the hypnosis itself didn't help me with weight-loss, or give me motivation to exercise, but that one little nugget was definitely revealing.
