Hi Warriors,

I was thinking about what Napoleon Hill mentioned in his book "The Law of Success" regarding knowledge.

He stated that knowledge, general in nature, and unorganized, is not POWER!" It is only potential power-the material out of which real power may be developed. Knowledge must be organized.

Your thoughts?

To your success,

AJ

Perhaps knowledge can be power... but perhaps not always.

In computer science we disguised between data and information. Data is just a bunch of facts - information is when the data has gone through a process of interpretation. I think if you refer to knowledge, it refers to interpreted facts. Once you gain the information, from the facts, you can start taking action.

I don't know if Knowledge is power or not. Most of my actual functional projects aren't based on a massive amount of knowledge. Generally, they're based on a very short phrase that works every single time.

To draw: draw what you see, not what you know.
To stay thin: no Gluten (for me, anyway...)
        To play guitar: patterns!!

Workin' on the one for money...

What about the concept that power is knowledge?

I.e that those in power have better access to information and therefore are more powerful

Acting on knowledge is ultimately power. No point memorising chords on a guitar if you can't play them.

To borrow from elementary physics, knowledge could be described as "potential energy." Think of a rock on the edge of a hill, ready to be rolled. As you gather knowledge, your "hill" is growing, causing the potential energy of the "rock" or your project to grow. If you never grow your hill, your rock will make no impact. If you grow your hill endlessly, you will be too tired to roll your rock, and you will fail to make an impact with your mighty hill.

The trick is to build your hill just enough to make a significant impact, while simultaneously rolling your rock closer to the precipice. Then, once your hill has reached a significant height, you are in a prime position to unleash your "rock" upon the world. Remember, there are always more hills and rocks to conquer, so get out there and start building and rolling!

I think I like analogies a little too much.

Read Michael Foucault social theory on power/knowledge and you'll see that knowledge can mean control.

I think I understand what Napoleon said.

    My take on knowledge is:
In the times that we live in....Today's knowledge is tommorow's history.
If you want to have power then you have to have more than knowledge...a way to create knowledge for yourself constantly and that involves some kind of organisation.

Knowledge is power. But knowledge with application is more powerful. Knowledge will open and create opportunities for you and this is power. Others are not able to recognize opportunities around them because they lack knowledge. When you start acting upon an idea to achieve a goal, that even makes you powerful.

I actually have to say yes but also echo the statements of others that you need to know how to apply it.

I suppose it's easier to understand when you view knowledge as a source of power therefore it technically is power.

You can say it's like electricity, nuclear energy, or even mana (if you're a fantasy nerd like me :p). By itself though, power sources don't achieve much and can even be harmful if you don't know how to channel them properly (e.g. electric shock, nuclear disaster, backfiring boom spell).

It's the same with knowledge. If you're just going to stock it up for no significant reason, then what's the point? You're just wasting your energy studying and it's just gonna rot in your memory anyways. You need application to learn how to make the best use of that power inside your head. :p

But of course it is only Applied Knowledge that can be categorically said to produce Power.

You could call it "Kinetic Knowledge" - Knowledge and skill skill in motion.
