Are you asking for enough?

Sometimes I think we ask for too little. We set our goals too low. We say gosh if I could just make another hundred a week things would be great. Or another thousand a week. Or to live in a house in the slightly-more-upscale neighborhood nearby, or to get a better car, or to land that job that's not only less of a drive, but would be $10k more a year too.

What if we set our sights instead of another $10k a year on another $100k a year. Or $1m a year. What if we say: instead of the more upscale house down the street, a beach home in Hawaii, or to have several properties throughout the world. What if we say: instead of paying off my student loans, to not only pay them off, but to have enough saved up that my kids and their kids will never have to even think about applying for a student loan.

Anyone get what I'm saying here? I have gone through a lot of this. There was a time when I said: If only I could land that programmer job would be so great. Then after getting that job, I said wouldn't it be great to live downtown in the city and I could walk to work to that programmer job. And sure enough - with some determination and effort, I got the apartment downtown, a few blocks away from the job. Then, after I did that for awhile I set my sights on getting a house away from the city in a nice suburb area which wasn't a bad drive, and eventually I was able to obtain that goal. Then after some time I decided I didn't like office life and set my sights on working from home. Sure enough, now I am working from home and for the moment everything is great.

But the thing is, it's all been little-by-little. Little goals and incremental steps, one after another, and looking back on each step they seemed like fairly big steps at the time. Even now I still do it. I told my wife last year that I need to start landing some extra freelance jobs, and I put my attention on that and now I'm working the extra freelance jobs. It just seems that wherever I put my focus and energy, I find it can all be achieved, and I look back and I'm thankful and grateful for everything and the position we've got to.

However, I really am wondering now: perhaps I haven't been asking for enough. Perhaps my attention and focus has been for so long on those smaller incremental steps, that I haven't been dreaming or thinking big enough. What would happen if I dream really big? What would happen if I put my attention on not just a little extra income and a few measly freelance jobs, but got set on really making some serious cash, or achieving real financial independence and abundance. Or, forget the money - what if I put my attention on making a contribution to the betterment of the world like ending hunger and poverty, or on a business or organization that helps people in some way?

Am I thinking too big or too "unrealistically" for any of you?

What if the only thing holding us back are our beliefs about what is possible and what isn't possible. After all, what do you tell yourself when you say to yourself "I'm going to go out and make ten million dollars next year". Does your mind respond with: "in your dreams buddy!" or "yeah right, it'll never happen!"? What if it's that negativity and doubt in the mind that is the only thing preventing you from going after those things? Or keeping you from even trying? I love the saying: "Shoot for the moon - even if you miss, you'll land among the stars"

I really think there is something to this. We lock ourselves in to what we think of as being "realistic", and we hold ourselves back from our true potential when we tell ourselves that our dreams will never happen.

So how about you? Are you asking for enough? Are you doing the incremental step-by-step thing? Or are you going after bigger, grander achievements? What's holding you back? What's stopping you from dreaming big? Are you shooting for the moon, or are you shooting for just getting by?

Something to think about, Mind Warriors! I'm wishing you all much success and great fortune...

People always underestimate their abilities. It's unfortunately part of being a "good person". Us remaining small however doesn't do anybody any good. Sometimes, I think it is good to start thinking small lest we get overanxious and overwhelmed by a seemingly monumental task -- monumental only because we haven't experienced anything quite on that level before. Which brings up another good point that I'll delve into at the end.

The universe doesn't know the difference between $1 and $1M, but we are often stuck in the pattern of judging and comparing. My daughter always asks me "Is _____ good or bad?" To which I respond "There is no good or bad. There just is." To ask for more, we must first come to grips with the fact that there is no right or wrong amount to ask for. Things just exist or they don't (many would even argue that they don't exist, but are inventions of the mind).

I think a good way to start is to ask for what you can first comprehend intellectually and once you see the wheels in motion to take the leap to the next level knowing that anything is possible.

BTW, I'll be owning that home in Hawaii.

I think the problem is everyone has great big dreams, but they don't work out the smaller ones on the way, so give up with the big goals.

It's really important to dream big, otherwise you'll never have the motivation to succeed, but in order to actually get there, you need to break it down, to work out how to get the incremental smaller goals in order to reach the end result.

We all give up too easily. I think this post is great - I really agree with it all. It's time to think big, but also to believe in yourself and work out how you can achieve the "big" goal by achieving the smaller ones on the way.

Work out a goal setting template to help.

Keep the big picture firmly fixed in your mind and then WORK at the small day to day things that will get you there. I've made great strides in accomplishing things when I follow this formula. Sometimes we get so tied up in what we actually want, we don't do the follow through to actually start to get there.

    Great post

Me too, what I focus on is beginning to happen but it took the major mindset shift of beginning to focus on micro incremental goals.

Once I began to do that I realised anything was possible!

Having micro goals makes every day a celebration vs having a massive goal and only having one occasion to celebrate!

Thanks for bringing your thoughts up here.
And you are correct while stating that we in general are not asking for enough.
    But what is enough?
Less than what we dream about?
And for just what is realistically obtainable?
A small child is learning how to walk also step by step.
We as grown up's are experimenting with what we can achieve also step by step.
Than all of a sudden comes the day when we know that we can probably achieve much more than we aimed for, so we go for it. Or we don't. Not everyone would like to give it try simply because it's difficult for some to accept failure. But failure is part of the process and it shouldn't stop us.

Realistic thinking leads to underwhelming results. I have no ceiling or box.
