Why it's so hard to get out of bed early... And what to do about it...

For many of us, we get amazing dreams and ideas before we go to bed at night, but for some reason or another, by the time the alarm clock goes off, they have faded deep into a groggy backwater of our cloudy minds and we can think of nothing better than to stay in bed a few minutes longer.

Now as for me, I am the ultimate sleep-lover. If I could, I would be able to sleep 14-15 hours straight without any difficulty. However, after some time I came to the realization that while I was getting all that refreshing sleep, my waking hours were often lazy and lackluster. So I changed it up. These days I'm up and out of bed at 5.30am, and have built this up to become a daily habit.

Now, that's a wonderful plan, but it doesn't always work out as you would hope. For example, some mornings I find it really difficult to get out of bed. And rather than let it slide, I decided I needed to figure out what was making the difference. Then I started to notice the trend, what factors were making it easier or harder to get up.

And it was simple. Preparation (or lack of it).

At that hour of the morning you do not want to be making decisions. You don't want to be deciding what work you need to do. You don't want to be trying to remember what tasks need to be done first. You don't want to be deciding whether to go for a walk around the block or a run up the mountains. The mere thought of having to make these decisions is enough to keep you in bed in the morning. Your brain will find any excuse to keep you in the warm, cozy bed. Don't give it one.

Prepare the night before. If you have a bunch of emails to send, put them in a list, along with some notes for what you wanted to say. If you are going for exercise, have your running shoes and gym bag waiting by the door. If you had some great idea the previous night, have it written down, along with the first couple of steps you need to make. Prepare, prepare, prepare.

By having everything laid out like this you can hit the ground running. All you need to do is jump out of bed. Everything else is laid out there and ready for you. Try it out for yourself. Believe me, when you wake up and you know there is a plan of action for the day, your body and mind will be pumped up for the challenge.

    ORLY?

Get a dog or a cat.

They'll get you out of bed more effectively than any alarm clock. "Hi, I want food and attention now." Example:

Me, I'm motivated by what I want to do and it's hard for me to sleep. I wish I could sleep more!

Anyhow, as you say having the first couple of steps for the next day all push-button ready to go is a great idea.

I agree, even if my dog isn't making any noise at the bottom of the stairs I will still wake up as my subconscious knows I have to get up to feed and walk him - no alarm clock required! (unless it's an especially early start )

      That's funny - - but true..

My cat will start meowing to be fed early in the morning..

Then you're up and about and have a good start on the day.

Bookmarked!---you gave me two blogging ideas.
Kevstorrs, Well-said. I was searching hard for anything else I could add. My only suggestion would be...create a to do list of goals for the upcoming day. Have it displayed in a prominent place. No online form of any sort. Make it an old fashioned pen and paper to do list. Make it something you can touch and feel. That to do list is your goals...things you will do. I repeat, the list is created at night before you go to sleep. It is amazing how tough a taskmaster you can be, before you retire at night.

I recommend you ease off, don't try to be too tough on yourself by listing too many tasks at first. You want to believe that the list is doable and you will do it. Add a couple rewards/incentives to motivate yourself to complete the list.

Keystorrs---I recommend you cut and paste your post to create a blog post, either here or on your blog. Your post is long enough and better than most posts I have read.

It's what you do when no one is watching
that determines what you will be able to
    do when everyone is watching.

I know exactly what you talking about. I always want to lay in the bed even when the alarm clock ringed but I prepare also and have everything in place the night before.

For me what I just do is try to keep my schedule. So say I go to bed at 10 at night I make it a point to make it a habit and do it everyday. After a while even if you break the habit on weekends it still comes back to you on weekdays. So that my waking hours are not that difficult.

@kaniganj i know exactly what you're talking about! our dog is notorious for waking us up, so i do my best to get out of bed before getting rudely awakened!!

@davidsneen thanks for the kind words; i don't run a blog for personal stuff, just thought i'd post up a few ideas on here. nice additions you made too..

something that really keeps me motivated in the morning is this... a mid-morning nap... at about 10.30 each day i will get back into bed and enjoy a one-hour booster sleep... believe me, nothing feels better and you wake up fully refreshed and ready for the second onslaught of the day!!

I have no problems on getting up early, but my friend does. He struggled to wake up early due to his continuous feelings of heart palpitation and little vibrations on his head and upper bodies, but I think he's going to overcome it one day.

It is important not to fight your natural cycles. I have a lot of friends who are night owls, so getting them to join the 5am club is suicide, AS LONG as they are productive as night owls, which a great deal of them are.
You are correct that the worst time to get your brain to think is just after it has woken up, that is why army interrogators will make someone tired and sleep deprived because they can't think straight, so having what is known as a ritual that requires no thinking is the order of the day here.
Recent research states the optimal duration of sleep is between 6 and 8 hours. Any more or less and you will begin to experience detrimental effects to the mind and body.

Thanks for the insight kevstorrs, I have been terrible about getting out of bed lately. I will set out everything I have to do the night before and that should help me out.

When you reach a certain age, it is impossible to sleep too late as you simply MUST get up or face the consequences

As I've said a few times all of my good ideas come at night, so it can be a little annoying because at that time, the time for productivity is gone. However, I write them down and work at it the next morning. Although my mind is not on overdrive in the morning, coffee helps.
