How Do You Focus Under Pressure?

How do YOU focus under pressure?

Pressure of any form, really... maybe not necessarily the pressure of maybe getting kicked to the streets, but the pressure of your own mind... how do YOU focus, during times there is so much to think about? What do you tell yourself, in order to calm down and focus?

If you know your Intent, how do you Focus?

How do you concentrate on the task at hand...

Pressure is merely a distraction from what we think needs to be done when we concentrate on consequences rather than results.

The way I deal with it is to concentrate my efforts on the job at hand doing the very best job I can.

An example might be my mortgage payment is due in 2 hours (days/weeks/soon.) It is my choice to spend my efforts worrying about the problem of not having the money or work at solving the problem.

In order to really focus under extreme pressure, I have to go and unwind in a relaxing manner.

When the pressure is intense, my brain will work and work and work trying to solve the point of pressure that I basically turn in to an airhead, lol!

I mean I read and don't comprehend what I've read, I listen to something or someone but never hear, I do things but later can't remember if I've done them and if I have, I don't remember doing it.

I have to escape at that point and my favorite place to detox from the pressure is in a jacuzzi tub with scented bubble bath, favorite music, some candles and just let my body relax as the jets soothe tight muscles, and the effervescent bubbles caress and rejuvenate me.

After stepping away and relaxing, I find I can then deal with the situation that is causing the pressure much better as my focus has returned anew.

I guess that sometimes in order to focus, I have to first go and unfocus.

I tell myself that I am in control, I will get through this, one step at a time, and I try to stay focused on the outcome. I also look back at all the high pressure moments in my past, just like we all have had to some degree, and think to myself that somehow it all worked out and I survived. Some stuff I can't even remember. Sooo this to will pass.
    Hope this makes sense.

There's a few strategies I use. One is having lists and priorities. When I'm clear heading, I write down what my top most important tasks are. When I'm stressed, I just focus on the next thing on the list. Then I know that, whatever I may be feeling, I'm using my time wisely. That's the big one for me.

The other strategy is the flip side of that, taking a break, quitting work altogether for half an hour, watching TV, spending time with my kids, then trying to re-focus.

I also tend to purposely relax to take my mind off the pressure.

Taking a hot shower really helps me destress. Hot showers almost automatically make you relax, which is good for coming up with new ideas and such.

It is really so hard to concentrate when you are in pressure. But what I am doing when I am on that situation is that I kept telling my self that I need to finish my tasks on time and listening to my favorite songs while working helps me a lot not to worry much..

Pressure is one reason that really distracts me a lot. In order to deal with it, I should maintain myself being positive and to manage my time well on finishing one task after the other.

Pressure to me is self-created as no one can create that emotion inside us, only ourselves. We have the ability to control our emotions.

Easier said than done sometimes, but nonetheless, controllable by ourselves.

I get it, how to cope with stress and pressure is the forty dollar question, but consider this:

    1) Anger is a product of fear
    2) Frustration is a form of anger
    3) Pressure causes frustration and stress

So, the real question when we are feeling pressure (which going up the line causes anger) is to get to the root and determine what we are afraid of?

    Think about it...

In that answer lies the secret to calming the pressure, as we have to deal with (and calm) the underlying root of the problem...

    FEAR, which is...

    F-alse E-vidence A-ppearing R-eal anyway.

Personally, I top it all off with a Serenity Prayer, as I've typically got a full on party going on in my head - LOL!

By removing the pressure, by dealing with its causes.

There are times when some kinds of pressure can stimulate, motivate and energize us...

But otherwise, I'd avoid it at all costs and use my own ways to motivate myself...

I was asked at one time. How do you eat an elephant? The answer is 1 bite at a time. I find if I get frustrated or stressed, if I sleep on it, or just step away for 5 minutes, then I will come back with a renewed perspective, and be able to complete the task at hand.

I am lucky enough to perform well under pressure (back against the wall).

So much so that I often create a situation where my back is against the wall just so I can perform in that moment. Not recommended unless you can deal with it.

      Simon-
I am glad that you can perform that way. I can as well, but I don't deliberately make situations to do this.
Most people cannot. I don't like this type of situation, but I can deal with it.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it either.

This is largely a result of my procrastination. I don't get a result until it's absolutely necessary.

So I deliberately engineer the situation to reflect that.

Develop a swagger. Establish your confidence to get things done. Give yourself props for the things you've accomplished. Allow personal accomplishment motivate you. Allow failure to do that as well. Consider the pros and let that influence you as well. Peace of find, financial gain, whatever that is there to help you establish the confidence needed. Use the benefits to help motivate you and give you the confidence needed to overcome adversity. Sometimes to establish your swagger you'll need to learn to have fun again. Don't take everything so seriously, you'll learn to relax and get things done more efficiently. Learn to laugh at problems and not let them consume you.

One of the ways of maintaining focus under pressure is by having the ultimate reward(s) one will gain at the back of one's mind. By knowing that if I can get through this or if I can achieve this task in spite of the pressure, I know that this reward or this achievement is coming my way.

First, planning so I don't bring down pressure on myself. Secondly, if plans go awry, take a deep breath, play some music or walk the dog, allowing my mind to run free.

I also release all frustration, which exacerbates pressure. No use 'crying over split milk' when something goes wrong, just look at what action can be taken to put it right.

Be part of your own solution, not the problem.

Just recently I had the pleasure of meeting a Polish Dr who had trained in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine in Beijing and he has taught me to watch my breathing.

All too often I find I am caught up with researching something on the net or I am learning a new product and because of the concentration my breathing becomes shallow.

If you do the same as me then you are putting your heart and brain under stress and the best way to combat the lack of oxygen to the heart and the brain is to do move away from the computer and do some full breaths where you expand the diaphragm first then the mid chest and then the upper chest and hold for 3 or 4 seconds then exhale fully.

Give it a try...it works wonders.

Take good care of those that you love.

Pressure is everywhere. You can't avoid it.

I recommend any physical activity. Personally I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Mat therapy.

It doesn't change the world, but it gives it less power over you.
