I Waited Until the Last Minute, Did You?

Now a lot of people might not like me saying this... but.

I just waited until the very last minute to do something and guess what.. it worked out.

Seeing as I planned to have it done by 2/17/2012 and have had 2 months to do it, I seriously waited until the day of to do it.

I'm a serious procrastinator and sometimes it sucks, but I always try to follow through.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this with everyone. It may not have been the best thing to do, but the point of the story was that even though I waited until the last minute, everything came out better than expected.

Do you wait until the last minute on things? And if so, why?

P.S. I don't suggest waiting until the last minute. I just find it funny that when I do, I usually put even more effort into things.

I TRY to plan ahead and be on schedule to avoid "last minute stress syndrome" ... but it doesn't always work out that way!

There are times when I do wait until the last minute and as you've mentioned, Justin, I seem to put more effort into it, focus better on it, and produce a better result. If I hadn't waited for the pressure of the last minute, I might have just dragged myself through the task, been uninspired and produced a mediocre result.

Also like you, I don't recommend waiting until the last minute ... but sometimes, it is a workable and beneficial technique!

While it's not always advisable to wait until the last minute to do things, that's often when the real inspiration and/or motivation to actually DO it kicks in. Nothing like knowing you're on a deadline to get you motivated to do something. When you know you have a lot of time to do a thing, it's easy to put it off. A looming deadline can be a terrific motivator, and you can actually produce some good work that way, as your inspiration also kicks into high gear when you're motivated.

I'm a procrastinator by nature, but I always start things early now.

When I'm relaxing on the day before a project is due, I thank myself for starting early.

I'm a natural procrastinator. It drives my wife crazy sometimes. It's fine until something unexpected happens. Then you haven't left yourself enough time to correct things.

If there was a prize for being a procrastinator, then I am sure I would get the 1st prize. I have paid heavily for this and till date I didn't get a proper solution for this problem. I keep postponing things until the last minute and finally it's too late to start. My family says the day I get the solution for procrastination I will become a billionaire soon.

Although I am very guilty of this, sometimes I don't put my best food forward doing things at the last minute though my motivation skyrockets because of deadlines Still, I like the security of having things already done before its actual deadline!

If YOU MASTER WORKING UNDER PRESSURE,YOU MIGHT JUST FIND YOURSELF TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF YOUR LIFE.IT IS UNDER PRESSURE THAT WHAT IS WITHIN US COMES OUT.TRY CLOSING THE DOOR OF YOUR BEDROOM WITH YOUR CAT INSIDE,AND THEN THREATEN THE CAT WITH A BEATING.IT WILL FORCE ITSELF OUT,EVEN IF IT MEANS BITING YOU FIRST.

I think setting deadlines for yourself is a really good idea whether you are a procrastinator or not. As long as you get done who cares how you work.

It depends how motivated I am. Back in the day when I went to school (okay, I'm not that old), I would wait until the last minute to write a paper if I "just had to write it". For exciting major classes, I would start very early. When it's last minute, I have few good focus (you need to to get it done, after all).

In the world of business, I don't really like waiting last minute. When I've outsourced something, like the creation of an ebook, it seems there can be a lull when I can't really do anything until I get it back. But that's not really procrastination.

Procrastination is a battle between the intelligent brain and the emotional brain. All you need to do is get rid of all the distracting, quickly satisfying things in your environment, then your emotional brain won't say: "Oooh, I want this now!"
It's amazing what even a procrastinator can achieve in a room with nothing but a table, a chair, and pen and paper in it.

Actually there is a part in the 4 hour hour workweek book where it discusses that when you give yourself almost unrealistic deadlines, you will be way more productive. If you give yourself two months that will be more than enough time for you to achieve it, why do it? you will wait because you know you have enough time to do it anyways.

Time pressure makes people more productive in most situations, I think. You are like a perfect example here.

Yep, I've gotta agree here BUT it does depend on how YOU handle the pressure.

As someone said you can get an adrenalin rush and your focus can be really laser like and the job gets done better than you thought possible whereas another person may go to water and not get the job completed at all.

As the saying goes "horses for courses" so tread your own path.

Unless you need two months (like you're physically training for something), that point makes too much sense. If you can do it this week, or today, why wait put a two month goal? Get it done sooner!

Yes,procrastination has been a major enemy of mine. Its because of a fear of not getting what I want done perfectly, but it would be better to get what I wanted done instead of dillydallying and getting nowhere.

I remember in school when I had a report due I would finish gathering and reading most of the research material early on,but didn't start the report until the night before it was due. There's a massive adrenaline rush that I get from doing things I know have to be done in a short amount of time. I usually can think better and get things done faster, but I may or may not have time to look at any minor mistakes I made.A bunch of minor mistakes can add up being a major one.Thats why I just allocate pieces of time during the day to get something done every day instead of waiting until last minute to get it done. That way I can make sure I have enough time before the deadline to carefully review what I have done and eliminate mistakes

Now this post really hits home. I have always been a serial procrastinator. I remember in school I would always wait until the last minute to finish my assignments. That's a really good idea of setting unrealistic deadlines to motivate yourself to accomplish more that I will have to start implementing.

Ive always been a big time procrastinator. What I have started doing is writing up a daily to do list and trying to do as much as I can per day. If i dont complete the list I dont beat myself up over it, because I still achieve more than I would of without the list.

You need to embrace what you do achieve and not what you don't.

I also am just "deciding" to "just do it" when faced with tasks I dont want to do. What you'll find is doing it is never as bad as you think.

Hopefully if you keep this up, it should form a new pattern in your body and you'll be an ex-procrastinator

    Interesting discussion Justin.

I'm someone who likes to plan everything and get it ready ages before I have to. Not that it always happens that way...

My brother and business partner on the other hand, is the geek of our business and is notorious for leaving things to the very last minute!

The thing is, I've noticed he produces his BEST work by far that way, leaving it to the LAST minute!

I've also noticed that putting a firm date on something seems to magically bring everything together by that date (or close to it) whereas if not setting a firm date, things sees to drag on forever.

    Cheers

I've written a play in one sitting, I've written a symphony in one sitting. I've written whole short stories in one sitting. I've gotten 'un homeless' in one sitting.

Everything I do well, I either do it in one succinct event. If I can't do it in one sitting, I can't do it at all. Puts the 'pro' in procrastination. I can only do things well if they're in one sitting.

So for me, while there is no 'last minute', I do have to plan my money online to be things I can do in one sitting. Which means that sometimes, doing it on the day it's due works fine. Not because I'm procrastinating, but because I can sit down and do stuff in one sitting on Monday, five days before it's due, or I can sit down and do stuff in one sitting on Friday when it's due--the amount of time spent on the project is the same.

If you master how to work under extreme pressure, you might just be the employee every company will be looking for to hire. Most companies in our days like people like you.i can call it procrastination if you were to do it and have not done, only waiting for the last day.But it is very different, when you can deliver, when it was actually someone else s procrastination. This is a rare quality. This kind of people fail, but they also achieve unimaginable results. If you have not failed before, you will not know what to do if faced with a similar situation in the future. Thanks
