The Rest of "The Secret"

by X

I've been involved in the "alternative
self-help" industry for many years.

I've coached hundreds of people on
every imaginable aspect of common
desires.

I think "The Secret" was a great film
for communicating awareness about
things that had been too "woo-woo"
for the mainstream.

And I believe "the secret" works -
it has worked in my own life.

But my buddy Larry Winget says
it best:

"You want the *real* secret? Here
it is: What you think about, talk about,
and get off your ass and do something
about comes about."

My biggest issue isn't thinking up the ideas, it's taking action on them. I've committed myself to a 30 day IM project. Each day I've set out to make new posts, submit new articles, create new content and then measure that success. I'm 5 days in... this is very hard to keep focused on.

"The Secret" is a feature length commercial for the books and coaching
products of Joe Vitale, Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor, John Assarraf, and
      others.

The financing of the film was gathered from the participants - modeling
Canfield's "Chicken Soup For The Soul" vanity-publishing concept. Each
participant in the film who had a product or coaching program paid around
$50k to be included. A cancer-survivor was included too, and presumably
she and her husband did not have to pay to be in the film.

Is the film really that bad? In my opinion it's silly... but more ominously
many not-very-smart people who watch it carry away erroneous and
child-like ideas about how to get what they want out of life. They make
"vision boards" and try to "manifest" their desires and get nothing - which
makes them ideal prospects for coaching programs which teach them
      "how to do it correctly".

Kevin Hogan is a very respected author in the field of persuasion - and he
basically tears "The Secret" a new one here:
The Secret...The Truth Behind the Lie

I am not saying the film doesn't have some nice ideas in it or that it is
not entertaining and inspirational - just that a great many impressionable
people have watched it and gone into a world of dillusion. It is not
a film I would recommend showing to children. It's not scary, it just
      spreads false ideas.

.X's insight is a good one. You don't need to watch new-age movies
to figure out what you want, learn how to get it, and take action.

I think that The Law of Attraction is like "the secret"....

It works as hard as you do!

But I suspect that since what we achieve in life depends on what we choose to FOCUS on, and people who are very successful ten to be rather OBSESSED even, that the message does have some validity, even if the packaging makes it look too easy.

Like they say, the harder you work, the luckier you get!

          Hello Omari Taylor here,

Wow. I love this quote. I never heard it before. When someone becomes successful, people with the employee mindset say you're lucky. But people with an entrepreneur mindset know that they control their destiny.

Interesting, probably the most frank description of this film I have come across. I've not seen the film, but I did see "What the Bleep Do We Know," and I imagine that film followed a similar marketing model.

Do you have a source for this? Did you read it somewhere? I would love to archive any source on this issue...because that is dishonest marketing, imo.

"The Secret" is a great introduction to the LOA. However, I agree that it has major shortcomings in that it oversimplifies and misleads people as to how creating your own reality works.

The real reason why most people who watch The Secret and use its methods are unsuccessful is one thing and one thing alone: Subconscious counter-programming.

It doesn't matter how badly you want something in life - if your subconscious wants something else (which is generally the case for most people), it will see to it that you never reach your goals - generally via procrastination/unfocused attention.

That being said, the LOA is still very real. When you truly start practicing the principles which support it, life starts taking on a whole new dimension. Not just in the way you think, but in syncronicity that cannot be explained by science.

Of course, the rub is that the ONLY way of proving that this is true, is by practicing yourself - not for a day or a week or two, but on a long term basis.

I dare anyone to practice these principles and not become a firm believer in a universal force at work behind the scenes.

It is my opinion that anyone who argues this point simply haven't done the work necessary to prove it to be true.

The law of attraction can not be proven scientifically any more than love can be (try proving scientifically that you love someone - you can't, yet it's still very real).

        Just my 2 cents.

This may sound stupid, but how do put your thoughts into action? Let's say that I want to make 1 million dollars in 2009 and currently I have very little money. What kind of action should I do?

Unfolding starts with little steps of action, these then offer up rewards or signs your moving in the right direction.

There is nothing unique about it..We all can do what ever we want.
Action is key..Reverse engineer your goals and theres your steps.

            Elizabeth,
It doesn't sound stupid at all. I highly recommend you read a basic book on the LOA to get cracking. The best one I've read is "The law of attraction" by Abraham/Hicks.

As they explain, any action taken while you're NOT feeling good will generally not move you forward. You must first get yourself to that "good feeling" place. Once you're there, you'll be inspired to take the right actions.

Also, use a method or tool to help you. In my long search for those things, I have found 2 things that made ALL the difference in the world to me. PM me and I'll send you the links.

As was mentioned earlier, "The Secret" was heavy on marketing and used a lot of video promotional techniques to get the message across - after all it was originally produced to air on the Channel 9 Television Network in Australia for a wide audience..

For those already well-acquainted with the concepts, many saw "The Secret" as over-hyped and just touching the surface of the ideas presented.

However, it was also successful in introducing many in the "general public" to some core ideas and that they were available in a context that was outside the usual religious presentation.

The real value lies in the follow up that took place when many looked more deeply into the concepts and decided to become better acquainted with the material introduced.

i totally agree with post#13 above, it really made you think and understand the law of attraction better but left out just enough for you fail and give up or look more deeply.

i think the most important was stressed the least in the movie, and that is not to simply focus on what you want but to actually act on it using a well thought out plan.

many will simply think its a total mental process and not do anything, and those that do act will more than likely get very persistent and pro-active but not have a well thought out plan.

the net result is a lot of wishing, or a lot sincere trying, but without a good plan, there will not be good results - and unfortunately most people give up on themselves rather than giving up or modify their approach/plan.

it's simple really focus on what you plan, plan how you'll achieve it(get help along the way if it does not work out), and be persistent - but you still have to know when your ideas are bad and when you should throw in the towel and start over.

I've been pretty deep into this
idea for a long time - in one manner
or another I've had the opportunity
to work with 5 or 6 of the 'celebs'
    featured in the film.

I've also worked for companies that
teach people to "get what you want
only by releasing", aka "The Butt
    System".

    Unfortunately marketing sometimes
smears the essence of a message -
you really can get what you want by
releasing all of your negative feelings -
    I've done it many times.

    But that doesn't mean it's a passive
activity, or that you can have a
thought a few times per day and things
    magically fall into your lap.

We can thank God it doesn't work
that way, because you'd have everything
you ever worried about within the hour.

It's more of a process of removing the
crap to get to the cream. Some of us
have more crap to remove. And often
    it's a 2-steps forward, 1-step back
process of loving the concept then
cursing it. That's because of a little
thing called internal resistance - it's
the ego pushing back against your
    efforts because becoming what you
want to be requires the death of
    what you are.

    Resurrection requires complete faith.

In order to allow this death you must
have faith that you'll get what you
want. If there is any hesitation, or
lacking in commitment to the objective
    then no deal.

And if you're not willing to get off
your butt and take action, then there
    you go.

I'll do what I can in a post Ted, and point you
to The Abundance Course for the rest.

Think about something you want -

Now, notice any stress or tension you feel
        related to HAVING THIS.

For example, make the declaration "I will
be a millionaire by the end of 2009."

Notice how you FEEL about that as REALITY.

        What you feel is resistance.

Resistance is the accumulation of thoughts,
once conscious, that now reside in the
        subconscious.

You wouldn't know those thoughts exist
        without the feeling.

        Here's what's cool - you don't need to deal
with and address the individual limiting
        thought - just the feeling.

The feeling isn't real - it's something you
have chosen at some point in time to hold
        on to.

        EXERCISE:

Hold a pen or pencil in your hand.

Notice you have the choice to drop that
        pencil.

Choose not to drop it, but instead to hold
on tighter and tighter until it becomes
        uncomfortable to do so.

This is what we choose to do with feelings.

Now, open your hand and let the pencil
        fall to the floor.

Notice your arm relax, and tension go.

If it's that easy to let go of a feeling, why
don't we let them all go?

        Most we do -

But, imagine you replace that pencil with
a fragile and prized object - a fine piece of
china, a glass object - something you imagine
would shatter if you dropped it.

It's harder to let that fall isn't it?

Something happens in life, we attach a
meaning to it, if the feeling attached to
that meaning is strong enough we hold
on and stuff it away in the subconscious.

This then becomes resistance to having
        what you want.

Release (let go of) the resistance and
you free up your energy to move forward
        again.

Every time you feel stuck in making forward
progress, notice how you're feeling and
let the feeling go - this takes practice.

One way I practice this is to go outside
when it's cold and notice the feeling of
cold and how I resist being cold. When I
let go of resisting the cold I become
warmer. When I begin to resist the cold
again, I become more cold than before.

There's way too much to teach in post -
        but it works.

All the best to you - X

I agree, the Abundance Course is a good recommendation.

The Secret was a good start to help some folks wake up, but like anything else it has its limitations. The scariest thing to me is how willingly people put their total faith in a movie, watching it hundreds of times, expecting results.

Wading through crap is an accurate description of our existence. We come in bright and shiny and get a whole heap o' crap programmed into us.

Resurrection? I'll save that for another post.

The information to assist is easily available like never before.
Remember to always look within, have faith, take action, be in the now and stop "longing."

2 steps forward and 1 step back seems to coincide with the Law of Rhythm and we eventually make progress.

All of these "Laws" are fun to play with, but without the foundation of self-worth/love, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

          My 2 cents.

Here's the Truth.. Ronda Burn, attended a cruise with the founders of the"concept" of the Secret.

Its actually a channeled energy that offers the knowledge, like the books of "Seth"
