5 Ways to be more confident..

If you have ever watched 'The Apprentice' you will see at the beginning every contestant portraying their version of what it means to be confident. Chin up and proudly self-proclaiming they are the best apprentice that has ever appeared on the show.

Unfortunately, a great many of them come off as looking like a bit of an idiot!
Confidence can seem, at times, like an elusive quality that always appears out of our reach; some people have it, some want it.

What would you do differently if you raised your confidence levels to just 5%? That's right, just 5% because that is all you are required to do at first to be more confident.

What would you do more of in your business if you were to kick the confidence scale up a notch? If that moment of hesitation which instigated that inner talk wasn't activated, what would that allow you to do?
The advantage of confidence is that confidence is not a genetic, engrained component. That means that by spending time enhancing the components involved in confidence you can notice changes in both yourself and your business
Here are 5 ways you can do that;

1. Segment - Too often people label themselves as lacking in confidence, but don't segment out where they are lacking in confidence. Is it doing presentations? Is it talking to strangers at networking events? It is very rare someone lacks confidence in every area of their life. Become clear on what you would like more confidence in. One of the problems with people that lack confidence is that they can globalise what they lack confidence in so instead of 'I'm not confident presenting in front of my peers' (specific) it is 'I absolutely bomb at presentations' (Global)

2. Focus outwards - Typically people who lack confidence are 'in their head' too much. Internal dialogue takes over and they disconnect with the world because their inner thoughts consume their awareness. Begin to focus on what is in front of you, becoming a keen observer of what you notice. When you have this down, expand your scope of awareness so you can notice what is around you and behind you. When you focus outwardly, you are not focussed so much on your internal thoughts. This extends to when you are speaking to people as well, whether it is a customer or in a public setting. Focus on them and guiding them into a level of comfort around you that they would be willing to buy or just have an interesting conversation with you.

3. Breath comfortably - Become aware of how to breath when thinking about the situation you would like more confidence in. Breathing is affected when in an anxious state. When you learn to breathe in a more comfortable and fluid manner you will find it is harder to go into an anxious state. Start by learning to breath in for 4 seconds and then exhale for 4 seconds. This is a nice comfortable pace and that is similar to if you were just talking to a friend.

4. Stand tall - A confident posture is different to one who lacks confidence. Their posture is taller, their shoulders are back and their head is up. This goes back to an evolutionary capacity when those who were not afraid to expose their vital areas (heart, genitals, neck) were seen as warriors. Begin looking at your posture and start to adjust how you stand. If your shoulders protrude forward due to a lot of slouching, spend time to adjust that with a lot of rowing type exercises and physically stretching them back.

5. Give yourself a break - Normally the person who is bashing our confidence like a sledgehammer is ourselves. We are continually hard on ourselves to the point that we believe the bull**** we say in our head. Learn to call out your bull**** and change it to a way of speaking that is more productive. Ask yourself better questions ("Ok, how could I do that better next time") and be more specific rather than generalise ("I need more work in talking on the phone" rather than "I'm rubbish, I can't sell")

Confidence is like a formula; change what's in the formula and a new outcome emerges. By applying these 5 tips you can begin to see an increase in confidence that can only mean good things for your business and the other important areas of your life.

Steps 3 and 4 are important for several reasons:

    1. They help you to get your lungs full of air. Most westerners breathe from the top of their chests only. The alveoli in the bottom of the lungs have receptors that help in staying calm.

    2. A lot of stress is accumulated in the diaphragm. This can be eased out by the stretching effect of taking in full breaths. Anyone who has ever owned a dog will have noticed them regularly let out a long sigh. They are releasing the tension from their diaphragm.

    3. Your physiology affects your psychology. Standing tall will help you achieve and maintain an empowered state.

Thanks for adding this, I didn't even know about any of that. And it's true, I think I breathe incorrectly most of the time, and now that I do it differently for a minute I already feel different, too.

Good points. I often find myself when I feel nervous and anxious that it's really a biological feeling in my body from something rather than psychological. Like if you drink too much caffeine or something and your nerves are feeling irritated.

Then cause of the influence of the body state feelings on the mind it gives me the illusion that I'm more afraid of different things I think about. I'm not actually more afraid of them, it only feels like I am cause my body is so nervous with the general anxiety sensation so it feels like I'm afraid of the things I think about.

Deep breathing is Deffinetely one of the ways to help calm the nerves. Along with mindfulness and relaxation techniques, blood sugar balancing, drinking more water, getting lots of sleep and avoiding stimulants.

Excellent advice! Lack of confidence sometimes stems from a fear of what others would think. A whole train of negative internal dialogue acts to make things worse.

A great way to get around that would be to focus on what's happening around you.

    Thanks!

These are all great tips. I especially like #5, since most people I know (myself included) are our own worst critics. It's a matter of being aware of our thoughts, and changing the way we think/talk about ourselves.

I also like your idea of the 5%. Take it in small steps, a piece at a time, and in just a little bit of time you will be amazed at the difference in your life!

    Thanks for these.

@NicOliver thank you for adding more! Chest breathing is chronic in most people and have never experienced diaphragm breathing. Babies are lucky in the fact that they have not been on the Earth long enough to pick up bad habits, so they breath perfectly from deep in the stomach.

    Physiology affects psychology and psychology affects physiology. This mind-body connection is only being realised in the last decade and some really interesting things coming out of it. When someone says;

"it is like banging my head against the wall", it is very common they experience head aches as well.

"I've got the weight of the world on my shoulders" - They represent it in their body through aching joints.
This world of embodied cognition is massively important when talking about confidence because how confident do you think the person is when they say "I feel like im on top of the world". What we say has a big impact on how we feel and as you realise that you can become more confident in both your body and your mind.

That is a good point - think like an actor doing a character study...see the situation from the other perspective, surroundings, from the other person's shoes, apart from the inner dialogue...bring the dialogue from the third person...into the first person. It helps to mirror their perspective and relate to them from it, while projecting confidence. Become the confidant.

(oh, and like Spencer Tracy used to say: "don't bump into the furniture" )

This tip is especially helpful for me. Many of us, glued to our computers for hours on end, day in and day out, could fall prey to this disconnect, easily. I never made this particular connection.
Its really important to take those breaks, focus outwardly, and engage with others more often.

So true that these negative thoughts are counterproductive. Sometimes I will confide in a close friend who often helps me see things more clearly.

Thanks for the great post! I found myself nodding at much of what you wrote. Now if only I could keep those things in mind when I fall into that nasty habit of criticizing myself.

I'm taking this as "getting out of one's comfort zone". That may be the best advice to increase confidence.

Second, it is always important to constantly remind ourselves that everyone in the world has insecurities. If you know that they may not be confident, it elevates your confidence since you know they are more likely to accept you.

I think it can be. People may not take action because something's out of their comfort zone. Staying in one's comfort zone, is, well comforting, but where has that comfort taken them?

In addition, like you say, increasing confidence does wonders.

buckeyes09 This is the idea around segmenting what the individual would like to be more confident in. If I want to be more confident in public speaking, there is no problem settling into my comfort zone while i am at home watching TV.

However to increase my level of confidence in public speaking I have to be prepared to experience an uncomfortable feeling, but hold it together enough to do public speaking. For someone to be prepared to do that they have to see the short term discomfort will lead to a long term benefit and they have that image in their mind rather than an image of people laughing at them and messing up.

We as humans seek comfort so will always see resting in our comfort zones as highly appealing. In order to move out of our comfort zones requires us to reach a threshold in our experience that drives us outside of our comfort zone temporarily to receive an anticipated gain.

    Hi Aaron,
You are right! Confidence is what that everybody has, that lies inside you may be its lost for sometime. I believe confidence is gained through positive identification and encouragement. It does not matters you know everything or not but confident comes when you know how to handle it. I think the important aspect is to believe yourself to understand what potentiality you have.

      Lots of good information.

I think I suffer the worse when it comes to breathing. I'm pretty sure I just forget to breathe.

Back when I was in the Marine Corps, confidence was a big factor.

A Corporal taught me the importance of confidence when I was doing weapon watch.

It was doing combat training so we had a lot of different weapons all laid out in rows and as weapon watch, my job was to make sure no one took them.

This Corporal came up and asked me how many of each weapon there was.

Well, I had been sitting there memorizing it, repeating it in my head, because there were a lot of different weapons and a different count of each. So when he asked I spat it back out to him in a clean, clear, confident matter.

He told me that he wasn't going to actually count. He believed me because of the way I presented the information. He told me if I had sounded like I wasn't sure, he would of stopped and took count of every weapon.

It was a good life lesson.
