Does Meditation Really works ???

Hi,
I have heard that Meditation helps one to keep one's own mind under control.. Is it true ???

What is your opinion about Meditation ???

    Well in order to control the mind you need to make an effort but yes meditation puts you in a very calm state, which makes it easier for you to control and program your subconscious mind.

    We have to ask yourselves: "What is meditation?"

    Most people think of the image of a monk sitting cross-legged humming.

    I put it to you all that meditation is something very personal. One persons meditation may be different from another persons.

    I meditate simply by going for a walk (and clearing my mind of all thoughts).

    I find this practice does help (to answer the question of the OP).

      I've been meditating for many years, and I can say that yes, it certainly helps to control the mind. It's an ongoing thing, and change happens slowly but surely, if you keep up with the practice. Meditation practice itself is generally very simple, but it takes some time and patience to see results. I do a meditation that is part of a spiritual group, you can find information at www. sos.org, its all free. There are many other meditation techniques out there that are very good, and I believe you would be able to find something to your liking. I teach it in my group, and have for many years. The main thing I find is that people don't stick with it long enough. If you have a true interest, I highly recommend you try it, and give it enough time so you enjoy the benefits, and are inspired to keep going.

    I meditate several times a day. Especially when I first wake up in the morning and definitely when I go to bed at night. I tend to meditate when something has just angered me, or I just need a minute and I just clear my mind and focus. I'm not one to go for hours or anything like that, but I set my timer on my watch for 15minutes and that's it when it beeps. I find myself more at peace, more focused and relaxed.

    I find it very useful to enter into a calm, meditative state before visualizing my goals. It keeps me more clear-headed and focused.

    So yeah, you could say it helps to control the mind, in a way.

    as a coach, i wouldn't want your mind "controlled." Meditation is a good starting spot for clarity, though.
    Try this- in the morning, find a quiet place and get comfortable. Make the "ahhhh" sound, out loud. This is the sound that tells your mind that you are ready for the day. At night, same quiet place, make the "mmmmm" sound, like you would after a great meal or sex. You are teaching your mind to be satisfied with the results of another amazing day.
    In between, keep a notepad with you. When your mind is racing, try to write down the random thoughts that are flying around. Over time, you will notice patterns in the randomness and discover issues that your mind is chewing on, then you can spend time doing online research, speaking to mentors, etc. to give your mind the information it needs to complete those seemingly random thoughts.

    Meditation, self-hypnosis etc are all variations on the same thing. They are all ways of entering Theta state and renewing oneself.

      I am the same way.

      To answer the original question: yes, absolutely meditation helps.

      And it is truly different for everyone. I used to sit and 'try' to meditate. If you concentrate on meditation, you are Not meditating. From a post above, yes, keeping a notepad handy is a great practice.

      I am to the point where I was able to relax enough to allow the meditation to renew me and refresh me. It made a HUGE difference in my productivity and overall attitude toward my day.

        meditation is not substitute for sleeping but it does have physiological effects.
        our brain act like computers. when you have many "programs" running in the background you feel paralyzed and unable to take action, just like when you have many software running on a PC, and it makes it slow.
        When you meditate you clean your mind off everything and that you are able to concentrate on the one thing you really need to concentrate on. Making money

        Hi, I'm replying a bit late to this thread and it also happens to be my first message. But I'll share something very personal.

        A couple of years ago I went through depression... and I mean it was like physical *pain* and in retrospect it probably was severe. Pure hell.

        I tried a lot to shake it off, and the ONLY thing that worked was Pranayama, which I would consider a form of meditation (focusing on your breathe). It's known as yoga of the breathe. I still ended up on medication temporarily, but let me tell you, the only time I had relief was when I practiced. It works, period.

        Although I no longer practice Pranayama, I still do meditation and count my breathes... 1 in, 2 out, 3 in, etc. I have no doubt that it keeps me calm and focused. Like a little mini vacation each time.

        We're all busy these days but to me it's the equivalent of showering, an absolute necessity. Take it from me, do it regularly for just 5 minutes a day and you will see a difference.

        I slept on the couch last night on and off for awhile. Then I did a meditation style Oorta for about an hour. And then I was fine...

        Weird.

    To meditate is to focus on something in a calm manner and contemplate it. It will calm you because that is exactly what it is. What you meditate on, however is what makes it different for everyone.

    When I meditate on something, it is usually on truth found in the Bible. I examine myself, to see if I am doing what I ought to be doing.

    Is it ok to quote a Bible verse here? Times have changed since I was young. I just joined, and this is actually the very first thread I landed on when looking around. LOL This is a Bible verse about meditation, though not using that word:

    Philippians 4:8

    New International Version (NIV)

    8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.

    Imagine, if everyone alive just filled our minds with these things... the world would be a nicer place.

    Meditation is not really 'mind control' it is a very effective method of calming the mind. There are just about as many different methods of meditating as there are people, one I love is to meditate as I walk along being careful not to cross roads though without looking.

    If you find it hard to 'clear the mind' as many meditations suggest, just acknowledge any thoughts, then let them go, don't try to 'work them out or through'.

    Find a way which suits you and practice on a regular basis.

    NO BODY CAN MEDITATE!

    This is one of the biggest fallacy around about meditation. You can do things which lead to meditation. Meditating is not an act like thinking, doing or working. Meditation is a quality. Calling meditation as a state of mind is ok but not accurate.

    YOU CAN MEDITATE WHILE SMOKING BUT YOU CANNOT SMOKE WHILE MEDITATING. Read that again . A quote from a Zen master.

    meditation isn't for mind control..it works to quiet and calm your mind.. it also help that a few minutes of real deep breathing ..in through nose out through mouth..gets o2 into your system and feeds your brain.

    but is your meditating for an hour ..you get in your car and someone cuts you off..and you spend the next 10 minutes grumping about it ..your not doing it right ..

    most of the thoughts in your head are not your thoughts .. meditation can help you learn to hear you .

    As with most things there are different ways to meditate so why not research it a bit on the web and try a couple of methods until you find one that you like.

    Just remember though that you are not trying to analyze the thoughts that pop into your head (the monkey mind chatter) when you are sitting quietly meditating you are just concentrating on your breathing to quieten your mind and change the brain wave pattern.

    Take good care of those that you love.

      YES! But it depends on your meditation.

      I lost 50 pounds with it after being overweight most of my life and got some of my eyesight back. I've also meditated out of flu and colds numerous times, fixed back pain, ear aches, hair falling out, hiccups and about a zillion other things. (Hiccups was the first one this worked on or I wouldn't mention it)

      As of about a week ago I saw a vid that showed me how to look at money in a way that I could apply my meditation style to it. I'd never looked at it that way before.

      As of 3 days ago, I locked the system in place to be able to apply it to money. (it required tweaking) In those 3 days, I've mostly been working on eyes still, (details) but I've unlocked a major block I had on IM and my freelancing business and was able to make $60 I wouldn't have otherwise made.

      HOWEVER, this is after years of playing with a zillion different types of meditation until I found one that's this fine-tuned to get results this fast.

      So yeah, meditation works. You just have to find the right one!!

    Meditation is one means to an end to practice Mindfulness. The psychological/spiritual/temporal benefits of mindfulness are what we're really discussing here, or self-awareness.

    To develop mindfulness, sitting meditation is my preference, but also when eating (try to chew 50 times and concentrate fully on the food and its taste--will amaze you) and walking meditation are helpful, too.

    Meditation absolutely works, to 1) Clear your mind, 2) Train and develop laser focus and concentration, and then 3) Deep introspection, reprogramming, and self-knowledge.

    Calming the mind is a stress reduction technique that would benefit ALL entrepreneurs, since we just plain have more of it from the challenges we face, as well as the stress of positive change and growth.

    I commit to stress-reduction practices as fully as I am committed to physical exercise and taking care of my body. There are just more benefits to being calm and relaxed to list. Your problem-solving abilities (i.e., your main role as an entrepreneur) are virtually ZERO when your mind is rippled and unclear.

    Developing laser-like concentration carries over into your workday, helping you stay focused on that task at hand with present awareness and passion. This is HUGE for my A.D.D. brethren who have found being continually distracted to be frustrating and ineffective.

    Lastly, comes the deep self-knowledge. If you agree as i do that mindset is everything in business success, and if you consider that our subconscious is responsible for 90% of our behavior and results, then what could be more important than examining the self and your beliefs, and bringing to into consciousness what was hidden?

    Get to know yourself and you'll find the solution is within and always has been...not outside of you in the form of a guru or tool or funds or whatever you think is holding you back.

    Absolutely true.

    I would add that as you become self-aware through meditative states that it is both empowering and healing as well - you simply feel better and more able to address any challenges that come your way. Worth doing for that reason alone, though the numerous other benefits certainly don't hurt.

    I've been meditating for years and I never perceived it as controlling my mind. Perhaps it could be said it's not allowing thoughts to control my mind. I'm emptying and calming my mind, which allows me to be aware, mindful and awake.

    Since I began meditating, my physical and mental health has improved and my spirituality has deepened. My work output has improved as I'm able to better focus on what I'm doing with less mental chatter.

    The more you meditate, the better your life will be. It doesn't matter what you believe in, meditation is one of the best ways to relieve stress. If you don't know how to do it, don't worry. I didn't either the first time I did. Just try it. There is no right or wrong way. And eventually you will learn your own way. Its just a matter of time before you start to really learn how to do it. When I don't meditate, I find a MAJOR difference in how productive I am throughout the day. PM me if you want some help :-)

    Daily meditation is a habit of mine that I will be keeping for life. I feel a profound difference when I don't meditate first thing in the morning...more easily frustrated, loss of perspective, feeling less productive/valuable. Meditation has been described as "stretching your mind and warming it up so you can go about the rest of your day without pulling a muscle"...I agree with this. My life is better when I'm meditating regularly, find out for yourself what it can do for you!

    I believe that you can clear your mind with meditations and self-hypnosis to direct and clarify your thoughts and actions.

    In my experience, mindfulness meditation is a wonderful way to stay centered and calm from the moment you wake up in the morning until you fall asleep at night.

    I strongly recommend Eckhart Tolle's free videos on YouTube.

    Yes it does help a lot in many ways. As a Blogger, Consultant and Marketer I got stuck in huge multi-tasking and role swapping every hour.

    Meditation helped me to prioritize the work I do and set my mind in state of calm, which is very essential to think productively.

    I do not do it regularly now, but on weekends when I am planning for coming week I strictly do meditation.

    In short, YES!

    I tried the seated meditation for years on my own and was unsuccessful in quieting the mind. It wasn't until my martial arts practice led me to explore the internal methods (static and moving)that I was able to let that internal chatter (monkey-mind) go. I discovered a standing meditation that builds the physical body, increases endurance, and calms the mind simultaneously in about 10 minutes or less.

    In my experience, taxing the body while in the various postures distracted the internal dialogue long enough to reach the next level of mental relaxation and focus. Once in the state, you begin to see things clearer and from an unbiased (non-emotional) perspective. It gives you tremendous clarity on issues, and a much calmer demeanor in your daily activities.

    The method I use is accumulative as well. The longer you do it, the better it gets. I would recommend meditation to everyone.

      To me meditation means emptying the mind from any thought (including the thought that the mind empties, which is still a thought) and after a while of "void" (which actually gives the feeling of being connected to everything, and enjoying it), picking a subject and focusing on it.

      So yes this can only help achieving your goals. But although it seems easy, it is not. Peace of mind requires training. Every day a bit keeps the mind fit.
      And the best part is, it's addicting!

    meditation is very helpful in focusing & calming the mind. I tend to be all over the place & jump from one thing to another, & when that happens, I will just take a 10 minute break & meditate & calm my mind & I am refocused. So, yes it works!!

    Meditation can be done in different ways. I personally do it for peace of mind and for coping with day to day situations. There are some relaxing audios out there with water sounds (waterfall), you simply blank out any thoughts, focus on the breathing and let your whole body relax. Try it for 10 mins and see how you feel.

    I sometimes feel that I am surrounded by chaos, depression and negativity but the meditation wipes it all out. Just my way of hoping but we are all different. Use the method that works for you.

    I done Martial Arts for just over 10 years. Whilst I done some meditation myself, defining the meaning of Meditation can really come into many different things and not necessarily just sitting down and all that jazz.

    It can be achieved in time, but consistency is key just like many things, and then hopefully you will achieve your state of mind.

    I knew a guy who once spent a couple o'days meditating and got into serious troubles for that. Since that time I'm against "meditation for slowpokes" and all that stuff. Only proper training brings positive results.

    I've been meditating since I was a kid (My whole family did this as well) I find that it helps you keep your cool when everyone else is losing their focus. It's a good thing to try to do each day because I believe the positive effects build up over time.

    Meditation preaches the realm of the non-thinking. It is obvious that you feel calm for you don't think.
    Meditation is wrong. I may understand the visualisation process to entail one's mind to conceive structural space while closing the eyes, but meditation in itself is WRONG.
    Thinking is the one best way to succeed. Meditation = non-thinking or the realm of no thoughts.

I hope there is something here that can help you or someone you know.
    Is meditation effective for pain control?
    In the Journal of Neuroscience a study reported a 40% reduction in pain intensity and 57% reduction in the unpleasantness of the subjects pain. Morphine typically reduces the ratings about 25%.
    Can long term meditation practice help prevent dementia?
    In Neuroimage a study comparing 27 long term meditators and 27 control subjects found the meditators showed a range of brain areas with stronger neural connections and less brain atrophy.
    Can Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) help prevent relapses of depression?
    The Archives of General Psychiatry reports a study of 84 subjects who took antidepressants until their symptoms were in remission. Then 1/3 remained on antidepressants, 1/3 underwent MBCT and 1/3 took placebos. After 18 months relapse for the antidepressant and MBCT groups was in the 30% range while the placebo group was at 70%.
    Does mindfulness benefit cancer patients?
    An analysis of 13 research papers and conference abstracts showed significant improvements in anxiety, depression, stress, sexual difficulties, and immune function. More research is needed but so far results are promising. (Psycho-Oncology)
    Does meditation help women cope with menopausal symptoms?
    110 women who had bothersome hot flashes each day did mindfulness training and stretching exercises. After the program, they reported less stress and anxiety and their menopausal symptoms were no longer considered abnormal. The slept better and rated their quality of life better.

    Yes, I believe meditation helps too, but the problem is I can't sit in one place for 10 minutes straight! I always get distracted, so I've never benefited from my brand of "meditation".

      It's definitely not a placebo effect. Placebos make you believe that you're healed or on your way to being healed, so that puts you in a positive state of mind. Meditation actually works in itself. When I meditate I go within myself and and sort of push the "reset" button when it comes to all the stress and frustration I feel. Also it doesn't have to be religious or spiritual. You can meditate just by sitting in a quiet place and focusing on your breathing.
      If you want to try meditation, I find that guided meditations are a very good way to get started. I like TheHonestGuys on Youtube:

    If you need to control your mind then yes, meditation works; you will have to put some effort in and try to practice daily, even for a few short minutes at a time, in fact its best for beginners to do short practices.

    A regular meditation practice will definitely allow your mind to organize and stabilize itself, and this will allow you to gain peace, happiness, clarity, and tranquility.

    My partner and i meditate repeatedly a day. Especially when My partner and i 1st wake up every day and also definitely once i hit the sack during the night time. My partner and i tend to meditate while some thing provides simply angered myself, as well as I just desire a moment and also I just crystal clear my brain and also target. I'm not one to go for hours as well as everything like this, although My partner and i arranged my timer with my watch for 15minutes that is the item while the item beeps.
