How to Use Traveling Time

I spend around 80-90 minutes a day commuting to and from work. Earlier it was Radio or Music that was a part of that block of time. But I realized wasting 32 hours monthly and then I changed that habit and started listening to educational/motivational audios.

I practice Spring Forest Qigong...So when I drive I sometimes do a Qigong meditation. Other options while driving are creative visualization - Imagine you are in the car you want to be driving. Also saying affirmations out loud is a good practice.

Traveling time could be utilized to learn a new skill through some good book, if you like to meditate then you can even do that during that time.

    • When I used to commute (so happy I don't have to any more) I would make that time into productive time. If I had writing to do (blog posts, articles, or even books), then I would bring my laptop and use that 60 minutes to and from as writing time.

Other times when I had to drive during that time I would use it to catch up on my reading. No I wouldn't read while driving. I would listen to audio books or use software to convert the pdfs I had to read into audio mp3s (yes sometimes words are mispronounced). You can even get software to convert Kindle books into audio mp3s.

I would always carry a digital voice recorder with me so I could make notes as I went. Then upon getting home I would use Dragon Naturally Speaking to convert those notes into text. Sometimes I would even do this for entire chapters of a book I was writing. Sure I'd have some errors to fix but for the most part it did a great job.

Even now when I ride my motorcycle I have a system hooked up via Bluetooth so I record notes as I ride. Something about having that time in my helmet really unleashes my creativity.

I rarely drive any distance now where I get to listen to motivational audios, but a few years ago when I was on the road more, I listened to personal development audios from Brian Tracy.

I agree that it is an awesome way to make much better use of your time! Brian calls it your "university on wheels."

Yes so many people spend so much of their day commuting....mine use to be 2 hours a day as well....

I did the same thing...I was just listening to the annoying radio with so many commercials...then also music cds...but then started listening to programs on cds..audio books etc on the field I was studying in to make my business better...I'm telling you it made a huge difference..

I would listen when I went to work in the morning...on the way home....2 hours in already..they get on the computer until I fell asleep every night....I am now ...like many of you....FREE!....I went from a crappy job to making a good deal of money online...even have employees that work for me now!

With this kind of focus and dedication...you will succeed at whatever you are pursuing..wish you the best!

When I commute, I mostly listen to podcasts related to my interests and niches. So podcasts about business management, internet marketing, Apple and technology. I find that listening too much motivational audiobooks makes you numb about that topic.

@GT - Thanks that you drop your opinion despite of being no more a distant traveller. Yes it's 'university on wheels' and everyday when you listen I think it clears the mental cobwebs. I think, you may be listening to some such good audio's while performing your routines.

@Greg, After I read your message it stuck to me that while traveling you may be in the driver seat or somebody else is driving for you. As it's applicable for you. And, you're using it wisely. Learning languages in such times is really a great mental exercise. In fact, you are sharpening your saw.

@Michael - If you're traveling for 120 minutes a day then why not you split that. For example while going you can listen to motivational/educational audio and while returning listen to music to shut the stress. GT's opinion is also good.

@mjazhilton, thanks for being at equal poles.

@axelg, I agree with you, sometime I too feel the need to stop audio's and to start listening to my own inner voice. It doesn't mean I leave free my mind but I divert it to think about my goals.

@Warriorwealth, I think this is the key statement in your comment "... then started listening to programs on cds..audio books etc on the field I was studying'. And, this in turn revolutionize your living. Motivational audio's are good but it makes sense if you listen somehting related to your field first.

@gentryliving: Reading too is a good time user while commuting. & I'm glad that you're putting that to use.

@joerudy, well, after traveling done, most of the people relax. And, I agree on this too.

@LukeZ. Very well said, listening too much motivational makes you dumb...Appreciate if you can provide freelinks for audios related to business management, internet marketing, etc.

    @pittmanstanley : Thanks

@Anja: Saving ideas while traveling too is a good use of time. My expereince says that often idea falls when you're traveling. I remember J.K Rowling who narrated how the idea of Harry P. Originated while traveling. She says.
I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and it just popped into my head.

@Maricela - Thanks for re-cementing the idea that listening to PD's is a good use of time.

@Mariah - Music too is a good option, but, think, of listening to music as well increasing the learning.

@hireave - If music is keeping you going then it's best for you. But, I guess, you've to listen to new music to keep going.

@Kirajx : Yes, all, want to destress, by listening to both, you can achieve this purpose too.

I hate communting, I'm glad I have spent very little of my life having to do it. However whenever I do find myself in a situation where I have time to fill I find podcasts are a good way to spend it.

If you have regular time during a commute,
reading a book whether fiction or a self-improvement
book is an excellent use of the time.
If you're driving, then you can listen to a tape
    of the book or webinar.

Sounds like a great step. I applaud you.

Do you have a blog? If so, is it possible that you can get great ideas for articles during your commute.

You could also review an idea or difficulty you have with your online pursuits.

You could mentally go over your goals for the next day, month, or year.

What am I saying? Listening to motivational tapes is great. But...mix it up. Use some time to apply those tapes mentally. Use some time to further your online pursuits. Use some time to... hey, if you had a stressful day at work...listen to your music and relax a bit to.

You have an hour and a half a day to use for yourself. Why not mix it up, according to your mood?

Try to do a list with activities that you will do during the day, and also listen to motivational audiobooks.

The last vacation i travelled a very large distance. About 20 hours of time, but this 20 hour was very productive. I studied in my ipad 2 seminars of marketing about 8 hours of learning.

I use the time to write, as several have suggested above. It's also a great time to listen to recorded affirmations. If you are not driving, this is a great time to do EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique).

And if you get stressed about the traffic, you can tap about that.

I figure if I have to be on the road I might as well be productive as possible. Now if you will all buy my ebook I just might be able to dump my commute!

There is a wonderful book and audio book by Josh Waitzkin called The Art of Learning. When I heard that it had a really enlightening impact on me. I highly recommend it.

Josh mentions in the book that multi-tasking lowers your IQ more than smoking Mariuhuana.... that was a real eye opener....
