The power of saying "Thank You"

I wasn't known as someone who will say "thank you" to people who have done me favors. But when I read books on the Law of Attraction, I noticed that saying "Thank You" has a powerful effect in my business and my personal life.

Example:

1. After our wedding, I sent out a personalized Thank You cards to all our suppliers with our website address and email at the back. A few weeks later, we got some clients and when asked how they find us, they said our caterer referred them to us.

2. After completing a project for a client, I usually take the time to thank them through email. As a result, I get repeat projects.

3. I get bright smiles from people I say thank you to. Some of them strike a conversation with me and end up asking for my business card.

I just noticed that I feel better when I say thank you and I start to smile a lot, too. Sometimes I get comments that I look so happy and carefree. I just say, because I am grateful for some many things in my life.

If you haven't been practicing the art of saying "Thank You," start today. You'll instantly see the difference!

Agreed. The power of a grateful "Thank You" plants seeds far and wide. Sometimes I even include a little handmade tatted snowflake for the person - a visual reminder of a Thank You from the past.

It's a very easy thing to do, and the results can be unexpectedly huge.

Planting seeds that could sprout into projects at any time... this is what marketing is all about, isn't it?

Absolutely, saying thank you and expressing gratitude in your everyday life, is a wonderful and positive way to "reap what you sow" concept.

In fact I believe that is why so many people miss out on opportunities because of this very concept of expressing gratitude.

That is one quality that I have been sure to instill in my children, although they are still only toddlers. Saying 'please' and 'thank you' is not only having good manners, but it also creates a positive aurora around you, at least that's my opinion. Doing so seems to draw positive things to you and not only that, but people are more drawn to a person who expresses gratitude.

Great postings! So few people really say Thank You and really mean it. What a difference it makes when it is heart felt.

On the other end of the equation - how do you feel when people thank you? Do you say, "Oh, no need to thank me." or something along those lines? I had to learn how to accept a Thank You graciously and to let them know I appreciated their kind words.

Thank You Is A Very Powerful Word. Great Names come to mind like one of the richest King, King David. He was known of being thankful all the times. He was so rich that his son King Solomon became more richer. He was victorious, powerful and is always remembered from generation to generation because he was a Thankful King

Great Guys Like Jesus were known by their signatures before meals. His signature was giving thanks before he eats anything. One day there were in a semi darkroom. No one couldn't see who he was, but when he broke bread and gave thanks, everyone in the building knew who he was.

I agree that saying 'Thank you' is very important.

One of my pet peeves is when you open the door for someone, and they don't even acknowledge you. It makes you feel like you were supposed to open the door for them, like they are royalty or something. Sometimes it makes me feel like closing the door and hit them in the 'you know what'. But I don't. I usually tell them that they are welcome. Sometimes, it reminds people to say 'thank you', and other times not. We really should treat each other better, not because we can get something in return, but because it is the right thing to do.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Terry

An attitude of gratitude, I agree is very important. It helps you appreciate what you have and what you receive. Also giving or doing is also important, even if another persons attitude does not come from a place of gratitude. the deed itself is sufficient and will attract the best from people you encounter.

I think an important side note to saying thank you is
the act of saying, "you're welcome".

All too often we get sucked into the much more common
and less gratuitous, "no problem" or if you're in the mob
    "fogetta 'boutit".

There is a certain amount of gratitude in saying you're welcome
that is almost as powerful as thank you.

It's like a sincere acknowledgement of someone else's gratitude.

I find saying "you're welcome" to someone expressing their thanks
much more rewarding for my psyche than "no problem".

    This is absolutely true!

I did some personal coaching about 12 months ago and one of the techniques my coach taught me for improving my life was the simple act of saying "thank you" - genuinely - to people.

She taught me to look for opportunities to thank people - it changed my whole outlook!

It's amazing the difference just two simple words have made in my relationships with other people and indeed my whole life.

Great advice! Easy to overlook 'cause it sounds so simple, but very powerful if you truly take it to heart and practice it!

    Thank you for sharing!

Reading all these posts makes me even more grateful to be a part of this wonderful forum! On my birthday this month I received a truley wonderful book to help me on my path to gratitude....It is the 'Secret Gratitude Book' In the pages of this book you can write what you are thankful for in your life every single day....You start out by writing something like 'I am so grateful now that....' The more I say thanks for everything I have in my life right now the more I attract great things and people into it.

Just recently I joined a club that is helping me create the life I desire...for that I am truely thankful....

Thanks everyone for sharing their thoughts.....

A recent "Thank You" story that happend to me: I was in the drive through at Starbucks for a morning coffee and that "inner voice" told me I should buy for the car behind me. Well, several days later I went back again.

The ladies that worked in the Starbucks all came to the window to say "Thank You!" They told me that the lady I bought the coffee for several days before just lost her job, she was so sad and depressed, and that me buying for a complete stranger "gave her hope in this economy again."

I have to say...........that was the BEST "Thank You" I have received in a long time!

    Great post. Thank you.
They are two little words, but very powerful. I recently started a gratitude journal (during a low patch) and it really helped me to realize all the wonderful things in my life. It quickly lifted me out of my doldrums and back to reality. Now, I try to write in it as often as possible and I realize how many good things are coming to me each and every day. I also started a family tradition of each person at the dinner table says "what I was really happy about today....". Usually everyone comes up with several things and it brings smiles all around.

Funny that I ran across this post tonight. Earlier I was at the local Walmart and the cashier just handed me my bags without saying "thank you". I looked at her and said, "You're welcome". She never caught the hint! She said, "See you later". I think that retail stores have stopped training their employees to use this common courtesy. Store clerks act as if they are doing the customer a favor. I am big on saying, "thank you" just because it's the best way to show appreciation. Families should say it to each other, too. It keeps family members from feeling they are being taken for granted.

It can depend on the culture.

English speaking countries tend to use "Thank You" frequently.

I live in the UK, and have a house in Spain. I don't speak too much Spanish, but in Spain, "thank you" and its derivatives are used much less frequently than are used in the English language.

That is not to say that people in Spain are impolite - far from it - it's just that the words, phrase, or whatever, are used less frequently.

I've noticed this in other countries in main land Europe too - there are different variations of when and where to use the words "please" and "thank you".

Of course, if you visit the "tourist" areas of Europe, then expect the Anglo Saxon version of the "please and thank you" as has been discussed throughout the thread - and spoken in English too - a second language to main land Europeans.

      Regards,
      Jeff Henshaw.

Something I also do is say "thank you" to myself, well the unconscious part of me. I do this at times like when I'm able to resist that doughnut without too much conscious effort, or when I'm trying to think of an answer to something without success, and then it comes to me later out of the blue, or when I suddenly remember that I need to do something that I had forgotten to put on my todo list.

I'm reasonably convinced that my unconcious appreciates it :-)

The reason is that the mindset that the phrase comes from is one of being open and accepting to things coming into your life.

Watch to see how often you tend to be closed off unless someone does something for you (we just do this by habit), and that "closing off" is what you're doing (subconsciously - not on purpose) to close YOU off to a stronger flow of goodness, however it shows up.

"Thank you" is also a positive affirmation of self-worth, which is immensely needed in an environment where we're socially trained to constantly berate ourselves and not only think, but take way too seriously, that we're not worthy of much and we have to prove it by gaining external wealth, fame, fortune, etc.

It is one of those "magic words" they teach us as children. Then many of us grow up and forget the wonderful doors that a simple "Thank You" will open for us. How many missed opportunities will it take before we realize the power of thanking people?

I see the difference now that I've started Thanking people again. When people know that their actions are appreciated, they are motivated to do more for us.

Thank You for the thought provoking post. A reminder like this certainly helps.

I live by this and this has made a huge difference at work and in my personal life. In todays society you just do not hear the words Thank You enough, so when folks do hear it from you they are much more appreciative and receptive to you. This was a great post! Thank you!
