Giving Credit Where It's Due

Hey Guys,

I tend to read a lot in order to keep up to date with things.

Sometimes when I see good quality content I try to show some appreciation or make a positive comment or just say thanks.

What I find quite amazing is that when it comes to giving credit where it is due, some people tend to nit pick and put people's efforts down in situations when there is clear value being given for free. (I'm not talking about my efforts here. Just in general)

Ok I can understand if people don't want to comment just in case someone gets a big head but:

How hard would it be to either say thanks, make a positive comment or balance the negative with the positve.

OR just don't say anything at all if you can't do any of the options just stated?

    I agree with you. It is so easy to criticize or pick apart the ideas and info expressed by others, but in most cases they are just trying to do a good deed; maybe share some info or ideas, or pass along some tips or recommendations. Instead of simply being critical it would be more beneficial to offer some praise or support.

    I belong to a public speaking group and our emphasis is to evaluate others in a way that encourages them to build on their strong points and work to strengthen their weak points. When you help another person become better, everybody benefits.

    On the other hand, when you only criticize, you discourage them and make yourself look small (no matter how big it makes you feel).

    I really admire your pt.What I practically feel is appreciating people's work encourages them n also builds up a sense of respect in u n them.

      I cannot agree more. One should really give credit where credit is due. I have read countless books (not just ebooks) that have blatantly stole passages or ideas from another book.

      When I use another persons ideas or have derived my ideas from theirs I always mention them in my work. I feel this not only gives them credit but helps my reader in case they want to do more research themselves.

      I learned a long time ago while still serving in the military a good leader doesn't get the praise he makes sure it goes to his team. Same when writing. Of course these are just my thoughts.

      As for critics and people who complain I don't think I can sum that up any better than this famous Teddy Roosevelt quote -

      "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

        That's a good quote as it highlights the difference between a doer and an observer. Thanks for sharing.

        Although the point you made about attributing work to their authors is interesting, I was actually talking more about appreciation than anything else but thanks anyway.

        Personally I find it very useful to have a list of references if I need to delve further into any specific part of a book.

    it's about your mindset, if you stay true to yourself than you'll naturally be gratefull even for small things. People that don't show appreciation are not there yet.

    It is the question that I always ask....

    What came first? The Artist or The critic? To criticise someone constrcutively I can understand.

    Sadly criticising someone for not knowing an answer, or generally trying to put their achivements down is not nice, and we as marketers should show the way really.

    I do see sometimes that some people ask the same question,and that understandably can be irritating, however, if you truly value yourself, do not devalue someone else for asking the same question, as you probably had that when you started.
