My family thinks I'm crazy.

Over the weekend, I visited my family and we all talked about jobs and such.

I told them that my plans for the future were to make money off internet marketing, my webshow, and eventually start my own entertainment business.

They all looked at me like I was insane.

I truthfully said that doing my current job isn't what I want to do with my life (because I hate it), but my family kept retorting that the economy is bad, you need a stable job to survive, internet marketing is a scam, yadda yadda yadda.

They also said I should go back to school and get a masters/phd so I can move up in my job.

No thanks. I spent 8 years in school switching from major to major, dropping out a few times, and eventually getting a degree in something people consider worthless (Liberal arts), but I loved the classes anyways.

It's kinda sad to realize the social conditioning people live in nowadays. Using the economy as an excuse to justify their reasons to be miserable and not doing anything about it.

While it sucks to not have my family's support, I'm still going to continue moving on with my dream, showing them that there is a life outside a cubicle.

The 20 cents I made today is proof that will happen.

I know there's been a lot of these threads, but has anyone else been dealing with this recently?

Many of the Worlds’ greatest Entrepreneurs (etc.) were called crazy. Or, told they wouldn’t be successful. Including Alexander Graham Bell:

When Alexander Graham Bell offered the rights to the telephone for $100,00 to Carl Orton, president of Western Union, Orton replied: "What use would this company make of an electrical toy?"

There are many, many more. So you're in good company. : )

I imagine that it can seem like you're all alone when your family doesn't support you. But you can't focus on that.

Listen to what they are really saying to you through their words.

but my family kept retorting that the economy is bad, you need a stable job to survive, internet marketing is a scam, yadda yadda yadda.
That is kind of scarey since we have heard that IM is nothing but a scam and really know nothing about it other than that. We love you and don't want to see you struggle to survive especially in this tough economy. We want you to do the same thing as we do so we don't have to worry about you. We really only have what we believe is your best interests at heart.
Just take from that conversation that you are loved and cared about. Look at the bright side of things, stay positive and focused and you can indeed accomplish your goals.

Ignorance (not in a mean way, but just lack of knowledge) breeds fear, is all. And just realize that you know more than they.

      Go after your dreams!

You can't listen or look back. No matter how bad things get.

Just make sure you transition out of your job carefully

And if you're concerned about failure and your family really thinks getting a PHD is better, just read this thread:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...y-failure.html

The reality is, failure in the world of work is about the same as online marketing. The only real difference is in internet marketing when you succeed, you are actually happy and have a lot more freedom and enjoyment of your life rather than being tied to an upscale cubicle.

      Exactly this.

I have been telling my parents ever since I was 6 I was going to be working online.

Never believed me. Would limit my computer time. Constantly tell me how computers were a waste of time.

      Now I make 2-2.5 grand a month.

For the last 7 years my family has thought I was crazy for working online. I have told them, at times it is a lot of work anything worth doing has some portion of hard work involved. But that I enjoy the work, and if they took the time to see my work, read my work, and understand my work; I would no longer look crazy in their minds. Since then, %95 of my family member have done what I have asked them; I am no longer crazy in their eyes. I get plenty of support and encouragement from my family, and they are proud of me and my work.

The toughest part of doing work online is many who do not understand are the most negative. My Mother before her passing thought I was crazy. I sat her in front of my computer and had her read my articles, ebooks, and look at some of my blog work. My mom left this world telling how proud she was. I love my work, it is never boring, always changing, and a challenge.

    Not an uncommon response.

I simply didn't tell mine what I was doing until after I made enough money at it to pay the rent and bills (3 months).

Most people want the illusory security of a j-o-b. Truth is that jobs are NOT secure. Only income streams that you control are secure--particularly those where you control the supply of something.

This is a normal reaction from people who care about you. I had the same at first. Just remember they're not saying this because they don't want you to achieve your dreams - they simply don't understand internet marketing and what can be achieved online. Few people do, so just remember that you ARE one of the lucky few to even know about IM!

Ask your work colleagues and I bet you'd get the same reaction. Most people follow the herd without ever even considering the possibility that there are other (better) ways to live.

Keep going and don't let anyone stop you :-)

I think its best to keep your pursuit of internet marketing to yourself. Wouldn't you rather be the man/woman who just emerges one day and says I am pursuing internet marketing as a career with results to show. When your family doubted you, you could then say well I am making $x amount per month to silence them. When one of them demands to learn how, you explain that your coaching fee is $500-1,000 per hour. For non-believers before hearing proof its triple the cost.

I have alsotold my parents that I would like to make money online and work from home and not have a typical 9 to 5 job also. They told me I have to be independent and be able to sustain myself-that is- to be able to pay rent, food and other living costs. I am currently making $3 monthly with cpa marketing and I would like to get to $500 dollars monthly. I am reading a great book about the psychology of money called money is my friend by phil laut. He talks about making affirmations that help you achieve your goals. Great Stuff I recommend his book. If anyone wants to send some tips about making money online this way i would be grateful.

They are wrong about your job being stable... That's an illusion, imo running your own business is much safer because your success or failure is purely your reasonability and doesn't come down to a decision based on someone eles budgetary fears.

I feel your pain my friend. I had the same problem at the start. Every 1 said i am just making up excuses not to go college and find proper job. But when i made my first 1k month my family sat down and had chat with me about it. Since then i have full support and making income full time online.

Life is much more better with family support

New ideas are not readily accepted. The good thing is they want you to succeed.

The others have charted the correct course--keep doing your internet marketing. I can only add, don't quit your job. You will be amazed how much time you can find to pursue your dream. If your time gets freed up [by quitting your job], you will become less inspired, less hungry...and end up hungry in the long run! It has happened to hundreds, no thousands, who are in a postition similar to yours.

haha, it's funny.. but the same thing will always happen to me everything I tell my family about internet marketing.. Their eyes open wide, staring at me as though I'm crazy..

Yes it's time to go out there and kick some ass (not physically) and proof to them that IM does work..

Working in a job used to work before 1971 when money is real money (when money is still back up by Gold).. today, all of us are working for currency NOT money. So that's one of the big reason why we shouldn't hold on to old ideas (our parents ideas)..

    Welcome to the new economy

    It's gonna be fun,
    Jeremiah

Ha Ha in follow up to my earlier post in this thread, I talked with my brother and his wife last night for the first time in about 6 months. We talked on skype. They live very far away and are actually on vacation here in the US (we're Canadian).

Now keep in mind I've already made good money in IM.

I told them what I was doing.

The skepticism! The raised eyebrows! The sidelong looks at one another!

It just didn't sink in. I quit talking about it. IM is simply beyond their world.

My mother-in-law loves it--after she started seeing me pay all my bills month after month with it, anyway...

But you never know how people are going to react. Even after you've already made money!

Hey, Miss Terra nailed it when she explained that your family love you and are concerned for you.

Because they don't really understand what you are doing and that you are trying to build your own business it may be a good idea to follow Duncan's suggestion and sit them down and show them - one on one - what you are doing and what you are trying to achieve.

It is best done - one on one - coz if you try and do it with a family group it only needs one vocal negative person to pollute the rest of the groups thinking.

    Just hang in there.

Take good care of those that you love.
