How do you boost your energy midday?

I like to wake up early and do a lot of work in the first part of the day. And while sometimes the energy levels are up and running throughout the day, there are days when I just feel drained a few hours into the day.

When that happens, I try different things:

- open the window
- go for a walk
- make some fresh tea
- pump up the volume in the headphones

But I was wondering what you guys do.

I'm hoping we can all pick up some new tricks to keep productive all day loooong .

I drink a lot of coffee. Not as much as I used to. About 10 years ago I drank 2 pots a day or so, now I'll have maybe 4 cups. I have to admit, however, that I still get pretty worn out around 5pm.

The biggest problem I have is that I don't sleep enough, I wonder why lol

I see coffee comes up a lot .

I used to drink 4-5 cups a day myself. One day I just stopped. I can't say that I was more energetic when I drank coffee than I am now. I think the body just gets used to having coffee for that boost of energy, and when you stop drinking it, it just self-regulates.

Plus, why lie to myself, there's quite a bit of caffeine in tea as well .

I am one of those unlucky people that am tired and dragging a$$ the majority of the the day.

Here is what I do when I start to feel my energy dwindle:
      1) Drink a cold glass of water. Mild dehydration can cause sleepiness, so try chugging a glass or two when fatigue strikes.
      2) Take a cold shower. Try to shower on the coldest setting. Your body will get used to it in a few seconds so tough it out. This will increase blood circulation, boosts metabolism, and also puts you in a great mood.
      3) Day dream. Think about all the desires you have in life. All the things you would like to accomplish. The places you want to go. The person you want to spend your life with. All of these things will help re-energize you.
      4) Be creative. Work on a puzzle. Play with legos. Engage in something that puts your mind mildy to work and stimulates you intellectually.

Green tea or some other source of caffeine, like a soft drink. Just a little caffeine goes a long way for me. :-)

I like @ericmartinez's idea about getting creative; hadn't thought of that, but I like me a good word find or crossword puzzle. :-) And it DOES make me less sleepy, now that I think of it. It's just hard to do that after lunch time if I'm at the office.

How about taking a vitamin B12 pill in the morning? It helps to reduce fatigue and weakness and I've been incorporating it to my morning rituals and have noticed a difference. Then again I'm a vegetarian so perhaps I'm deficient..but I think just taking vitamins in general helps to ensure that you have all the proper nutrients your body needs to stay energized and alert!

I think like a lot people have suggested, change your environment, if only for a short while... get out there, move around, listen to some of your favorite music whilst going for a walk, jog or workout.

What about even scheduling a meeting with yourself at the local coffee shop to update your "To Do" list and write down your agenda for the rest of the day/week? Works for me

If I've hit a lull in my workday, I like to step away from my desk and take a short walk. When I come back to my work station, I like to update my to-do list. Taking a step away from things then refocusing on what still needs to be done usually takes me out of my energy funk.

I recommend staying away from temporary energy boosters. They pick you up; and then drop you!

A midday nap is awesome. ...or a walk. Why not make it a working walk? Or a productive nap?

Use your creative energy. Think about a certain issue. Focus hard on it. Maybe it is your next blog post, or a perplexing angle on a certain problem. Then go on your walk or take your nap, and allow your subconscious to address your problem. Oh, and have a pen and a small pad of paper ready, so you don't forget the solution.

I am the same way =-) I actually had no solution till I came across an excellent suggestion from a book I am reading. It mentioned simply taking a 25 minute power nap and relax your mind.

This will give you a boost and actually re energize you for the rest of the day. Of course I drink coffee in the morning but it was not until I started doing the 25 minute power nap that I felt a boost of energy.

Give it a try! You can listen to your favorite music while you nap as well.

    Coffee!! lol

Also, if you work out in the morning it will automatically boost your energy levels for the rest of the day. I like to go for a quick run when I wake up. Also, doing cardio as soon as you wake up is the most beneficial time of the day for fat burning.

Make sure to grab a light snack first because if you don't then you have no nutrients in your body and you will burn muscle instead.

    1. Start your day with a drink - and keep drinking
Rise and shine with a tall cool glass of water. Your body can get dehydrated while you sleep, resulting in you feeling extra fatigued upon awakening. And if you start hydrating in the morning, you will be less likely to hit that midday slump. Aim to drink a glass of water every couple of hours.

    2. Include protein and fiber in your morning meal
A donut and coffee combo is sure to send your midday energy levels plummeting - that instant energy from the sugar and caffeine is short-lived. However, studies show that eating a well-balanced breakfast will keep you full and energized throughout the morning so you aren't dragging at noon. For example, have an egg or sausage with whole grain pancakes or toast, or mix high-fiber cereal with yogurt.

    3. Have some coffee with your milk
If you can't imagine your morning without coffee, skip the sugary, energy-sapping blended coffees and have a latte - half coffee and half milk. The caffeine will give you a lift and the milk will help sustain it. Straight coffee or coffee heavy on the sugar will also give you instant energy but then result in a crash an hour or two later. Keep in mind, however, coffee with milk is not a substitute for a well-balanced breakfast.

    4. Nosh a mid-morning snack
If your high-energy morning causes you to quickly burn through your breakfast, have a light snack before your lunch hour. A small mid-morning meal will keep you from being exhausted and ravenous at noon and potentially overeating. Grab a handful of nuts and dried fruit, sip a satisfying smoothie, or nosh a few whole grain crackers spread with a protein-rich nut butter.

    5. Fatten up your lunch - and other meals
Studies show that omega-3 fats help improve brain function and can keep you alert. In addition, adding healthy fats to your meals will keep you feeling full longer and help sustain your energy. Healthy fats include salmon, tuna, nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil.

    6. Consider mini-meals throughout the day
Instead of three substantial meals that are a few hours apart, eat five to six smaller meals every three hours or so. Small meals won't weigh you down like heavy meals, and eating more frequently will keep your energy level on an even keel.

    7. Get moving
Jumpstart your midday energy with a workout. Use your lunch hour to go for a brisk walk, take a spin class, or do yoga. Exercise will get your blood and endorphins pumping, giving you the stamina to get through your afternoon.

    8. Take a power nap
Napping is no substitute for a good night's sleep, but research suggests that a power nap - as little as 20 minutes but no more than 60 minutes - can replenish your mental and physical energy. Any longer than 60 minutes, and you are likely to wake up groggy and have trouble getting quality sleep at night.

    9. Make time to meditate
Meditation is an easy and effective way to clear your mind and reduce tiresome mental and physical stress. The simple act of deep breathing can reoxygenate your mind and body while focusing on a relaxing word, phrase or mental picture can help you reclaim a sense of calm and control, key elements in regaining energy lost to duress.

    10. Stay organized
Chronic disarray can drain your energy because every item out of place is a visual form of procrastination. Instead of letting your cluttered home or office suck the life out of your day, take a mere hour a day to organize one area of your home or your desk. Knowing what you have, being able to easily find it, and having a tidy space will give you a lift and eliminate the energy-sucking effect of clutter.

Well first of all I try to make sure I'm not sitting down by that time, not only does it zap your energy but it shortens your lifespan (seriously, you can't make this stuff up). But here's a long-time regimen I've done since childhood.

I drink a nice cup of boiled and concentrated ginger root tea blended with a teaspoon of lemon juice and some agave sweetener. It works wonders not just for your immune system but also for your sustained energy levels. I drink coffee too here and there but like Sinead O'connor says...Nothing compares :-)

Depends on the person. Remember, it's all about getting your energy back up. For some, taking a short rest, either mentally or physically is enough to recharge their batteries to the point that they can make it through the rest of the day.

A mind that is properly disciplined should have no problem switching gears between pleasurable and necessary activity.

I agree with the sugar remark... I think everyone should just avoid sugar all day long. It's unhealthy, it feels good for 2 minutes, then half an hour later you're drained of energy.

Matcha Green tea works well for me. It contains a chemical that counteracts the jitters that caffeine can cause. It gives a feeling of zest and Zen. Very refreshing!

Aromatherapy oils such as lemon, basil and peppermint are stimulating and make you more alert.

Plus make time to exercise every day, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet 80% of the time. These all help to get rid of those afternoon slumps.

Yes, get away from the desk... Sometimes you forget to take breaks and just become a desk zombie who cannot concentrate on anything in the last hours of the day.

I use a hypnosis nap program that uses time distortion methods to make a 10 minute siesta feel a lot longer. Follow that with a coffee and it's like starting the day again.

I find that taking a power nap, however short, works wonders! It can be as short as 10-15 minutes, but ideally 30 mins or so. Our brain is like a computer imo, when it gets really slow, usually a reset will do the trick!

    Go speedbird!! Same!

Developing the ability to power nap (if you haven't got it already ) is awesome.

I learned when I was an acupuncture student and I remember the book it was in and the date (near enough). It was 1980, and the book was: "The Lazy Man's Way To Riches". (It's famous for having one of the most successful on-page adverts of all time.)

It wasn't actually a get rich quick book as it sounds, it was half about positive thinking, and half about starting a mail order business.

Anyway, I am pretty sure that was the book that taught me about power napping. Now, if I feel tired (and if it happens it will be mid afternoon) I close my eyes, and invariably I wake up around 10 minutes after I get to sleep. And the tiredness - again, invariably - has lifted. Excellent.

The other thing is: get exercise. Go for a walk, or just jump up and down a bit.

Oh, by the way, 3 years later I had a mail order business selling herbs. That biz now turns over $500,000. So something works - thanks, author Joe Karbo. :-)

      Great story, Malc!

I've never tried power napping. I guess I feel it would take me too long to fall asleep and too long to wake up and I'd just waste 3 hours in the middle of the day. But it sounds like it's worth a try.

      Thanks for the tip!

Find that drinking too much coffee has a dehydrating effect which requires drinking lots of water to balance it all out. Tea is great for me thus far. Would like to be able to get down to power napping but it's certainly a rusty skill on my end. Never quite believed in power napping until a buddy of mind demoed.. Gotta be osmosis or something coz soon after could do power naps of 15mins and feel great ! Thanks for reminding me on this !

Totally with you on this! Green drinks are pure health&energy. I use a juicer instead of a blender and also really like beet+apple juice.

I normally get up around 7:15AM, if i sleep to 7:30 AM I feel as if I've had a few more hours, so that helps me to get up, during midday I just take a break from the computer and talk to someone in an active discussion to get the brain going...
    works for me

Coffee, chill music. Power nap is effective, but not for everyone. For me it is at times, but not really because it makes me lose my momentum. Taking mini breaks to talk a little or to stretch and rest my eyes from the computer.

I make sure I eat a number of smaller meals a day. I also drink plenty of water. So my energy levels are generally pretty good.

Midday energy is generally maintained by changing tasks and/or getting out and about and either going to the gym or going for a walk.

Another key strategy for me is to allot 'x' time to do a certain task/s if i'm feeling a little tired or uninspired (fortunately that isn't often)

So I might deliberately do more tasks in a smaller time frame to get me moving mentally.

The key for me is to have various alternatives and strategies to use to mix it up.

more than likely you are experiencing a massive vitamin and mineral deficiency.

i remember having low levels of energy and I started taking vitamin and mineral supplements with a highly nutritious breakfast and it eliminated the problem of low energy.

just as gas, oil, water is to the car so are vitamins and minerals to the body. as a matter of fact we have 90 essential nutrients that the body needs.

ask yourself out of that 90 how many are you getting and that may be the answer to your low energy levels.

I release myself from feeling any need that X must be done now and simply let

A mood that is reflected in the content i create...

  • Working long hours during the day really drains my energy and brain cells. So what I always do is to take at least 15-20 minute break after 2-3 hours of working. During breaks, I normally do stretches, a quick walk with my dog, or simply eat.

    Hi there

Sometimes you just need to listen to your body and take a break - especially if you are putting in long hours day in day out. The risk of burnout is very real if you keep 'soldiering on'. That said, oxygenating your body through taking in nice deep breaths of fresh air is a very effective way of boosting energy in the afternoon. Stick with regular (healthy) food breaks (small portions) throughout the day and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Coffee and sugar are counter-productive as they will give quick, short-lasting boosts of energy but will then create an energy slump, which will then make you crave more coffee and sugar - it is a vicious and unhealthy cycle.

    Good luck and good energy.
