How a $29 investment brought me to 1.8 mil /year

Why I'm writing this:

For the past five or six years I've read countless articles on warriorforum, many that have helped motivate me along my short e-commerce career. When I first started I enjoyed reading the success stories on here that proved to me it was possible to make real money. I've just sold five of my top earning websites so I thought it would be a good time to share mine. I hope I can provide some insight to readers about how I did it and how (at least in my case) it didn't take money to make money. What I did is very risky and may not be for everyone, but it worked for me.

Why I choose e-commerce:

Five years ago I graduated from college and was lost. I had a big life plan about how I would be my own boss, travel and be successful but I had NO CLUE how I was going to get there. I was working and making a decent salary but I spent every free moment looking for a way out, a way to make it on my own. I've always enjoyed reading business books and I had gotten myself a copy of The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris and this book really opened my eyes to what is possible in the world of e-commerce. I would recommend it to everyone and anyone, which is exactly what I did. I told one of my former college roommates (who had also gotten a job) that he had to read it. Once he did he was hooked as well. We decided we were going to start an e-commerce business together, and make it succeed.

How we started:

Myself and by business partner would meet at the local library every night after work with our laptops and plenty of paper to take notes. We began to try to find the perfect product to sell online. To meet our criteria that product had to be priced over $200, it could not be readily available to purchase locally for the average consumer and it had to be an item that already did huge numbers (sales and traffic) online. That's right, we WANTED competition.

We used ebays tools for tracking the hottest categories and we broke them down even further by checking "closed auctions". We found all the auctions that had ended and found that there were the same 10 or 12 products in one niche that ALWAYS sold. Usually at HIGH buy it now prices. We we're one step closer to opening our business.

Next we had to prove we could compete in terms of pricing. We were new to e-commerce and not aware of drop shipping so we went right to the source, China. Let me clarify... we went to alibaba dot com. We found many suppliers in China offering the exact products we wanted. We contacted them all, received price sheets and delivery estimates and learned that we could make a HUGE markup!

This is where it gotd tricky. A 20' container of our product cost about $20k (including customs clearance to the US an ocean freight charges).... we did not have $20k. What we did have was a strong belief that this could work. We had checked many competitors on ebay and tracked their proven sales, we had also researched websites that would be in competition and saw their popularity.

We didn't have money but we had an idea. We knew we could offer the SAME exact niche products that were being sold on ebay at a better price and we were confident if we listed them the sales would follow. Since our average product price was $1k it wouldn't take many sales to raise the $20k for the container from China. We went for it.

We created some very nice auction pages on ebay showcasing our products, letting customers know if they purchased there would be a 12 week lead time. We put up a yahoo store for $29 and directed many customer their to view the full product line. We also posted free ads on craigslist in big cities directing people to our website.

The result? We got our first sale the first night! For $529, of which about half was profit... too bad we couldn't see any REAL profit until we had the $20k to send to our supplier in China. Well, the sales just kept coming. The next day we had a sale for $2.4k... with many more to follow. Within 2 weeks we had raised enough money to pay for the goods. We sent a bank wire to China then waited for the merchandise. Everything arrived about 8 weeks later and our customer were thrilled. We now had a REAL business.

This was five years ago, since then a lot has changed. We learned about drop shipping, started selling for over 50 suppliers, built our 5 niche category websites and recently (about six months ago) sold them all off at a nice multiple.

Obviously what we did was and is EXTREMELY risky and could have resulted in complete failure but in our case IT WORKED! I wrote this article to show people that it really doesn't take money to make money... sometime it just involves taking the risk of a lifetime.

Here is where it got me:
2008 Sales: 680k
2009 Sales: 1.2m
2010 Sales: 1.8m
2011 Sales: Business was SOLD

We spent $29 the first month for our Yahoo store which was out of pocket. After that it was just reinvesting business profits. Hope this helps at least someone out there who is on the fence or discouraged about starting an online business. There is REAL money to be made and there are millions of buyers just waiting for you site to come along. You just have to do it.

Although I don't know why this person sold, I can understand selling a profitable business at its peak.

I sold my offline business after consistently growing it for 7 years because I wanted to get out while it was doing great and move on to other things.

We had a very nice offer presented to us by a competitor who's business we were taking.. and honestly after almost five years of working together myself and business partner were ready to part ways. The offer really came at exactly the right time. We were paid a nice multiple to basically leave the industry. We had to sign a five year non-compete as part of the deal.

Hey Kristie, That's what I always say!

I actually just read a quote from Richard Branson in the new Inc. magazine that I really like...

“Dream big by setting yourself seemingly impossible challenges. You then have to catch up with them.”

I sold off these websites in last December. Immediately after I took a few months to myself and didn't work on any new projects. I just relaxed, traveled and play A LOT of golf. Since then I have been learning about different ways to make money online and I have tried just about everything. I used what I learned from eCommerce and have applied it to opening Amazon affiliate stores (which I am seeing AMAZING results with), I continue to open more and more drop ship eCommerce stores as well as grow the ones that I still have in portfolio and I am doing pretty with CPA marketing (although I went through a HUGE learning curve and blew through a lot of cash when learning). I also am in the process of creating my blog but that's more for fun and connecting with other entrepreneurs...

    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6087391].message }}

    @Sumon2k7

At first ALL of our traffic was a combination of people that we referred from ebay (they would send us messages on our listings via ebay and we would respond with an answering including a link to our website and a coupon code that we made valid for 24 hours) and from free posts on craigslist. We basically made a "sales copy" for each of our items and would blast them on craigslist in all major cities every day.

We didn't have analytics installed at first so I'm not sure where the majority of traffic came from but If I had to guess I would say it was about 50/50 from those two sources for the first couple of months.

I didn't know anything about off page SEO when we first started but I quickly learned that if a product page URL included the manufacturers name, item name and item code that we would rank higher.. for example all of our product pages look liked: mysite.com/manufacturer-item-name-product-code.html[/url]

We also made unique product pages for each variation of every product that we offered and google took a liking to us even early on... we were near the top of the results page for many products just by doing on site SEO.

The thing that made the BIGGEST change in terms of traffic (and sales) was when we started submitting a daily product feed to google base (shopping). The leads are great in terms of conversions and it's free to be on there.

Other then that we tried some PPC advertising (adwords & amazon product ads)... the brought in traffic but conversions were low so we cut both off fairly quickly.

We never paid an SEO company but we did pay for some high PR backlinks for specific keywords. We also advertised on some industry blogs but that was all later on.

We did quite well... and yes, I did start a network of websites that sell social media likes and followers. I also started 5 adsense authority sites that have an average of 20k pages indexed by google (and growing). I'm making MUCH less then I am used to but I am now trying to make money online without shipping physical products. That has worked great for me in the past and I'm sure I'll eventually go back to it, but for now I want to see where adsense sites and social media selling can take me. I keep reading all of these horror stories about adsense accounts getting shut down on here so I have my fingers crossed that nothing happens to mine. I know it's risky but I have to admit it feels GREAT seeing the earnings go up throughout the day without doing any work...

Hi. I'm curious, why did you start selling facebook likes and all of that?
Didn't take more than 2 minutes to find better prices than yours, what's your USP?

I started selling facebook likes, twitter followers, youtube views and backlinks because these were all services that I had purchased while I owned all of my other e-commerce websites. I found them all to help my business and I wanted to try to get into the market to be able to sell to other business owners in a niche that I am familiar with. Things are going pretty well, I have consistent sales and most importantly my clients are all very satisfied. I know there are suppliers with lower pricing but that's true in any industry. I would never want to be the guy who only drives in sales only because he has the lowest pricing. You end up making no real profit and putting yourself out of business. I've seen this happen many times in the past in my main industry. My pricing is fair and my clients are very loyal, 80% of them come back to me for repeat purchases within 3 weeks of making their initial purchase. I doubt many of the low budget providers can say the same.

Great success story. I totally understand that it would be unethical to 'spill the beans' on the exact products or niche, but I have a question about drop shipping.

Do you believe that if you had just gone with drop shipping from the beginning, you would have made more money or made is sooner?

    Thanks!

If I knew what I know now we would have went with drop shipping from day one. The profit margin in my industry was about 25% on drop shipped orders (much less then the 60% we were making on importing) but the ease of running the business and scaling it makes it worth it. Once we started working with drop shippers we were able to process many more orders daily and bring our product catalog from 300 products to over 6,000. The one problem with starting with drop shippers is that many companies wont take you on a retailer unless you have a proven history. Even as a business doing over a million in sales we weren't able to get approved with some drop shippers because they were looking to work with companies that do 5mil+. However, this many only be true in my industry.

Great read, very inspirational for the newbies. Why is it so hard for people to believe you went from a company turning over 7 figures to where you are now.

I've done it & I know a few friends who have done it. If you've ever ran a business that turns over 7 figures, you know their is a lot more work & sometime's more stress involved then say running a not so profitable business.

It's all about what the individual wants, sure some people thrive on being busy & stressing meeting deadlines to make those millions BUT after a while less work, less stress for less pay? Seem's more attractive to your health & also especially if you have a family!

So good work alksense, keep up the encouraging work & good luck to your future ventures~!

Hey OP you said you were inspired by the 4HWW may I ask if you outsourced any or most of your business operations? As that is pretty much what the 4HWW is all about. I would like to do the same thing, but I would really like to outsource a lot of the day to day drag when it is up and running. Do you think this could be accomplished wit a digital product? i.e. a how to of some sort? If so what do you think you could do in order to best confirm demand as you did with your research on ebay?

    Thanks for the post!

I agree about physical products dominating internet sales. Since I've sold my big e-com sites I've started selling facebook likes, twitter followers, etc.. and I have multiple other projects including ones where I've built adsense authority sites that are getting TONS of traffic. The problem is the revenues & conversions are nowhere close to where I was at with physical products. I wanted (and still want to) venture away from physical products to eliminate the entire shipping process but the more it looks like I'm going to be back in that game very soon..

    @mobread

This business was very much inspired and ran by 4HWW principles, we outsourced almost everything after we had established the business. We had a call center that our 800#'s would fwd to. They would answer basic customer questions and take orders. If there was anything they weren't able to help the customer with they would e-mail us the customers contact info and question. We imported many containers but after the second one came to NY we never even saw another... we had them shipped from China to Long Beach, CA where we had a trucking company pick them up then bring them to a fulfillment center that we rented space in. Every time we had a an order we would send the item number to the fulfillment center and they would just ship it out for us. We didn't get it down to four hours of work per week, more like 10-15 but that's good enough for me!

As far as replicating the business with a digital product.. I would think it can be done but so far I am not having much luck. I currently own 10 different e-com sites (that sell digital products) and I am getting good traffic through my SEO but not converting enough to make it seem worth it. It very well may just be because I have a lot to learn about selling digital products but at this point it seems it was easier, at least for me, to convert visitors to buyers when selling a physical product.

I've tried to use ebay to find a digital products but it seems NONE convert well there. This is how I used ebay to find a digital product or service... go to ebay pulse, select specialty services, break it down to web & computer services, start checking different sub-categories. I always sort by price: "highest first" because I like selling expensive items. I also check off "completed listings". I'm seeing wayyy to many in "Red" (didn't sell). You want to see those prices lit up in green (SOLD). Then you might be on to something.

Alksense, thank you for this thread!

I have had minor success in buying products locally (used) and reselling on eBay for a profit. I think the choice of which niche to target is pretty important.

I would like to scale up my efforts, but in order to do that, I am going to need a regular supplier. Running around town to chase down product is not an efficient use of time!

    Some questions:

    1) would you use the eBay/Terapeak system to find which products to sell?

    2) would you describe how you would zero in on which physical products to sell?

    3) You recommended drop shipping in a previous post. Can you give some pointers on finding reliable and honest drop shippers? Possibly you can recommend a book, guide, or WSO on drop shipping?

I've never used Terapeak.. there was another program that ebay that had cost about $5 for 3 days of use back when I started. I think Terapeak basically replaced that tool but since I haven't personally used it I cant recommend it.

A good way to use ebay for research (without spending any $$$) is to go through different categories and check off "completed listings", "from top rated sellers" and "Buy it Now" to filter the search results. Look for specific items that are in GREEN (meaning they sold). You will see a lot of sellers have 20+ BIN auctions per day and sometime only sell one product. You want to identify a product with a much better ratio of SOLD completed listings. Once you find that one "hot product" check what else the seller has listed in his ebay store, then check completed sales for those items. You can compile your list of products for a specific niche this way and then start looking for suppliers.

I've read a lot of business books, I'd say the one that helped me the most in The Four Hour Work Week and I would recommend that if you haven't read it. It's not about drop-shipping but it does briefly cover it. You don't need to purchase a WSO about drop shipping.. I honestly think it would be a waste of money.

Here's is what you do once you identify your product/niche; go on ebay and find the top rated stores that carry the products you want to sell. Contact them directly via e-mail/e-bay messages with a generic message that you write up. The message should be a brief introduction of yourself and your company to the seller. Tell them that your company currently owns (or owned) multiple e-commerce websites, that you have years of experience with SEO and popular product searching engines and that yourself and your team have been researching their niche for sometime now and you are confident that you will have great success in obtaining rankings for popular niche keywords. Tell them your team is currently building a new website focusing on their product niche and you are looking for suppliers. (obvioulsy you don't have to lie if you don't want to but I find the suppliers are MUCH more likely to work with you if you tell them you're established rather then just starting out and looking for products to sell). In the e-mail ask them if they can offer you wholesale pricing and ask if they have a wholesale price list (many of these big time ebay sellers already have wholesale price lists, others may just tell you take 25% off all item prices). It's really that easy.... That's how I started obtaining drop shippers and I probably had four or five pricelists... We gave the most business to the sellers with the best pricing but it was great to have back ups in case someone else ran out of stock.

Another way to get drop shippers is to google your product niche, go to the top e-commerce websites. Many of them have a "shop by brand" or "shop by manufacturer" section. Google every manufacturer and send them your generic e-mail about yourself and your team being involved in the niche. At first you may not get approved everywhere because a lot of bigger drop shippers want to see that you have established traffic, but you will get approved for some at first, and it will be enough to build your rankings and make $$$. Later on the down the line the bigger drop shippers will take you on as well. I've obtained over 50 drop shippers this way.

Obtaining the drop shippers is the easy part.. the hard part is identifying a niche. I'm getting back into e-com now and I spent the past week doing research on ebay. I have a few ideas but nothing is really standing out. My advice is take the time identifying a great niche before jumping in. Once you find that, you're money (as vince vaughn would say).

awesome and inspiring story. I think your decision to sell the business were the right decision. The same business over 5 years.... dropshipping has been flourishing like mushroom in the rainy season total world sales surely increased but divided into more people means the slices getting thin and more thinner

Alsense, thank you for that answer! That's a great idea for finding a drop shipper on eBay!

Would that work for selling on eBay as well?

Thank you for the 2nd idea for finding a drop shipper as well.

I'm pretty good at consistently getting top dollar for my auctions (lots of little tricks added together = top dollar). For example, in one niche that I was selling used items I obtained locally, I would get about 10% or more for the same item other sellers were getting, and this is for an item that was over $1000 at final value, so it really added up.

Selling new product would be different I think, but I have seen some niches with inefficient selling that I might be able to work with.

I had in mind starting with eBay to sell product, but also setting up an eCommerce site. Starting out on eBay and using a dropshipper is why I asked if finding that same dropshipper via eBay would work, since I would be competing with their eBay listings directly.

SEO right now is pretty tricky with the penguin update. In my case, I can honestly say I have years of SEO, and I believe that building my business completely on SEO is a bad idea. I have some other methods for driving traffic, so at least here, I would not be competing with the dropshipper's eBay auctions directly.

For finding niches, I use the method you describe. I went ahead and subscribed to Terapeak, and while there is much more data (and I found some niches I would have never have thought of), they don't make it easy to find niches. I would have thought they would allow me to search based on metrics alone, but they don't.

Possibly the system is set up like this on purpose, otherwise all terapeak subscribers would all zero in on the same thing. As it is, you have to hunt through categories to find stuff off the beaten path. They show "hot items", and its what you would expect to find: mostly iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and android tablet computers. I don't want to sell these, as I already know there is no margin and too much competition. Also I hear eBay scrutinizes these auctions much more than average, so its easier to get slapped by eBay or Paypal.

I will dig out my FHWW again and go through it again, thanks for the reminder.

    This is an awesome post.

Too many people are focused on digital products in crowded niches that barely sell, while ignoring physical products completely.

I know I've done the same mistake, I need to start investigating drop shipping and e-commerce.

    Hey everyone,

I started this thread about seven months ago which explains how I started my first online business and turned $29 into $1.8mil in hopes that it would motivate some people. I received A LOT of great feedback. Many people were sending me PMs asking if I could offer private coaching or if I was going to release a WSO for them to purchase.

Well, I'm still not doing either of those things BUT I did start a free blog that outlines the steps I took and still take when starting eCommerce websites. It also explains other types of internet marketing that I have been involved with since I sold my first batch of websites.

Here is the link if anyone is interested:

Best of luck to everyone out there. Keep learning and keep focused and you will all find success. If anyone has any questions I'd be glad to help.

      That's the TRUTH!

It's all about how you see things. If you make it difficult and think that it is impossible to make money online then it will be.

If you believe that you can make it and do not overcomplicate things then you will be successful. All you have to do is find out what those who are already are successful are doing and duplicate it.
