True purpose of life (Finally discovered by me..)

After watching a video on youtube, I was inspired to write this email to one of my friend. Instead I'm posting it here to share my discovery with all of you.

I've been trying to figure out the things that are truly important in our life - things that matter the most above success, happiness, money, sex, comfort - those subtle elements of life that makes it worth living.

Things that you need to accomplish so that we could die a happy person any given day. I'm planning to write a book on this, if you have any imput I'll be glad to consider it.

Here's a short version of a video:

(Backstory: Randy Paush was a professor in MC University - who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told that we would only live for 3-6 months.

He made a famous speech called 'the last lecture' where he tells his realizations about life - and what actually matters to live a fulfilling life that he learnt during this turn of events.)

Longer video :

Here's what I've learnt about living a fulfilled life.. from everything I've read/heard till date including Randy's revelations that I discovered today ..

Elements of living Fulfilled Life, Things that matter the most in our lives :

1. Your passion: Find & Pursue your passion as much as you can

2. Your contribution : Contribute as much as you can helping others in whichever way you choose

3. Life partner : Find that someone, who's happiness matters more than yours

4. Your children : Be prepared to do as much as possible for your children - that will remain your greatest source of joy in your entire life.

Also remember;

5. Earning respect, love, trust and friendship of your closed ones is far greater than any awards and accolades

6. Death is your greatest motivator - You're only going to regret things you've not done, chnaces you've not taken. So do more, take chances with life and listen to your heart.

(Any one or more of these can make your life fulfilled, I hope you find all of them!)

I hope you guys find some closure about life, just like I did today. I believe Life is an ongoing process learning and unlearning new dimensions about life everyday..

I agree not totally though "follow your heart" is common but does it bring desired results. Your heart's desires can be anything but upright and straightforward. I think instead you should follow your conscience.

      Hi there
I understand what you are saying here, although is it not a misplacement of the source here, people thinking it is their hearts desire
because it is guided by their emotions.

I feel my conscience is more related to heart than head, if we are talking about a natural or spiritual conscience rather than a conditioned one.

There is very interesting science about the extent of the hearts intelligence

Sometimes you need to do things that you don't want to do and it might not be your passion in order to find success.

There is a lot to be said about being passionate about what you do but sometimes your passion may not be easily monetised.

I completely agree with you here. There are two things that I love to do and I have yet to find a way to successfully make a full time living. I'm trying really hard not to give up. Times have been very difficult. I've done many things I just don't like doing and it's made me miserable. At least I can work hard doing something I enjoy. Hopefully it pays off in the end.

Yes to be wealthy in spirit is the greatest wealth, the kind that remains with one.
I am so happy to hear you will be writing your own book, from what you have said,
I feel you will find it very rewarding.
I see great skill and even genius in what you have creatively distilled from those classic books. However in seeing the heart and character you have shown in your posts,
I would love to see you manifest your own.

    Hello,
With respect to input...I think that when you are young and are told that you can be anything you want to be it is probably true. Eventually you start to realize what you are best cut out for and what you are least cut out for. Like in terms of sports, there are many people who don't have a chance of being a professional athlete - and that is fine. On the other hand, some may not be cut out to be a doctor or scientist (anything involving high level mathematics, biology or chemistry, for instance). So I think it is as much about finding what you are passionate about, but also must involve what you have the highest probability of succeeding at considering your aptitude and what you are naturally good at. My point is that the earlier you choose the best path possible for yourself, one that sets you up for success as much as possible, then the earlier you can focus on what you were put on the planet to really do in your lifetime. Sure you may end up on a slightly different path than originally intended, but that is fine, too. So herein lies another important point - taking action. Brute, I am sure you can speak on this topic since I see you being very active here in the IM community.

Hm, other than that, the way I see it is that I am just passing through this life, and the things that I hope to be able to take with me are precious memories of great experiences and people in my life. Significant sums of money can assist in this pursuit, and so can integrity, determination and kindness.

    Many blessings,
    -Timothy aka Ricky Tango

"We don't beat the reaper by living longer.
We beat the reaper by living well."

That's pretty cool. And coming from a guy that appreciates life the way only a terminal person can, that's pretty profound. Certainly worth remembering.

Great motivational speech! We all need one from time to time to remember the things we do have and learn to appreciate life at its true value and not think about what we don't have. Always focus on the positive things in life and always ask yourself what will be left of you and your work if the next day you will cease to exist.

Love this post, thank you for sharing the videos!

I feel that the contribution section of the list should be further expanded into charitable contribution, specifically. Yes, what we contribute in our legacy in terms of our work is very important. But so is contributing to those who could never repay our efforts.

I have to disagree with this statement because while a natural aptitude or ability certainly helps there are many people who, with enough determination and resilience, can learn just about any skill and succeed in most things. Obviously if success in a vocation is determined by a physical trait, like height and basketball for example, that isn't something that can really be overcome. But anything that is not reliant on physical attributes can certainly be accomplished. If I had not been extremely lazy in my chemistry and biology classes in college, I certainly could have pursued science or medicine. But I am passionate about neither, so I didn't pursue them. It's not because I'm not intelligent or apt.

I like the Kabalarians philosophy or concept called birthpath. The real you is your inner purpose. When you took your first breath of life, you became a living being. The time of birth determines the quality of the power within you and reveals your purpose in life. The purpose indicated by the birthpath consists of qualities to be developed through one's thinking, the ideals to be accomplished, and success to be made.

I think that the purpose of life is to live life to the fullest, add value to the life of the world and love every minute of it. If life was a dot I would still live to the fullest, add value to others. We all live in the now, now, work is also part of the now, do you want to dance more, surf more and end up living on the streets with no food to eat. You can have all the fun you want now, work at a job you love and when it is time to dance and surf do it with gusto.

  • I really liked the six elements of the true purpose of life. Those are all very practical and valuable observations that go to the heart of the matter.

I appreciate this far reaching and meaningful post. Thank you.
