Sitting Is Killing You Slowly...

Hi!

I also wrote a short article here on how I'll attack it. Bottom line, I just don't want to neglect the medical and scientific facts about sitting beyond what's necessary.

Just a reminder especially for Internet Marketers here who consume at least 6 hours of internet... Most often than not, you're also doing it on a chair. Let me point out some facts.
• Sitting 6+ hours a day makes you up to 40% likelier to die within 15 years than someone who sits less than 3. Even if you exercise.
• Average Physical Activity (Waking Hours)
- Sedentary (Inactivity such as sitting) – 9.3 hours per day
- Low-Intensity Physical Activity (Walking, Standing) – 6.5 hours/day
- Medium-Vigorous Strenuous Physical Activity (Running, Sports) – 0.7 hours/day

Studies show that only reducing sitting time helps. But how can sitting kill?
• Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours per day than thin people
• 1 in 3 Americans is obese
• Between 1980 and 2000
- Exercise rates stayed the same
- Sitting time increased 8%
- Obesity doubled
• Sitting expends almost no energy

Perhaps you can also do something about it.

maybe not using the law of attraction to find the closest parking spot ..will help you to..

i think there is more to it than just the sitting ..as if your sitting and snacking/drinking soda .. it might tilt things away from just sitting being the problem .

couple sitting with stress producong activities ..snacking ..and bad diet in general ..and you have a soup of death..

and if your sitting more and eating a diet for people moving around .. messes you up

These are well presented facts and good points, but there are many factors at play here. On the site you linked it seemed like the pictures/facts were promoting a fearful outlook instead of one that can help. Nevertheless, it is good to be aware of our habits and change them when necessary to improve our health. Just take facts and things you read with a grain of salt.

      Hi Logistics2!

You're right! That was also my reaction to that Infographics as provided by Medical Billing And Coding (below the Infographics). Maybe that was their intention.

If I were to redo it, I'll present it more positively. But anyways, interpreting the facts positively is more important than just sitting at it without doing a thing. : )

      Thanks!

      Hi Michael!

I'm also doing it more often now. If there's science in it, I would spare myself from digging more into it. It'd just add up to the hours of sitting. They've done that and all I have to do is interrupt the sitting by simply standing.

      Thanks!

        Popmarco,

My problem is that I have a day job that requires me to sit constantly. For that reason alone, I am making plans to chuck that day job and get another profession/job. I am not going to take years off of my life just to please the Big Boss Man.

          Hello write27!

I do have a day job and it's sitting is a requirement esp. on meetings. Whenever those meetings drag, then the more that I'm required to sit that long. Whichever the tasks are, sitting may just be unavoidable. Interrupting it by standing to comfort and to drink some water can be helpful. I'll definitely change my sitting habits because of these facts.

          Thanks!

i didn't respond to make it sound like sitting was good .. the problem is if you take out all the other factors and assume sitting is the silver bullet . i know personally the negative health effects of to much inactivity ..

but also it seems everything is killing you ..

you know everyone in america at leasts has teflon built up in their systems from the teflon cookware .. so of course everyone in the us who get cancer has teflon in their systems.. so teflon is cancer causing .

there are many factors than just the sitting and the sitting is probably a result of other factors ..

      Hi Odahh!

I'll agree with that. There are just so many factors that can kill us and it's not just this sitting thing. It's just it's one of the things that struck me since I'm always sitting esp. doing the IM thing. Just thought of sharing the facts seemingly gathered and studied by others.

      Thanks!

It's funny that this has just been brought up. I just read in Reader's Digest (Feb Issue) that, "People who take the most standing breaks throughout the day- even as short as a minute- have slimmer waists, lower cholesterol, and better insulin response than those who take the fewest, regardless of how much other exercise they get."

Who would have ever thought that being an Internet marketer was such a dangerous occupation?

    Thank you for this Popmarco!

I will get a little weird in this response ..but i fully understand why sitting long periods of time can be bad.. as a gamer .. i have many extended periods sitting ..but why sitting at a computer for long periods is even worse than sitting on a couch ..

observe your posture as you type and work on your computer ..and just note how cut of your circulation gets ..long periods of time with bad circulation..and shallow pinched off breathing ..while your lower spine gets compressed over time and leads to back problems ..

coupled with probable dehydration as you drink coffee / or other caffein beverages instead of water ..so yoiu cells are not getting the fluid they need to remove toxins from your system..and your blood isn't circulating properly ..so your cell are building up toxins.. so your energy level suffers ..

which means you eat more to hope to get more energy or turn to more coffee and even terrible for your body energy drinks ..

      Hi Imwendy!

That was also my intention. As Odahh pointed out, there could be a lot of factors to bring us to the end of life faster than we could expect. It's just that probably we can do something about those things that are inevitable and probably, they could give us a few more years of "extension".

You're welcome and thanks as well!

Yep, that's a great way to start - move. Whenever I'd sense that I'm spending those long hours, then I just have to take a hard stop and move.

      Hi Mark!

That's probably because IM is really an exciting job that one would want to accomplish things in the next few hours. In writing articles alone, sometimes I'd spend a couple of hours for research (and other distractions) before I can hit Publish. Other tasks are more interesting that you wouldn't want to stand up until you're done. That could explain the additional 30lbs esp. if you forego the 1-hr opportunity to exercise (I'm guilty of this!).

Yep, I saw it, but I'm not sure if I can stand for 3 hours straight. Maybe we just have to start by interrupting the sitting position by doing something else that doesn't require sitting.

      Thanks!

Getting a good chair and maintaining solid posture while sitting is also important.

Invest in a good chair and keep your back and neck straight and you'll negate some of the negative effects of sitting in a chair for long periods of time.

It doesn't matter how many times you tell people that sitting is killing them - people refuse to change, they go on right ahead and continue sitting 8+ hours a day. For me it's hard to work standing up since I ride a bicycle and combining that with working standing up is a lot of strain. Plus I find that I'm able to get a lot more finished while sitting down. Trying to mix it up.

It seems to me that, first you come up in a decision and then try to prove that with logic. Sorry to say that I could not agree with your points. A know, lot of people has to take desk job and they need to seat more than 8 hours a day. They live almost full span of life even more than the country's average age. Sitting much time is not good habit but it is not directly associated with dead.

As a personal trainer point of view we need to get physically more active. Also the nutrition part is very important when it comes down to healthy lifestyle.

If you exercise daily, and have the wrong nutrition program in your daily eating, your health is going to be affected one way or another.

Nutrition and exercises go together. You cannot separate them.

I hope that helps a little bit.

Sitting is bad for slouching too, but that's not the main victim. Lordosis(also known as sway-back or anterior pelvic tilt) is caused by tight hip flexors, it looks a little like this

It causes the gut to protrude and the bottom to look much much bigger than it really is, even though it's just a postural imbalance.

When sitting, your hip flexors are shortened for long periods of time. Your muscles range of motion is controlled by your central nervous system, so if you don't use it fully, your CNS stops you from being able to do it, when you have tight hip flexors, it disables your glutes from contracting properly meaning that when your body realises that your glutes can't meet the demands, it calls in the muscles around it to take up the workload. This tends to be the lower back, which in turn leads of spinal erectors and chronic back pain, especially in elders.

It's also the no 1 cause for athletic mediocrity too, but that's a lecture for another forum

Sorry for the lecture, but tight hip flexors plagues a lot of people and they don't even realise it, so get up!

Well I mean, if you exercise vigorously for 3 hours daily, you can sit the other 13 hours of the day and be fine. The problem just sprouts from lack of energy expenditure and high calorie consumption. Our society promotes a sedentary lifestyle.
