If 99% of IMers fail - this is GREAT news!

Confused? Let me explain...

I often hear that 99% of Internet Marketers/businesses fail.

In real terms what does that mean? Well if you're in a seminar with a 100 people - only 1 person in that room will succeed online (statistically). When you think about that it's pretty daunting. At least that's what I thought at first.

I just couldn't believe that a humble person like me (working class boy from the UK) could break through the barrier and become the 1% who makes a successful living online. But that all changed when I turned the statistics on it's head...

I realised that if only 1% of IMers succeed online then surely that means there is less competition at the top right? Think about it...

If I throw in the towel like the rest of the 99% than life becomes much harder. I am fighting the 99% looking for a 9-5 job, I am fighting the 99% driving to work everyday during rush hour, I am fighting the 99% looking for a pay rise or protecting my measly pension. Basically life for the 99ers is a struggle.

I see IM as a metaphor for climbing a mountain. I can see where I am going and from where I'm standing I know it's a tough climb. 99% of us at base camp won't make it. But when I reach the top I know I will be one of the very few who persevered along the mountain trek, overcame every obstacle and reached my dream - the top of the mountain. And at that moment I know I will be on the top of the world.

IM isn't easy but if you find a method you're comfortable with then keep on going. Like Buddha said, "If you're facing in the right direction - keep walking...".

After a many years of trial and error I am finally making money online.

T Harv Eker once said, "There are no problems in life, just problems in your mind". Breakdown those mental barriers and proceed onto the greatest journey you will ever take.

And if you're are wondering why I think 99% of newbies fail online. It's simple. Most people give up at the first hurdle.

Don't stand still and keep moving forwards. Success is waiting for you.

1% is a small number but when you look at it closely it's limitless. There are no boundaries for the 1% who succeed online. And I'm not even talking about millions here. I'm sure $10,000 a month would change most lives on WF.

So go explore, go dream, go discover...

There's a thread on the mindwarriors somewhere about inspirational quotes...I think your posting would fit nicely there!....Thanks, and I think the 99% who fail in IM indeed do so, not because they can't do it, but because they give up. I find IM more challenging than any office job I ever had (and therefore more fun), but that's all the more reason to do it...
The funny thing is that for me, failure is not even an option anymore...couldn't go back to working in an office anymore. And you're right: if 99% does fail/give up, this does create a lot of room for those that don't.

An excellent perspective! This is a perfect way to see the challenge of IM as the glass being half full, not half empty. I think most people fail either because they quit at the first hurdle, or never really start to begin with.

    Congratulations on your own successes.

Great thought! This way of thinking helps a lot to just keep going even if the circumstances would seem to suggest otherwise at times. For me, the comfort in this way of thinking lies in the fact that the really tough times of the upward climbing are just temporary.

In fact, everything is temporary. So after enjoying your view from the top, get ready to do some more hiking!

    This is an awesome perspective.

The 99 percent will fail and leave a lot more for the rest of us. Much better than half of us succeeding because there'd be less money at the top for us.

Thanks for sharing your experience Smodha... but the percentage you gave is a little lower... I dare to say that 100% marketers fail... at least once.

Remember that the failures help you become better (person, marketer, etc.)... An experienced marketer has faced defeat a lot of times.

As R. Kiyosaki and D. Trump say in their book "the midas touch", it's all about the feedback. People tend to feel down when something doesn't turn as they expect, and that's it they go back to their "normal" live and wake up from the dream of making money online... They don't know how to deal with the feedback... Feedback is vital information that the market gives you to improve your offer!!

But people like you or like me are different... We are not going to surrender until we make it, Aren't we? And we know that even though sometimes is hard to lose money or fail, every defeat brings along a lot of information with itself called "experience"

Right on! The problem like you stated above though is people automatically assume they are part of that 99% rather than the 1%. Alot of them have mentally quit before they have even begun. Maybe if they looked at it like you have stated above it would change their mind.

Great post. I think most people (newbies) think that making money online is easy, and that all the people who are at the top got there by using "fast and easy automated system"s which is why they give up when things get a little more complicated than pushing a button

    Good stuff!

Yea, I noticed with most new entrepreneurs, the 'failure' rate is unbelievably highly largely because they aren't willing to persist. They aren't willing to do what it takes to face their fears and move forward. This is what really sets successful people apart from those who give up.

Successful people are willing to fail. So are you?

Great post! As a newbie, I have found these first few months of dipping my toes in the IM waters to be incredibly challenging, and I must admit that on more than one occasion I have been tempted to throw in the towel and return to the corporate grind (oh parish the thought)! But, the lifestyle I have created for myself since leaving the 9-5 world (which was really more like 8:30-6:30), has been so incredibly enjoyable that returning to the corporate cube just isn't an option - I know I just need to be among the 1 percent that makes it in this business.

Hi, I like the post and the metaphor I would like to point out another similarity you might have overlooked...

The base of the mountain is much bigger and wider than at the top, what means that at the bottom is more space than at the top. Yes at the bottom there will thus be more more competition but also a wider ground to cover...

      Just an observation....

    Very true post.

Most IMers do fail, because as well as focus or belief, they lack another vital component...

    Work ethic.

    Be prepared to work hard.
Be prepared for setbacks and hard knocks.
Be prepared to come back working harder.

It's what makes the 1% into the 1%

  • I see that a lot of people in this thread are successful. Congrats to all of you. I think learning the ability to persist is key.

The important think we have to have control of is emotional mastery. Our emotions determine how effective we'll be at our work.

If you're feeling motivated or inspired, you're going to get a lot of successful work. You're efforts aren't in vain.

But when you feel frustrated and you try to work hard, guess what? You'll struggle and that leads to ineffective action.

So all in all, my point is, successful entrepreneurs have a high degree of emotional mastery.

They don't even need to think about it because it just comes automatically to them.

I think most IMers fail is because they don't see results fast.

They want people to start clicking on their ads, buying through their referral link or buying their own product the day they start.

They read about the IMers earning thousands each month and are extremely put off once they realise it actually takes time and work.

Internet Marketing is not some magical get rich quick scheme.

Stay focused, be persistent. And most of all, WORK SMART NOT HARD.

I guess most people think there is more competition at the top then at the bottom. This is a product of negative conditioning (herd mentality). But if you look closely the competition is at the bottom (the 99%).

There is no such thing 99% IMers fails, in my opinion...

We are humans - we fail all the time. Computers also fail. You don't like your pc when your browser crashes right? PC fails.

When I started, I've been scared of competition. But we are talking about IMers. INTERNET Marketers. It's a business right. You don't need build restaurant near McDonald's. Internet is sooo big, competition is big yeah , but like fellow member of this forum told me - If there are people who doing same stuff as you do, this is awesome - you know your method works. Now this is your time to be smarter - tweak your method and bank hard.

If you start thinking deeply about competition - it's just a good reason to stop working. Be organized, be motivated, finish read all tutorials - don't put few away, always think that you're smarter than everybody else, and WORK HARD, VERY HARD. ( Remember IM is business, not a job in customer support company 9-5. )

P.S. If you're new in IM. Don't even think what you could done in the last 10-15 years. In the last 10 years you could do even more in your offline life. Be smart and think one step in the future.

It must be a high figure because why else is Make Money Online such a big niche? It's a residual market like Weight Loss. You have a problem/need and you buy a product. You give up after a few days/weeks and go out and buy the next product.

^^^ while I agree with you Bill on the inaccuracy of the statistics, I think the essence of this percentage is simply an indication of how not everyone makes money through IM.
