"How many times you have failed in life?"

    More than I could count!

But it's more about what you do after your failure than how many times you failed that really matters.

One lesson I got from my mentor, and one that really beats the scaredy cat out of me when taking risks, is this:
If you're going to experience failure, you better get the best out of it.
You choose ether to become bitter or better after that.

I have never failed. I have found a LOT of ways that certain things won't work. Each one has been a learning curve but not a failure.
Edison failed more than 1000 times before his successes...as did many other successful people, both past and present.

If you haven't failed, you haven't tried hard enough. When you stretch your boundaries, you end up doing things you've never done before.

If you don't have experience in a certain area, it is difficult to get a perfect result the first time.

As Vienn points out above, the important thing is what you do after a failure that counts. You can make a failure a very positive thing.

My philosophy is this: The only time you fail is when you stop trying, when you give up completely.

Not hitting a goal, not making something work, a relationship going bad, not passing a test... these are just signs that you have room to grow, room to improve.

Deciding not to grow and improve, and just giving up, well that's failure to me.

Choosing to go down a different road when something isn't working how you want it, and pursuing it with focus and dedication, isn't failure it's life, it's how we get experience, how we learn, and how we grow.

If you dismiss the things that do not matter; if you remove those things from your mind and focus on what must be done; if you understand that your time is limited and decide to work now; only then will you be able to get to the finish line.

Yes, failure will never exist if you keep trying.

My former boss, a very successful business person, keep saying to his employees: "Failure is not an option." He applied this mindset to all of his employees. Therefor, his projects are very rarely fail.

If you tell yourself that failure is not an option, you'll keep struggling, push yourself hard, until you succeed.

You know the number is uncountable if you consider not getting your desired result as failure. But if I consider a failure nothing but find out another way that does not works will reduce the amount of failure to zero! So, this depends on how you react to a certain result.

I failed countless times in my whole life till today, but I never lost my courage and self confident. I overcame the miserable situations and tried my best for the next just because, I never hang up and frustrated for the failed work.
In my opinion, that's the best way to go.

That is really hard to say because each failure in my life was a stepping stone and learning point in continuing on until I had success. So I can say never, really.

What I do like to say to myself when I've discovered a failing method is this, "Terra, you're a freakin' genius! You've just discovered yet another thing not to do!"

Humor gives me the ability to continue on rather than pouting and lamenting over a failed attempt.

To fail in life should not be a thing to fear about, when i fail i make sure i track what cause the failure and do it the right way, if you are afraid of failure you will never make any progress in life, there is no perfection in human being never think you can do anything perfect all the time, when i fail i learn my mistake and correct it, this help me to know better and come out with the best result.

Failure has a permanence to it.

Temporary setbacks is what I term most things. There are very few things, these days, that I try to do that I don't complete or accomplish. Why? Not because I am the greatest human being/genius since Archimedes (I think he was probably the 1 or 2 greatest intellects of all time, but I digress); it's because I have learned to use patience to my advantage, I study things incisively before I get into them (this includes setting up my Gold's gym pull up bar, or my wife's computer table, which took me 3 hours), but never the less, I always know what I am getting myself into AND since I know what I am up against, I know how much time i should commit to it, how much money I should invest into something, before I pull the plug and try it differently.

You try, you evaluate, you learn, you succeed (eventually).

Please remember, everything has its own timeframe. Somethings need to be stopped and restarted, or just scrapped.

Failure is when you stop trying.

Don't ever stop thinking, evaluating, and trying.

    Warmest Regards,

    - John Tzor (JT)

Failing in life...that is a bit harsh. I believe we all make mistakes because it is bound to happen. When I went through a divorce I thought it was all my fault. It turns out a bit later after I calmed my mind and got back on track with things that I loved and was passionate about I ran into my now fiance. We have had a child and I would have never had my daughter if my divorce hadn't taken place. You never know what life will hold around the corner from you until you get there. Keep your head up, do what you love and are passionate about and get excited.

I find it inspiring that this thread didn't turn into one in which people moan about how they failed and how many times and how their lives went downhill after that.... Instead most people here refuse to see setbacks as failures but as a learning. That fits in with my philosophy exactly:

There is no such thing as failure - only feedback.

And folks - that's the kind of attitude that set Walt Disney, Edison and Henry Ford apart from the crowd.

  • Well it's all dependent on your perception.

Instead of thinking about failing or succeeding - think of learning and growing.
There's no such thing as failure or success - it's all man-made.

There is only learning and growing. Every situation, every issue, problem, challenge, victory, win, whatever - is just another phase in the never-ending learning and growth process.

If your focus is nothing more than just the continuous and consistent growth of yourself and contribution to the others around you, then petty things like failure or success are beneath you.

My obsessions: the point is not how many times you fall flat, but rather you always get up afterwards.

I'd be in a trouble if I need to count these occassions in my life. And yes, these were experiences - I'd say necessary experiences - to help me to learn what to avoid next time.

Without experiences you can not develop your life, relationships and business. And as someone said above: there is a room to develop always. So, this is a dead-long process.

      Have a nice weekend,

When a baby tries to walk, then falls down, is that failure? Only if it stops trying. But they keep trying until they succeed. Persistence. That's why we all walk on 2 feet.

Too bad that attitude leaves people when they grow up.

A lot of times - countless. I wish I was perfect but I am not so here is what I do when failures arise in my life.

    1. Learn from the mistake - benchmark on it until success is at hand.
    2. Re-organize and check goals lists and take action on the goals that are at reach.
    3. Stand and respond accordingly, self- pity will not get you anywhere.
    4. Find inspiration in your life. A little perspective from someone is a good start.

It's quite simple - first I lay down for a bit composing myself so I can lock the event in the drawer later, then I stand up, shake off the dust and keep moving. There's not actually anything else to do in those moments. You can either stay deep down feeling sorry for yourself, or you can learn something, stand up and continue.

Counting today. or just up to today?

I have failed so many times it would break my calculator to add them all up. I do not care though because I have succeeded enough to overcome those failures.

Here is a baseball analogy. Ted Williams is often considered the greatest hitter of all time. His lifetime batting average is .344. That means that out of 100 at bats he failed to get on base .656% of the time. In other words he failed over 65% of the time.

There is hope for all of us in life if we could just be the Ted Williams of our own Internet businesses.
