"It's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world"
The movie had a great impact on me when I was a teenager. And I can still feel its influence. I talked to many about the movie, and every person interprets it differently and see it in a certain light.
For me it was a revelation. It was the story of a guy who re-took control of his life and started enjoying it. After many years of numbness. How many people, of all ages, don't live in that numbness that the screenwriters called "already dead"? And how hard is it to get out of that state?
It's both very hard and very easy. It only takes a few small steps, but the difficulty is to get your ass off the couch and take those steps. It's the incredible force of the comfort zone.
So Lester Burnham, beautifully played by Mr. Spacey, wakes up and starts living again and he loves every minute of it, although his daughter, wife and everyone else think he's gone mad. (And I love the ending when he has a smile on his face)
It made me think: of course, it's possible. You can change your life if you're not happy with it. All you have to do is do something about it. And that stuck with me over the years.
There are so many other things I love about American Beauty. The quote I mentioned in the title is one of them. Whenever I feel sad or discouraged or I'm just having a bad day, I go for a long walk. Through a park, on the streets, wherever. And I look around. At the trees, at the people, at nature and life. It's one of the best therapies I know.
Just wanted to share these thoughts with you. Do you maybe like American Beauty as much as I do, or have a movie that had a great influence on you?
Thanks for reading!
