Is It Okay to Give Up?

Most people seem to believe that you should 'never ever give up'. In fact, I have three quotes here from respected personalities...

1. "Never, never, never give up!" ~ Winston Churchill

2. "Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

3. "Never consider the possibility of failure; as long as you persist, you will be successful." ~ Brian Tracy

4. "When you feel like giving up, remember why you held on for so long in the first place." ~ Unknown

Much as I have enormous respect for Winston Churchill, Brian Tracy and Ralph Waldo Emerson, I don't agree with their statements above.

I have sometimes given up and the decision saved me pain, loss of money and dignity.

I am just wondering, is there anyone else who thinks under certain circumstances one should give up?

  • It depends on what you are giving up on,

If you are giving up on the ability to make money online in general, maybe that isn't the best decision unless you absolutely know it isn't for you.

If it is just a particular project, then sometimes it is 'okay' to give up, or 'take a break' at the least. You cannot finish everything and make a profit on every project, learning when to cut your losses is actually a profitable trait.

Going through pain/loss happens to be a milestone for most internet marketers, I know it sounds harsh but it is very true.

    Good luck bud!

I think it is the words "Give up" that should probably be revised.

Sometimes I go down a certain route only to find that I have taken a wrong path and it is not the right route to take and if I continue down it I will either lose money or something else negative will happen. So in this situation would me changing path be seen as me "giving up" or would it be seen as me using my common sense and making an educated choose to change path?

Being stuborn and sticking with something that is not working in the name of "not giving up" is a fast way to heart ache and failure.

So while I understand the core of "not giving up" I think clarificatin needs to be made and it needs to be put into context.

It all depends upon what exactly you are giving up on, or that is "quitting". Have you failed along the lines of trying a certain path to get to your successful future and find that you should quit it? Have you found a certain technique to not work for you? Have you been in a job, position, or partnership with someone who is not giving you what you know you deserve or have earned? These are all things that you should give up on.

But, give up on your dreams? Your own goals? Your financial aspirations? Never!

    Hey Abugah,

Thanks for reminding of those quotes...I love 3 of them and use 2 regularly....

The answer to your question is....

    ... absolutely NOT!

If you are considering your future, then just take time to re-focus.

My all time favourite quote is by Confucius:

" It doesn't matter how fast you go, as long as you do not stop "

Mr. Einstein defined "insanity" as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Doesn't that encourage giving up?

If you 'give up' because you get a better idea on how to get the results, or you 'give up' because the results simply aren't relevant to you anymore, that's okay.

If you simply stop because it's more comfortable not to put the effort in anymore, if you'd still like to get the results but you settle for less, than it's probably not okay. It doesn't make you insane, but it will probably make you frustrated.

    • One author I remember from a few years ago put it very well: he said that there's a difference between being persistent and being stupid.

If you are trying to break through a wall, and the wall doesn't yield when you bang your head against it, you should certainly give up on banging your head against it. That doesn't mean you can't find a different way of breaking the wall.

I think there's a difference between "giving up" and changing directions. Sometimes what you're doing just doesn't work for you and it's time to reevaluate. Then you can refine your goals and take new steps toward them. That's the opposite of giving up.

Sometimes I need to put everything on "pause." Just hit the pause button on everything, and take stock of where I am, if I'm on track, and if I need to course-correct.

If you write down your goals and then divide your big goals into smaller quarterly goals, then down to monthly targets, it's pretty easy to see if you're on track or not.

It's amazing to me how few people actually write down their goals. Successful people don't just "wing it" - they have a plan and they know exactly what they're doing.

So to answer your question, "Is it ok to give up?" I will say that I think sometimes it's good to correct the path you're on if you find you're not going in the direction that is in alignment with your goals. But don't give up!

There are definitely times when you should re evaluate what you are doing. If you can see now that what you are working on is not feasible or financially smart, it may be a good idea to "give up" and use your time on a better plan. If someone wants to give up because they are lazy and just don't feel like doing it, I think that is never good.

There's no right or wrong to give up. It depends on what perspective you are looking from. To some, giving up is simply for losers, but sometimes, you have to ask yourself, is it worth giving up on what you have, or is it a change of direction for the better.

Of course giving up too easily is not a good thing as certain things or event may takes time to see result.

Giving up will give you 2 outputs it could be positive or negative. It's not bad to give up because that is an option. Just think twice before you decide for a certain decision like giving up. Know first what would be the positive and negative consequences before you take action.

I don't think that giving up is okay. NO matter what problems you encounter you should never give up, you shoud never think that you are weak and that others are better than you. Motivate yourself and you will acheive great thing! Never back down in front of a problem! Fight it and it will be much better after you have solve it.

It's a mindset thing. To "give up" is a negative concept. It associates with defeat and gives birth to helplessness.

Try this instead. Whatever it is you are doing:

This method is not producing the results I need.
Let's learn from this and modify the method. It is time to do something "differently".
Sometime many things need to be done differently to navigate past your own hurdles.

This way you keep the goal in sight and that in itself is a victory.

To give up is to abandon the goal. That is a very expensive message to send your subconcious.

Sure, it is ok, but maybe reframing it and rewording it so it doesn't sound so defeating.

I recently released a former ambition/passion of mine, and it was the best thing. It freed me to fully follow things that were more appropriate for me.

The funny thing is that now I am on my path, fully, and I am now finding my way back to that old passion, but it is more correct for me now. If I had simply thought of it as "giving up," I would probably never have the opportunity to re-discover it and come back to it in a more balanced way.

Okay… these are some definitions of giving up: Give up what is not strictly needed; Put an end to a state or an activity; Give up in the face of defeat of lacking hope; admit defeat; Give up with the intent of never claiming again.
I guess then a bit of common sense should prevail in certain circumstances.

I guess one should use common sense to either drill through the wall or jump over it; whichever is the smartest way under the conditions prevailing.

It depends on the situation of course, but in general, why would you even think about giving up? Changing your direction, your route, course or what ever you want to call it, it not giving up.

Those quotations are always have been remarkable.

I'll leave this one here, a quote I read from a fiction novel before, but I cannot remember the title anymore.

Wisdom is knowing when to be doing and when it is useless even to try.

This quote however is not the same about giving up. It merely suggest to step back and regroup, attack the situation in another manner, style or technique

this really depends on what you define "giving up" to be. I think you are confusing giving up with being irrational, unrealistic, and being unhappy. You choose what you are striving for and what your goals are. If you realize that the path that you have chosen for yourself is not for you, then choosing a different path is not giving up, in my opinion. I can relate this to basketball for me. I almost called it quits after my freshman year when things got rough for me. I was not happy with my life and basketball was not working for me anymore. I really wanted to quit and very nearly did. I did not however. I just realized that after the year, that the program was not for me and I transferred schools and it ended up being the greatest decision of my life. A lot of my peers would have called transferring to be "giving up" but I just consider it a change of path for the better.

I guess it all depends on the situation. I mean if you were throwing away money to an online scam, give up. On the other hand if you are putting money and energy into something that seems to be more than you can handle at the time then I wouldn't really consider that giving up. It all depends on the Situation.

      True Story:
Somewhere around a year ago I decided to start my own social network, I figured I had enough supporters and figured I could kick fb's azz good. I began to learn thing's I never knew about business and that is that Strategic Management is alive and well, I also learned that these corporations work together and are larger than most countries put together.

Anyway, Initially I began to seek funds and started to notice something odd. The new net laws that were being pushed each time I had success, as well as bit's and piece of my project being used by the major Social Sites. And I won't even talk about things like net access being shut down in my whole area. I had bitten off more than I could chew, so the project is on the back burner and guess what? After rediscovering IM it will probably stay there.

I realized something about Internet Marketing and that is that Internet Marketers are quietly making more money than the major Social Sites ever will, without all the problems that a Social Site has to face or the type of competition.

So Yes sometimes Giving Up Is A Very Good Thing Especially if it's to get something Bigger & Better.

      -Walter Parrish-

It's a situational thing, really. In the context that those three quotes were taken from I would agree with the sentiment. Now, if we want to talk about trying to run your own business, I think it is just fine to give up if things just aren't working. This kind of thing isn't for everyone, and there is no shame in learning that you are not in fact an entrepreneur. Everyone can't be one.

cWARNING: THIS ONE IS DEEP-- BUT WORTH IT!

I think you are asking the wrong question-
Which is a common problem many have -- so here is a solution for all of my fellow warriors to consider.

First- first if you read Think and Grow Rich and other motivational programs they all quote the NEVER GIVE UP concept.
BTW- if you haven't read it yet it's free at
      Free Wealth Creation Classics

It's a book everyone should read at least twice a year.

IN THE BOOK HILL QUOTES A STORY
the story is about a general who leads his troops to battle to attack an enemy country.
They must sail there since the country is accross the ocean.

When they get there the general tells his troops to burn their ships so that THEY HAVE TO WIN....
      or die.

      good story BUT!!!!!

If you read Hill's autobiography he did some wonderful things but was also a jerk to his family who stopped speaking to him ( wife and kids)
and he was dead broke at the end of his career until W Clement Stone found him and brought him back to lecturing so he could get back on his feet.

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN? to THE guy who wrote the most influential success book of all time?

That's what I was wondering myself-
Until I started reading another book --
WHICH YOU ALL SHOULD ORDER RIGHT NOW!!!!!!
Called Psycho -cybernetics by Dr Maxwell Maltz
It's what all NLP and current success ideas are based on.

SO HERE'S THE BIG IDEA !!!
I have coached business owners and professionals for over 12 years on success- direct marketing - time management and other important profit producing skills.

I'm going to answer the question by giving you all a step by step process ok?

      1. Step 1 - find out what you really want to do
What woudl your ideal income and life be

      2. Step 2-
What skills do you have! or could you learn?

      3. Step 3-
Now decide HOW you are going to do it and give it a definite date for accomplishment

      4. STEP 4 THE BIG ONE-- get going doing it

      5. Every week you should
      A. Decide if what you are looking at right now or doing right now is getting you closer or taking you further away.
      B. Start doing ONLY the things that bring you closer.

      So in conclusion ----
It's not a matter of quitting or Never Quitting
      It's really an issue of
      1. Can you see yourself as ___________________.
      ( read psycho cybernetics)
      2. Is what you are doing - or is this project in sync.
See the issue is most of us just start doing and never consider the consequencs of success or failure

*yes- success sometimes is NOT the best result !!!!

When you're following your passion there may be moments when you consider giving up...but DON'T. No matter how difficult or challenging things become, the moment you give up you've lost all your chances for success. So...NO...NEVER give up.

However...if you find that you're dreading each day because you're doing osmething you truly don't love and don't have passion for, then by all means you should "give up." Hope this helps.

    Good post.

I think we all feel the same way sometimes.

Giving up is part of the process to achieve the top of whatever we want in this life.

We will find a lot of pain, and obstacles on the way, only those who really strong will see success.

I hope that helps a little bit.

For me it is okay to give up on things that don't work for you....or on things that are working against you....

If something is starting to make things worse, rather than solve a problem, then there's absolutely a need to start rethinking your objectives and goals...and go another route...

There's always another route to where we are eyeing to go to. It just takes understanding of what works for you and what doesn't to fully comprehend it all.

Like I always say, goals and dreams don't have to stop when circumstances change. The possibilities are endless for each one of us.

Well I believe things should be determined by some guidelines set up beforehand. There are also different categories that we have to take into consideration when we ask this question.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make (at least for us as internet marketers or even as wannabes) is to go into this thing with the mindset that it might be OK to give up.
Trials are going to come, issues are going to reveal themselves, setbacks are inevitable but if you have the mindset that you won't give up you can "keep going when the going gets tough".
But if you have the mindset that it may be alright to give up then when something arises that appears to be unbearable you are going to quit.
Here's another quote "No temptation has overtaken you except what is uncommon to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." 1 Cor 10:13 NIV

Just ask people that are making things happen online and you'll soon find out that they have been through some things that would cause average people to quit and think it's ok that they did so.

Make the decision to not give up on something unless you are definitely moving on to something greater.

An example before I shut up is that about 12 years ago I decided to start selling on ebay and make a living doing so. I decided then not to quit. My wife rebelled against me, the people in my circle of influence advised me against it and my family were of no support.

What's funny is that people looked at me and at times would think that I was poor or doing bad because I would go through some tough times. Hell, I went through the same kinds of tough times when I had a JOB. The difference after I made that decision was that I was in control and had the ability to tweak things in order to make more money or create more time availability.

I'm still here 12 years later but have been transitioning into something better doing affiliate marketing and product creation. I'm still here building my business online while "they" are still there going from JOB to JOB, complaining about the economy and wanting me to give up my time to run their errands because they have to work 10 hours a day no matter what to maintain.

Last December my family of 5 took a month long trip to Florida along with a 7 day cruise. I'm in this for the long haul, trials and all. I working to grow and expand my life, not give it up as I get older.

One more thing is that saving pain, losing money and losing dignity might be reflective of the need to look a certain way in the eyes of our peer group which in reality might need to be looked upon as indicators of moving toward greatness. People become considered great normally when they do something that is out of the norm or that people frown upon or that people think is "impossible".

Think About It. "Never, never, never give up!" ~ Winston Churchill

Of course it is ok to give up.

One must choose his/her battles wisely. A strategic retreat is often better than a sure loss. Use your resources wisely and act accordingly.

Now, one must set the scope of "Giving up"

Give up and go to sleep when you see you have a frustrating and non-productive day where everything goes wrong? You can always pick up where you left tomorrow... Seems good to me ...

Give up on life and commit suicide? Bad idea ....

So it depends how this that you are giving up on, how it fits in your bigger plan, idea, ecosystem of life, mission, destination and philosophy...

When you "give up" -you can even think about it as a metaphor of movement for a change... you "give" something "up" (to whom? to a "higher" force? - expect aid from God or the universe) ? ... Well, your wishes may or may not be granted.

If something is not working, it just means your plans need to be revised. Period. You can always revise your plans until they work. Or someone can lead you in the right direction if you can't figure it out.

If you have no passion for what you're doing, I'd say drop that quickly.

I don't call it giving up. For me its just reinvesting energy. If i see that an investment isn't giving me proper returns I have to shift my focus slightly to see WHAT will give me ample return on investment.

Giving up on Google adwords was a huge relief for me years ago. That allowed me to shift focus for the other networks and therefore benefited me. Now if i had said its time to stop IM, that's me tossing all my cards in when i didn't know i had a decent hand. After you reach a certain point in educating yourself, you should be able to intelligently know whether the cost of giving something up is better than sticking with the stress and patience it takes to get through it.

Am i saying it should be obvious if you're educated enough? Not at all. I'm just saying there is a difference between stepping back a little to minimize your losses to reinvest elsewhere and stepping away from the entire scene just because you don't think profit is possible.

Patience, Persistence - are main keys! Persistence is similar to patience, yet different. Waiting sounds more passive. But persistence infers action.

Notice I didn't include passion as a key. That's because passion is a given, do what you love to do.

Never, Ever Give Up On Yourself! We need to try, and even if we fail, at least we can be honestly proud of the attempt.

Don't think about the things you can't do. Think about the things you can do. There are no limitations to what we can do except the limitations we put on ourselves.

We all have the ability to totally transform every area in our lives. Nothing meaningful happens by itself, though. We have to make it come our way, by our own efforts. Organize your thoughts into plans. Then make your thoughts reality by taking some action.

    just my 2 cents,

    Aigul

For me it is ok to give up only in one case: you are giving up in one discipline to succeed in another.

Let me explain. For example you are struggling to succeed in baseball, but you find out that you are doing really well and have talent for football. Then it is ok to give up on baseball and concentrate on what you are doing well, in this case on football.

First time I am hearing the mosquito analogy-I like it. It would be great if we borrowed this kind of persistence.

I don't think it's ever ok to give up. There are a few negative habits I have that I'm trying to let go of but I don't think it's the same as giving up on a dream. If you feel strongly about anything then it's not ok to give up. Even if you're not doing well and have failed constantly. I have struggled for years with my artwork but I'm not giving up. I did give up on internet marketing for quite some time before coming back and I truly regret giving up in the first place. I lost so much time that could have been spent learning from the mistakes I made. Life is too short to give up on the dream. Once you do you can't get that time back. Until you can time travel, giving up is not an option.

Of course it is ok to give up at things. The questions to ask are what are you giving up, and why are you giving it up.

If you are giving up something that is destructive to you and/or your family, then yes give it up.

If you are giving up something that you still believe in, but others around you have told you to give it up, then you shouldn't.

Don't confuse giving up with doing something different towards a similar goal.

I don't remember where, but I read in one book where the author said "don't race a three legged horse" and the key is knowing when you have a three leg horse.

To me, it seems that the decision to quit revolves around a broad goal or a specific tactic.

If your goal is to earn money on the internet (a broad goal) and you have tried several methods/plans/systems (specific tactics), but have not been successful, then try another method/plan/system. The path to fulfilling your goal is broad and there are many ways to reach your goal on the internet.

If your goal is to earn money from AdSense by writing articles on a certain topic (a specific tactic), but you do not have the viewers because the search volume is low, then you might be trying to race a three legged horse. You might need to quit and try something else.

Thomas Edison didn't invent the light bulb (a broad goal) by limiting his experimenting to only one possible filament (a specific tactic), determined to make it work. Instead, when a possible filament did not work, he moved on to the next possible filament (different tactic). He never quit his broad goal, but he did quit many specific tactics.

I think the words we use are very powerful. In many cases realizing that something isn't effective or isn't working can be very important. I don't like the phrase "give up" however because it implies that you are admitting defeat. I prefer a change of heart or to follow a new path instead, but more or less it is all the same. "giving up" is not always something negative.
