What do you do when you've lost your motivation?

I'm wondering what sort of things you do when you temporarily lose your motivation.

Without doing anything about it, I often find that I can lose my motivation for days on end or even a whole week. But I found out a couple of things that limits it to just a day or even a couple of hours.

For me, on the rare occasion that I do feel a bit lost and like not working I take the day off , read some good material (currently re-reading Think and Grow Rich) and do something with my girlfriend/friends.

For someone like me that works a full time job, and then puts 30-40 hours a week into IM, taking the day off from all of it is a very rare treat. On top of that, allowing myself to spend any money on any sort of recreational activity is very rare, so it's another nice treat.

How about you? What are some of the ways that you overcome the devil in disguise?

Best,
-Mike

I sit down with a pen and paper and take an honest look at my life. If I haven't reached my goals. I have no time to rest. I have a holiday planned for when I get to my first goal. I have no time to lose motivation. Look at all the people starting to figure this thing out.

Rest might leave me leave me behind. Great book. I also use Brainsync every morning and night. Helps keep me dialed in. Good question.

Good tip. Take more action, less reading, reading is fundamental, but is action that bring you success.

  • Well, I talk to people and hear their stories. After that, I gain my motivation back. Reading quote and watching motivational video also help a lot.

Then it's time to stress off. Lay on your bed close your eyes and hear some music on high volume which make you clear you mind... For 10-30 minutes.

After this you're ready to get motivated easier. You can read in this section or find some great videos on youtube, like I do

  • What i do when i feel like I've lost motivation, there are thing i love to do. First is to pray and then sleep the whole day. Second is to go out with my family or with friends to unwind forget about work at least for that time. After doing this i will feel renewed, all of the bad thought will be gone. Being with family or getting enough sleep will help me get back on track with my daily goals.

Losing motivation i think is a normal thing that each of us have experienced, i believe that having an inspiration is a big help, as well as having a time for yourself and chill around to refresh our minds.

I go for a long run! There is nothing more uplifting, motivating, and positively changing (attitude and all) then to head out with some awesome tunes, my running shoes, and the pavement. I almost always come back feeling more motivated than I do on some of my best days.

I also take breaks when necessary - especially to play with my twins. They bring me back to what's most important in life... and then it comes full circle (for me) on why I must not lose sight of my business goals.

^ This. Sometimes I can get back on track by watching a couple of vids or reading something uplifting, but when I'm in a real productivity slump, going for a run is the one thing 100% guaranteed to help me snap out of it.

It might sound crazy but I've discovered that the best way to motivate me is to slap on my ipod and go hit the gym. 30-60 minutes of listening to some power tunes and working my ass off and I'm good to pick up the sword and do battle again. The endorphins that your body releases helps combat frustration and stress, and I find that I can use the time to look at the problem that's sapped my willpower from a different perspective.

Find the solution that works for you. Maybe it will be through exercise, maybe it's through walking or reading. Find a center that recharges your spirit.

Im in that situation now. I havent really worked on much of anything for the past few weeks because Ive lost motivation.

I've been through this before and cant remember what I did before, but theres always something that gets me back motivated. I hate when I cant seem to get motivated for this lenght of time though....Ive tried forcing it..but no bueno.

Im just now (today) getting motivated again. It took me watching several funny youtube (also motivational) videos. Also, watching fantasy factory seems to help as well.

Just seeing other people motivated and going after what they want.

Lost motivation? That is usually when I consider giving up...on life.

Why? Because without motivation I will never do what takes to fulfill my dreams.

And without fulfilling my dreams I will never be happy.

And I don't see a point of living if I cannot be happy.

    So I don't really have a choice.

Whenever I lose motivation and I feel disgusted in life. I always put in my mind this phrase that my teacher in high school always remind us " Life is too short " this simple phrase always remind me that indeed life is short, you will never know when will God will take it away, this remind me , that everyday is a thankful day, that I still woke up and see his life precious creation.

Indeed, I always make it a habit that when I'm losing motivation and focus I look at others who are less fortunate than I am and in this way I realize that I need to get my focus back and be thankful to my creator.

it depends on your lifestyle. Making sure there are always tough goals to reach and having an exciting lifestyle that involves traveling is key. In the last few months I've been highlighted in entrepreneur mag and the wall street journal but it's never enough once you get there the idea is to set your goals high and reach higher.

Don't ever give up there is always more to conquer and do in life.

Hope that motivates you a bit!

When I lose motivation, I let myself take a break. I'm all for hard work, but if my brain doesn't feel like cooperating there's not much that can be done, IMO. On the plus side, I often come back from a break feeling refreshed and ready to go.

My advice is to go for a break while letting yourself really "go" for it. There are many a time where I felt that I needed a break and took a short holiday or just watch a movie....but end of the day, my mind refuses to let go and kept going back to all the business problems. Till date, I have not found a foolproof way to really take a break.

On days when i feel demotivated or low on energy, or just totally apathetic i just step away from it and do something totally unrelated and usually entirely physical - go hiking, or practice martial arts etc.

Then i sleep on it and find that the next day i'm back to getting stuck into things

When I don't feel motivated I just go out and play basketball for 1 or 2 hours. I think that sport is really good for everyone's health. The following day when you wake up you feel much better.

        And remember:

        "Mens sana in corpore sano"

BTW, this is Latin if you didn't know and it means: Healthy mind in healthy body

Great book is Stillpower by Garret Kramer.

The essence is instead trying to power through when things get rough with willpower, to become still. That could mean going for a run - doesn't have to be literal. Just back off until the natural desire returns.

Going to the gym and running are both great restarters. I find that bike riding or hiking on one of the many nature trails in this area rejuvinates my mind and spirit. True, you aren't making money doing it (except for any passive income you might have earned) but we're only human! Gotta refresh the batteries...

Just take a break and do something nice for yourself...it'll work itself out!

What I do is jog, walk, run, talk with friends that I know are funny or very positive attitude.

Also reading or writing can help you a lot. You always lose EMOTIONAL energy and you will get it back by MOVING.

Whenever I lose motivation - and I know it happens to the very best of us - I will simply go and do whatever my heart is set on. Meaning, in your heart you know what sounds pleasant and good for you to do, so I just go and do it. Much of the time it's as simple as taking a long walk with my dog and some motivational audio in my headphones.

Sometimes playing a video game for a short while helps as well. What we need to do is reward ourselves for making progress, period. Much of the time lack of motivation comes from doing something for a long enough time and either having not enough to show for it, or not being rewarded in any substantial way for it, and so your mind gets distracted, turns down the motivation, and turns up the desire to do other things that your heart might normally be set on.

Usually after I do whatever these things are, I find it easy to get back to work doing what I'm driven towards.

    I hope that helps.

Motivation is an interesting topic as it is very different to different people.

In my adult life I have often found myself short of motivation. I tend to self sabotage, working hard to get into a position where I can reap the rewards, but when I am there my motivation dwindles and I never get rewarded for my efforts! I have no idea why this is!

Anyway, when I get low on motivation, I think its important to take a step away, for a few days or perhaps even a week. I try not to think about whatever it is I am avoiding at all. For me, when my motivation is really low, quick fixes don't work. By stepping away completely and not even thinking about it, at some point in the near future I come back to the task refreshed and often have new ideas.

    Hope this helps someone!
