Hello Guys,

I'm new to this forum, but I'm not new to internet marketing.

Nice to meet all of you .

I find my self asking the question below, all to often:

How does one become productive?

This is what I found - that led to my most "peak state" and "effective behavior" habits.

Boom! Let's go. (Adopted from my blog) Enjoy!

Here are the components that lead to being productive.

Stimulation –> Energy –> Focus –> Results.

Stimulation

I love stimulating myself and you should too! Obviously you have to be careful by the means of which you stimulate yourself. There are many healthy and unhealthy ways to get yourself “in the mood” to get some work done. I have condensed my best work habits and working mood energies down to an exact science. Perhaps these methods will allow you to accomplish a great deal as well, I think it would be an injustice if they did not!

I drink espressos, lattes, coffee, you name it! I use a little bit of biological / chemical mental stimulation, the aftermath of caffeine! It is true that caffeine changes the chemistry of your brain and that it can create symptoms of insomnia or insomniacs, however it does stimulate thought as well! Besides if you cannot fall asleep at night because you O.D. on caffeine then go get some work done or exercise! That is how I see it.

Starbucks makes outstanding drinks, so I’m no stranger to their products.

Secondly, I use film scores, techno and dance mixes to get me in the “Hell YEAH!” type of mood. These 3 types of music have 1 common symptom, they are upbeat, uplifting and contain minimal lyrics. I cannot write as efficiently when someone is singing while I’m thinking, so these forms of music work great!

If you throw a dance mix and a coffee at me I become very productive.

Energy

Caffeine also releases chemicals in your brain, I believe Dopamine is one of them, which makes you feel great and it also gives you energy and a more energetic sense of focus. The audio waves jumping into my brain from the dance music automatically fills me with positive energy which breeds positive thoughts which breeds progress which creates results!

There are other ways to get a good source of energy without relying on caffeine or music as much. Exercising actually gives you more natural energy. I also run about 5 miles a day 5 times a week, so I get the best of both worlds. Juicing is another alternative to caffeine, this is where you extract the juices of vegetables and fruits and after your body processes it you get the affects of the natural energy without the digestion of caffeine.

Focus

Focus is essentially channeling your thoughts into one specific, objective like pattern to create a desired outcome. It is the art of eliminating distractions you could say. It is harder to shut out distractions if you are in an environment that is crawling and swimming with them. With that being said your ability to focus with largely depend on the environment you are in, in which you are trying to remain productive.

While some feed off of the noise and energy others require silence to focus. Personally I function much better with a bass bumping in my ears and audio waves turning my brain into a synced drum sequence. Sometimes I will even type words to the beat of a song! It’s pretty sweet, it’s like the rythm of the music is aligned with my thoughts.

Anyway, if you are the silent type, libraries are great environments to get work done in. At libraries you do not have the distractions that may be at your house, like the food in your kitchen, the T.V. set, etc. Another point: you cannot shout out distractions if or concentrate on one particular thought pattern if you do not have energy.

The less energy you have, the harder it will be to concentrate on one particular thing. Which is why you need energy before you can focus for a worthwhile period of time.

Results

This is the best part! Where you reach your desired outcome, whether it is writing and publishing your first book like I just did, or finishing your math homework! If you have not yet read: The Simple Truth About Making Money On The Internet you really should, because it is exceptional, I wrote it and there is nothing quite like it.

Back to the point: Your ability to complete your work will only upgrade your habits and ability to focus to get things done. This will allow you to become more productive in any area of life.

So long as you understand the items that create results, you will never have a problem getting your foot one step closer to your desired goal. Stimulate yourself, breed some energy, realize your focus and see results! This is a very simple method and guess what:

SIMPLE works.

There are way to many things in life that are complex as it is anyway and there is no need to confuse the ingredients of productivity with that of something complex!

The idea of listening to music through headphones while working is actually a great one. I run daily listening to music through headphones, and it literally helps me "zone in" on my strides, breathing, and adds an extra "umph" to my workout.

I can definitely see how the same effect would transcend into working on my laptop. Not sure why I haven't thought to try this before, but thanks for the tip.

I couldn't agree with you more Justin...Since I don't drink coffee juicing works great for energizing my body and techno, some nice Coltrane or Bird gets me going. I do enjoy going to Starbucks for a passion tea every now and then. Focus action is the key though without it nothing get accomplished...Thanks for sharing the insight, very good information.

    This was a nice read!

I actually just began drinking coffee this summer - I'm not really a fan of the taste of it, but I was in some situations where I needed the extra energy boost and I guess I kind of acquired the taste. Caffeine surely isn't the best for me but I'm hooked now! It feels odd to work without it.

I'm gonna take a look at this thread when classes start back next week - I'll need some extra motivation to get that homework done! haha. Thanks for the post.

I found a huge boost to my productivity came when I bought a whiteboard and stuck it up next to my desk to plan out all my tasks and projects. Just the act of taking a few minutes at the start of the day and a few at the end to plan out what I wanted to achieve, really gets me focused.

Stimulation –> Energy –> Focus –> Results - 100% agreed with it and we must set a goal for ourselves.

Everyday i will start with a cup of coffee, not necessary Starbucks, any coffee will do, not so sure is it because of the caffeine, definitely it will boost up my energy.

These are great ways to stay focused, and it's good of you to share these methods with others, Justin.

Much of the time, methods are so simple and taken for granted that they're often overlooked. I for one have been using this exact method for a long time now, and that is to listen to a steady stream of trance music while sipping on coffee and doing my work.

    It works! Try it out.

I've watched a video recently that showed that multi-tasking actually does have an effect on the brain and it wasn't a good one. So what you say is also true. Which is why I force myself to only have one window and one tab open when ever I am browsing the web.

I agree that staying focused on just one thing at a time works best. In the always changing IM world that is sometimes difficult because of the many distractions (emails, offers, etc.) that can keep you jumping from one thing to the next and as a result not getting anything accomplished.

I try to filter which offers I investigate and when I see one that I think is a good one, I do purchase it to review and use at a later date.

I listen to motivational CDs a lot while working and find them very relaxing while at the same time mentally stimulating.

I do high energy tasks during my peak productive times during the day. The more mundane tasks I save for low energy times. Nothing worse than trying to think when you're in the 2pm slump.

I don't do any other task during my peak productive time other than the task that I am focused on. I find that it also helps me to work in stretches of 40 to 50 minutes with a short break in between.

I am really on this subject recently maybe we can create some group to discuss different ideas so we help each other improve?

It is interesting how everyone is different in what triggers their productivity.

I used to be a big caffeine fan but over the years it caught up with me and began to make me sick so I don't drink anything with caffeine with it anymore.

Sleep, getting a good night sleep is probably the most important thing for me.

Working in my peak hours which are 5am to 10am.

Juicing, I can't believe the energy I get from drinking several big glasses of freshly made juice a day. A favorite is apple, carrot, spinach, with a bit of ginger.

Whiteboard, love working out ideas on my big whiteboard

Astrid a great little app to put tasks in

No music for me while I work unless I am cleaning. It is distracting to me.

        Meditation for laser sharp focus

        Daily multi vitamin mineral

        Lots of plain filtered water

No soda, smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.

I am at my most productive very early in the morning whilst consuming vast amounts of sugarless coffee.

I focus better when I stick to my 'to do' list that I prepare before knocking off for the day. If I don't finish a task on my list it goes to the top of the list for the day after. I start with that unfinished task because I am always more motivated at the beginning of my working day.

I've been having incredible improvements in my results.

Now have to focus on my sleeping habits!

The best way I found to become productive is not to have to force yourself to do your work. You need to make sure you want to do it and I think the best way to do that is to start off with a strong coffee! Once you're pumping ready to do stuff then having short term targets (write down what you're going to complete that day) and long term targets (what you're going to have finished by the end of the month) really helps. Also having a whiteboard up with all this written down and a checklist so i can see what i've checked off and realised how much work i've done really helps too

  • Nice post Justin- I completely agree with you. Once you develop the habit of being able to focus on one think it's incredible what you can achieve! My life started to change around once I was able to do that. It's amazing how distractions can take you a great deal away from your objectives. The reason you don't end up achieving your goals is NOT because you are not capable or lack the skill set but because you lacked the FOCUS!

Something that I use, that is amazingly simple is to set the timer on my phone for a 25 minute countdown. Then I work hard for those 1500 seconds and then take 5 minute break. What this does is stop me wasting time (because I only have 25 minutes) and really focus my attention. Then for the 5 minutes I do some excersise, meditation, washing up etc. so not only have I become more productive working I also have a cleaner house, clearer mind and...

    try it.

Coffee helps me write. But I think the key to being super productive is to have a burning desire for success (as talked about in Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich").

When I am feeling lazy, I simply visualize my goal as having already been completed and build up excitement and anticipation. After that, working towards my goals becomes effortless

Oh yes! Caffeine + music is a great combo for me as well. I prefer trance or other music with fast pace and no vocals -- especially vocals are distracting. Music gives energy and keeps focused.

I used to do too hard strength training and was tired and lacking energy. Nowadays I concentrate on lighter weights and especially HIIT, that is effective and keeps my energies going.

Also affirmations and setting clear and simple goals keep me motivated. Meditation helps in focusing, too.

I think something to look forward is what keeps you motivated. I.e. if you want to get up early - give yourself a GOOD reason for it, e.g. nice meal, good music.

Also, before going to bed try to relax, or even meditate for at least 10 minutes, that helps you focus on what tasks are the most important for tomorrow, what needs to be done first. According to experts, that is also very recommended during the day - take 10 minute breaks for meditation and relaxation.
