What do you do to relax?

Have you ever heard of the expression...

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Many people, they're in such a rush in their everyday lives they forget how important the element of play is.

Play is letting your hair hang loose once in a while, kicking back, relaxing, having a good time.

It's important in business to sometimes just let yourself, be.

If you keep on pushing yourself sooner or later you will burn out from stress. Like it not it happens all too often.

There we are putting in all the hours under the sun in a constant chasing after the wind, doing a bit of this, doing a bit of that, doing something else - busy, busy, busy.

And then one day it hits us...

We ask ourselves the question... what am I doing all of this for if by the fruits of my labor I seem to make no time for myself?

It's vitally important to recharge your batteries every now and then.

It's vitally important you know when to take a break and give yourself a little reward.

For the ladies this might be a relaxing session at the beauty parlor, a massage or a beauty treatment, perhaps getting your hair done, whatever it is this 'me' time is a perfect opportunity to leave all of your stresses of the week far behind.

For the guys here you might enjoy a spot of fishing, a good stomp in the mountains or working on your prized car.

The activity you choose is unimportant, anything just to get you away from work for a bit to allow your mind, spirit and body time to recuperate and recharge themselves ready for the next spell.

You'll find by taking regular exercise or simply taking time out that you'll be a lot more productive with the time available to you if you learn to really listen to what your body is telling you.

Taking time out, rewarding yourself with a little play reinvigorates the mind and helps you to solve problems when you do get back to work in much more creative ways.

By gum, life can actually be exciting if you simply allow it to happen.

So put a little spring in your step, take out some magical moments for yourself, reward yourself regularly and who knows at the end of the day you may just end up making a lot more money.

Last night for example, I decided to take some time out for myself. Having bought a good bottle of wine earlier in the day, I opened it at about 9pm.

And here I am in the middle of the New Forest National Park in southern England, the forest stretching away in all directions.

By the light of a near perfect full moon, I drank my bottle of wine, cranked some music on and made my way into the middle distance into a small meadow and danced my socks off. All the while marveling at the absolutely stunningly beautiful surroundings I found myself in.

Now today, I feel fantastic, fully refreshed having let my hair down for a few hours and now raring to get cracking on with some more work.

What about you?

What importance do you place on play?

Rewarding yourself?

How do you take time out for yourself and why do you do it?

How do you feel after you've taken time out for yourself?

Finally, when you come back to work after taking time out, do you find you end up being a lot more productive?

If you have any, please post up your own relaxation tips below...

Warmest regards,

Mark Andrews

    You know, it's funny...

I relax by writing my own stuff.

I love bringing my visions to eloquent life.

Right now, I'm up in Eugene OR, by myself, doing yoga twice a day, coffeehouse hopping, writing up a storm.

This month is going to be my busiest of the year.

I need to make sure I give to myself...

    Otherwise...

How the hell will I ever have anything to give to others?

A blog I'm writing dives into how everything we do is an investment.

    Yet...

When a lot of people invest in their happiness, they feel guilty.

    Sad.

I don't do anything, only work, work, work. I know it's wrong and I'm trying to make time for myself, but every time something urgent comes up. I'm planning to take a day off this coming weekend to go shopping and maybe even watch a movie that night. Can't wait

To relax I find that I literally have to geographically move myself away from work, computers etc.

So I find it really hard to chill if I'm in the same room as my laptop - even if it's off.

I really love to bike ride, go for a walk, drink at the local pub or just go for a mooch around the shops.

I also love a good book, but struggling to find a good one at the moment.

People always say, "I'll be happy when... [fill in the blank]"

    That's B.S.

First do the stuff that makes you happy, THEN manifest (or reveal) what you want.

    Most people have it a$$-backwards....

    Great story Mark!
    It is very entertaining.

Most people especially the one who is craving for money they really spent most of their time for their work and forget to give time for their own self.

    Sunday is my rest day.
It is the time where I want to get relaxed, go to church, hang out with girlfriend, etc.

    Give yourself a break.
Go zone out, and stay away from your working tables, laptops, etc.

    Cheers,

Golf... lots of golf! Perfect way to relax for 4 hours or so, and whilst if you're going just for a 4 hour walk you can have your mind turning over all the problems in your working and personal life, playing a round of golfs means you're focusing on your game, playing your shots and at the end of 18 holes, i've realised that i've just spent all that time not worrying about anything else other than which club to use next. Having said that, I can sometimes come off the course stressed with my game...

As I've gotten older, relaxing and having fun has become a shift in my priority of things. I take breaks throughout the day when I'm working. I also do meditation at least 30 minutes a day about 4 to 5x per week. I'm also very active. I play tennis, basketball, and soccer, and I also go on very long hikes.

Sometimes to relax, I'll sit down and work on my fictional novel that will probably take me another 1-2 years to finish, but I find that it relaxes me.

I also make sure that I have fun. I travel 3 months out of the year and I spend most of my free time with my friends, family, and the girlfriend. All work and no play definitely makes Rod a dull boy and Rod won't have it! lol

I play with my son to relax. There are also times when I just sleep late for a change. Recently, my husband introduced me to another way to relax, going to their province and helping his parents harvest their crops. By the end of the day, we eat what we reap.

Hot Rods! I visit the H.A.M.B. just as much as I visit here. I plan to spend an entire summer just driving around the US in a cool hot rod attending and speaking at seminars and going to hot rod shows.

A car like this would be just fine...

When I'm on the road, there is no internet, no lists to build, no emails to send, no posts to answer, no admin to do, nothing but me, my throttle, a V8 with too much power and the road...

Many ways to relax. It also depends on the type of person you are. I saw someone there wrote writing. Good way to relax i think. I relax by chilling out with friends. By this I mean having dinner out and then coffee after dinner. A good way to bond with each other, tell stories and update each other of life's happenings. Sometimes, watch acoustics or movies... and sleeeeep! Very important.

Its funny , sad even but when reading the op post i was reminded of a school head teacher i used to know. She was single and a real workaholic , and at about the age of 50 she became ill and had to retire.Within about 4 weeks of retiring she was out looking for advisor posts etc because she didn't know what else to do.She had lost the art of relaxing, she had made no time for any relationships as she was always working , and then all of a sudden when that work was gone , boom she was like a ship without a rudder. Sometimes i wonder if that could happen to a lot of us on here.We are all chasing the dream of only working a few hours or less a day but if and when we achieve that will be be so used to work work work that we wont enjoy being able to enjoy ourselves ... food for thought
