Your life without internet. Can you imagine it?

If you're like me, your morning starts with lifting the lid of the laptop. My eyes stay peeled to the screen for the rest of the day. I check e-mail and social networking websites often, even while I'm working. I use Google, Wikipedia, Youtube, read online newspapers, go on this great forum, you name it. Every hour, hell, every minute, to be honest, of every day.

You get the picture. I'm on a constant internet overdose. And even though I love it, I feel at times that it makes me anxious. And inpatient. And I see my attention span shrinking just a little bit more every day.

Do you feel the same?

I came across this interesting article written by Jake Davis aka "Anonymous", a world-renowned hacker.

My life after Anonymous: 'I feel more fulfilled without the internet'

p.s. I've tried. I cannot imagine my life without internet. Though I clearly remember a time when I didn't even have a computer .

Everyone keeps appreciating the internet and but no one says, what will happen without a laptop or computer but haves internet? Sorry, I am just off the OP's discussion. But, seriously there are certain times when your hard-disk will fail, your heat fan stops working, etc. So you need to have a backup. Just my perception!!!

Yes, but do you actually take a day, every now and then, and stay off the internet? And I'm not talking about holidays&such. Just a regular day.

      Yeedig? lol

That being said - anyone here who says not having the internet anymore wouldn't bother them probably hasn't tried/experienced it yet.

But don't make your life revolve around it.

We live in an age where the internet is almost a necessity and to be away from it can be very hard.

I have met lots of great people whom I would have never met if it wasn't for the internet.

But it is also important that we get away from our virtual worlds and spend time in the real world which is quite a challenge now.

There was no public use of the internet for the first 40 something years of my life. I didn't know what I was missing.

Today I am at a computer most of the day. That is not healthy, so I go walk a few miles every day.

But, every now and then when the warriorforum is down, I go into withdrawal. My hands start shaking, then my entire body begins to shake, and I hallucinate spiders and snakes.

Then the warriorforum comes back online, and everything is once again wonderful.

I agree that we need to regulate our time on the Internet and take regular breaks away from the Net and our desks, but I could not do what I do without the Internet.

I am a freelance writer and an Internet Marketer and almost everything I do is tied to the Internet in some way from article or marketing research to contact with my clients or story subjects. There are some things I could do via telephone and fax (Fax? Ugh!) But my productivity would drop and for most people, income is tied to productivity.

I would not want to go back to the "old days and old ways" of communication and research.

Are they? If it's true, then the constant connection to internet and its nature might be the reason.

I like what Jake Davies says in his description of his life now:

"...the feeling of being able to close my eyes without being bombarded with flashing shapes or constant buzzing sounds, which had occurred frequently since my early teens and could only be attributed to perpetual computer marathons. Sleep is now tranquil and uninterrupted and books seem far more interesting. The paranoia has certainly vanished. I can only describe this sensation as the long-awaited renewal of a previously diminished attention span."

I am crazy about internet and I really can't imagine my life without internet anymore.
I seat all day at office & in my home getting to know and learn all new things day to day, because of the internet i have so many programs that I'm learning and working on them. If have a question, I just go online, and i have my answer there in many ways.
And i do have a life there as well, I'm exercising, I'm singing, I'm dancing, etc....
Where i live, a small city in UK, the only library that they got is about history of ......, what else, UK!!!!
So is hard for me to go to the "big city" and search for what i want.
So internet for me is real savior.

Best advice I've gotten - DON'T start out online.

Think of it this way - when someone's an alcoholic, or an addict of any kind, one telltale sign is that they have to start the day with their addiction. A beer, a shot, a joint....checking your email - whatever it is, if you have to do it first thing, you're in for a bad day.

So start your day with a different routine - voice exercises, meditation, stretching, yoga, a walk, reading the paper, doing the dishes - and you'll see what your day can be like without the internet. After that, it becomes easier and easier to do offline things, and the internet becomes less a pleasure-fulfilling addiction than what it should be - a job, a place to visit, and a hobby.

You're right and it's a good strategy. It's mostly good because the first hours of the day are usually the best for getting a lot of work done and also because the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.

I was born before the internet so I remember what it was like. Nowadays, I spent a week in hospital and had arranged for a wireless modem but had major delivery problems so I had a pc but no internet for a week and it did drive me nuts.
However, I could still write articles. I just could not email them or check emails and I was so happy when I got home...except that my email box had over 500 emails, despite my messages saying I would be offline for a week.

Maybe it's a sign that it's becoming a recurring theme. It makes sense. We are now realizing how much the internet is becoming an integral part of our lives and we start asking questions about what this means.

Some say that without the internet they would fall behind other people. But if the internet stopped working, unlikely, but, for the sake of it, let's just say it would, then it would be gone for everyone. So, in a way, we would all be slower in some tasks.

The bad part that I see is that it would get much harder to start a business with minimum investment and a great marketing tool would be taken away.

Indeed, we would have to make a lot more trips to the bank, travel agencies, and so on. I just booked a flight while drinking my morning coffee and doing 10 other things at the same time. If I'd had to go to a travel agency, I would have lost hours on one thing.

For me, Life was so smooth and nicely going until 2003...Then came the Internet in my life..For a year and so I thought it was just one of many things that we live with in life..Then I met my future husband and we married and started our own work....Now, almost 9 years later, I feel I can't live without Internet..After all it is the only source through which we seek our ends meet

Whatever free time I get I dedicated to blogging and mentoring young writers. Living without Internet would be more like starting the life from a dead end.

Besides, science never lets you go back in time....Life has to move on...and you have to learn to accept the Internet for good or bad reasons.

I spend a lot of time online. I've pondered this question.

I could walk away from it tomorrow.
That said, it would depend on whether I could live financially without it as its part of my business.

So my attachment and attraction - although real, is very much a pragmatic and practical thing with real goals and strategies attached.

Much rather be spending my time outdoors or doing other things a lot of the time

Sometimes I wish the Internet would just crash & burn. It's a love/hate relationship. With it my life flashes before my eyes (I was 38 when I started, woke up one day to find that I'm 52); without it, do I have a life? You're right, it is a love/hate relationship. It can be extremely useful and/or fun, but other times it does sort of hypnotize you and you spend a lot of time on things that aren't so useful or necessary or particularly fun.

So would I, and I don't want to do that either. I have worked for a boss over 30 years ago for only three months, and I don't want that again.

When I first started working with computers there was no mouse and no monitor, just punchcards - no one knows what it is nowadays - and I am very glad we now have PCs and Internet as it is. I don't feel like it would want to live without it. I can't remember a day in the last 15 years when I did not use the Internet, and I will switch it off only when I go on my final journey

Sabinavarga - it sounds like you are overdoing it a touch! Addiction is not a good thing :-|

Me, I absoluely LOVE the internet. And, yes, I'm on it all day long generally, and often all evening too. BUT I do get away too.

Three times a week or so it's 2 hours of tennis. Every two days half an hour of funcational/strength exercises.

And a couple of times a month up to London for the day for one thing or another. (OK, OK, you are right: I probably have the iPad on the train.)

But seriously (if you are being serious), I think you need to get out more :-|

It's a work/life balance thing. And if UR really noticing it affect your brain power, chill more.

Then your copywriting will be even COOLER! ;-)

Then your copywriting will be even COOLER! ;-)

Hey Malc, thanks for the advice! You're right, balance is everything. The thing is, I don't even have internet on my phone (I know, so 2007), so whenever I'm away from my computer, and that does happen every day, I don't miss it at all.

Anyway, there's no going back. Times are a'changin', and so are we. I read a piece on this today:

Are we evolving tech, or is tech evolving us?

It's about how our brains are getting rewired with the use of technology. Interesting stuff!

I have found if I keep a basic business overlay, I can make the internet fit to my business, rather than the other way around. It took away all the anxious feelings from information overload when i realized this one point. Design your business, then fit the internet to your needs. Rather than becoming a slave to information overload, you can make the internet work for you !!!! Nothing is ever seemless, but you can make it a lot easier, applying the internet to your business plan, rather than trying to design a business to internet applications

Thanks for the share, He wrote a great article indeed and does sound he was very truthful about his feelings. The thing with the Internet though it makes things a lot more convenient and we all got use to how easy it is to find out any type of information.

At the same time I am a big believer in having a balance when it comes to living life outside the net and also dedicating time to it as well, whether its for your finances (IM) or simple enjoyment of the Internet.

That's why I make sure to do my daily cardio before I even open my Laptop lid haha.

A day without the internet, phone etc. is essential every few weeks. I'll take the bike out, go hit the twisty roads for a few hundred miles, come home, eat, and turn on the game or the race. All without opening a laptop, checking the forums, anything...only technology I have is an ipod and the ECU on the bike spraying fuel.

You gotta disconnect every now and then

Nope, unfortunately everything now revolves the Internet. Even now I do most of my shopping online (except for food) instead of hopping into a car and driving to the mall or something. Plus, the stuff online is cheaper than in stores anyway..

Laptops today are a necessity and so is your internet because without it, your laptop will be nothing but a device that allows you to calculate and write on your MS Word. But the main point is it doesn't connect you to the world, which by the way, is the reason why internet was born.
Internet helped us grow and be adapted to the ever changing world of technology. Without the internet, it's like we're slowly creeping back to the past. Just imagine how long you have to wait again until the courier will deliver your mails.

Alright, so most of you can't don't and won't live without internet, at least not if you have a say in it .

But what is the internet, really?

I came across an interesting TED talk today about what the internet is made of.

Here's how it goes: "When a squirrel chewed through a cable and knocked him offline, journalist Andrew Blum started wondering what the Internet was really made of. So he set out to go see it -- the underwater cables, secret switches and other physical bits that make up the net."

    What is the Internet, really?

It's true that the internet has simply become part of our lives. Life would not be impossible without it... but there's probably no way back.
