Don't Sacrifice Your Health For Success

A while back I was running a company I built from zero. Had offices and partners around the world, I was riding high. I made lots of mistakes and crashed.

One of the mistakes was working how we think entrepreneurs are 'supposed' to work. I counted one time (stopped after that since it was depressing) that I worked 8 straight months, zero days off, and averaged 16 hours a day. At the time, I was proud of that, wore it like a badge of honor.

However, it took a massive toll on my health. I went to lots of junk food - i was never home to eat, I gained literally over 100 pounds (over a decade), had sleep problems, ulcers, asthma, and more.

I have long since learned my lesson, lost all of that weight (my doctor wants me to go into that niche..), changed my work habits, even changed how I design and build companies.

The point is this. Your success is not worth your health. Don't end up sacrificing your own health on your path to success.

You owe it to yourself to give you good health! And, your success will be greater in the long run, when you are healthy.

You don't really look overweight in your avatar. Nonetheless, I so agree with you to not sacrifice health for success. It's really a bad decision to do that. Health and family should always be your priority. Yes, you may be successful in your work or as a leader in a company, but if all your efforts for the company take toll on your health, your company wouldn't really care (depending on your reputation and the kind of company). Success is important, I know, but if you have poor health will success still matter to you. Another thing, family should be rest and not work. When you lose your work, you will have a family to run to, to turn to. But if you lose your family, would you run to your work? Work will always be there, if you lose it you can always find a new one. When you lose your family you can never replace any of them. The cost of success could be high. But health and family - these are priceless. Even if I don't have a lot of money I could still always enjoy good health and happy family.

Great advice! The thing is, you actually are much more productive and can achieve a lot more things if you get enough sleep, healthy food and if you find time to exercise. When you're in shape, you have the energy to do the same things in half the time.

It's great to love what you do and it's easy to forget about your health before it sounds the alarm. Thanks for the reminder!

I agree, health is wealth as what old saying stated which is true. Success is nothing if you will end up unhealthy.

I agree with you, we webmaster tend to sacrifice our family and friends just to make a couple of hunderd dollars - and then with tonnes of cash at our disposal, we don't have the health or strength to live a happy life. Its really sad...

I wish you a speedy recovery and a good health !

This made me think of a piece I caught last night about Duncan Bannatyne (UK multi millionaire and original 'star' of the dragons den) suffering a heart attack. Ironically he owns a huge chain of gyms and health clubs but that obviously hasn't helped, neither has his millions prevented it from happening.

I hear what your saying Warren and thanks for sharing. I hope you have fully recovered from what you went through.

About 2 months ago, a good friend of mine sadly passed away at age 40 due to stomach cancer. He used to work offline in London from 7am to 8pm, he suffered from stress, never exercised and ate junk food all the time. So stress, poor diet and lack of exercise were the main factors according to the Doctor. The poor guy was planning on retiring in Spain at the age of 50 with his wife and 2 kids. He had planned a holiday next year to take the kids to Walt Disney in Florida and was really looking forward to spending quality time with the family. I still remember talking to him before he passed away and all he could think about was his offline work. It is very sad when work totally takes over one's life and it makes you question the price of success whether offline or online.

My ideal goal is to spend more quality time with the family, do some charity work to help others and earn the same amount of income but by doing a 4 hour week. All I need now are some great IM blueprints to achieve my goals.

You can have all the wealth in the world but if you are not healthy enough to enjoy it, what is the real point?

I guess as entrepreneurs we have all gone through this cycle.

What I decided to do was to shift my hours and try to get an hour or so of R&R everyday.

Trust me this helped increase my productivity. It cleared my brain. I was thinking more clearly and implementing things that I had put aside for years!

Another thing about keeping healthy or fit... is that you have to have that drive and determination, and the change has to come from within. All the exterior things don't mean much. You want to change the way you see life. You want to change your relationships. You want to make your workplace better. You want to be happier.

Once people discover that they can change their bodies, they can also change their whole lives. Did you notice that? Isn't that why we became entrepenuers in the first place? To take back financial control of our lives away from bosses and managers.

Getting in shape will make you more confident. Make you believe in yourself more. You'll feel like you can do things you would have never thought to do before.

You are doing a difficult thing, improving your life. Trying to get control of your life and feel empowered.

You don't want to come back because you have seen the other side. Once you get going, once you get the momentum going, once you start looking better, once you start feeling better, you don't want to stop. You want to keep exercising, to keep looking good and feeling good.

It all comes from inside. Everything you do, everything you are, how you handle everything that happens to you is your responsibility. So if you want to change, look inside. When you decide to change from the inside, the outside will fall into place.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Works for everyone, and even non-entrepreneurs go through that cycle.

You are required to work not only "hard", but also "smart". If you just work "hard", then you may sacrifice your health. For some people, working hard is an important requirement to become success. For the rest, they could become success without working "hard", but in "smart" way.

If you have been working hard, and still not produced the result what you expect, then just take some time what you have been doing all this time. I am sure you will all your work are in "not smart" way.

There were a time when i worked 16 hours a day to earn money. Even though at that time to do not feel tired or exhausted but my body took the toll later. I swore that i would never do that again and i would take better care of my own health. My family depends on me and i must stay healthy.

    Work smarter, not harder.

Thank you for sharing your experience WarrenPeterson!

Sometimes, for wanting to make more money we sacrifice our health and even our lives (family, friends ...).

It is very important to know what you want but do not get it at all costs.

I think you say it all with this sentence:

You owe it to yourself to give you good health! And, your success will be greater in the long run, when you are healthy.

    Have a nice day!

Thank you for the gentle reminder.

I am currently spending lots of time on the computer and there are times when I feel that I am not being productive.

Being efficient in work is better than spending long hours in front the computer.

No health means no chance to enjoy the money.
