Want would you like to see in a personal development course?

I'm currently crafting a complete personal development course. It's almost done, about 85% now. But following the advice from Jeff Walker I want to really try to only create something that "the market" wants.

Now I realize that the mind warrior subforum is not necessarily "the market" for a personal development course. But thinking about it a lot lately, I think I want to produce something that could also be of value for people who, like me, building their own internet-based business.

So I would love to hear what you would expect in a personal development course?

What would be your personal #1 question that such a course or guide should answer or help you to get?

PS. I'd appreciate any comments on that. My current personal development site is linked in my signatur.

WARNING: Long and drawn out response to follow!

The thing about the market your targeting is that everyone who actually really needs and can benefit from it doesn't know they need it, let alone what they would actually want from such a course. That stage of learning where as Tony Robbins says "they don't know that they don't know." But If I had to chime in, I would say complimentary software to help schedule my day with hard deadlines and some kind of unique anchoring techniques to keep me moving forward.

I know this is confirmation bias; but I originally was interested in that niche as well, but when I went through the US Army Special Operations Center for Enhanced Performance all the guys in the course were super committed and excellence driven, they all were the top 1% of the 1% and the crazy thing is we had VERY PRESTIGIOUS guest speakers and lecturers for several WEEKS, and I swear during the breaks I was the only one excited to go back in the room and taking notes like crazy. It's still a mystery to me why some people feel like modeling success is necessary and some blow it off completely.

So I guess my question to you is this; have you narrowed down your demographics yet? I'm talking laser focused Frank Kern style? Just curious!

Komsat, thanks for your input. I wouldn't necessarily say that people don't know they need it. There are plenty of people searching for information about how to better themselves, especially regarding focus, clarity, goals, procrastination, self-confidence, productivity, time-management, spirituality. I have those on my blog already. Would they buy? We'll see. But look at the amount of self-help literature that sells quite well. There are probably people who do not look, but I'm certain that there are a lot of seekers of information to improve themselves. (I.e. why is this mind-warrior forum here? ;-))

One pattern that I see is that people are so focused on one thing and they know what they want, and I guess that is true in your example, that they don't feel the need to look for more information. Those are probably not the clients for a course. They are on their path. Maybe later in life they get questions where they will seek for new input.

Which brings me to the target group. I identified two big groups: 1) is young (20s) and just starting out to rock the world. they are actively seeking information that helps them to get better. 2) is a bit older (30-40s) and has some experiences and also some possible drawbacks, possibly even a major change in life (divorce, job-switch, kids left home...). They are searching for new ways to master and enjoy life. Also a lot of people realize that in order to get more out of life, earn more money, find a better mate... they have to become better and invest in themselves first.

The question about the specific area is there. Personal Development is a wide topic. Some of the most successful past courses are still pretty broad. I think about Personal Power II from Anthony Robbins. With books you have classics like "Think and Grow Rich" which is basically a personal development course, with the intent to make money while growing personally. 7 habits by Stephen Covey is a complete framework as well. I think it's doable to do a broader course.

Of course a very focused course is also doable and has been done (i.e. Wake up productive from Eben Pagan or books on Focus (Jack Canfield, zenhabits) and Goals or Self-Confidence (Brian Tracy).

      What do you think?

I agree with KomSat that you need to be more specific about your course, as Personal Development is a pretty large niche. Don't try to be all things to all people.

If you really want to know what most people wants, how about run a survey?

Great idea. I already did 2 surveys. But I didn't wanted to spoil that information here.

What I'm really asking is what you, as internet-marketers with an interest for developing the mind for success, would like to see in a personal development course?

What is your #1 mind problem you like to get resolved?

So we are your target market? Are you planning a personal development course for internet marketers?

If not, it doesn't make sense to survey us.... we are guessing what your eventual target market will want just as you are.... Only your actual target market can tell you.

I'm really curious in how you are going to "craft a complete personal development course." I've been a therapist for 35+ years, developed a number of workshops, done much writing, etc. I'm working on a comprehensive program now that will address one way to grow and develop.

Who is your target? A course for the 20-30 age group will be very different than the 40-50 group or the 50-60 group.

As to developing something the market wants in this area... very few people want personal development. They want what they will get from development. People come to my office or work with me by phone because they are in pain about something.

Think of the guy whose wife told him continually that she wanted to communicate with him and him with her. She begged him to go with her to a therapist. The only time he went was when she left him and by then it was too little too late.

Also, what are your skills in leading someone through personal development? Focus on your skills, your strengths.

Think of any kind of marketing... who is your target, what is their pain, how will you get them through it, what is the benefit.

    Best of luck to you!

Yes, I can't outline the whole course obviously, but it is also only one way to grow, it's a system to grow consciously. My approach is asking about the essentials that have the biggest impact and are almost necessities in conscious personal development and then building a guidance as a step-by-step system. It's not primarily a pain-reliefer, although that might be a side-effect. It's primarily for people who want to be successful and personally strong with the skills and techniques to get clarity, focus, vision, goal-oriented and yet balanced.

Coming back to the original question of the thread:

Komsat, you basically said you want some kind of sophisticated productivity tool?!
Also, I didn't really understood your reason for losing interest in the personal development niche. Was it because you saw so many ambitious people not having interest in it?

I would look forward hearing more answers of what others would want to get in their personal development. Thanks.

PS. CathyAnn, I read in another thread that it is focus and persistence for you!? ;-)

        Ahh, expanding consciousness... wonderful.

For me in getting my business going, yes, it's focus and persistence. On the personal development side, I participate in dissolving any congested energy limiting me. I am continually working on my own personal growth, which, I'm sure, that most if not all people who come to this area do. Of course, that means focus and persistence!

I'm a mind-body therapist and energy healer working with clients to achieve health, wealth and happiness. I assist them in moving past the emotional and mental blocks which are promoting self-sabotage. Using various energy based tools we work on eliminating limiting beliefs and replacing them with supportive beliefs. There is more, but basically that's what I help people do.

I wish you the best. This world needs as many tools as possible to expand consciousness so that more people will be attracted to a method which works best for them.

Just thought of something... regarding "pain" and consciousness...

The pain for people who want to expand consciousness are those who know there is more, know they are more but can't find out how to get there.

CathyAnn, thanks for the input. So when I understand it right, your work is basically grounded in changing the limits and the energies behind them. That's very fundamental and I have a similar big part in my course.

Komsat, ok that's also like total groundwork. I'll have 3 Modules and the first is this kind of foundation. So we'll see.

Regarding target market: honestly I'm still not 100% certain how people in different states in their life will respond. I described the main data I have briefly above. I did surveys on my personal development blog and the audience is yet pretty much all over the board (up to a certain degree). I will definitely do lot's of more testing with PPC and Facebook traffic. Right now that's what I got.
The course as it is, is there to change and improve lifes and also packed with tools to do things like vision-creation and subsequent goals and plans. I'm pretty sure ambitious people, like in the internet marketing world, can profit from it. I personally would have bought the course, especially 5-10 years earlier in my life for sure. So yes, I think people in this subforum, who are open to improving themselves in order to achieve and also live consciously, could be part of the target market.

Here's my thing, if you target the early 20's they tend to not value the advice given to them. Specifically they are not willing to spend any money on the products in my very limited case studies. Before I joined Special Operations I was on the conventional side of the Army, which means I was a Platoon Sergeant, etc. This meant I was a glorified baby sitter for a ton of 18 - 24 year olds, I have a RAVING fan base lol. But here's the thing I had to trick them in to overlapping the success mind set they needed on to the actual thing, hobby, task they were doing. And that has worked for me so far.

So here's my challenge to you Thumoney, If I had the time to make an exhaustive course it would feature tools that would help me essentially brainwash myself into defaulting to performance enhancing behaviors. Subliminal messages etc. Pull out all the stops, set up a full no holds barred curriculum. Because I noticed the biggest changes in my life when I consistently and without fail exposed myself to those teachings or situations. If you come up with that let me know, I would be glad to buy it and hopefully sell it on my Personal Development site as well.

P.S. I haven't given up on it, I'm just giving you some insight on who not to target lol. I thought they would be a great demographic, turns out not so much!
