Frank Kern - Spotting NLP / Positioning Exercise.

Realize that NLP isn't a "technique" but a way of communicating with people. Once you master NLP, its not difficult to use on the fly. Although I believe there is a TON of scripting in this video. My brother uses it in face to face sales, and is a killer salesman. I use it in my marketing anytime I'm trying to sell something. I personally think NLP / positioning are the 2 most powerful skills any marketer can learn.

So in a futile attempt of my own, I will try to explain what Frank Kern is doing on a subconscious level. So other people can use these concepts in their marketing. Remember. The pillars of NLP AND psychology are based on the theory that 7% of communication is done verbally. And that 93% of communication is done nonverbally, or "subcommunicated". There is also lots of research done on this. But for the sake of time, we won't be covering any.

First, his LOGO bears the exact same shape of the great seal of the United States of America. This is obviously a visual credibility anchor.

:46 seconds - "Endless summer" on screen in background = Visual anchor.

2:34 - Regarding the media, "its completely false", = Shift credibility from media to himself.

4:22 - "I think one" - (product launch) = Demonstrating false vulnerability. Self depracating humor is also a great way to demonstrate false vulnerability. There is a whole science behind why this is smart to do. Frank Kern admits he uses typos on purpose. He also admits he uses bad grammar on purpose. Doing this is the only way he can build effective rapport with his market. Try to sound perfect, and thats a great way to crush rapport.

6:51 - "Big companies doing appparently, very stupid stuff" = credibility frame shift, he then uses mcdonalds as an example of all places! Without use of the word "apparently", that statement would have caused notable resistance.

6:59 - "Learned this from Dan Kennedy" = Name dropping. Most marketers already understand this and its overused imo.

7:23, 8:08, 8:30 - "18.5 million users", "spends a fortune", "already confused trying to tell you about it" - all positioning here, Frank Kern is a master at positioning & shifting credibility.

11:00 - "We've established that...." In NLP this is considered an embedded command. The reality is HE has established that big businesses spends a lot of money on "stupid stuff". He uses a lot of humor as a great way to build rapport, so you don't disagree with what he's saying. But big business also spends a lot of money on smart stuff. He casually leaves these facts out. Obviously wouldn't jive with how he's trying to position himself.

11:14 - "In competing against them (facebook/mcdonalds LOL) you have a dramatically unfair advantage". Once again, Kern is a master in positioning.
"If you refuse to do stupid shit" - building rapport, etc etc.

12:13-12:15 - "I don't think its that bad, but clearly people have been effected by it". This is a huge demonstration of value. Kern is SUBCOMMUNICATING that he is immune to a bad economy.

14:44 - Making you conscious of his bad grammar on purpose. Builds rapport. You also would never assume that this was all planned out.

15:34 - 15:39 - "The way to break this cycle is to realize that not everybody in the world is suffering". DID YOU NOTICE how his camera man casually zoomed in the second he said that? Did you also notice how he slowed down his speech pattern?

15:56 - In NLP this is called "kinisthetic anchoring". He says "the money has transfered from segment B to segment A", when he says "segment A he scratches HIMSELF. You can doubt this stuff all day long but these subconcious anchoring techniques are taught in the seduction world. And they are highly effective. Years ago David D use to talk about these things outside of seminar rooms.

16:06 - (Said slowly once again) "point being, there are still lots of people out there with plenty of money". Again, this is classic anchoring in NLP. Everytime he speaks slowly and zooms in & out that is called a "pattern". He is able to anchor things into your mind by repeating this process over and over.

19:06 - Visual anchoring once again

Ok, this is taking way too long. Pay attention to how he speaks, his comparisons, how the camera zooms in and out. You will notice A LOT of patterns.

25:42 - when zoomed out "you can fly regular coach"
25:43 - when zoomed in "you can fly first class or you can fly private". Once again, this is visual anchoring. These things fly right into your subconscious mind.


25:47 - "Coach is gonna cost you .... err idk $500 bucks or something I REALLY DON'T KNOW". (he's doing this on purpose)
25:50 - "First class is gonna cost you around $1500" (again, intentional)
25:52 - "Private is gonna cost you $50,000". You see what he did here? He demonstrates a lot of confusion as to what coach costs. Then he demonstrates less confusion as to what first class costs. Then somehow, magically, he knows EXACTLY how much private costs.

Hmmm.. I wonder why? lol.

Anyway, I realize this stuff confuses some people. But trust me, NLP is one of the most powerful things you can learn to do. The least you can do is pick up a book and do some reading.

    I once watched some big time Forex product owners produce a video hyping their upcoming launch. Every move was crafted and not the slightest gesture or image demonstrating their wealth was left to chance.

    And, as every good Texas Hold 'em player knows, most people don't have a clue, the tells they show. Just knowing about NLP puts you at an advantage.

        If you're serious I would start at the beginning, because I think it entails more than what was just posted here. You have to first define who you are talking to what type of thinker they are.

        The structure of magic part 1 & 2 by Bandler & Bandler
        Frogs into princes by Bandler & Bandler

        Its really all not as complicated as people would make you think like I always say, all you are doing is making a friend when you make a friend then you can sell them. The people already have some idea on how much they will spend.

    @redshifted. I've clicked the thanks button but want to add here, thanks for trailing this out. It's good to read a qualative post around NLP and it's use by Mr. Kern

    I have bought his book ( the one with the question mark on it), and am on his list ( probably segmented to 'a buyer',) and read it again and again.

    As a busking magician, I have some understanding of the psychology of sales, and am always open to learning more about positioning, and credibility.

    I always watch Franks' videos, and always open his emails. As he does for others I'm sure, I feel he is speaking to me, even when he tells of how that comes about.

    Many malign him, probably because of his history, but as a teacher ( ie watching and listening to how he does what he does), I for one have learned some things. Your post has made it even easier...

    Don't know if this wee 'trick' is helpful. When doing my show ( busking), and talking Nout the money, I start subtly nodding my head, and this does help generate a fatter$$ hat.

    LOL! You're over-analyzing and seeing things that are just not there man! You're creating your own myth in your mind. I'm 100% positive Kern didn't even consider half of the stuff you mention.

      NLP as a marketing concept is one level above casting a voodoo spell to increase sales.

      Look at any ad campaign from any year (1850 if you want to go back that far) and something you could define as NLP is somehow in every one of them. So just what is NLP if it's already inadvertently all around us? I'll tell you what it is.... snake oil sold to newbie marketers looking for a magic bullet.

      Exactly. Frank Kern is just being Frank Kern. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. People just act a certain way and you can't zero in on little things to replicate that you deem of importance and expect success to follow. You can't be Frank Kern, and Frank Kern can't be you.

        Exactly. Frank Kern is just being Frank Kern. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. People just act a certain way and you can't zero in on little things to replicate that you deem of importance and expect success to follow. You can't be Frank Kern, and Frank Kern can't be you.

        Back in the early 90s I sat with groups of business men and talked about how to market and sell more. We never really discussed psychology at all and definitely didn't touch on NLP at least not directly anyways. We only discussed what motivates people to buy.

        Somehow years later even though a lot of what we discussed became mainstream a lot of it ended up being under the banner of NLP and Psychology. Go Figure.

        Now snake oil and voodoo I would say not at least not in the sense of what the avg person assumes them to be. It's all just human nature psychology if you will. Many of the same methods that have worked ages ago still work today without all the Labels.

    Where you are getting confused, is because he is so good at it and you don't seem to know a thing about it.

    TRUST ME, I've been studying NLP since 2003. I meet tons of people who can not understand NLP, and have no idea when its being used on them. Kern is a trained salesmen, he has talked about NLP countless times, he uses it in ALL his videos, and is a master at using it. So please, do not ever tell me I'm reading too deep into anything he does. Jeff Walker is another one who uses a ton of NLP. Then there are various very well known copywriters on this forum who understand it, and know it when they see it.



    You would probably say this isn't NLP either. I learned NLP in the seduction community and practiced it 3 nights a week for 4 years straight. Kern ALSO learned a great deal of NLP from the seduction community. These guys know how to use it verbally in real life interaction better than most marketers do.

    I know Cajun, have seen him on seduction forums, and he is another master at NLP. The main technique he's using here is creating "false time constraints" with his body language and verbally. His opener is also a canned line to drop resistance. Specifically, he is handling objections before she even has the chance to make them. Then notice his evasive body language. You can see him using this more strongly in other segments. He keeps looking around but engaging her head on at periodic intervals. When he does engage her, he makes strong eye contact and gives her his full attention. Then does "take aways". This type of push pull dynamic as subtle as it looks, is strong. It keeps the girl on her toes as she feels in her body like he wants to leave (raises his percieved status), but becomes confused because he keeps engaging her.

    He's also using a verbal time constraint when he says "I'm just on my way out". He's lying. He does that so she drops her resistance, creates urgency, then he goes for the close. He also engages the friends the SECOND he notices them, to drop their resistance. If he doesn't do that, he risks the chance of the friends breaking his frame. NLP teaches you to hold strong, dominant frames, and not allow anyone to break them. It teaches you to cut off people before they even have a chance to interject. Not to be rude, but its all about environment. He faces the potential of friends becoming cockblocks. You always need to deal with objections before they happen.

    To a normal person, he just looks confident. And honestly this was a pretty lazy execution. So watch his other segments where he using more noticeable techniques. But I've worked with these people for years, so I know how they practice, and I know how to spot NLP better than most people I know. A lot of these guys get so good at it that it becomes part of their natural identity. Once you reach that level, you are unstoppable whether its sales or seduction... it doesn't matter.

      Holy Molly... The level of BS is those voodoo Jedi mind tricks is so high that it is scary. It is basically people beliving their own fantasy (religion?).

      Anyway, I will let it go now. It is cool by me if people wanna chase unicorns in their marketing. I will simply continue doing what I have always been doing: spot a need/desire in the market and offer a solution to it (see my signature). Works wonders and there is no need to be a Jedi to implement it.

    I think NLP exists and using it in your marketing can fall in a Gray zone of ethics. Frank Kern’s videos are full of NLP but I don’t think he does it all deliberately. Many of this comes naturally because of his long experience with Internet Marketing.
