"What if money didn't matter?"

If money didn't exist, we'd be using something else as a medium of exchange. So we'd like be doing whatever business we're in to acquire more of whatever we're using as a medium of exchange.

Why would any form of exchange exist if it didn't matter? That's where the video falls flat on its face.

As for my answer.

I love helping people with problems. I love coming up with solutions. So being a life coach or business consultant is what I would do.

My current job is handling in house internet marketing. Basically I consult but for one company only. It's not quite perfect but very close to what I truly want to do.

I've never been on to live a life based on what others wanted.

I grew up on welfare. That allowed me to see that really you can live a nice life not even working. So I never feared not having money because I knew the safety net was there and I saw how on that net you could stay home and play video games and watch cable (net wasn't around in the 80 when i was a kid on welfare). But by the time I was 20 I had made more money per year than my mom (single parent) ever had and all I was doing was following jobs I enjoyed.

In high school I decided I wanted to be a teacher. Since I loved helping people and wanted summers off. You'll hear teachers talk about how hard it is. But the truth is they make it hard. The teachers who inspired me talk to me about what they really did. With proper time management it really is a 7 to 4 Mon to Fri job. So I went to college for less than a year and realized I didn't want to do anything that required college. Because even though I would have enjoyed being a teacher I wouldn't have enjoyed 4 more years of pointless homework (I could and likely still can ace most tests without having to study) and wasted time.

At 19 I got my first job (not a fan of working) at Wal-mart. It was full time (minus like 3 or 4 weeks a year I had a set 40hr work week) and I made $1 over minimum wage (know what you are worth and never take less). While there I realized I kind of liked this retail thing. Retail management allows you to coach people professionally and allows you to do visual marketing (better known as merchandising). So I left Walmart to be a retail manager (walmart over works their managers or at least did back then).

But over time realized that while I was making good money I didn't like the hours. At times they were long and you would go from days to nights and back.

But over time I learned that since I was good at consulting I was good at selling. All selling is really is helping people buy things that benefit them. So finally I made it to a commission based retail store and became a sales manager which luckily had a long period of time as a trainee where I got to sell the same as the commissioned sales people.

That allowed me to see first hand that I could sell and make the same or more money and yet be way happier. But the hours still sucked so I found an RV dealership that was only open till 5 (6 two days a week during summer).

Of course while there I was able to give advice to the owners and we talked about the internet and how you could market better on the internet. Which lead over the years to more and more of my job being the marketing consultant halves.

I am a great example of just doing things you love. I get bored so I need to change it up every few years (sometimes months) so of course my course evolved.

I made money along the way because not only did i enjoy what I did but I was good at it. If I ever got tired of a job I quit. Two of those jobs I quit without having another job lined up. And people who know me know I have no savings so I didn't bring my own safety net. Most people would be afraid to do that. Because they worry about money vs. being happy.

Being happy is more important. And if you have confidence in yourself you know you will land on your feet. I always have.

So I have always done what makes me happy but in a way that will allow me to live the life I want (corvettes and other sports cars have high monthly payments). It wasn't hard. But to get started I had to stop listening to people who told me what I should do.

Here is a tip for the young ones on the board. College is useless for the vast majority of careers. Before you do it decide if what you want to do with your life requires it. You can name most of those careers off the top of your head (engineer, teacher, doctor, lawyer, etc). If it doesn't are you going to college because you enjoy formal learning? If you can't answer yes to one of those questions you really shouldn't go to college. You will never get those 4 years back and time is worth more than money. Plus you will likely end up with $20k plus of debt and I am sure you can think of many things that you would enjoy spending $20k more on.

So I know you can make a living doing what you want as long as you are good at it.

I hang out on this forum because I love marketing and consulting. But I do see a lot of people on this forum who are here for the wrong reasons. They want to make money online but they do not love marketing. Some don't even love tech. There isn't really a reason besides "money" for them to be here. And even that really is the dream of "money for no effort" that they have bought into.

If money didn't matter I think we would trade friendship and compassion. Whats wrong with trading an item for an item of equal value? If we take out the intermediate paper promise I believe we would be happier and more compassionate.

The problem is human need for betterment and ranking against others... How do we achieve it? More money.

In regard to your question: No I would not be promoting businesses goods/services if money did not matter.

If money was not an issue, I would still publish information online, I just would not attempt to monetize it as much as I am doing. Maybe I wouldn't try to monetize it at all.

Once you are truly confident in yourself and understand that the worst really isn't that bad you can.

But even then it is effort at times our mind will let us stay in a bad situation because fear of change is scary.

I always tell people to get past that just think about the worst that could happen. Is it really that bad?

In some ways starting my life on welfare and in public hosing gave me a unique view of this. The worst isn't that bad. I had food, friends, toys, and even a NES. Honestly some of the happiest moments of my life were the "worst". So why would I fear that?

Quantify the "worst" and you can put that fear away. Then just follow the paths that make you happy. We don't need as much money as people think we do to be happy.

Then the world would be heaven I guess. Everything disputatious in this world is only for money.

The first distinction I'd make is between Internet Marketing (The make money online niche) and online marketing (marketing your business online). There's so much rubbish told and sold as internet markeing, catering to the Shiny Object Syndrome addicts.

I'd only be involved in Internet Marketing if I could really add value for people.

Online Marketing is a different matter. Sure, I'd continue to market online even if I didn't need to make money anymore, which is how I interpreted the original question.

And I'd continue as a hypnocoach, helping people to unleash the potential of their minds.

I'm on the warrior forum because I want to learn how to make enough money so that I can get to the point where money doesn't matter.

Also, IM is fun for me and is part of my ideal lifestyle.

If money didn't matter, I'd still blog, help people, connect with people, and learn.

That's an interesting question. Actually, I hit the point a few years ago through simplification (reducing my living expenses) where I can live off of my investments. I live in Hawaii & spend most time outdoors, so it doesn't cost a lot to live a great life.

I decided to continue Internet Marketing because it does help me with an important mission. Empowering people. Money is part of our reality here on this planet at this time (until we all learn to cooperate & share the abundant resources on the planet).

Traditionally only the newspapers, goverment, radio stations, tv stations etc... had the power to send out their message to the masses. Now the AVERAGE person has that power through the Internet.

I want to empower thousands of people to build their own list of 10,000-100,000+. This way they can get people collaborating in various ways. There are lots of things that don't cost money (planting vegetables for instance is almost free).

This is a new paradigm that I believe will ultimately change the world economy & possibly even help us evolve past the need for money. We're still not there, but things are obviously changing.

Internet Marketing is simply a way to deliver value to people through the Internet. As long as your produce is making people's lives better you'll have as much money as you want. The more people you help, the wealthier you'll be. Not just in monetary terms, but also in the quality of your relationships

I think a better question to ask is, "If money didn't matter what would you be doing for others"

For me I would be a musician, (instead I am a web designer because it is almost impossible to make a lot of money as a musician)

This question is pretty pointless and goes against nature of things. Mankind has been greedy from the start. A lot of us may not admit it but we all are greedy to a degree.

If money didn't matter then we all would be taking all we can from each other. There would be no barriers or lines. I'm not buying the whole "I'm a good guy and I help people" crap.

I hear ya but money does matter. In fact its one of the most important things besides love. Walk onto the bank and try to deposite some love. Call your electric company and ask if they take love for payment. Unfortunately it does matter and we need to be open to except as much of it as possible. Ya if there was no $ then we would still be using the barter system and chances are the internet would never have existed...

But ya the main reason why I love IM is not because of the money but it's the freedom that comes with making money on the internet. Money is just a by product

Well they say if you do what you love doing you become a master. People pay for your knowledge.

Asking that question is one of the best ways to find your passion.

Ask any "really" successful person how they got to where they are and they'll tell you they followed their passion and the money eventually came.

I've seen this video and heard the messages before and they still resonate.

I think some people might be taking this too cerebrally and therefore could potentially be missing those messages. On the other hand it could just be that the video and messages don't resonate which is okay.

The key point the video is trying to make comes at the end in the question that's asked.

Of course not ... if money didn't exist, then no one would be selling products, so there would be nothing to market.

I believe the video clip is saying that anyone who is financially struggling with resources tend to find a way to be a slave to money. The talk is not really about money but the illusion that we are a slave to money. If we become masters of our trades or skills then money would never be problem. But sad to say many would rather be a slave to it than pursue the dreams they always want to be and at the end of the day every person would regret following money rather than their dreams.

The vid clip said that if there is no money,then, what hinders us from our dreams? Would we want to go for our dreams and live a happy life? Surely, nothing would ever stop us from becoming who want to be. So I believe pursue your dreams, live up to it and become contented but never satisfied and don't ever be greedy. Share whatever you have because you never new you could also be a channel of light and hope to someone who is in need.

Money is just an expression of value, actually we are trading value, by the means of money.

The main immediate need for humans in order to stay alive is to have access to food and water. From there in my opinion it's having shelter. If this could be accomplished without money (in this system) then that would be great wouldn't it?

The videos message: "stop doing what you don't like and start doing what you like" is great, but if you live in a system that requires money to survive, and skydiving off a cliff, or running accross a beach in slow motion does not pay the bills, then the only solution is to either continue the search of finding a way to make money by doing what you like, or continue finding yourself at a job you hate. Most people live a life of the latter.

I ask this question all the time in my private mindset sessions...

"If I was to give you five hundred billion dollars, what would you do with your life?"

The answer I'm looking for is "Indulge my hobbies and pursue my passions".

If there were no money, I guess I will be helping people all day long, I mean sick people and people in need I think it will make me happy.

I'd collect stamps.

If I had 5 Billion dollars, I'd probably try to make the 6th and because of some weird conditioning from society or religious ideas instilled in most people, they would categorize me as evil or greedy. As long as you're trading a valuable thing or idea, there's nothing wrong with making money.

If money didn't matter, I'd like to have a sea side resort but sadly no one will give that up for free until I trade a certain amount of information and energy for it. I see it as increasing the efficiency of the world a tiny percent. I love internet marketing. I love making websites and programs that make me money. I'm tired of people asking me if I'd still do this if money didn't matter. Would you still workout if working out didn't matter? Does that mean you should completely stop working out and enjoy eating whatever whenever? No it doesn't because that's the difference between reality and a hypothetical.

Doing what you love is nice but at some point you have to stop being selfish and do something that society finds valuable and hopefully you can find a balance between what you love and what society finds valuable, if not, learn to love it!

I also want to point out that a lot of this arises because people have some type of guilt to making making money which is why most of them keep bringing this up.
"Isn't it bad to do something for the money?"
"Doesn't it mean I'm taking it from someone else?"
and so on. I would do whatever it takes to change that mentality first. If you have issues with making money while part of you is trying to make money on the internet, you're gonna have a baad time.

Money is not the point. I think we are all trying to overcome self-imposed and external limitations... and many times money looks like a good indicator of whether we have done it. For example, when I think of starting a part-time gig I'm 1] trying to overcome or improve my experience of making a living solely through a pay cheque 2] thinking of new ways to solve a problem of a business owner 3] trying to make use of my computer savvy etc. and in all the cases if I make money it indicates I've achieved the above points.

If you have anyone depending on you for their existence, there is absolutely every reason for you as the provider to in fact,provide.

So, even if money was not the base of exchange, I would in fact still have the responsibility,
no matter what the "currency".

This is a pleasant exercise in the imaginary, even if it were true, we would all be doing something to provide for ourselves and others

Well, I do believe that by wanting to earn money is a “Desire”. Yes, as simple as that!

Now about the question:

First is, I want to make it clear that this question is hypothetical in sense. I mean clearly, “medium of exchange” is part of human nature.

But if that happens, I think my answer would be a big fat NO! As a matter of fact, there won’t be such things as business or marketing or finance. The list goes on and on and on…. Never ending!

I think my counter-question is what is the essence of Marketing?

I saw that video a couple of weeks ago. I would love to be able to support my children and offer them this as their future instead of the, go to school, get a job etc. Most people work so hard and can barely afford to live these days!

I'd probably still be doing some sort of marketing, because it's fun and I'm able to help a lot of people. Now if only I have the intelligence/brains...

What would you do if there was no air? To take part in this exercise here is my 2 cents.
There will always be a medium of exchange like there will always be air as long as people are on the planet.

If money is your motivation you are doing things for all the wrong reasons. People throughout history have chased money only to be disappointed.

I build houses. I love construction and the results it produces as an end product. My love for the process shows in the end results. I sell them to families or rent them.

I grow corn on my farm. For my efforts I want to produce more corn than I plant (yield). I feed it to my chickens and pigs to produce the best meat my family can get.

I sell each with the expectation of profit (yield). My motivation is not the money. Building and farming are my motivation. In exchange for my efforts money is the by product commonly referred to as profit.

There is no such thing as.... Internet Marketing. Marketing is marketing whether online or off. The major difference in how we apply marketing principals is the business model we choose. No matter what you produce marketing will be necessary the same as money ( medium of exchange) and air for survival.

Here's another perspective...

I am a real estate investor. I have money so money is not a motivation to me.

I only do things I love to do and learn how to make a profit doing it. For example: If I loved fishing I would set up a fishing charter service. I would love to take people fishing, show them what to do to catch fish.

My greatest profit would be seeing the smiles on their faces when they caught a cooler full. For this day of fun I would collect my fee. Money or no money... I would make a profit doing what I loved to do. If you do this...YOU WILL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE!

Personally, I love being on my farm.Riding the tractors and messing with the animals. My profit center is letting others hunt on the farm. Talking hunting is a wonderful past time for me.

I will not do anything I don't like to do no many how much money it pays.

If money didn't matter, I would not bother doing silly things. I would rather concentrate on spiritual facts and focus on after lives. And make sure I make everyone happy everywhere.

Its universal truth that everything done by the human being are about 80% for money. A person may drive a taxi, doing a job, business, we are here at IM. so all these are for obtaining money and to fulfill their basic needs which is impossible without money.
May be some people doing activities like charity organization but not all people. I think people should admit that money is necessary and all we are doing is for money.
If we see then love, friendship, relations are also mostly done by the people while keep in mind the position of the partner.
My wording may have harsh someone emotions but its true and should think about it.

If money didn't matter I would still do the Internet Marketing things I do now ... I just wouldn't be as stressed about what 'some' people (non-Intenet Marketers) think about what I do, and about the times when I compare the cost of some marketing methods to the low return rate.

What I got from this video, is that there's more to life than just money. So the question was then asked what if money didn't matter? I say it wouldn't matter if money didn't matter.

Money is simply a tool used to properly distribute the resources that exist. Another system would take the place of money and the same question would arise once again. However to not take the question literally and understand the implications of it, my answer would be there would be no difference.

By removing money or the need of money, you aren't removing the desire to obtain it. And by it I mean power! Power and money is interchangeable for that's whats obtained when it's accumulated.

In this world power is used to obtain resources, by any means applicable. And if death and the sickness of human life is what's needed to obtain it, then so be it. In order for the implication of this video and this question to truly be answered, or rather for such an ideal to be possible, we must change our way of thinking.

We must change the way we feel towards calamity, genocide, starvation, and manifest those feelings into actions toward a solution. If human life is our priority, if the life of your neighbor outweighs the cost of your cell phone bill, then and only then would money not matter.

It is people who matter. In fact, it is life. We instinctively seek power and equate it with money. If we transition what it means to have power from something bad to something good, then obtaining power would be beneficial. What if power dictated, who can save the most lives today? Or who can feed the most hungry? Or who could cure this rare disease first?

Money isn't the root of all evil, it's ignorance. By truly understanding what matters, and spreading that knowledge to the people. The world will be in a state of benevolence oppose to malevolence. Thus prioritizing every living soul over money.

In fifteen to twenty years, we could reach a point where money does not matter. Futurists say that by then we will be able to create artificial intelligence more intelligent than the entire human race combined, and a little after that, capable of increasing its own intelligence, or of creating other artificial intelligences more intelligent than itself. This is the point of singularity. If our creation is benign, then it will solve our material needs by creating what NASA used to call the Von Neumann machine, or the Santa Claus machine -- a machine capable of replicating anything including itself.

With material needs solved, the only remaining thing at a premium is creativity.

If money were non existent, then I don't think marketing of any kind would exists so Internet Marketing wouldn't exist.

If money wasn't a problem (i.e. I was already rich) then I would probably spend my time similar to what I was doing in highschool. I would skateboard and/or snowboard a lot, smoke a lot of weed, and try to get laid as much as possible; I would also go to college for fun and take classes I was interested in, and maybe learn computer programming and hacking for fun.

My dream was actually to become a professional skateboarder when I was younger but that never happened. And that is kind of the problem with what he says in the video, to "follow your passion" so to speak. He is suggesting to do what you really love and eventually you will become good enough at it that you will get paid to do it (I think that's what he was said toward the end of the video). But the problem is only very very few people become good enough at what they love that they can make a living at it. For example a lot of kids in highschool dream of becoming a professional basketball player, football player, rapper, or whatever, but only very few actually are talented enough to make a living with it. And that's why most people end up doing something they don't like, or only somewhat like. They realize they aren't going to achieve their dreams from highschool and so they get a normal job. Or even worse, you are doing what you love and are so good you are ahead of your times and don't make any money, like Van Gogh, he only sold one painting in his life and it was to his brother, he struggled to sell his paintings his entire life.

You are really lucky though if your passion is something academic like computer programming, math, or science, or something you can actually get an advanced degree in and get a good paying job in.

I'd still do marketing. I love being able to coach people I've never met and enjoy that, whether its strategy or on specific software like Magic Submitter, Spin Chimp or Market Samurai (it's what I've been doing for a while now). But my main focus would be: Studying Ninjutsu (and one day teaching) as well as Scuba diving and teaching that. Being under the water is just sooo beautiful and peaceful. If I could grow gills I would.

If money didn't matter then i'd stick to the old barter system, this is the best way also that corruption be stopped in our country other countries as well.

But the way I see it, money is just another tool. Like any tool it's the way we use it. The way we use it is determined by how we understand it.

The economical system has been made complicated so we can't understand it easily, let alone getting rid of it. Meantime, it's setting the rules of most of our lives, and our health. Mind you, a virtual tool... numbers, paper, computers... how disturbing.

What if money didn't matter to you: either you have a lot of it, or none at all. You care because you are involved somewhere in the middle.

If money didn't matter at all today, most of the people wouldn't go to their job and we would quickly need to find something else. Pretty much without electricity, transportation, security, health care, you name it. And almost no food or clean water. Society will have to get a new face through a hard crisis, but I'm sure it would be a more... human one

We could learn a lot from these "primitive" tribes that are treated harshly because the way they think and live is not part of money system. Before they get decimated, too.

For every time we spend money -or earn it- we cast a vote for the way we want things to be.

If money didn't matter, I think there will be other "medium of exchange" or barter will still be used.

I watched a film called "In-Time" that was based around time being a currency. It was fantastic to follow the story, and a very well thought out concept.

But, money does matter ~ @ least for those that have joined this forum. We all have passions, hobbies, etc. I got into IM to make extra money - just another way of marketing products/services. I have been employed for 30 plus years, and have done many part time jobs to supplement my income and this has helped me to pursue "passions" and things I love to do - from composing music to traveling, to been able to volunteer and help out when needed. If money did not matter I am sure I would have not found this great website to help see things in many different colors ~ and i am sure that if money was not a problem, I would be playing guitar @ the beach most everyday, but I am happy to say that I can do this at least during the weekends, because money is what helped me end up in my new home in a little beautiful island in the south Pacific. I would still be doing my passions, and would have (I guess) more time to do them on a regular basis...

Hence, want to continue with IM so that I can help myself pursue my passions - which also includes supporting my Mother and helping 2 of my sisters + economically

Honestly, I love internet marketing. Its a constant challenge that keeps my on my feet and my brain firing on all fronts. Its unique and to claim high end status ship is a true testament to how determined you were to show the world you WILL NOT BE BEATEN!

I enjoy working, so maybe I may still do IM even the money didn't exist.

If there would be no money I guess there would be no animals will live in the forest instead they will stay in every house in order to trade it for goods.

Money never matters.. but Freedom Does..

So.. what's freedom? I'll tell you. It's the ability to enjoy a lifestyle that provides happiness to your family, food, shelter, and the best education. It is the ability to wake up and not have to answer to anyone but yourself.... unfortunately... you must earn money at some point to allow for this freedom to occur. So.. those of us that have graduated from two colleges with a JD/MBA and then suffered in the working world realize how precious freedom really is.. It is something that I rather enjoy, so I most likely would be. I know sometimes we get into this rush where all we see is money, but for me, working can be rather relaxing at times.

Love makes the world go around, my friend. If any sort of "means of exchange" didn't matter, it would be apparently that we would live in order to love others. I believe that deep deep deep....DEEEEP down, this is how to world actually functions. Whatever is the best thing for others is the motivating force behind every action.

Read the first few posts and had a bit of a laugh, some people take things too seriously haha. I didn't click on the link yet, but I have a feeling it's a video with Alan Watts narrating?

In my opinion one of the most important things you should always have in your life is passion. Any kind of passion. What makes you excited to wake up every morning? What makes you excited to live every day? It can be music, visual arts, dance, writing, reading, and so on.
The trick is finding a career where you are able to pursue your passion, yet still contribute to society (which in turn will allow you to make a living).
I think money is a good thing, I have nothing against it. It's only when money is not distributed fairly (i.e. people get greedy) then there is a problem.

But to answer your question, if money didn't matter, I would still be doing what I am doing now. I'm currently studying a subject that I am passionate about in university with aspirations of working to develop better medical devices (IM is something I'm doing on the side). Physics is genuinely a subject I am passionate about, and it is always a pleasure learning.

The Hungry Mind

If money wouldn't be an option I would like to spend my life doing some extreme sports or any other sports I like. I remember when I was a kid I wanted to become a basketball player. So if money wouldn't be an option I would like to become a great NBA basketball player.

If money is non-existent or doesn't matter, internet marketing will be the least of things that will pop in my mind. The more pressing question is, "What would be its substitute to allow us to survive?"

I have two parts. If money didn't matter I could very well be marketing on the internet to promote a good cause. After all the stuff I promote now is all about helping people.
The second part is the twist to if money didn't matter and that is when you have so much money that money is not a question as to what you'll do. I'd say that founding what you do based on how much money you get is off base. Founding what you do based on truly helping others means that you'd be doing the same thing even if money were not an issue. Doing good really is the key to all this.

Money of course does matter. But I have this vision of everyone in the world being best friends. I think if money were somehow gone it would help that vision. But I don't necessarily think that will happen. I think it all comes down to developing a giving heart. If you are in giving mode when you work, the money doesn't matter. And when you simply do it because you love it, then the money comes much faster. That's been my experience.

If money did not exist or had no matter, than everyone would do things for themselves to get food. When there is money, we try to survive by earning it. So if no money than we would survive to feed ourselves. And people would make exchanges between them as before money existed. Internet marketing would again work and I would be doing it. Because again it would be a matter to promote the things you have or to search for things. As an example I've tomatoes and would like to exchange some of it with cucumbers. Or any other stuff that is needed.

Heck no haha, I only got in this industry to make money. My main passion is game development. But the things ive learned in marketing will carry on with me forever.

If money didn't exist, the world would be a selfish place in my opinion. There would be only subsistence farmers who look after their own family. Tech wouldn't advance over the years and there would be no future flying cars etc. So no, if money didn't exist, I wouldn't be doing internet marketing. Money is my motivation to succeed and live a better life.

But it does matter. End of story. What if we didnt die? What if aliens lived among us?

I understand its fun to fantasize, but back to reality, tomorrow you will be standing at the gasstation filling your tank.

after watching the video, you will be likely to find the answer you are looking for. one things for sure, in such a no-money world, i would do what i love the most " scientist", and everyone should be doing the carrier they love the most as well. unfortunately, in today world, most people only think about earning a lot of money__which is not wrong on its own___they live their entire life without knowing what deep down inside they love to do and which will benefit the society.
i think a better question to ask is " what carrier will you still do even you are not paid a single cent forever for doing it? "

What if money didn't matter...people would probably go crazy doing what they want, spending time with people that they love, and putting more effort on what really matters - intangible things (love, friendship, experiences, you name it).

Money makes the world go round so that's a difficult concept.

If money didn't matter, I would be chilling on the beach all day or just doing something I enjoy.

That question could be asked about any profession. Teachers, lawyers, architects. You name it.

I'd still be doing it if it was fun, if I could treat is a hobby. Otherwise? No. Just like with any other job.
