the #1 Reason People Fail

Procrastination

Being an entrepreneur is hard by default. Very few times do internet entrepreneurs have somebody motivating, holding them accountable, and pressuring them to - as I like to so eloquently say - DO STUFF. It comes with the territory.

Though internet entrepreneurship is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding life journeys one could pursue, it's one that is internally difficult by default. It's one that will bring out every internal demon you know you have and a plethora of ones you didn't know you have.

Unlike the traditional worker/employee job, entrepreneurs need to muster up motivation, accountability, discipline all by themselves. Once conquered or at least controlled, the journey begins and is absolutely incredible.

So my question...
  • Do you procrastinate?
  • If so, why do you think you do?
  • If not, what tools/means/efforts do you employ to help you DO STUFF?

I do not know if it is necessarily procrastination.

I would think more in the lines of Patience. In other wards having the patience to stick things out. To do the little things each and everyday that no one else wants to do.

And having the long term vision that what you are doing now will pay off later .

Just have PATIENCE in doing this!!

I think everybody procrastinates. At least to some degree. Sometimes there's just too much to do and it get's to that overwhelming state where you just say "screw it, I'll do it later"..

My best advice is to take a break once in a while. Sometimes in this business you'll stay up all night, but just because you're working hard doesn't mean your technically working smart.

Take a few minutes off - go for a drive or walk your dog. Come back refreshed and finish up what you were doing. You'll feel better and it will reflect on your work.

I agree with discrat about it not just being procrastination. In the past I have wrote some articles and expected to see results right away and obviously it got me no where!

To succeed in this industry I believe it takes an extreme amount of patience and consistency, and not everyone has that.

I agree with both patience and consistency. I'm glad ae2080 brought consistency up because if you don't have that with your work than it usually isn't that effective, especially in the beginning phases. All the tedious work that has to be done to succeed requires both of those characteristics.

I'm sure it's the same for everyone else going the entrepreneur route, by once people find out what internet marketing really entails, the first thing that comes out of their mouth is how the heck do you have the time and patience for that stuff?

As mentioned earlier, you have to be self-motivated and yes, take a break once in a while to clear your mind! Always a good point RussellK.

RussellK is right, every once in a while, we procrastinate but a little break and a little rest time works.

    Hey Ken,

    Yes I do procrastinate ....

In fact my first WSO is ready to launch..

I think the problem is that I'm afraid if I launch it then
make only few sales.. I'll will get very disappointed because
I spent over 2 months creating it..

So at the meantime I'm focusing on building relationship with
other marketers.. Do you think this is the way to go?

Or should I just launch my first wso now?

      Seriously, go for it...

The sooner you launch, the sooner you learn if your product will be a success... If it ain't, at least you'll know.

That way you can start making another!

Don't be afraid to fail. The only way to get anywhere is to accept that failure is allways an option!

Procrastinate Now!! The reason people fail is usually because of lack of a workable plan. Lack of a clear vision also contributes to failure. And a lack of belief is in there too. In marketing and Sales, not targeting the prospects virtually guarantees failure. Failure simply shows you what isn't working.

I believe procrastination plays a huge part in unsuccessful business ventures. I also think fear of failure holds more people back from "the brass ring". Better to talk a big game than be humbled by a public defeat. Those defeats cause improvement and should be embraced as lessons learned.

The main #1 reason why people fail is that they quit.

The only way to be truly successful at what you do is to NOT QUIT.

Procrastination doesn't = failure, because, EVENTUALLY you will get to it. However, it is pushing through the fog of procrastination and getting things done that get you one step closer.

Yeah I used to have a problem with procrastination.

I think the reason I used to have that problem is trying to get things done on my own and failing so many times before I've ever seen any success at all.

The best advice that I have to offer on this topic is to get a mentor.

Once I got a mentor, someone who would tell me exactly what I need to be doing and then hold me accountable everything start to drastically change for me.

So get a mentor. It's definitely not always the cheapest option by in my experience it is the fastest way to success.

Jersey Shore Cast Member's salaries for 13 episodes !

Snooki, Pauly D, The Situation: Once a headliner, always a headliner. These three all make $150k per episode for Season 6, putting them at the top of the Jersey Shore food chain.

JWOWW: JWOWW is pretty valuable too, earning $100k per episode.

Vinny: The more laid back half of Jersey Shore's best bromance pulls in $90k per episode.

Sammi and Ronnie: Sammi and Ronnie each make $80k per episode. But hey, if you count SamRon as a single character, that means the couple makes $160k per episode. Not bad.

Deena Nicole: Deena only makes $40k per episode. But don't feel too bad for Meatball #2 — remember, she's only been part of the cast since Season 3. Seniority counts for a lot when it comes to reality TV salary.

If you are actually networking with active affiliates in a networking community (not just writing posts and pms through WF here) then I would say it's okay to network a tad and do some prelaunch.

If not (which I suspect) then I say just get it out there.

If it gets 1 sale...go back to the drawing board, change the sales letter, etc and relaunch...

I've taught thousands of people in that space

What people forget is that IT'S NOT THE PRODUCT THAT DETERMINES WHETHER IT'S GOING TO FAIL OR NOT, IT"S EVERYTHING THAT SUPPORTS THE PRODUCT...the sales letter, prelaunch, aff recruitment etc. So if it flops, don't worry, it doesn't mean its a bad product. Perhaps it's just positioned wrong

I think information overload holds back a lot of people. Think about it: There is enough information online (even in this one forum!) to help people quit their job and live life on their own terms. So, information isn't the problem. It's acting on that information, and having the confidence and courage to do so.

Not sure what really is the number one reason why most people fail, one thing for sure is that they are unlucky.

    • That's why Nike's "Just Do It" was and is such a great slogan.

I like the phrase "Carpe Diem Tomorrow", which pokes fun at procrastination.

I think we all procrastinate. I'm a very active DOER. Everything I teach is about taking action. It's simply how stuff gets done. I get so busy doing stuff that I'm occasionally forced to rest.

I think a related problem is being too active. If you don't prioritize & do what's important you can be very active but have the same consequence as procrastination....it doesn't get done.

People procrastinate for different reasons. It's usually based on fear. We put things off because we're afraid of doing it. I agree with Tony Robbins on this topic. We either fear being uncomfortable while doing it, or sometimes even fear success.

Another cause of procrastination is to overthink something. This is where I'm most guilty. There's only so much we can know before we do something. Thinking is action...Thinking can save lots of unnecessary action. But when your thoughts get stale, it's time to do something.

Once we do it we get a result. Then we can adjust our plan. The important thing is to get started

Kelly...I really hope you don't believe that. Most people don't succeed or fail because of luck. Luck influences things but certainly isn't close to a top driver of success/failure...my two cents

As the famous saying goes "The Harder I worked, the luckier I got "

We make our own luck. Nothing is guaranteed, we live in a probability Universe. We can increase our chances for success when we do the right things. Sometimes it works sooner than we think possible, some times it takes longer. If you keep moving towards your goal you'll inevitably get there!

I have to say, for years there were a number of things that kept me from succeeding. Here was the BIG one: I think got into a mode where I would purchase what seemed like a great product and start reading/learning the process. About halfway through I would see another product with a better pitch and think, "Maybe that's the one I need" and buy that one. This continued to happen until one day I realized that I knew how to do it, I just needed to put a plan together and "Do It" - stop buying new courses looking for a magic bullet, stop trying to make progress on multiple fronts all at the same time, stop trying to do a million things half-baked. So, I stopped confusing activity with progress and got to work for real. This was my number one hurdle and while it was stopping me, I actually thought I was making progress, yet I kept wondering why I wasn't seeing big success.

          Can anyone relate?

Yes, I think this is a problem many people face. If you buy a course, make sure you implement at least enough of what was taught in order to double your money back as profit. Also, take it as a challenge when you buy a course. Do everything it says to do and try to "prove it wrong." Ask for a refund if it actually didn't work...but you know that if you actually do it - it will probably work
            {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7438893].message }}
  • The very point that you realized that you are procrastinating is the very point which releases someone from that stage.
In my opinion, procrastination is not really the reason why we face failure. For me, the main reason why people fail is they expect too much. When we expect too much, and we set our minds in the ideas that we cannot really instantly achieve will lead to failure.
Procrastination may be one of the reasons of failure, and can also be the product of failure.

We expect things which are hard to achieve, we fail and we procrastinate, thinking that there is no hope left.

It's much easier to work consistently and avoid procrastination when one has a workable and solid plan. You know that your efforts will pay off, and so there's incentive to keep moving.

That's true. Procrastination is a mere branch of a tree called "lack of clarity." A lot of people fight with procrastination because they think it's their problem. It's not. It's a symptom.

It can't be overcome anymore than you can overcome migraines by taking painkillers. You have to find out what's really going on...and most of the time it's lack of clarity.

Clarity gives you somewhere to focus, a reason to say no to the millions of distractions. It protects you from information overload and drives out indecision and procrastination.

I read this on Facebook the other day "The work you're doing while you're procrastinating is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life."

Key word is "work" of course...watching TV and eating pizza doesn't qualify (chucks ). Lots of people chase opportunity instead of chasing something they're passionate about.

Problem is, there are thousands of opportunities dangled in front of us every day (just check out the WSO section), but we only have a few key passions and interests. Find those, and you're one third of the way there.

      How to beat procrastination:

      1) Do what you're good at
      2) Make sure you're passionate about it
      3) Make sure people are are willing to pay for

In EVERY niche, there are a handful of people making all kinds of money and having the time of their lives.

Show me one of them who's not passionate. Heck, show me someone who procrastinates about something they're absolutely in love with. Don't think there's money in the thing you're interested in?

I bet you $1 someone is making a lifestyle out of it. Tony Hawk become a professional skateboarder. When the industry started to die, he single-handedly revived it. That's the power of clarity and passion.

Yes, you make good points. A workable plan, although a definite plus for avoiding procrastination is not quite enough. If you can find a plan that resonates with you, you will want to get going. For myself, a workable plan that is solid and that I BELIEVE in is paramount. But it also has to resonate with my interests, personality, and skills.

I think it all stems from a lack of belief that you can make money online. That is what drives everything else; lack of focus, procrastination, lack of a plan, etc. If you actually believe you will never make money online or be successful, why would you do all of the things that are necessary - in your mind there is no point.

I am there right now.....I don't believe in my ability to be successful online, so I procrastinate, cannot focus, don't believe in my plan. It all stems from lack of belief.

Guess what - I don't make any money online.

When I break it down into smaller steps, creating a list of what needs to be done in order to accomplish each of the smaller steps, I feel as though I am achieving something and find I don't procrastinate, but look forward to the tasks at hand.

YES...I have always had Action Lists that I make each and every morning where I break everything I want to achieve that day into actionable steps. It helps A LOT!!
