Are you into self improvement?

If so, this post may be very important for you.

Self improvement is great. I'm all for it, and I've been using it for a little over 2 years now. Brought great changes in my life, in every aspect of my life actually.

It's interesting how you suddenly find yourself living a better life than your peers when you weren't at all focusing on being better, just being better than you were yesterday, right?

I've read a lot of self help books, watched a lot of videos, read a lot of discussions, and I integrated most of the ideas into my own life.

However, this video: ... made me think and realize just why I've been feeling pretty uncomfortable lately.

It's undeniable that modern self help teachers all focus on you having to be outgoing, great public speaker, social type of person, basically inheriting all the qualities of an ideal "salesman". Think about it.

The person in this video introduces us to the remarkable fact that 1/3-1/2 of all people are actually introverts and she also explains the difference between introverts and shy people.

The simple fact is, not everyone enjoys teamwork, being around people all the time and sticking out as the "alpha" of the group. They don't need to. They function better without external stimulus. There's a very good chance that most of you are introverts.

What self help industry is doing to us lately is not acknowledging the difference between introverts and extroverts (although it's true noone is really just one of those, that person would be in a lunatic asylum*) and putting us all in the same basket - of extreme extroverts.

This brings introverts into difficult positions, they have to fake their personality, which is not a simple task. They mistake it for the feeling of "discomfort" which is supposed to represent growth.

Growth can be achieved through comfort as well. The question is - are you having fun?

A lab scientist and researcher who loves his work can find himself locked up in the lab for days, doing experiments and pushing his limits because he ENJOYS what he does and he renders great service to the public, for which he or she is paid handsomly.

That's the kind of growth you should seek. Not put yourself in situations which do not match your personality. I hope you get where I'm coming from.

Not everyone may agree with me, but I had to share my opinion on this.

In short... stay true to yourself.

Kind regards,
Zannix

I'm not sure how people can not be into self improvement, but I know there are people out there who just sort of move along without really thinking about things.

It's very difficult in any case to not be true to yourself...kind of like trying to swim upstream. We do seem to live in an extrovert-biases society, and it's nice for the quiet folks to get some good press. Spoken as an introvert...can you tell?

Check out her book, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts." As an introvert myself it was completely life-changing.

I am a self improvement junkie, but I have to remind myself that I need to take time to appreciate and take in things that are around me or that are in my life.

I always have plans to improve myself quickly. Though through the years I have understood that the best way to instill positive and permanent change is to implement things slowly. Ease it into my daily rituals.

My dad and I are introverts, while my mother is an extrovert. This does not mean that I do not get loud and domineering at times. It just means that I hate dealing with other people and their personalities, especially in a business setting. I get more things done when I do them myself, or delegate it. If it does not work, I try something else. In the end I get more satisfaction from learning, and getting it done. Rather than a ton of meetings, and conversations, and my ideas for a business or product being turned unrecognizable.

I used to feel like I was missing something, when my friends would enjoy going clubbing. While I would rather sit at home, read, and drink some wine (damn you Chianti!)

In the end, you have to do what you feel is right for you. And as OP said, stay true to yourself. You will be more successful in that respect.

Self-improvement would make us more valuable in every single day. We all aim to improve ourselves and everything we have. I like the video you shared, Zannix. Every now and then I check myself if I'm still on the right track. This is to check if I need to pursue doing something or change the way I'm running my life.

Yes, never stop improving, that's what we should always do. Either way there will be two things you'll go it's neither UP or if we stop improving ourselves then we'll go Down.

If you are not growing you're dying. Those who choose their comfort zone are not growing, therefore they must by default be dying. It's up to an individuals personal choice as to how they choose to live the life they've been given, but I sure don't fancy an early demise, so gimme that next book - I choose growth anytime... )

(Just as an aside, those who choose not to grow are not going to be able to contribute anything back to the world, since they have nothing to offer anyone else, so it's a selfish (and lonely) act not to improve yourself and stay in the 'comfort zone')

I am such an introvert it's driving me crazy.

They say "follow your passions". Yeah, I know exactly what my passion is, and it doesn't make me any money, which means I'm in a massive amount of trouble right now.

If I could, I would just sit here and never make any contact with anyone.
