Success Starts Within

The way you think of yourself is critical to whether or not you will succeed. This applies to life in general, including starting an online business. You can have a burning desire to succeed, specific goals and a well-mapped out plan for how you want to develop your business, you can acquire all the relevant technical knowledge you require, and be confident that you can make it all work, but without a positive self-image your plans are doomed.

Even the best laid plans cannot hold up to a core belief that our identity is linked to failure. In the case of internet marketing, especially if we have fallen victim to the "shiny object syndrome", we may have started and stopped countless programs or systems, never bringing any of them to successful completion. We may have internalized some negative emotion as a result, subconsciously feeling that the next program we undertake is likely to fail as well.

Unless we can get congruence between our subconscious and our actions, we are dead in the water. The internalized belief that our identity is linked to failure will trump all else. You must try not to engage in this negative self-chatter; you must learn to focus on success.

Imagine yourself having already achieved success, and what your life is like. Think of this as taking place in the present moment. How do you feel? What are you doing with your time? What clothes are you wearing? What kind of car are you driving? What is your house like?

Visualize what you have become in as much detail as you can and with as much feeling as possible. Your subconscious responds most readily to images, and giving it images to work with is the fastest way to instill a more positive identity, and a core belief that you are destined for success.

Thanks for the nice thoughts. I have read in many forums that many want-to-be IMers don't succeed because they give up. Though some have a breaking point beyond which they cannot go, the success to any achievement is continuous unabated persuasion towards the goal until you achieve it. Some are lucky to see success immediately but for the ones who have to wait, they need to persuade.

Thanks venkateshk. The mind is a powerful tool, and positive thoughts go a long way.

I'm also a big believer in mental imaging as a tool for instilling new (hopefully success oriented) behavior. But I've torn between the two sides of the coin. The brain doesn't really know the difference between an experience and a imagined/believed experience so we can reward ourselves before doing the work. This is why I'm torn between how these mind images should be done.

People tend to work hard to get the feeling of accomplishment. If the brain feels that accomplishment before the actual work is done, could this be counterproductive to success? (more on this at Derek Sivers: Keep your goals to yourself | Video on TED.com )

I believe the way to go is using mental imaging to visualize the wanted end result and then thinking about principles that, when followed consistently, would be likely to produce this result. When these principles are clear, one should make them their own and really do some work to completely adopt these principles and concentrate on them. I believe if we learn to love the work that leads to success we don't need to reward ourselves in advance just to get the mental energy to get some of the work done.

I'm basically saying that I believe it's good to know where you're going but loving each step of the journey is the real magic of succeeding.

Nice post. Yes, enjoying the process makes the journey that much easier, doesn't it?

As far as imaging, the subconscious mind communicates in images, which is why imagining our lives and circumstances as we would like them to be is so powerful. I don't think this would end up being counterproductive.

      Hiu Dan,

Yes, I'm sure you've heard the saying that whether you think you can or can't, you're right.

    Great post Kathy.

I think everyone needs to hear this because every now and then we may have thought of self doubt if things are not going as planned. As you stated if one visualizes success in the present, you are destined to achieve it.

      Thanks, Mike.

Your post reminds me of Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now, and the idea that we create our futures in the present moment. So our thoughts and actions each moment are critical to what our lives will be like down the road. Food for thought...

    I like the post Kathy..

I truly believe that a Negative Self Image can hold you from success. Even though you believe you deserve to be succesful conciously, it doesn't mean the subconcious does. A person's past and it's environment do affect the self-image of the human mind subconsiously.

For some people it is harder to succeed, since their self-image isn't that positive as their concious is. It all depends on someone's past and environment.

Have you ever read the Midas Method? You should look that up for more insight to train your subconcious to a positive state.

Thanks for the post. I very agree with it. Positive thinking and positive attitude lead to success. You just have to do it and not surrender.
