Anyone else having problems with consistency/sticking with it?

I've been wanting to cultivate new habits for years. However every time I try forming a new habit, I get all motivated and pumped up but after 3-4 days I don't feel like doing it anymore. It's like my mind is tricking me and playing games with me and I just don't do the task i need to do.

For instance, I will attempt to exercise and do meditation everyday for 30 days. I get enthusiastic about doing it and then I'm really motivated and excited about how my life will change so much for the better after i've turned it into a habit. I would be able to have more energy, think clearly, reduce stress, improve sleep, and all this good stuff. But then I would lose that motivation and excitement after a few days and I would be compelled to surf the internet all day, play videogames, watch youtube and all this bad stuff that leads me nowhere.

I've tried virtually every self help and goal setting tip on the planet about changing habits. The only thing i haven't tried is asking a buddy that I can be accountable to. Then I would report to him everyday and if I miss a day I would have to pay him a considerable amount of money.

Does it all come down to this, or is there any other way I can be consistent and persistent?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you've answered your own question. I've found accountability buddies to be very helpful. However, you need to make sure that you have a buddy that truly holds you accountable -- not someone that will listen to your excuses.

It takes just 21 days to make a new habit "stick." Get that accountability buddy and go for it!

    Best of luck to you!

You said you have been WANTING to cultivate new habits.
You should feel the NEED to change. Find reasons that force you to change to avoid....whatever you want to avoid.
If there's no real reason to change, your mind will be slack.

You also need to let go of what's happened in the past. If you keep telling yourself that you will slack off on your plan after 3-4 days, then you will. Tell yourself you will follow through no matter what.

maybe you should print and stick it at the wall so everyday you can see what you should and shouldn't do everyday.

I've added my new goals and daily tasks for 2013 on my laptop so when I start up in the mornings, I can visualize them. We all find problems sticking to daily tasks and goals. At the end of the day, we are all accountable for our actions and you have to instill that discipline, especially in 2013.
