Focus Brings Long Term Results

Over the past 2 years of venturing out and running my own business and not working full-time in a job I have tried numerous business opportunities. I have tried businesses in providing student accommodation, share trading and options, renting and selling paddles to dragon boat clubs and selling toilet odour eliminator products online. This was opportunistic thinking and diminished my efforts as I got started by adding more work rather than focusing on one business. It was all very tempting to try and run them at the same time to see which one would take off. Unfortunately there was no focus and when times got tough I jumped across to work on the business that interested me more.

Opportunistic Thinking Is Bad

If you are like me and see that everything is possible and always keeping an open mind about business ideas, then you will find it irresistible to try new ideas. Trust me I've learnt the hard way. So how have I changed this? I'm a huge fan of Yaro Starak's blog - entrepreneurs-journey.com and one day he wrote a post about his coach Rich Schefren who was launching a new coaching program. As usual most internet marketers have a system to launch their new products and give away a lot of free quality information that can be applied straight away. They do this so they can build rapport with you and show that their information is useful before they start their sales pitch on you. As I knew the information was free and they just wanted my email address, I downloaded Rich's eBook, the "Internet Manifesto". If you haven't read it, I would recommend you get a copy of it immediately.

The Change in Mindset
After reading the "Internet Manifesto", I had a profound moment that I would change the way I operate my business. My mindset went from "thinking opportunistic" to "thinking strategically" meaning if I wanted to build a long term business I would have to set up the right systems and hire staff to leverage my time. I realised that I couldn't do everything myself. Rich's famous flowchart accurately shows how most Solo Enterpreneurs run their Internet Businesseses today. (I'm one of them and have taken action to outsource a lot of my work since then)


Since then I have taken action to sell my businesses that are not part of my goals and made a mental decision to not start new business opportunities.

Focus Is Key
Since I was compelled to find out more, I downloaded the rest of Rich's series of books which are listed below:
  1. Internet Manifesto
  2. The Missing Chapter
  3. The Final Chapter
  4. Attention Age Doctrine Part 2
  5. Maven Matrix Manifesto
  6. The Entrepreneurial Emergency
Through this series I learned that I needed to focus on one task at a time, not five at a time (today's generation calls it multi-tasking). Making that shift helped me improve time efficiency and also get tasks completed that generated more money. Additionally, you need to use your strengths to focus on a task and learn to outsource the rest that you are not good at. This is the key to long-term success in any business.

    focus is a key to long term success though it is extremly hard to get focused and stay focused it is imparitive to long term results, if you look into the life of a person whos achieve long term succsess you will almost always see that they never lost there focus of what was truly important

      I would agree with you, Alberto. Focus on providing value / output of great quality and money will come in chasing you. Don't chase money, let money chase you. Focus on your clients, on their success and with their success you will be successful too.

    It’s true that focus brings the best results. I read an article that did a study on multitasking and they proved that no one can perform more than one task at a time and still be as efficient as if they had only doing one. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have more than one hobby or task to complete. All I’m suggesting is that we allocate certain times or a certain amount of hours to each task. Maybe sit down and put them in order of urgency and importance and work from there.

    If you still can’t concentrate on what needs to be concentrated on, then it may be best to do everything you want but only one at a time. Make it a goal to finish the first thing so that you can move on to the next.

      i can't even read something and pay attention if music is on in the back ground any more ..but i can arrange tasks and the things i do to get things done as effectively as possible .

      as for the OP .. i have watched a few you tube video Arnold Swarzenegger for his info product ..blueprint to cut..and he goes deep in to the need for having a very strong vivid vision ..one line was golden.. i could eat like everyone eats and look like everyone else..or i could eat like i needed to eat(to look like I wanted to look .

      we can work without a vision and jump from oppertunity to oportunity ..or we can develop our vision..and only take those opportunities that will get us closer to what we want ..

      it goes well beyond making money ..it goes into .. what you eat, what you listen to , what you read..and if you are single ..the women you get into relationships with ..( woman with ambition have had that part down for thousands of years )

      sometimes it is better to be lazy and do nothing.. than to jump on an opportunity that will take you far off in a dircetion that does not get you closer to your vision .

    I agree with this post! Focus is very important for long term success. When you lose focus you get out of the path that you wanna go into. Its really hard to stay focused into something especially if its a long term goal. People often times bail out or lose focus at some point. Doing so will make you focus on something that is not your goal.

    It’s a good trait to be able to multi-task but you are right, we have to have better focus if we want to attain long-term success. Jumping from one job or venture to another and taking-off every time the cloud gets dark will not give us the opportunity to grow. I think we need to focus on the business we are most passionate about and pave our way to make it a success. Take its bad side as an opportunity to grow and learn and when you find one technique that works, hone that until you get the best of it.
