Building Your Mindset Muscle

I sit down every morning and write my thoughts.

Typically, I am not sure what I am going to write and I have to get myself to a place where I feel great enough so I can focus on making a difference for somebody else with what I produce.

It is Saturday morning at 8:30am and I did not get a lot of sleep last night and I was feeling a tad grumpy this morning.

I went to StumbleUpon and this is what I saw -

21 Pictures to Make Your Day

By the tenth picture, I had tears in my eyes and felt at peace inside.

Looking at inspiring pictures and awesome acts of kindness reminds me of my true self and why I have been put on the planet.

Our natural way of being is to help others.

However, personal agendas, life's challenges and personal conflicts get in the

way of us doing the things that are meant to do.

The acts of generosity expressed in the photos come from decisions at a certain a point of time and probably were made without a lot of thinking.

However, how can you maintain this level of generosity in your everyday life?

Take Time For Yourself - If you are doing things that are important for you, then you are much more likely to want to help others out. Conversely, if you are not taking care of your physical and spiritual self, you are going to tend towards taking care of those needs first and are going to miss opportunities to be generous with others.

Manage Your Thinking - Without Management, your mind will have a life of its own. Most likely, if you are mind is working unguided, then it will not take you in a great direction. Doing simple exercise can help flood your mind with positive thoughts -

Here is an example of a simple exercise that I do everyday before I wake up - I take a topic in my life and write everything I love about that subject. It may seem a little strange but it works. For example, I went to the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn last night for the first time and loved the new stadium. This morning I spent ten minutes writing every detail that I loved about the game and about the stadium.

What does this do for me?
I have locked in the great memories that I had last night and I have taken one more step closer to lead my mind down the path of positive thoughts. Your thoughts will go based on momentum. If you start down the road of negative thoughts, you are more likely to continue down that path. However, if you focus on positive thoughts, you will also build momentum in that direction

Exercise Every Day - Exercise impacts all of the cells in your body. This does not mean that you have to be a fitness guru but doing some activity will work wonders to raise your level of happiness.

Increase your contact with human beings - When we are leaning towards negative thinking, we usually go one of two routes. We isolate ourselves from others or we seek out others so that we can complain to them. Neither approach is terribly effective. Seek out others to life them up and you will find that you are lifted up as well.

Find a Community of People Who Are Generally Positive
- Ultimately, you cannot create the difference you want to create by yourself. Find yourself a positive community.

    Thank you for sharing Justin.

Having been raised catholic, I used to think that taking time to myself is being selfish. But I did notice that I do need a lot of time alone to go deep inside and rejuvenate and clarify my thoughts. Which brings us to your second point of "Managing your thinking". I think that's essential because that affects the level of consciousness you put in everything you do. It affects your thoughts, which affects your vibration which in turn affects what you attract in your life.

Kelly, "mind muscle" is a metaphor.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

This is very good. I have discovered that if I just go straight to working without organizing my day, I will get disorganized along the way and lose focus. And you are right, exercising really helps the whole being to be productive. Only that I can't exercise everyday..

No, but it can help to think of it in this way. This is especially true with respect to willpower. We have excellent research demonstrating that practicing focused effort and resisting temptation actually makes these easier.

Think of it as riding a bike...lots of effort in the beginning, but then it becomes so second nature that most people struggle to describe how it is done. Choose a SMALL, specific, challenging task and practice it. It'll get easier.

I particularly agree with taking time for yourself and managing your thinking. In general life can be so fast in certain parts of this country that people don't have time to breathe deeply and enjoy life. In order to be happy you have to be able to do that.
Managing your thinking is also important. We are surrounded by so much negativity that it's easy to become depressed, discouraged if we don't pay attention to our thoughts carefully and ideally at all time.

I am suffering from bad back pain. So I would suggest that we must do little exercise daily.

I like it. Good list, I need to work on more contact with people, kinda shut all my friends out to try to make this work from home stuff turn out the way I want it too. But I absolutely agree on exercising every day. The shift in the way you feel is worth far more than the strain of putting in the work.

My downfall is when I'm having time for myself to mess around I find it tough to get back to my daily list, but I'm working on it.
