Business siesta
Victor Hugo said "There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky, there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul."
Humanity has gone through cycles of deep sleep and wakefulness. In one dispensation it may be content with carnal living followed by a rising awareness of the deeper dimensions of life. These polarities in consciousness form part of the creative process in the universe. So the cycle we're moving in to now is characterized by deeper exploration of the self. The opposite polarities of unconsciousness and consciousness represent the contraction and expansion motion of the universe. There's no right and wrong in it, it's simply cyclical. There is no previous generation to blame for our fortune or misfortune.
The first waves of the latest spiritual awakening started to trickle on to the shores of individual souls in the West, during the 1960's and 1970's. The counter culture that emerged from this era re shaped society and culminated in the excesses of the 1980's and 1990's. The year 2001 ushered in what seems like an accelerated energy flow in the direction of consciousness literature. The Body, Mind and Spirit genre exploded guiding millions of books in the direction of eagerly seeking souls. Many of these books ended up on best seller lists, totaling hundreds of millions in sales. Surely this is one of the more compelling indications of man's renewed and intensified search for meaning, fast-tracked by the advances in technology? If man is searching with this much intensity, it must mean that his underlying wanting has become more urgent too? Conversely it also implies that his current world does not provide the answers he has been looking for. Perhaps technology has made this wanting more palpable. We have statistics at our finger tips that reflect the movement of goods and services in support of this quest of the soul all over the world.
The accelerated and more visible search for true meaning continues and business, rather than only exploiting this "trend" as a possible revenue stream, must consider how it can facilitate both the search itself. It should allow humanity to explore this burning issue within the corporate structure and for each individual to tune in to the unique beat of his own heart.
It can obviously never replace the expedition that should take place within the soul. It can however innovatively support employees in what is the grander spectacle of the soul according to Victor Hugo.
There has been a far greater convergence of scientific and consciousness ideals than ever before. This consciousness stuff is here to stay and is no longer left up to a few sages and guru's to interpret with the rest following the most persuasive argument. Every soul is or will soon be searching with determination. Business would be naïve not to at least contemplate the effects it will have on its smooth sailing vessel.
Icebergs may be forming naturally out of man's search for happiness that were not there a year ago when the business landscape was last surveyed.
So, corporations may ignore this shift in society, but only for so long before the effects on the bottom line become too compelling to ignore!
