If I hear ONE more person tell me this (or my child) I am going to slap them!

I've heard this piece of advice since I was a kid.

And now I'm hearing the same advice being told my child.

And it's a load of hogwash:

"If you just set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!"

Just the thought of those words is like drinking battery acid.

Because here's the deal. I didn't get to where I am sitting on the couch, eyes pursed as hard as they could --- near constipated facial expression -- PUTTING my mind to success.

No.

I had to have THREE things to be successful. MIND, HEART, and FEET!

'Believing' you can accomplish something doesn't do anything, and telling our kids this will make them super depressed when all of their 'belief' leads them to no accomplishment.

Except, maybe, a closet full of 'participation' trophies.

DOING something and being FIRST PLACE is different than just 'being there and existing'.

So - stop just 'believing' you can accomplish something and GET TO YOUR FEET AND FAIL, SUCCEED, fail some more, and succeed again and again and again..... don't be a fence sitter.

It starts with faith and the right mindset, but without pursuing, persisting and hard work...you're nowhere...

    Have Faith
    Take Action
    Persist!

I've always taken "put your mind to it" to mean commit fully to it which would mean taking action.

I've never once considered that to mean just positive thinking.

I think the meaning is more towards getting the right mindset first before striking out half cocked, not just willing things to happen.

It certainly is a read between the lines, there; that one for sure can't be taken at face value.

    I 100% agree!

Too many people expect jobs/money/fame etc to be placed in their laps when this is clearly not the case.

Here's the thing... Your heart and your feet didn't get going until you SET YOUR MIND TO IT.

Indeed there are settings of the mind that don't muster the combined energy of the heart and feet... But, you obviously set your mind to it, which is when your heart and feet followed.

The heart and the feet won't know where to go unless you point them with your mind.

  • I agree, but I also think there there is a plague that we're giving our kids today and it's really hurting them..

We're giving them a 'positivity' inoculation and telling them that this is all they need to be successful. And if you are always positive and believe that you'll be okay and successful, you will be.

And then, when LIFE happens --- THEN what?! Prozac the CRAP out of them!

We're coddling them too much. We're telling them they're entitled to success without making them work for it - and giving them the task of 'absorbing' success without much more than actually 'accomplishing' it.

I'd take a 'most improved' trophy over a 'participation trophy' any day.

I don't know about over there in Utah, but over here in London, England, kinds don't grow up thinking that they have a divine right to succeed. Quite the opposite, they are full of self hatred, loathing and see themselves as being unworthy of true success

      speak for yourself buddy boy

stop using code words like the politicians do

      words like "WE"

who cares what WE does.. more importantly what YOU do!!!!

do you give your kids prozac????

everything starts in the mind.. its the state of mind and starting point to everything. of course this is not the complete formula.. but its a good start

what do you want to teach your kids

forget about it.. because you will never make it?????

so yes if you set your mind to it... anything is possible

      because in the end

If You Think You Can................... Your Right

and If You Think You Can't.................... Your Right.

Seems to me that if your mind was REALLY put to something, you'd be finding and taking the proper action to make it work by any means possible. I see what you're saying, but I think I still agree with the saying.

I don't think it really would be interpreted as just wishing for something and getting it based on the law of attraction, to me hard work is implied.

I think the other part of the statement is important too...it says "you can ACCOMPLISH anything," not you will receive or be granted anything.

Maybe the accomplishing part of that statement is the "doing" part.

I think u need a balance of both. Obviously, doing it is of utmost importance, but it's the belief that spurs you to do it. If your hopes have failed you, then explore other options. The world is never too small for you to make a stand on.

But if you don't even believe yourself, you won't do it.

So if you set your mind on it, do it and see what happens!

I think when people aren't taking action it's because they can't really see where they want to go.

I used to spend time doing things like affirmations visualizations that weren't doing anything for me because they weren't "sticking."

They weren't helping me see where I wanted to go.

I think if you aren't taking action it's because you aren't inspired and can't remember where you want to go. Because I believe that inspired action and movement comes from something you see for yourself. From a vision.

But when you have that vision, you will want to take action.

I can certainly understand your point ADE.
But it is ALL integrally related.
I can take action but if I have no belief I will somehow manage to subvert any success by my lack of faith. And I've seen this play out in my own life more times than I care to remember.
However, like you, I've busted my *ss for everything I have so the "just believe" is somewhat irritating to me also.
I think there are two separate causes of this "rose colored glasses" mentality.
The Secret, with all it's success was not very good at giving ALL the steps.
It allowed too many people to ignore a universal truth =
      There is no free lunch!
Yes, you have to believe and be positive, but without effort and action you will get nowhere.
Also, our public schools over the last several decades have really been pushing this subversive (communist/marxist based) idea that there are no winners and losers.
This is based on the idea that we are all equal.
      Complete BS!
We are all CREATED equal, what we do with it after that is up to us!
If there were no winners or losers the worst guy in the NFL would make the same amount of money as the best, and that's just not the real world - nor should it be.

As with other posters, I've always thought putting/setting your mind to something means doing whatever it takes for as long as it takes no matter how hard it is approach to accomplishing whatever you put your mind to.

"If you just set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!" should be:

"If you just set your mind to it, find a good mentor, take massive action, learn from each mistake, never give up, stay persistent, then you can accomplish anything!"

Like all moral maxims it's only one piece to the overall puzzle.

Kind of like someone saying "go get em tiger". Go get who? Am I a tiger? Was I transported here from India and didn't know about it?

I would hope no one goes full retard and thinks they can just think about doing great things and they will magically happen. Of course you have to get up off your butt and get er done.

If you gotta go and your on the couch and all you do is think about being in the bathroom you're going need a new couch.

Of course it takes action after the idea.

      It's like this:
      Concept
      Commitment
      Carnage

I say carnage because once I decide to do something if you're in my way you and gonna be pretty for long.

What I see WITH my child and their generation is an over-proliferation of 'everybody wins' 'no score keeping' 'participation trophies' and 'everyone hold hands and sing Kumbaya because if anyone's feelings are hurt then the system has failed'

There is an emphasis of 'coddling' our kids and telling them they can DO anything if they just 'put their mind to it'.

Now, I'm not against being positive and optimistic.

What I am against is ONLY focusing on these, WITHOUT an emphasis on ACCOMPLISHMENT.

What I appreciate from the previous Warriors that comment, is that most of you get it.

A lot have said: "Well yeah, DUH AuctionDebtEliminator, it's not JUST the mind - of COURSE you have to DO something'.

I applaud that it is so obvious to us - we get it.

But that's what is missing today, and it's hard to deny that.

We take our kids to little league, and we're not allowed to keep score. Everyone gets a trophy, and everyone HAS to play... After all, it's all about 'having fun, right?'

No! It's about learning to overcome challenges - it's about bouncing back from a tough loss, learning how to hit the ball, steal bases better, run faster, and win!

It's about working as a team - knowing when to 'give the ball to the best player' and having to bench the kid who has a 50% free throw percentage until he works on getting it higher and PROVES he can be counted on in clutch plays.

It's not about 'having fun'. It's about improving from a bad situation and becoming great.

So, let's not reward mediocrity and participation. Let's reward improvement, excellence, and accomplishment.

Yes it's not enough just to have it in your mind. You need to make a game plan and then take action. Also you need to have a dream, to keep you motivated and move forward. Remember to do at least 1 thing for your business every day and it will be rewarded faster than you can imagine
