The mind is a very powerful thing. It's the difference between Mother Teresa and Adolf Hitler. It's the difference between being a millionaire or being homeless, the difference between a life full of joy and happiness, and a life full of misery and hate. Or perhaps it was said best by John Milton...

"The mind is its own place, and in it self can make a Heaven of Hell, and a Hell of Heaven."

Luckily, we have been given the gift of free will to do whatever we wish with our minds, thoughts, and beliefs.

I'm sure when you were a kid you heard all the time "you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it." Well, this really couldn't be more true. You can do anything you want, if you believe you can. Many times people use "I can't" as an excuse to not fulfill their dreams, or simply to avoid doing things all together. The truth is not that they can't, but simply that they won't. Many will often jump to the conclusion of "I can't" before the task at hand is even tried; but behold the power of thought, the very belief of "I can't" will be proven right every time, because it is the belief that which makes it to be so. One must change the mind's perspective of what is possible before anything is possible.

"Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are right."

-Henry Ford

You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it, and this remains true for all, no matter how old or young. Our thoughts and beliefs create our reality, and our reality is molded by our actions, yet our actions are determined by our thoughts and beliefs. So, whatever it may be that one wishes to accomplish must first be accomplished within the mind, and it will be so in one's reality.

So next time you have a goal that seems so far fetched, so out of reach, and next to impossible to accomplish, and you quick to jump the conclusion of "I can't," sit back and as yourself if you can't, or you won't...

The mind is a very powerful thing, this could be the reason why only 10% of our brain is used. It's all in our minds.

This is a great thought and it is actually true. It really does matter what are you thinking, what are your thoughts and what do you beleive. It will create your actual future!

The question will always be... what motivates or inspire you to go for that dream or whatever is on your mind.

Ah haaaa, beat me to it! A definiteness of purpose! I plan to make a thread about this later. Napoleon Hill covers this over and over again in his works. It must really mean something ha!

    OP,

    I have a thought.
    I have thousands of thoughts.
All of these thoughts determine my next set of thoughts.
    ad nauseum.
How could these thoughts, considering the endless loop,
effect the ability to be able to do or not to do?
    This is what bothers me.
It all comes down to choice.
    and choice requires thought.
To me, not as simple as can you or will you.

If I understood correctly, you have too many thoughts that you can't control to the point of being an annoyance or being unpleasurable. Basically being overwhelmed with thought to the point of not getting anything done... Is this correct?

You also mention an endless loop, which can also be labeled as the "wheel of karma." This loop is seemingly endless because nothing is being changed to fix it. Opposed to shifting your focus and working towards a solution which would be to focus on just one thought at a time, you choose to constantly fight your thoughts by concentrating too much on the fact that you are being overwhelmed by thoughts...

Focusing on just one thought can be a difficult thing to do especially if your thoughts usually run at a million miles an hour. The only way to calm your thoughts and eventually master the mind is through meditation. If you're not familiar with meditation then just know that there is no right or wrong way to do it.

      Try this:
Remove yourself from all distractions. Sit down or lie down somewhere. Rest your hands at your sides. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in, then release slowly. Continue taking long, full, but comfortable breaths. Exhale just the same. Focus entirely on your breathing, nothing more.

Do this for just 5 minutes starting out. Eventually time will be added to the length of your meditation and a crystal clear mind will be much easier to hold.

Just give it try. You will love the results.

Oh, I get things done. And its not overwhelming. Definitely annoying

        By "endless loop", I mean 1 thought+ 1000 thought= < 1

Moving to Colorado or Washington State would calm my thoughts

I have no understanding how the "thoughts become things" thing works.

Okay well annoyance is not pleasurable, so change it. It must not be that annoying if an attempt to change isn't being made. Isn't this the issue that caused your initial post?

So your thousands thoughts are all about moving to Colorado or Washington State? Moving will not calm your thoughts, controlling your thoughts will calm your thoughts. Right now, your thoughts are controlling you.

Was referring to my thoughts consistently multiplying, being greater than the one thought.

I have read Hill. and the secret. and countless others.

The usual rhetoric tells me" It doesn't work, because you don't believe it works"

Not true. I am sure it works. My mind can be turbocharged high powered engine with nitrous boost, or a sputtering not firing on all cylinders bogged down slug. No in between.

Sorry about the vague Colorado/Washington State reference, ignore it,I will leave it at that.

I have really tried meditation as well, with little success.

Can't or Won't does not factor in

      Hey Daniel - Great Post...
Just wanted to give a little different perspective on meditation/stillness.
Like Big Rob, trying to meditate or clear my mind and be still is very difficult, and has had the tendency to make me sleepy if in the right setting/state.
Some people, I'm one of them, are very movement oriented.
We often think, create, calm, and work through our problems best when we are moving.
So for me to clear my head, gain insight, dump negative juice - it's really effective to go for a bike ride, work out, walk the dogs, take a hike.
A beach to walk on would be HEAVEN!!!
I've learned to go with my natural energy instead of trying to muzzle it.
Often I will write long, in depth articles walking around talking to the voice recognition app on my Iphone

Another thing I wanted to point out is that even though like Big Rob was saying, you might have thousands of thoughts going through your head...they won't all be original.
The majority of those thousand thoughts will be the same or from the same interest, issue, or concern.
So consciously directing the source of the bulk of our desires/worry is what really 'steers the ship' so to speak.

This is an eye opening post for me...

As I stated before, there is no right and wrong way of meditation, and you have really broadened my horizon on this. Although not being physically still, the mind can become still in any enjoyable situation.

"You cannot smoke while meditating, but you can meditate while smoking."

This is one of the reasons I love going to the gym. While in the gym I have a clear mind no matter how my day is going.

Sometimes you just forget, I guess...

"I've learned to go with my natural energy instead of trying to muzzle it."

        The key to happiness!

"Follow your intuition, as it is God leading the way."

Your post has inspired me greatly. I have found great value in your opinion. Thanks so much, Natalie.

Quoted for emphasis. We're all built differently. Supressing our natural tendencies in order to follow what works for someone else will often result in frustration, doubt, and negativity.

Anyone who is quoting Henry Ford and Napoleon Hill is on the right track. It is important to understand that our "subconcious mind" which runs 24-7 only "plays" (like a movie) what we allow it to play. We control, if we choose, the movie that is playing. It also does not know the difference between what is real or false and the concious mind will gravitate towards the manifestation of what the subconcious believes to be true.

Suggestion--read "You Were Born Rich", by Bob Proctor
