Gene's methods for keeping focused

Although my profile is brand-new here on the warrior forum, I have been an avid Internet marketer for the past seven years and I make a decent amount of money as a result.

I try my best to mitigate the amount of information I absorb on the Internet therefore I spend, or at least I used to spend my time, on BHW. Now I'm here..

Getting off The IM Short Bus and Driving your own 81 Honda Hatchback civic wagon

To this day I still suffer from information overload at times and I do get caught up in jumping from strategy to strategy because they all just seem all so damn good and I'm always looking to improve my efficiency at I what I am doing.

I don't recommend jumping ship every fifteen minutes, unless you absolutely despise what you are doing. Find something you like and make it better, make it yours, own it!!

I still spend money on software and modular courses and I'm always trying to improve my education and my ability to do a better job as a marketer.

One of My biggest faults, and I feel a lot of people have the same issue, is that I start out with a good proven strategy (at least it works for others) and then tend to lose focus, get bored and jump to something else without putting enough real work into the strategy to see if its worth keeping or not.

If you do this constantly, over and over, then you know its not good. This is bad for business and a huge waste of time. This is not the problem I described above, where you're trying to find something you enjoy but a flaw that can kill your business.

Here is how I fixed my problem and how I make money using the web.

Stop doing what you don't like doing

0. I had to take a buying time out. I fell into the self fulfilling, yet false premise, that if I bought all the tools and the courses I would easily make money.

After thousands of dollars in software and courses and about a 5% devotion rate to all of that stuff I bought, I realized I needed to stop breaking out the credit card. The problem is not the tools or modular courses but with me. I had to start mastering the tools and strategies that I already had. You know, take responsibility. Which leads me to many of the next steps.

1. I stopped building real websites. You know, the kind that need your attention on a regular basis. In fact I hate making these kinds of websites and trying to rank them. Time Killer...

Websites are like house plants to me. I kill em shortly after they sprout because I go on vacation and forget to water them. So I stopped!

2. I stopped doing my own SEO. I own ultimate demon, Market Samurai, scrapebox, the best spinner, traffic Travis and a few others, all sitting on a VIrtual Private Server. WOW!! what a time killer that combination became.. what was I thinking? I stopped doing it!

3. I would spend hours flow charting, mind mapping and outlining in Microsoft word, clever and brilliant marketing strategies that could make me rich, only to ignore them forever the moment I hit save and closed down the software. So I stopped.

I really did take Internet Marketing Short Bus. I have thousands of dollars, thousands of hours and 7 years under my belt. I have screwed up so many strategies, wasted so much money and burned so much time, but I loved every minute of it, which is why I kept on trucken.

All of that screwing up and screwing off has yielded a world of experience. And I'm paid big to consult in the offline world because of my experience.

None of it was for Not!!!

Here is how I overcome a few of my personal problems and transcend to levels or profitability in my Internet Marketing Career and my offline small business marketing strategist career.

Start doing what you like

0. If you're going to spend money, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Don't buy a microniche website modular course if you hate making websites. Don't buy back linking building software if you hate building backlinks. Don't buy the best spinner if you hate spinning articles. Do buy Ultimate Demon if you love staring at a computer screen for long periods of time.

If you're new and you don't know what you like to do, then invest in whatever it is your thinking about buying but make sure it has a money back guarantee, that way you can test it out and make a decision.

1. I like YouTube and video marketing. I find it exponentially easier and quicker than running my own microniche website. If you despise the traditional website methods, then get good at other things.. Think webinars, video marketing, PPC, CPA, driving traffic to a squeeze page using Solo's, creating your own killer products etc...

2. Time=$$ and I find that some of the most brilliant internet entrepreneurs are completely illiterate when it comes to computers. I mean they run their multimillion dollar businesses off their MacBook Airs... That should tell you something. If your computer can't run back link building software and your pissed, then you're thinking like a worker bee an not like an entrepreneur.

I outsource my SEO. Use a virtual assistant, use fiver, hire a proven expert here in this forum..

If you like this kind of work, then more power to you.. keep up the good work, we need more people like you.

3. kill the gadgets and go buy a nice logbook to write in. Carry that book with you everywhere.

Perfect for creating a task list and remembering stuff better. This will keep you from losing files because you cant remember what computer it's on, or you simply forgot that you wrote it.

Best of all, it keeps you focused! Whenever you feel you have lost track of what you're supposed to be doing, or you forget about the end result, you can immediately jump to the page in your logbook you created a month ago and be reminded of what your doing and what the goal is.

It's also a great tool for setting goals and reviewing past performance. This is how I discovered my inability to see a project all the way through, from conception to money in the bank.

I would easily forget the next step in a month long strategy (maybe it was some backlink building or something) or what the point was in what I was doing and around that time, a shiny new piece of miracle software would dangle in front of face and I would jump ship.

I hope these little personal insights help you guys with whatever it is you are doing or the problems you are facing.

My two cents...

Gene

PS written on an iPad.. so if it says microfiche instead of Microniche then you know why...

    Hi Gene,

    Thanks for your incredible insights.

The less time I spend around the latest bells & whistles, the more time I have to let my thoughts flow with ease- producing powerful ideas that help turbocharge my business.

Keeping a notepad at my fingertips allows me to capture ideas or words that I'd like to use later. Taking a step back and viewing the BIG picture helps me stay focused on what's important. Some ideas work and some flop. It's much more stimulating for my mind to take notes, rather than spend 5 hours tinkering with a clunky piece of software.

    Simpler is smarter.

Thank you Gene for this helpful and inspiring post. Your story reminds me of me so much! I do admint to getting distracted on a regular basis. I am also guilty of being a "ship jumper" ......... sometimes I feel like I have been on more ships than Blackbeard the Pirate - but no hauling on nearly as much loot!

I think that it is essential for you to stop doing what you do not like doing. To many of us hate what we are doing and it does not make sense to keep pursuing that. Instead find something that you like doing and make your dreams come true. This will lead you to success.

    Just my 2 cents.

You cant stop doing a thing if you lack resources. Sure wouldn't we all like to stop doing the things we don't like. Ideally i'd like to get up a 12pm whilst "Aint Jemima" have my latte with whip cream ready for me from my starbucks coffee maker. Meanwhile I parade around my home office in my favorite slippers, (and hanes underwear), playing nerf basketball pretending i'm Michael Jordan while listening to pitches from entrepreneurs seeking investment money.
Most days i'd like to play beach volleyball with 5 "Aint Jemima's" whilst I hold an ear peace to listen to pitches and have people call me to give me money to invest in whatever deals I accept.

Thanks for taking the time to write that.

I'm finding that the longest part of my journey to success is all the time and energy it takes to work on myself. I'm always grateful for advice from someone who has gone through similar issues and can provide actionable ideas to help.
