"Think Rich, Grow Rich" - What do you think of it?

I found it to be very heavy going and it took me ages to read it. I'm now going over it again and making my own summary/notes.

Cons
-It was written in the 1930's so all the famous people/examples are over 70 years old which detracts a little for me
-there is constant reference to the infinite cosmos etc etc
-often takes pages to get to the point

Pros
-excellent points such as never giving up, inspiring examples and excellent guidelines
-the idea of a mastermind group is brilliant. There is even a section in this forum for mastermind groups

Summary - well worth reading and the hard work it takes to get to the end

What do other people think of this book?

I kind of skewered this sacred cow in an Amazon review and
most commentors rate it "not helpful" - indication to me that
people read reviews to validate their own opinions of books
    like Think and Grow Rich.

Actually it's pretty good. It's just old and predicated on an
old understanding of neurological function. Hill uses the
word "attract" and a whole industry has sprung up from it.
He just lacked scientific information to explain about how
the brain sorts information - explains it as "attracting" what
we think about, and then we have an issue where people
believe meditation will bring them wealth.

It doesn't work that way and I don't think Hill intended
it to be read that way - but nonetheless this is how it
is interpreted by some people today.

Late in the book when more feeble readers stop paying
attention Hill writes briefly about "accurate thinking" and
in my opinion that section is the most important in the
    whole book.

The principle of autosuggestion is charming and the exercises
are helpful - the ideas are dated and have been improved
upon. Study some NLP stuff and you'll see that there is
a lot more to how we can reprogram ourselves than Hill
    imagined.

On the plus side it IS written with hypnotic flair.

Hill's idolization of industrialists seems out-of-place today.
One of his idols who "thought rich" actually squandered it
on a lavish lifestyle and died a pauper. So history tells
a different story. If one were able to merely think and
grow rich then that individual should have been able to
prevent or correct his course to at least not die in debt.

Charles M. Schwab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hill, like Robert Kiyosaki, made his money telling people
how to get rich. He was in the Guru business, just like
a spiritual guru from India (and many of them who know
how to work it do get rich) who tells people what they
want to hear. I don't have a problem with people in the
guru business - but it is true a fellow will go much further
in it telling people something enjoyable for them.

Hill's book is cool. I like it actually and it does get easier
to read after the first time. It's just been put on a
pedestal and some of it's premises are rooted in the
    past and definitely unscientific.

Loren - that's a great take on Hill's work. I am a fan of this book and many others delving into human psychology, NLP and the law of attraction. I would highly recommend this to anyone, along with another personal favorite - The Master Key System by Charles F Haanel. The language may be dated but the overall principle is they same.... but I do think the outburst of 'The Secret' a few years ago has frustrated alot of people.

I have got - and sell - "The Law of Success" which is Napoleon Hill's complete work over 16 volumes. TAGR is really a summary of it.

That said, almost all books from that era follow each other with the same concepts, broadly surrounding The Law of Attraction. The Secret movie also came from that school of thought.

Although these are good books, and success can be achieved by following them, not one of them actually understands how we really create our experience- or actually simple "experience".

There is no Law of Attraction. LOA is a product of flawed thinking at the time in the absence of further knowledge.

Brilliant book though...I think the best or most useful information that was new to me at the time was the content regarding the transformation of sexual energy into other action. Genius in my opinion..

To Think and Grow Rich is a foundational book in personal development and self help. You really can do well with it. If you come from the belief system that whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it will achieve than you will be far more likely to go out there and give it your all. Its very important to have open beliefs about the possibilities. If you are committed to opening yourself up to anything being posible you are much more likely to find many ways to your destination.

    Greatest book of all time.

What I liked most was the fact that what Napoleon believed would happen in the future actually did. Ie "one day you'll be able to have lunch on one side of the US and then be home for dinner". You need to remember that when this was written thoughts like this were considered ludicrous. Amazing stuff.

    Highly recommended.

Think and Grow Rich is a fantastic book...one that I read at the beginning of every year. I have purchased and given copies to my friends and it has done wonders for them in terms of helping them develop the proper mindset. Wasted talent is so prevalent in our times, because of skepticism and faulty belief patterns (i.e. negative self talk). Reading Think and Grow Rich can help change that!

It changes your entire mindset. Makes you take a different approach to making money. So, many Success "Gurus" have incorporated principles from this book into their teachings that it is impossible to truly identify the depth of impact this book has had in modern day "Success"/"Achevement" Trainings.

I took away several great points. But, I guess the most powerful ones are the power of positive thinking, Making a plan, Taking Action and Going the Extra Mile.

The mastermind goup is awesome but I haven't been able to put one together since I was in high school! That mastermind group was about disruption, patying, and girls!

Now, I'm looking to put one together for Online Marketing. All in all Napolean Hill is absolutely brilliant in bringing these tactics and mentallity to the everyday. The next book you should look into reading is The Magic of Thinking BIG!

The title implies that you must 'think' first before you grow rich. Remember everything we physically see in front of us first was a thought in someone's mind.

To stay rich and grow even richer, you must constant acquire new and better thoughts. In other word's you must continually challenge and grow your mind.

This was my first self-development book and I reference it everyday because there is so much material to cover. If you look at all the successful people today in terms of money, they apply every single one of these principles in their life, either consciously or subconsciously. So this book is very relevant to today's times

I have to give it a big thumbs up, because I wouldn't be where I am today without it. Yes, the information has been surpassed by a newer understanding of the principles of success, but it was the foundation of my own success mindset and I have to give it respect for that.

It's a great book for anyone and everyone to start with as a doorway to the other information and more recent understanding about psychology, NLP, making money etc...

It's kind of hard to grasp without experiencing it in different formats.
You should get audios and read books. You can get Tony Robbins
"Personal Power" tapes for a start (I don't want to say Tony is the
best at NLP but you'll be able to get the tapes secondhand easily
or at your library maybe). I like Christopher Howard's stuff myself -
and if you live in a major city in the USA or AU you can catch his free
      3-day seminars.

NLP is a big subject. I'm not an expert by any means but I've grasped
and experienced the basics. It's a long path to learn it and use it.

I think it's a great book and overall I like Hill's work. I'm a firm believer of the whole you are what you think thing, the problem is (as Loren pointed out earlier) that this leads people to think they can get where they want to through meditation.

I've read too many posts on forums where people are frustrated after trying to think themselves rich for so long and failing. If your thoughts are making you take the right action, then you'll get there.

    That's my 2c

At the time of Hill writing it, there was
      nothing quite like it.

I mean he studied the top 500 successful people
in the world and put what they do in a book.

      Genius.

the book talks about focused action persistence
definiteness of purpose thing we all need to succeed

Think and grow rich is a great title because
even though it disscusses correct thinking
