Write down your goals!!

I was listening to a youtube video and heard the following.

There was a study done in which business school students were asked if they had written down their goals in life by the time they graduated. Only 3% said they had actually written down what they wanted out of life.

Well they followed up on these students later (10 years I think?) and discovered that those 3% were making far more than the rest.

Now obviously there are likely to be other factors than just writing it down. For example, those who wrote it down could have already been more serious about their goals in the first place. Still, it seems to me there is something to this. When we write down our goals and what we want out of life, it makes us more focused on exactly where we are going. And the more focused we are the better chances of succeeding.

I have been doing a ton of journal writing lately and yes I've written down goals - general goals and specific goals. I think it has really helped. It's like I'm placing an order to the universe.

But also, when you force yourself to pick up a pen and write those goals out, it really gets you to be specific and you end up asking questions of yourself that you might not have thought of if you didn't write it down. For example, let's say you want to make a million dollars. Well one question that comes up is how soon? And another question that comes up is, do you really believe it's possible? Another question is, why just one million dollars, why not state that you want two million? What about ten million? And then you ask, do you really believe ten million is possible. These questions can go on and on, but you have to stop somewhere. Well, where do you stop? If you write down ten million dollars in ten years, you might ask yourself if it's too high or too low of a limit.

If you take it seriously enough, what ends up happening is you really get in touch with EXACTLY your belief system and where your limitations really are. Maybe you find out that you actually don't believe in yourself much at all. Or maybe you find out that you really do believe that so much is possible in life. This is the power of writing it down!

Write down what you want, write down what you hope for, what you dream for, what you think is possible. Dare to dream big too, because if you can't even dream big, how will you ever make it a reality?

Writing down your goals is an absolute must to get what you desire. It brings it from the mental/spiritual world into the material world so that it can start taking root and grow.

It also starts to make a road map that you can go back to and make sure you are still on track.

Write down your goals if you are serious. Otherwise your just blowing smoke

This could be the reason why i can't seem to hit or achieve what i really want to achieve, seems like I am more into action and no goal is really achieved. I need to write it down so i could have a direction.

Wow. That is interesting. Though I think when you write something down it makes it "real", where as if you just think about your goals they are more likely to be "fuzzy".

I dont write down my goals, I visualize what i want to happen.
As well, I give thanks to everything I have.
Of course, its important to do this everyday and truly believe and feel your goals have been met.

I am definitely an advocate for writing stuff down, it can help in so many ways.

One thing I have noticed when I write down my goals, ideas, etc is that when I'm sitting there thinking about them and writing them down, then other goals and ideas pop into my head which I can also then write down. Generally I find that sitting and writing puts me into a different frame of mind and helps me to become focused.

Also I think it's important to have a plan of action as to how you will reach your goals, both business and personal. So write your goals down and break each one down into smaller goals that will help you get to the ultimate goal, doing this with each smaller goal until you have a number of small, achievable goals that you can progressively work through in order to reach the next one and so on, until you finally reach your ultimate target.

Definitely good advice. Kind of like people who draw a picture of the house they want to build and stick it on their refrigerator. Or sometimes they put a picture of someone with the kind of body they want and stick it somewhere to remind them of the goal they're working towards.

    Great information!

Write the goal down is only the first step. To keep it real, I would like to add

    - Assign a time frame to the goal. If there is no time assigned to goal, it can be forever, then really there is no deadline and you will never reach the goal.

    - break the goals down according to time period. To earn 10 million dollars in 10 years is a big goal, so there needs to be detailed strategies planned as well. Break the big goal into small pieces can help set milestones.

    - make it measurable. If there is no way to measure the result, you will have no clue how far it's away from your ultimate goal. Very often you will miss your direction.

    - assess the small goals on regular base. How well have you done for a certain time period? Time to adjust your plan, be sure to make the change.

Definitely write down you goals. It makes what ever you want to achieve seem more tangible. For example you can break down you goals into a daily to do list. Now you know if you get these things done you are progressing towards your overall goal.

I've written down goals off and on since my junior year in high school (more than 40 years ago). A lot more 'off' than 'on.' There is no doubt in my mind that I achieve more when I have written goals. Yet, I haven't written out goals in years. It shows.

I have a client who is adamant about written goals and he has achieved success in a tough field far beyond what I think he or most other people would have expected when he started out. As he reached his early goals, he set new goals and continued to reach further.

It's definitely time to get out the pencil and paper and write down some goals.

I'm not sure if just saying "Dream big" is a solution for many people. What if everybody was dreaming big? There would be many people disappointed in the end...

Instead of writing down your dreams, write down what you need to do today, that way you won't waste your time

Yes, for sure writing is important. That's why when you get
married you make you sign that piece of paper. You are
really writing down your goal of a long an happy marriage.

Without those signatures the divorce rate would be higher.

Writing something down gives a physical connection between your idea, goal, dream or whatever it is to your subconscious. And once it hits the subconscious, boy you will start to find all sorts of different ways to make that idea happen. I love brain science but I think my most favourite discovery about the brain is how powerful the subconscious is, in particular at finding answers for you.

Writing your goals down is a powerful way of asking your subconscious to find a way to make your goals happen.

Goals can’t be called “fulfilled goals” if there is no planning. So, you need to plan first then put this phrase in mind, “Goals can’t be called ‘goals’ if you don’t set a deadline.”

That's true. Ideally, check your goals each day to keep them fixed in your mind. Write down what you're going to work on that day to get you closer to achieving your goals.

It's important to get clear on what you want and hold it in your mind. Otherwise it's a case of out of site, out of mind. And you end up going with the flow of the world around you without any sense of control or direction.

Being clear also helps to figure out whether you have succeeded or failed. A possible reason why some people don't get clear about what they want is because we are afraid of feeling bad if we fail. Have to learn to be ok with failure. It's gonna happen from time to time.

Just me thinking out loud here, maybe someone can provide addition insight. But, what is the real value of providing a completion date to a goal. I understand the value of a start date. Here's the issue that I have.

If something is really important to you then you will give whatever effort you have to give in order to complete it. By giving it an end date, does that mean you will be able to create more energy in order to get it into your life within that time frame. Maybe giving it a time frame causes us to keep it in our mind because there is a sense of urgency. It's like a McDonalds, limited time offer. We are playing marketing tricks on ourselves.

Whenever I see Olympic athletes being interviewed after a race. most of the time they say stuff like, "I was just focused on my own lane." I kind of see this as how a champion sees there life in general. They're not focused on outside influences whether it's other competitors, the clock or the calendar. It all comes from the inside. Do I have more to give myself? Can I push myself a little bit more? As opposed to discovering we have more to give ourselves only after we applied with external pressures.

I've heard of this study before, it's really fascinating. There are successful people who take hold of life and others who just get kicked along. The former create goals and reach them. If you don't have any goals, then you're always going in the wrong direction.
